Marvel Studios has announced another series for the budding Disney Plus platform: Hawkeye, coming in the fall 2021.

Jeremy Renner will star in the series, which will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The character will appear alongside Kate Bishop, who in the comics has taken on the mantle of Hawkeye.

Marvel's 'Hawkeye' Series Finds Its Writer With 'Mad Men' Scribe

Hawkeye has found his writing bull's-eye.

The Marvel series, being developed for the upcoming streaming service Disney+, has tapped Jonathan Igla to act as writer and executive producer. Igla cut his teeth, or sharpened his arrowhead, as it were, as a writer and executive story editor on Mad Men, the award-winning drama that helped establish AMC as a go-to place for critically acclaimed TV.

‘Hawkeye’ Disney Plus Series Eyes Hailee Steinfeld for Lead Role

Hailee Steinfeld could soon be part of the Marvel family. Variety has learned exclusively from sources that Steinfeld has been offered a lead role in the upcoming “Hawkeye” series at Disney Plus.

The limited series will see Jeremy Renner reprise the role of the titular bow-wielding hero that he has played through multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently in “Avengers: Edngame.” Should Steinfeld join the series, she would play Kate Bishop. Bishop is a Marvel Comics character who took up the Hawkeye mantle after Clint Barton (Renner). She is also a member of the group known as the Young Avengers. It was reported last week that Jonathan Igla is attached to write and executive produce the series.

‘Hawkeye’ Series at Disney Plus Adds Six to Cast, Including Vera Farmiga and Tony Dalton

The upcoming “Hawkeye” series at Disney Plus has cast a number of key roles, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Along with series leads Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox, and Zahn McClarnon will all appear in the series.

Farmiga is attached to play the Marvel character Eleanor Bishop, the mother of Kate Bishop (Steinfeld).

Fee will play a character named Kazi, most likely short for Kazimierz Kazimierczak, known to Marvel fans as the mercenary villain Clown.

Dalton will play Jack Duquesne, more than likely a take on the Marvel character Jacques Duquesne or Swordsman. An early mentor to Hawkeye, Swordsman has been both a hero and a villain in the Marvel comics.

Pugh will reprise the role of spy and assassin Yelena Belova, the sister of Black Widow.

Newcomer Cox will play Maya Lopez, the true name of the Marvel character Echo, a deaf Native American who is capable of perfectly copying another person’s movements, making her a formidable fighter. The show will mark Cox’s onscreen debut.

McClarnon will play the role of William Lopez, likely a take on Maya’s father Willie “Crazy Horse” Lincoln from the comics.

‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff Series About Echo in Early Development for Disney Plus

The “Hawkeye” series at Disney Plus may already be getting a spinoff.

A show centered on Echo, a deaf Native American character who will be played by Alaqua Cox in the “Hawkeye” series, is in the early stages of development for Disney Plus, Variety has learned exclusively from sources. Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen are attached to write and executive produce the show, with a writers’ room recently being assembled. Marvel Studios will produce.

Reps for Marvel Studios declined to comment. Reps for the Cohens did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Echo, whose real name is Maya Lopez, has the ability to perfectly copy another person’s movements or fighting style, making her a formidable opponent in battle. In the Marvel comics, Echo crosses paths with characters like Daredevil, Moon Knight and the Avengers. She was also the first person to hold the title of Ronin before passing it onto Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, in the comics. At the beginning of  “Avengers: Endgame,” Barton (Jeremy Renner) briefly used the name Ronin and went rogue from the Avengers after losing his family in Thanos’ snap.

Entertaining series so far, great chemistry between Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld. It does have the “Die Hard” holiday action vibe. It’s not drawing as many viewers in the US compared to the Loki series (https://deadline.com/2021/11/hawkeye-viewership-weekend-loki-disney-1234881576/), probably because Hawkeye is not a top tier Marvel character and there’s viewer fatigue - it’s the last of the MCU TV shows released this year.

Wanda was ok, I like it because of the uniqueness of the story set-up. but Loki was really confusing (over sci-fi). The Falcon and the Winter Soldier & now Hawkeye are relatable due to the normal modern day atmosphere.

For me it beats Wandavision as my favorite MCU series.   Love the Christmas theme. Also, I hope there's a Black Widow 2 with Yelena in it. I love her take on the character. Humorous.

Also, Echo's translator gave me some serious Jon Snow vibes hehehe...

My opinion is a bit different to most, unfortunately.

I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't think it was good either.  The script was a bit too juvenile.  The plot itself is basically a buddy cop film where the rich girl with all the resources and white privilege gets to be the hero at the end.

Clint Barton as a complex anti-hero with a dark past was what  I was expecting, instead I got a Men in Black remix. It's a good family action film but I think it fails to live it up to its potential in the Marvel Universe.

If I were to rank the MCU TV shows this year, it would be: WandaVision > Loki > Hawkeye > FTWS. But I thought Hawkeye had the best co-leads. Excellent chemistry.

Regarding that Hawkeye mid-credit scene, I was hoping for something else. :) So count me in as slightly disappointed:

Medyo bitin ang Hawkeye para sa akin especially yung paglabas nung 'Boss' nila. Parang nag-cameo lang. Anyway, here's how I ranked the Marvel series they released this year.

Lucky the Pizza Dog is the name of the Golden Retriever of Kate and Clint.

I dig some more and this actually makes sense since I saw the same Golden Retriever in Guardians of the Galaxy scenes:

Though Lucky is already a significant part of Hawkeye, the dog may have a deeper purpose in the MCU. According to a fan theory (via Reddit), Lucky is secretly Cosmo the Spacedog. Cosmo previously appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, where he was initially part of The Collector's (Benicio Del Toro) collection and played by a dog named Fred. However, Howard the Duck (Seth Green), who was also part of the collection, winds up at the battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame. Therefore, Cosmo could be more than an Easter egg. The dog also could've been part of the battle at the Avengers Compound. And since the plot of Hawkeye involves stolen items from the Avengers Compound getting sold at a black-market auction in New York, it makes sense that Cosmo could've tagged along for a ride from the Avengers' headquarters too. There, he meets Kate Bishop and becomes Lucky.

The theory has enough evidence to work. Cosmo has telepathic powers in Marvel's comics, and the dog seems to have an odd understanding of both Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. Additionally, while the comics show the Tracksuit Mafia originally owned Lucky, the Hawkeye series just has the dog show up out of nowhere to protect the items from the Avengers Compound as a Tracksuit Mafia member tries to steal them. Kate Bishop also wears a shirt acknowledging Laika, a dog the Soviet Union sent into space. In Marvel's comics, Cosmo obtains powers after being sent into space.
