The S905 chip is fairly recent. It is the same chip that minix neo u1 uses. Basically 4k 30fps or 60fps, h265 video playback is possible.

Check how well the manufacturer supports this product before buying. S905 based Androlid boxes are starting to come out. The designs are fairly similar. How good they perform depends on how good the manufacturer will support the product re firmware upgrades.

Thanks uvax. I got attracted to the Mxq price which is way lower than the HiMedia and Minix. I don't know if the PQ and AQ is equal to, better, or inferior to the other 2 products in "real life" situations. I just got into this 4k thing and I'm still learning the ropes, especially with interconnecting the TV and NMT to the internet.

Edit: Reading up further, the difference between Himedia H8 and Mxq Pro 4K is that the Mxq only has 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM compared to Himedia's 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM. Both claim to have quadcore android 5.1 installed. Price in olx of the Mxq is P3,000 while the Himedia is 7,990.

Thanks DPT. Kaya ba nito ang 2 to 3TB na hard drive?

S905 boards have a reference design that amlogic is recommending.

The part where individual  manufacturer of boxes tweak or cut corners is another topic on its own.

Software is also another issue.

Hit or miss unless you try  or someone tried and make it work.

Nice to see an mxq thread. a friend recently got this from lazada:

http://www.lazada.com.ph/mxq-pro-tv-box-s905-quad-core-wifi-hdmi-20-media-player-eu-plug-6031638.html

it sells for P2,089, but got it forabout P1.8K after using a voucher.

My friend testifies to it being a very good player. after getting it, it updated four times with various FW upgrades up to the most recent. he plays android games on his TV using this

I also orderd one for x265 playability

Branding is quickplay, as it has the built-in wifi, and bluetooth features

You may want to sideload libreelec if your purpose is for video playing only.

Also. Performance is snappy with kodi if you connect a hard drive 2tb and below. Connected a 4tb and things became sluggish.

Am using this...

I just re-flashed it to Dec 2016 firmware you can find sa chinagadgetsreviews.com. Small improvements in the UI but still not possible for Kodi 16.1 to detect AV Receivers with TrueHD/DTS-HD.

hi, sir.  pa-OT please.. can you kindly ask your friend which gamepad is he using when playing Android games with this NMT?  appreciate it a lot if he provides the brand/model and connectivity i.e. thru USB dongle or thru bluetooth.

TIA!

Just an update with this box. After hours of research, flashing and tweaking I've gotten a stable Kodi install.

Kodi Jarvis 16.1 w/ DTS-HD & TrueHD working by using Libreelec firmware for Amlogic S905.

Do not install Kodi 17 on the MXQ because the Android firmware is non-compliant for HD Audio support.

How's the wifi connectivity of the MXQ?  Stable ba?  I got a Beelink GT1 kasi, which seems to only work well with a wired connection.  Planning to get MXQ for a second unit.
Title: Re: Mxq 4k internet/android tv box and media player
Post by: scifi-fan on Jan 14, 2017 at 05:49 PM
Initially I've had a lot of wifi issues with it.

However I realized that my own home network was also old (last wifi router I had was bought in 2010). It was when I made the decision to buy a newer wifi router that now I can stream reliably using wifi with my cellphones, tablets, laptops and other devices in the house.

The good news is that you don't have to spend a lot. Bumili ako ng trendnet na bago sa office warehouse and I am amazed how good it was considering it did not even cost more than 2500.

On hindsight, after reading the comments above from those who have tired the MXQ, I should have gotten this instead of the Kata Box.

This MXQ brand is also heavily counterfeited sa China so even though it says MXQ on the case, the manufacturers are different as well as the firmware. I still can't recommend this unless you're a techie na marunong ma-kilatis what to look for.

- Do NOT get the ones that have Rockchip processors. AmLogic S905 dapat.
- Do NOT get the ones that still have Kit-Kat. Bare minimum should be Android 5

I was lucky I was sold the AmLogic version pero grabe dami ng research na dinaanan ko, flashing, re-flashing before I found the right features I needed to work in my setup.

Thanks for the advice sir. I'm not a techie so I can't do the flashing/reflashing. Maybe I'll just get another Minix U1, or an Nvidia if it is affordable.

True... spending a little more will get you better support/firmware. That's why I also got a Wetek HUB. Out of the box, tumatakbo lahat ng files and HD Audio works.

