Title: Rules in buying pre-owned Speakers
Post by: MrDeckard on Oct 20, 2015 at 09:32 AM
Ive been scouting for a nice pair of bookshelf speakers for strictly audio listening.

I came across a preowned speaker that really got me excited. The only thing stopping me from proceeding with this set is that its preowned.

Dont know that much anout equipment. What are the things yo consider when buying preowned stuff?

for me lang, the first to do is to examine the drivers.  ofcourse, with the consent of the owner, I push the drivers using my hand and hear if me sayad.  I usually do this on old school items.  After that, try to play it at various levels.  usually, I start at normal listening levels that go to "0" then hear the speakers kung merong tunog.  finally, at loud levels then amoy amoy sa speaker.  hehehe!

Seriously, pinakamaganda if kilala mo pagkukunan mo.  being a pdvd member is a plus for me.

Pushing the drivers ? What should I look for? Firmness or sagginess?

The speaker has a wire coil that is surrounded by a metal that is energized by the magnet. The coil should not touch the metal part, so if you feel something that is rubbing something inside  when you pushed the speaker cone. Look elsewhere.

Check the dust cap, check if it has been replaced. You would need an image of the original dust cap from the manufacturers website. A replaced dust cap means it has been repaired.

Play loud levels of bass,  turn down the treble, if you know what good bass sounds like, you would know if there is a problem.

if you have a friend who is into audio, does not matter if car audio or home audio, bring him along. He would know what to listen for...

if your hopeless :) and do not have friends who are into audio, you can seek out "Friends" in this forum. if your auditioning speakers,  post a new thread , with speaker brand and model to be auditioned, location and time and ask  someone to tag along and help check the speakers.

I would gladly help if say the location is very close, I know other members would do the same.. I hope ;) offer to buy lunch/pay for gas etc..it helps

1. age of the unit.....look at the web for more info on the speaker, such as cost when new...
2. is the dust cap on both the wooofer or tweeter still intact?
3. is the woofer sourround still intact and is that still compliant?
4. walang sayad ang voice coil pag nilaro,
you have to be carefull here so as not to inflict damage...
5. if these are okey, then it is a go...listen to it on your amp, does it mate well with your amp?

only you can decide how it sounds, trust your ears only....;)
if the owner can let you bring it home so you can listen to it in
your own listening room, then that would be dandy....

If me mono setting and balance setting yung amps, dapat same ang sound ng left and right speaker pagpihit between channel coz pag iba frequency ng kabilang tweeter or midrange or woofer Baka ne na-rewind (ex. Ang rewinded na woofer kukulangin or iba ang tunog sa kabilang channel, except kung parehong na-rewind but abnormal naman bass nun). :)

I Love PDVD because most members allow for Home Audition.
