Confirmed to air on Starz:

Set in the same world as the John Wick films, The Continental will tell the story of the Continental hotel, a place where the world’s deadliest assassins go to lay low when they aren’t out and about killing people.

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht further stated that "The Continental promises to include the thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets that fans have come to expect in the John Wick movie franchise as well as introducing some new, darkly compelling characters who inhabit this underground world."

Casting has not been announced, but Keanu Reeves will serve as co-executive producer along with Basil Iwanyk and Chad Stahelski, who directed all three John Wick films, while Chris Collins (The Man in the High Castle, The Wire) will serve as showrunner and writer.

Starz’s ‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘The Continental’ Will Be Set ‘Way Earlier’ Than Keanu Reeves Movies

“The Continental,” the upcoming TV spinoff of Lionsgate’s “John Wick” franchise, will not be affected by the decision to greenlight a fourth film in the Keanu Reeves-led franchise.

“‘The Continental’ will be way earlier in the history of the series,” Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch said during his executive session Friday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It will be a fresh look at The Continental as the hotel and how that came into the being of John Wick. It’s way back in terms of the timing.”

Starz announced it was developing a TV series focused on the hotel that serves as a safehouse for assassins in development more than a year ago. Hirsch said added that with “John Wick: Chapter 4” slated for a 2021 release, “The Continental” is most likely not going to debut on TV until after that hits theaters.

The Continental Series: Chad Stahelski Offers New Details on John Wick Spinoff

Nearly over a year since we’ve last heard an update on Starz and Lionsgate’s upcoming John Wick spinoff series The Continental, and now executive producer Chad Stahelski has finally shared an update on the highly-anticipated project while also teasing their interesting take on the John Wick world. Speaking with Fandom, Stahelski has revealed that The Continental will definitely be told from a very different character perspective in order for fans to get a grasp on how big the hitman world is.

“The angle they’re working on The Continental TV show right now is a different perspective on the whole world, it’s coming at it from different characters’ points of view and what the breadth of the world is,” Stahelski said. “Whereas in John Wick I’m following a time period that’s almost just a week in the life of one man, [for] who everything spirals out of control, which our John Wick story. The angle that the other producers and writers on the TV show are coming from is a very different timeline structure and a very different perspective of character. About how deep the world goes, and not just assassins but everything that’s included. And a lot of the origin stories are some of the characters you see in Wick. So It’s got some very interesting things, it’s a very interesting take on the Wick world, which I think it pretty cool. But it won’t be from the John Wick perspective. Not that John Wick won’t be involved with it, it’s just not from his perspective.”

Acclaimed writer/producer Chris Collins (Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, and The Man in the High Castle) will write the series and serve as showrunner. The show will be executive produced by a world-class creative team led by Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk (the John Wick film franchise, The Town, Sicario), Chad Stahelski (John Wick co-director and John Wick: Chapter 2 director), John Wick franchise screenwriter Derek Kolstad, along with Collins, David Leitch (John Wick co-director, Deadpool 2) and Keanu Reeves. Stahelski will direct the premiere episode.

Collins expands the universe in the series by focusing on the Continental Hotel and those who find refuge under its roof. Set in a hyper-real version of Los Angeles, the series maintains the urgency of the action along with the dry humor from the John Wick movies.

‘John Wick’ TV Series Details Emerge: ‘The Continental’ Will Be a Gritty Prequel About Young Winston

As fourth and fifth film installments in the beloved action franchise “John Wick” head our way, details are finally starting to emerge about the prequel spinoff series first announced back in 2017. Known as “The Continental,” the show will be a prequel series likely centered on a young Winston, the character played by Ian McShane in the movies. Lionsgate TV boss Kevin Beggs recently spoke with Deadline about plans for the series, and what it might look like even without Keanu Reeves in a starring role. Starz is currently set to host the show.

Beggs said the spinoff series could provide an “interesting backdrop to explore the origins of The Continental, which is famously within the movie franchise the assassin’s hotel in which you cannot kill anyone on the hotel grounds, but of course if you step one foot off you’re fair game, and that’s employed to great effect in many of the plots in the movies. Running all of that is Winston, who is played by Ian McShane [in the movies].”

McShane has confirmed he won’t be starring in the series, but could provide voiceover.

“What we’re exploring in ‘The Continental’ is the young Winston and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel, which we have met for the first time in the movie franchise 40 years later,” Beggs said. “That’s the arena. I won’t give away more than that, but Starz really leaned into this take also, and they have been great collaborators. And how we’ve approached this first season is as three essentially 90-minute events which you could construe as a limited series or a limited event series.”

Beggs said that “Keanu is likely executive-producing. Because we’re way back in time, way back pre-John Wick and even pre-young John Wick, that character is not finding his way into the universe.”

‘John Wick’ Prequel Event Series ‘The Continental’ Lands Albert Hughes as Lead Director

Director Albert Hughes has checked into The Continental.

The filmmaker, who with his brother co-directed movies such as Menace II Society and The Book of Eli, has signed on to direct two episodes of Lionsgate and Starz’s three-installment event series based on the hit John Wick action movies that star Keanu Reeves.

Continental, which is set in the unique hotel for assassins in the Wick movies, was initially envisioned as spinoff series but was redeveloped as a three-night event series with movie length and movie budgets. The installments are to run about 90 minutes in length and, according to sources, have budgets upwards of $20 million.

Hughes will direct the first and third episode while executive producing all three. A director for episode two has not yet been chosen.

A prequel spinoff, Continental is set 40 years before the events of the Wick series and focuses on a young man named Winston. He will one day grow up to be the character played by Ian McShane in the Wick movies but in the prequel’s story is a young man starting as a hitman hotelier who, along with others, create a haven for unsavory types, all set against a backdrop of 1970s New York.

Mel Gibson First Star Set For ‘John Wick’ Origin Series ‘The Continental’ For Starz & Lionsgate Television

Mel Gibson has been set to star in The Continental, the prequel to the Keanu Reeves film series John Wick. The Continental will be presented as a three-night special-event TV series, produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television.

The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals. No word yet on who’ll play Winston Scott (the hotel owner is played in the films by Ian McShane). Gibson will play a character named Cormac.

Finished the series last night. Some of the parts from the first two episodes were a bit underwhelming and the pacing was not as kinetic and thrilling as the John Wick movies, but the final episode was satisfying and made up for it. Have to chime in that aside from the action highlights, the series' soundtrack was well chosen and used to good effect.

Is it worth watching without John Wick?

You can understand it even without watching the John Wick movies as this series is a sort of prequel and the story stands alone, but of course it would be better appreciated if you have seen the movies and can connect the dots with the characters.
