Title: 4k quality on a 1080p tv?
Post by: xb24 on Jun 30, 2016 at 05:59 PM
I have a nvidia shield tv which is capable of playing 4k videos. I don't have a 4k tv yet but I was curious if I would be able play 4k on my 1080p tv. So I downloaded a Elysium 4k sample from here http://4ksamples.com/elysium-2013-2160p-1-minute-sample-footage/ (http://4ksamples.com/elysium-2013-2160p-1-minute-sample-footage/) I was able to play the video just fine but i just want to ask, what am I seeing on my 1080p tv? A "slightly improved 1080p" or basically the same as a 1080p untouched/remux ? Thanks

You are watching a sample of the best 1080p can get.  But still Full HD resolution.

Which is pretty good enough for most people viewing from a distance.

Your player may have "downscaled" to 1080p.

So no slight improvement can be seen? No difference at all?

No difference to a Full 1080P video.

Sir try playing 1080p na lang and see if there's a difference. Test it from 3 different viewing distances.

Looking at the bitrate of that 4K file, that may not be true in this case (especially if he is just comparing against BDs). 58 Mbps HEVC video can carry a lot of useful information. The Bluray spec allows for a maximum of 40 Mbps AVC. Most Blurays carry a bitrate about half that due to large audio streams (HD Audio and/or multiple languages).

I forgot to mention "may" but as i mentioned, compressed 4k vs untouched 1080p

Or safe to say super compressed 4k.

Since 4k has no proper source, i assume that some 4k is encoded at lower bitrate like in netflix at 12 mbps or even lower to reduce bandwidth on streaming. Baka may mas mababa pa sa mga downloaded.

That's why remastered in 4k bluray (1080p native) looks good in 4k tv
Because it is encoded at maximum bitrate AVC can carry
