Rosario Dawson to Star in Ava DuVernay's 'DMZ' at HBO Max

Rosario Dawson is headed to HBO Max, signing on to star in a pilot directed by Ava DuVernay.

Dawson (Jane the Virgin, USA's upcoming Briarpatch) will play the lead role in DMZ, based on the comic book of the same title. The potential series is set in a United States torn apart by a second civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone — the DMZ of the title.

DMZ is based on the Vertigo comic by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli. It's set in a near future where the island of Manhattan is a no-man's land separating the two sides in a bitter civil war.

Dawson will play Alma, a fierce medic who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son. As she contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords who now control the lawless island, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone there has lost: hope.

Roberto Patino (Westworld) is adapting the comic and will serve as showrunner on the pilot. DuVernay will direct and executive produce with Patino.

DC Comics ‘DMZ’: Benjamin Bratt Joins HBO Max Pilot From Ava DuVernay

We’ve learned that Benjamin Bratt has scored the series-regular role of Parco Delgado opposite Rosario Dawson in the HBO Max pilot of DC/Vertigo Comic series DMZ from Warner Bros. Television.

DMZ is set in the near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone, destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world.

Bratt will play Parco Delgado, the popular — and deadly — leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the DMZ. He wants to rule the DMZ and will stop at nothing to secure that outcome. Delgado is known as a wildly magnetic, affable and equally influential man.

HBO Max Gives Limited Series Order to Ava DuVernay’s DMZ Adaptation

After wrapping production on the pilot for the potential series adaptation of the Vertigo comic, HBO Max has officially greenlit the Ava DuVernay-produced DMZ for a four-part limited series at the WarnerMedia streaming platform, with production slated to begin on the rest of the series in 2021.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this epic to the screen with my boundary-pushing partners at WBTV and HBO Max, a sublime cast led by Rosario and Benjamin, and my partner and friend, the inimitable and ever-inspiring Ava DuVernay,” Roberto Patino, series showrunner/creator/writer, said in a statement. “DMZ offers up an explosive playground which, more than anything else, exalts the resilience of community and the human spirit. I can’t wait to welcome the die-hard fans of the comic books and new viewers alike to this intoxicating, haunting and inspiring world.”

DMZ takes place in a near-future where an American civil war has left Manhattan a demilitarized zone (hence the title) that is isolated from the rest of the world. The story follows a female medic who is desperately searching for her lost son in the DMZ while contending with gangs, militias, and warlords all the while saving lives along the way.

“DMZ’s’ unflinching story of a country torn apart resonates eerily and profoundly amid our current state of the union,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said in a statement. “With the powerhouse visionary team of Ava and Roberto at the helm, bringing this critically acclaimed DC gem to life promises to entertain and inspire hope.”

The series will star Rosario Dawson (Briarpatch) as Alma, Benjamin Bratt (Doctor Strange) as Parco Delgado and Freddy Miyares (When They See Us) as Skel.

Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy, Fear Street) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with DuVernay having directed the pilot and executive producing via her ARRAY Filmworks banner alongside Patino and Warner Bros. TV.