I just got this as my second box.  I have used this out of the box (save for a few skin customizations), and compared to my other box (with 2gb RAM), it is a bit sluggish, but it works fine.  Even wifi connectivity is good.  As a second box, I am happy with the performance, so far.

@paolorenzo,

I still own this box.

It's a bit old na hence the price sa lazada. Also be aware there is no update expected on this box so up to Android 5.1 lang. Also like all Chinese TV boxes, Netflix will be limited to 480p.

Thanks @scifi-fan.  What I'm eyeing is the S905X variant, and Marshmallow OS is available.  I believe S905X is catered for Marshmallow, while S905 is optimized for Lollipop only.

For my needs, I will likely use it in Libreelec 80% of the time.  Sana Android is stable enough for the 20% of the time I'll need it (e.g. NBA League Pass).
Title: Re: Mxq 4k internet/android tv box and media player
Post by: scifi-fan on Apr 21, 2017 at 12:14 PM
S905X does not mean anything unless the manufacturer pays for the license for Dolby & DTS so be wary.

I will update my freaktab readings to see if the box has Marshmallow available because last time I checked wala for mine. There are different revisions of this board so if you want Marshmallow, insist on P212 version of the board.

As for Libreelec, yes very stable siya. For the league pass, you might just want to cast it from a phone to the TV since alam ko mga adik sa NBA wants to watch anytime anywhere he he he.

DId they intentionally not mention the android OS?

Kodi is now being developed with a specific android version in mind.   Just to be safe you need to get the latest android version for all the kodi features and addons to work reliably.

Get at least android 6 or 7.

I Bought sa lazada "mxq pro" ver 6.0 and amalogic s905. 1gb ram amd 8gb drive. Fully aware there will be no after sales or any product support. Will depend on chinafadgets blog for any worthwhile firmware updates. Removed all preloaded apps. Only have simple tv launcher, kodi 17.1 and firefox. It runs all these apps well.
Remote is so laggy but my use is 90% online content viewing.
Im ok with my purchase. But if the globe mi box came earlier i would get that instead

Naka load na LibreELEC 17.1, via toothpick method. Ayaw mag work nung reboot to recovery, to upgrade to newer Marshmallow. Di lumalabas yung Android.

With LibreELEC, ayaw na gumana yung remote. Bukas na lang uli. Mukhang matinding tweaking kailangan dito.

kelangan mo kunin yung remote.conf sa mxq box in system/etc/remote.conf
then copy it sa /storage/.config folder vis ssh.
or kung naka SMB share yung LibreELEC just go to its shared network drive copy it under \\LIBREELEC\Configfiles then restart.  :D

I've spent the long weekend tweaking this MXQ box.  Medyo turnoff kung stock, pero major tweaks I made are:

Ang hirap yata mag IPTV with this box.

While it may sound bad, the tweaks really make the MXQ a very solid media player.  I can now play HEVC H.265!  Moreso when I think of the P1,556 pricetag I paid.  I'm quite happy with the Android based OS already, so looks like I don't need to do the LibreELEC boot from SD anymore.

I've spent the long weekend tweaking this MXQ box.  Medyo turnoff kung stock, pero major tweaks I made are:
  • Fixed remote issue with LibreELEC (thanks @shoestrings)
  • Change stock launcher to Ugoos TV Launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.ugooslauncher&hl=en)
  • Updated stock KDPlayer to Kodi v17.0
  • Uninstalled unused apps
  • Installed SuperSU (already rooted out of the box)
  • Installed TWRP for S905x (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_SwI7hjk79tdUlsUTdIZWRGVVU), using Rashr (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=en)
  • [optional, not yet done] Install Xposed Framework (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_SwI7hjk79tN2ItV3MzRkJBcUE/view?usp=sharing) and Xposed application (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_SwI7hjk79tR0NYWXlJZjNORjQ).

Ang hirap yata mag IPTV with this box.
  • I  need to spend $12/month for ExpressVPN, to make Netflix US work (bought $30 gift card already).  Tapos yung PQ and SQ were terrible.  Looks like masasayang ang $42 ko for nothing.
  • I can't find PlutoTV add on for Kodi anymore.  Direct install of PlutoTV app has bad lagging.
  • NBA League Pass direct play is ok, but doing it via phone and Chromecast still yields a much better PQ.

