Title: Which Bookshelf is best for music
Post by: jtahanlangit on Aug 23, 2015 at 10:48 AM
Hi masters, kailangan ko tulong nyo:

1. Anthony Audio Apocalypse
2. Polk Audio rtiA3
3. Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo One
4.Open for other options on sub 20k price range.

I will use it purely on music listening lang, will be driven by Marantz/Pioneer AVR for the meantime habang hunting mode pa ng stereo amp. :)

Thanks in advance mga sir.

You have to tell us your preferences in music and SQ.

in addition to preferences in music and SQ, your choice also depends on the following:
   1. size of the room:
       small room=small bookshelf
       medium room=big bookshelf
and
   2. brand of stereo amplifier to match with bookshelf speakers:
examples are the following: NAD amp-PSB speakers like B6/xb; Rotel amp-B&W 686;Marantz amp-
      Polk RTIa3;Pioneer amp-Wharfedale Denton;tube amp for A-audio Apocalypse;etc

Speakers will be setup in a small living room. Placement is limited to a maximum of 1' from front wall.

Most of the time listening to Contemporary RnB, Pop Rock, and Country music and a bit of power ballad.

I'm using PSB Imagine XB, music setup pa lang 2.0. I'm not sure how it compares to other bookshelf speakers pero for me it sounds good.

Between rtia3 and apocalypse kaya, which one will perform better base on my music preference and powered by marantz

Does anyone here also had a chance to listen these Aegis Neo One of AE?

ibang level na kc ang imagine xb.

psb has the following lineup:
   1. alpha series-entry level
   2. image series-mid level
   3. imagine series-high end
   4. synchrony yata pinakamataas.

so yung imagine xb,nasa 3rd level though yung price almost 18k lang. (c/o Watts Hifi by sir rex)

sir jtahanlangit, considering your preferences in music, i think your setup should be BS+subwoofer to accomodate the lows in your music.

i think apocalypse BS paired with a tube amp is very excellent in classical, soft sweet sounding music but not with your type of music. you can try anthony audio's titus gold BS which is more appropriate. by the way, their shop at MCS makati uses marantz AVR, so marantz and a-audio speakers might be a good combination.

you can also visit Watthifi by sir rex and try NAD amp + PSB speaker B6 or XB setup.

Agree with you master markcrenz, just as you know that there is no edge in the universe but if you were given a chance to explore it you can always tell the people "that is the FARTHEST I've discovered". ;)

Now, refer to my first post which one is BEST?

The best is for the OP to really go out there and test/listen to each speaker to at least get a glimpse of the sound he will be hearing and establish his preference.

At a certain price point, I could say there is no best speaker cause one brand may be good for one and not good for another person. So it is really hard to recommend without the OP hearing it.  And, to top it all, there could be no one that has heard all the speakers in the list.

For me, a speaker first has to be transparent or detailed, in a sense that it is able to output the character of the connected components from source to amplifier.  I think this what makes a speaker good. If you connect a laid back system, what comes out should be laid back.  If you connect an ear piercing system, what comes out should be ear piercing.

For frequency response, it will depend on the design of the speaker.  Don't expect extended bass for most bookshelf speakers.  Also, you need to match the size of the speaker to your room size.  A powerful floorstander will not sound good in a very small room.

My first step in picking a speaker is to look at the maximum budget I can afford.  In the case of a 20k speaker, I would not expect extended bass output but rather concentrate on the mids and highs performance of the speaker.  Bass can later be augmented by a subwoofer or the need for more bass will depend on the type of music that will be frequently played.  Also in this price range, if the speaker has loud bass, in my experience, the mids and highs are compromised.

I guess, the OP should really set aside some time to test the speakers.  He should consider it a journey in finding the speaker that suites his taste.  For imported brands, there are reviews he can check on the web as a starter.  Another would be to listen to PDVD member's set-up and hear how they sound.  From there he can establish his preference.  Also be aware, that your first purchase (even if you found what you like) will never be the last ....... good luck on your hunt and enjoy!

Members posted here suggestions which we actually heard or some owned. I posted my suggestion because for me it's the best for the budget you posted, but then again it's just my opinion and i'll choose it if i'm in your shoes. Others or even you may not like it. I liked it because i heard it a lot of times.

So you write the list and go out there and audition. From there you will hear which is best for you. Good luck sir and happy hunting/listening..

Shops you can audition to name a few..
AVSHOP
Watts Hi Fi
LIS
Listening Room
Architectural Audio
Audio Amplified

Short list mo na lang din yung mga audio stores na gusto mong puntahan. Some stores have less accommodating staff.  ::)

Studio monitor speakers can also be an option. No need for amplifier na kapag active.

Wala pa rin.

Maganda yung post ni JoeyGS, very informative, marami kang mapupulot. Though I have to disagree on the "A powerful floorstander will not sound good in a very small room" statement. I have a pair of 3-way FS with twin 8" woofers and it sounds great in my 120 sqft room. Oh wait this is a BS thread so I'll stop there.

markcrenz also has a point that a floorstander can also sound good in a small room.  And based on my experience, it can be done, but one has to have that small room in good acoustical condition.  And most small rooms needs a lot of treatment in order for the big speaker to sound right.  A friend of mine has a relatively small room and he acquired a highly rated and in the real sense highly regarded/awarded speaker.  Whenever we have our listening sessions, we can't get the speaker to a certain gain level in order to have a flat response.  It's either the bass is all over and becomes boomy or the mids are right in your face.  The dimensionalilty in the presention of the music gets lost or should I say it's just loud and not musical anymore.  My friend had to look for a smaller size speaker that would perform optimally in his room size.

It may not be the best at hindi dahil meron ako, pero sa mga speakers na napakinggan ko, aprub sa akin ang B&W DM302 (with Dared MP5) esp sa small room - mura pa. Palagay ko mas gaganda pa ang tunog sa mas beefy tube amp.

Yun nga lang bihira mo na makikita sa marketplace.

Btw, hindi trained ang mga tenga ko, ;) .

If you can extend your budget a bit then get the Rega RS1. Ito ang pinakagusto kong budget speaker.

Audition them all then let your own ears decide what works for you the best. Rank them then put the price, then now you can choose the best sounding (using your own ears) that you can afford.

I just love the 302. It can punch out a performance equivalent to one or two tiers above its price point. Its three dimensionality is superb and its not in any way tiring to listen to. The presentation may lack the scale of a full blown orchestra but for a small room it is hard to beat for its price.

The only downside is the lack of bass. Tried powering mine with a variety of amps: 50watts x 2 SS integrated amp, a 400w x 2 SS power amp and a 15watt tube amp. The best result was the tube amp augmented by a powered sub that can go toe to toe with the speed of the 302.
