I'm a movie guy, bihira ako makinig sa music. I have Triton 7's for my mains, connected to an external amp.
a.> If I'm using a subwoofer, is there an advantage (for movies) going low on crossover, 40hz, 60hz?
b.> Or is it better to leave them at 80hz?
I tried going 40 and 60hz, seemed like the result was less.
If it's best to just leave them at 80hz, am I not utilizing the capabilities of my towers?
Is it still worth upgrading beyond the 7's or is it better to downgrade to bookshelves?
Looking forward to your inputs. Thanks guys.
-
Triton 7 are very capable FS for movies. Setting the speaker xover up to 60hz is doable given your power amp.
For sub xover, yeah. Setting it below 80hz would result in lesser low frequencies for your sub. I enjoy a 120hz sub xover setting for more thump.
Personally I would love to have Triton 7 for all of my speakers crossed at 60hz. I wouldn't mind low frequencies on my speakers.

Sorry, I wasn't clear with my statement. I left my sub at 120hz, and tried my Triton 7's at 40hz, 60hz and 80hz. I think the 80hz sounded the best.
Oh and I'm running my sub at about 4-6db hot, so maybe that was it. Instead of the 7's producing those 60hz, it was the sub.
So if I'm using bookshelves, would I yield the same result?
-
I ran a 2 channel HT system using a bookshelf (80 hz first order filter) and sub (60hz), after moving to a floorstander, 3 ways with 12 inch woofers with no crossover, the results was awesome, never going back to bookshelves. More midbass punch.

Are you still using your sub at 60hz? Why the crossover? I thought it's best to leave subs at 120hz.
So are you running your floorstanders at large setting?
If given a chance, would you purchase an upgraded floorstanders from your current one? Or it's just not worth it anymore? (Movies application only)
Punchier midbass seems to be logical compared to bookshelves. Thanks for your input.

Sub settings are dependent on the ff in my opinion:
lower frequency response of the mains (in this case floor standers)
desired output in low end frequency (hot setting @ 80 to 100hz for example)
Room size (ability in pressurizing the room)
Come to think of it there is no best or most ideal setting for that matter. For Music what is important is always how the sub integrates to the mains and its speed (if the sub can match up to the mains and not sound like its sluggishly lagging behind lets say on a bass guitar). HT is more tolerant. One can dial up the bass and over exaggerate the low end so that a bomb blast will sound like...a bomb going off. If you ask 10 users in PDVD what their sub/mains settings are for their Music or HT systems you may get 10 different answers. We are only talking about settings here...placement is a different matter altogether that will affect the settings.
In hindsight you can just set it so that it yields the most desirable output for you after which you can just enjoy music or movies afterwards.

@synchro_01
Copy that. My question now is, would I get a benefit if I upgraded my FS speakers? Because from my testing, setting the crossover of my mains to lower value (40hz, 60hz) doesn't seem to be better than 80hz, I might even say they sounded a bit worse. (Movie application)

I use a 2 channel amp. No crossovers, Sub is set at 60-80hz, I forgot na. Floorstanders are run full range. My floorstanders are 3 ways with 12 inch woofers, no plans on going larger.

What is your sub ?
-
@qguy
I have a PC13 ultra for sub, and Triton 7's for L/R. There's a possibility that I'll redo my setup from the ground up, and am just wondering if going bigger would be better, or it would just be a waste of potential, as I am not a music person.
-
Try to demo bigger fronts with larger woofers, something with two 8 inch woofer or bigger :)
-
Also, what is the issue with your current system that makes you want to upgrade? What specific sound aspect do you want to improve?

I'm actually happy with my current setup. But, there might be a reset button in the future, and I may need to redo my HT. So if I can improve (or save) on something, I will bite.

I know demoing is key, I was dead set on buying B&W series, but after an A/B demo, I ended up with the Tritons (which was cheaper). I just want to know if going the bookshelf route would yield the same result for movies, or going bigger is better, or there's just a line I need not cross.
As of now, I'm gathering as much knowledge as I can, so when the time comes, I'll know what to look for.
-
There is no replacement for displacement :) Bigger Woofers Rule, specially in HT
-
bigger is better for me also if space permits
-
Sir off you might want to try my system. I'm running my 5 speakers with a 10" woofer. The 2 surround back on 8". All DIY including sub. You can try it with sub on and sub off.
For me, cutting the speakers at lower frequencies also helps in the panning of mid-low frequencies. May mga 60-80hz frequencies din akong nadidinid sa surrounds so it makes it sound more realistic like gunshots, canons, helicopter blades.

