House of the Dragon: Game of Thrones Prequel Eyeing 2022 Debut
According to Deadline, HBO president Casey Bloys has confirmed that they’re planning to release their upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon in 2022 which would be three years after the original series had concluded its eight-season run. Bloys has also revealed that casting is still underway which is actually in line with previous reports back in July where the network was reportedly looking for actresses to portray the series’ female lead characters Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series will chronicle the rise and the downfall of the Targaryens, who is the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. It will take place 300 years before the events of the award-winning series adaptation of Game of Thrones which aired its final episode last May 2019.
House of the Dragon is created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony). Miguel Sapochnik has also signed on to direct the pilot and additional episodes of the series. Sapochnik and Condal are also set as co-showrunners of the prequel.
First published in 2018, Fire & Blood was released as a companion to A Song of Ice and Fire. The novel begins its tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon” at HBO has found its first cast member — English actor Paddy Considine.
Variety has learned that Considine has signed on to star in the series in the role of King Viserys I, who chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.
Fans of the lore created by George R.R. Martin will recall that Viserys I ruled over Westeros around 100 years after Aegon’s Conquest. His children, Rhaenyra and Aegon II, would ultimately fight a civil war over his throne that became known as the Dance of Dragons.
“House of the Dragon” is set a few hundred years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones” and tells the story of House Targaryen. It is expected to air sometime in 2022.
HBO has given the show a 10-episode order, with casting having begun over the summer.

“Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” has found more Targaryens.
The HBO series has added three more key players to its cast: Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith.
Cooke, known from Amazon’s “Sound of Metal,” is set to star as Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Hand of the King Otto Hightower who was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his inner circle. Described as “the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms,” Hightower has both “courtly grace and a keen political acumen.”
D’Arcy will star as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born, pure Valyrian-blooded child who is a dragonrider. Some say Rhaenyra was “born with everything… but she was not born a man.”
Smith is set to play Prince Daemon Targaryen, King Viserys’ younger brother and heir to the throne. Described as a “peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…”
Smith, Cooke and D’Arcy will join Paddy Considine, who was previously announced as King Viserys Targaryen.

“House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series currently in the works at HBO, has added Fabien Frankel to its cast.
Frankel will appear as Ser Criston Cole, of Dornish descent, the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. Cole has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural skill with a sword.

The cable network unveiled the news, sharing photos of the cast during a socially distanced table read on Twitter on Monday (April 26).

HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon Wraps Production
Author and executive producer George R.R. Martin confirmed that production on HBO’s forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has finally been completed after ten months of filming throughout Europe.
The prequel is expected to make its debut sometime this year. In addition, Martin continues to express his excitement over the series, teasing that the rough cuts of episodes he had already seen are all “terrific,” in terms of its directing, acting, and writing.
“Exciting news out of London — I am informed that shooting has wrapped for the first season of House of the Dragon. Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them,” Martin said through his personal website. “Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post-production work. But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to Ryan and Miguel and their team, and to our amazing cast.”

I liked this series. It's not as good as Game of Thrones but intriguing enough that I'd love to keep going.

At least with HOTD, we are assured that episodes will be based on Martin’s original story, not on some show-runner’s off the cuff version of the story, which ultimately made GOT’s ending so unpalatable.

After all the violence in the last episode, sex scenes make a come back in episode 4 :)
Given her character, Rhaenyra, is only 16 or 17 on the show, one can overlook that Milly Alcock is already 22 years old and can actually do those types of scenes already. Too bad episode 5 will be her last. With the major time jump in episode 6, she will be replaced by "older Rhaenyra" actress Emma D'Arcy.

He thought he was talking to his daughter, Rhaenyra, to whom he had previously confided about the Valyrian dagger and its ties to the the Song of Ice and Fire (from Aegon the Conqueror's dream) after she was declared his heir.

That would have ended the series right there, so I wasn't expecting that. But since this is GOT after all (and not having read the book), I was half expecting to be shocked and see Rhaenys somehow getting suddenly killed while sitting smugly on top of her dragon during that scene. . Buti na lang di nangyari. :D

Looks like Rhaenys has an agenda of her own. She could've had lit the fire right there and then and further prevented any outbreak of war between team green and team black, but instead she chose not to. Mukhang gusto talaga nya magpatayan both camps para sya makakuha ng crown. Kaya gagatungan nya talaga both sides para mag sabong.

Duon sa mga hindi pa nag start manuod nitong season 1, I strongly suggest hintayin nyo na lang matapos season 2 or even seasons 3 & 4 bago nyo simulan panuorin season 1 para di bitin 😂.

Some new faces are heading to Westeros, as HBO has revealed four cast members joining “House of the Dragon” Season 2. Among the additions are some new power players in the Hightower and Strong houses.
Gayle Rankin will play Alys Rivers, a healer and resident of Harrenhal. In author George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire & Blood,” on which “House of the Dragon is based, Alys is a witch who has mystical visions and becomes a powerful figure within the Targaryen’s Green faction. Rankin has previously appeared in Netflix’s “Glow,” HBO’s “Perry Mason” and “The Greatest Showman.”
Simon Russell Beale will play Ser Simon Strong, the Castellan of Harrenhal and great-uncle to Lord Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham in Season 1. Last year, Beale won a Tony for best actor in a play for “The Lehman Trilogy” and has won two BAFTA Awards and three Olivier Awards.
Freddie Fox will play Ser Gwayne Hightower, the son of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), brother to Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and uncle to her children King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), Queen Helaena (Phia Saban) and Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). Fox has starred in Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” and British series “Year of the Rabbit,” “Cucumber” and “Banana.”
Abubakar Salim will play Alyn of Hull, a sailor in the Velaryon fleet who served in the Stepstones campaign. Previously, Salim appeared in HBO Max’s “Raised by Wolves” and voiced the protagonist Bayek in the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Origins.”
Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” will be eight episodes, down from the 10 episodes in Season 1.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Production Officially Wraps
House of the Dragon Season 2 star Steve Toussaint took to Instagram to confirm that production on HBO’s highly-anticipated next installment to the Game of Thrones spin-off has officially been completed.
During the ongoing Hollywood strikes, House of the Dragon was one of the few shows that were able to continue with its filming since all of its Season 2 scripts had already been written, and most of its cast members were part of the Actors’ Equity. The series is currently eyeing a mid-2024 return.

House of the Dragon’s second season will air next Summer. HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced at a press conference on Thursday, November 2, 2023, that House of the Dragon will return for a second season in the summer of 2024.