Yup, you will be disappointed with netflix streaming because hanggang 480p lang max niya when using the standard app.
For viewing geo-locked services I suggest getting Getflix smartdns/vpn they offered a lifetime plan for $39 few months back. :)
It works for me most of the time for netflix. there are times down siya.. What I like about it is that it works flawlessly with pluto tv to unlock all the channels..  try mo 14day trial nila.

Hanap ka baka meron android TV OS port for your MXQ.. I'm currenty using a Wetek Hub AndroidTV OS port for my KataBox 2 and it works flawlessly with leanback apps like pluto tv, slingtv and live channel apps.

Got this MX Pro. I am using a wireless keyboard with trackpad in kodi. The keyboard doesn't work with the main android screen.  Still need to use the sluggish remote. A lot of the add ons in kodi don't work. Ok with exodus, primewire and SALTS. But also some TV episodes have "no streams available". Movies are ok.

My rpi works faster in kodi compared to this. Good thing lang is that this one has most add ons pre installed. In the RPI I need to install them one by one.

Get the second one. It's the newer amlogic s905x, and comes with Marshmallow. The other one is only KitKat. Mas mura pa yung bago.

Both only have 1gb/8gb.

An S905 box will come with Android 5 while a S905x "should" come with Marshmallow 6.0. The only exception I know is Wetek which has ported Marshmallow to it's S905 Wetek Hub.

Also a "X" model will usually have HDR capability on the settings of the firmware.

It looks like AACS 2.0 have been cracked, if indeed true then we should see Bluray 4K true rips soon.

Not really.. most of the add-ons are pretty small txt files that just tells Kodi where to go to access the service provided. It will take hundreds of add-ons before you even reach 1GB of space used in the storage of your box.

This is intriguing. Same S905 version with Lollipop, but with 2gb/16gb configuration. Will the extra rom boost performance?

Na experience ko yung setup reset sa MXQ when I switch OS between stock and LibreELEC. When I boot LibreELEC via SD, then boot back into MXQ OS, nawawala yung screen resizing ko.  I need to resize it again.  Pero when I stopped using LibreELEC via SD, all my settings are retained ok.  Never had any issues with clock nor LAN connectivity with my MXQ.

Ibalik mo na nga yan, at baka lemon unit.  Take a video of the problems as proof. You need to explain the defects pa.

I would experiment muna by doing a factory reset. Then if that does not work I would try the box in a different LAN/WIFI environment (like sa bahay ng relatives or office) just to isolate if the problem is the box or the LAN/WIFI environment sa bahay.

i personally use the tx3 pro, also from lazada. i didn't encounter any major issues connecting via wifi and lan on stock firmware. most of my files are shared via nfs/samba. for kodi, I uninstalled the stock and used the latest krypton, for jarvis build I used ftmc. only addons I use is exodus and youtube.

since im only interested in using kodi, i've installed Librelec on my tx3 pro over the android fw. it's been rock solid for 1080p files.

mi box have wifi ac support, so if your router supports wifi ac then it should be faster than 100M ethernet. if mainly for streaming over internet, wireless is fine. do you intend to stream movies from your lan via nas?

Hi. I cannot log in to my Netflix account after signing out. I’ve read some reviews and tutorials on uninstalling and installing new Netflix app (from netflix website own 200217-release.apk) but it seems it is stuck to 75%.

Pasensiya na nga sir, first time ko kalikutin tong mxq. Patilong naman po. Thanks.

I dont’t really know what fixed it. I did random restart, installed back the original(old) Netflix app, unistall it, tried downloading again the new apk file from Netflix website, after it got stucked again somewhere around 68-75%, delete again and redo the whole thing. After many tries, finally I was able to install and sign in. :)

Sir paolorenzo, confirmed po ba that the mxq4k uses an optical out instead of a digital coaxial one? I watched this video (link below) kasi and it seems to indicate na digital coaxial ang output( upon visual inspection of the video) unless specifically stated otherwise.

This player passes through DD and DTS audio to my receiver without a problem. Recently, may sakit na sya, it reboots on its own. Im not sure if it is temperature related problem but it looks random, Which gives me choices to replace it with the higher version the 4G ram android boxes. They are faster but having problem with the passing through of DD and DTs audio in movies to my receiver. As ive read in some forums, Hit and miss talaga mga generic na 9.0 android boxes now.

Actually never yata ako naka experience ng random reboots.  Lag ang issue ko and better naman performance after ma flash.  Not as fast as yung Mi Box ko but par for the course for its 1gb RAM, I guess.