I might take you up on your offer. I haven't heard a DIY setup before, and am now curious. As I am contemplating on doing a behind the screen speakers setup. Did you make your speakers yourself?

I'd have 6m x 5.5m to work with. I've read somewhere that bigger is indeed better, but for movie applications and with sub, it's not by much, if at all. Last time I auditioned speakers at a shop was without a sub. I was trying to A/B two brands. Maybe next time I'll try the same brand with big vs bigger w/ sub.

This is just my experience. I previously owned branded speakers, now I’m into DIY like sir Nelson with 12 inch LCRs and 10 inch surrounds.

How much power do you feed those speakers? Do you still use subs?

Sure John. You still have my number?
I hired a carpenter to make the enclosure design by master Stagea.

Good question because different speakers, DIY or branded requie different power. I'm using an Elite receiver to power my speakers.
-

I use full range drivers with high efficiency, 97-99db, so no need for too much power. I still need a sub for this, planning for more subs in the future.

Pics please :)
What drivers are you using ?

10" JBL 3way coax for center and surrounds, A-audio 10" full range for LR, 8" JBL coax for surround back. It's "hidden", not exposed.

How does the 10 inch full range driver cope with High frequency information ? I have the 8 inch version and find it a bit lacking in HF detail.
Where did you get JBL 10 inch coax drivers ?

It couldn't when compared side by side but descent enough for HT.

I bought it 2009 pa from different car audio dealers. Paubos na kasi.

ahh ok, I think I'm using the same pair as well. Tweaked it a bit to strengthen the highs.

What kind of tweaks did you apply ?

I added a phase plug and made the whizzer cone stiff by painting it with polyurethane paint 🙄 posted that tweak a few years ago back in WS ☺

I just checked the AN site
The Audio Nirvana 'Super 12 FERRITE' ($348/pr) has a test bench frequency response from 36 hz to almost 20,000 hz
How is this possible ?
sir qguy try mo yung audio nirvana maganda hf nya

anong audio nirvana meron ka sir? classic, horn(classic+) or super? Mine is classic, hf is really high, for low notes need to get bigger enclosures(bass reflex>horn)

huhuhu....wish I could have the pleasure to listen to the sound quality of the Audio Nirvan Classic 10...frustrating since the speaker cabinets I bought from Anthony Audio was messed up by AP cargo. Planning to buy na lang Klipsch RP-160M or R28F kasi high sensitivity din pero nasasayangan ako sa ANs. :(

May AN drivers na kayo drhiredgun?

Well, hindi pa natin alam ang average response and kung ilang db ang dip niya sa 36hz and 20k hz. We should see the response curve.

Yes, sir. Unfortunately, the cabinets were damaged on transit (by AP Cargo). They partially refunded the shipping cost pero hindi na na-refund ang unit cost (which was 11k...buseeet talaga) at kinuha pa nila yong damaged cabinets.

Based on the graph, this thing goes south starting at 14Khz.
Which is actually not bad for a 12 inch driver, then again, the manufacturer should have stated this implicitly, rather than saying "Almost 20khz", since most of their target market are technically inclined.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but I just wanna hear your expert opinions. Should I go for Klipsch RP-160M or R28F, or continue with the AN project? Plan is to pair this with low-watt tube amp (13 watts ultralinear...8 watts triode....whatever that means :)). Salamat po.

You are asking for 1 driver to reproduce 36Hz and at the same time 20khz depending on the music material. That is a tall order.

Yeah. I have yet to listen to a full range that delivers very good highs. Imagine all those different frequencies vibrating a single driver. However ang very good advantage in single driver is in unison ang character across the frequency range.

Sir Nelson from what I heard in my room, the highs of the AN classic are comparable to the highs of my NHT M6/M5/L5 speakers which possess aluminum tweeters.
