‘The Last of Us’ HBO Series Casts Pedro Pascal as Joel, ‘Game of Thrones’ Breakout Bella Ramsey as Ellie

The upcoming “The Last of Us” series adaptation at HBO has cast Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey in the role of Ellie, Variety has confirmed.

Neil Druckmann, a writer and creative director for “The Last of Us” video game and a co-creator of the series, confirmed the news about Pascal on Twitter.

Pascal has seen great success as the star of Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian.” He also recently appeared alongside Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig as the villainous Maxwell Lord in “Wonder Woman 1984.”

Ramsey is best known for her role as Lyanna Mormont in fellow HBO series “Game of Thrones.” The character Ellie is a 14-year old orphan who has never known anything but a ravaged planet. In the show, she struggles to balance her instinct for anger and defiance with her need for connection and belonging as well as the newfound reality that she may be the key to saving the world.

“The Last of Us” series was first announced as being in development at the premium cabler back in March, with the show landing a formal series order in November. Based on the video game of the same name, the series takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

“Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin is attached to write and executive produce the series along with Druckmann. Kantemir Balagov is set to direct the pilot.

Read this in my phone newsfeed earlier .......... as a huge fan of TLOU, I'm on the fence with their cast choices.

Both were great at their roles in GoT, but TLOU is a different animal.

I can somehow see Bella doing Ellie, though no accents please, Ellie was a smart-arse, foul-mouthed adult trapped in a kids body.

I like Pascal, but in TLOU Joel was about as an all-American dad as it gets.

I just hope they don't f__k this up and make a great one.

HBO’s The Last of Us Hires Directors Jasmila Zbanic & Ali Abbasi

HBO has announced two of the directors that will helm episodes of the upcoming show based on gaming phenomenon The Last of Us. Oscar nominee Jasmila Zbanic and Ali Abbasi will help bring the PlayStation 3 game to the small screen alongside executive producers Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, who are writing the project.

Kantemir Balagov is already set to direct the pilot episode. Both he and recently hired director Ali Abbasi won the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard Award in recent years. Meanwhile, Jasmila Zbanic is nominated for Best International Film at this Sunday’s Academy Awards for her work on Quo Vadis, Aida.

The Last of Us Movie Fell Apart Due to Tacked-on Action Scenes

Famed PlayStation franchise The Last of Us was scheduled to hit the silver screen at one point not long after the first game’s release, but that project evolved into a television adaption for HBO. Original game director Neil Druckmann recently revealed why the team made the change, and it makes sense to anyone familiar with the source material. The studios behind The Last of Us movie wanted big set pieces and action, something that the creators at Naughty Dog felt wasn’t necessary to tell their story.

Originally in the works at Screen Gems and Sony in 2014, production issues were reported on widely in 2016 before the entire The Last of Us movie project fell apart. According to Druckmann on the Script Apart podcast, this was due to unnamed studio executives expecting more bombast from a video game property.

“When I worked on the movie version, a lot of the thinking and notes were like ‘how do we make it bigger? How do we make the set pieces bigger?’” Druckmann explained (transcription by IGN).

Both The Last of Us games have plenty of combat with both infected and other survivors. Still, Druckmann sees the numerous encounters as unnecessary to the story and a compromise for the sake of how games are made. In the TV world, he feels that he can still portray Joel and Ellie’s journey while dialing back on the action so it will be more like an “indie film.”

HBO’s The Last of Us Series Adds Nick Offerman

As production continues on The Last of Us, it looks like HBO hasn’t completely announced its full cast yet as it has been recently revealed that acclaimed actor Nick Offerman has seemingly joined Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the upcoming live-action series.

Speaking with The Guardian, The White Lotus star Murray Bartlett confirmed the Parks and Recreation alum’s involvement by opening up about his experience working on the long-awaited project where he revealed that he has shot a lot of scenes with Offerman, whose role remains under wraps.

“It’s co-created by Craig Mazin, who did Chernobyl,” Bartlett shared. “The scripts he’s written blew my head off. It’s an epic show, but beautifully human and intimate. We filmed it in Calgary. A lot of my scenes are with Nick Offerman. Playing off him was awesome.”

‘Euphoria’s Storm Reid Joins HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Series Adaptation As Riley

Euphoria and A Wrinkle in Time actress Storm Reid will join HBO’s The Last of Us series adaptation, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, Deadline has learned. The series, based on the widely popular 2013 PlayStation game of the same name, hails from Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin and The Last Of Us creator Neil Druckmann.

Based on Naughty Dog’s award-winning video game, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed by a deadly virus. Joel (Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone to the Fireflies, a cure-searching organization. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Reid will guest star as Riley Abel. She is an orphaned girl growing up in post-apocalyptic Boston. In The Last of Us: Left Behind, a DLC to the original video game Riley (originally voiced by Yaani King) accompanies and survives with best friend Ellie before she meets Joel.

‘The Last of Us’ Scores HBO’s Second-Biggest Premiere in More Than a Decade

HBO’s series adaptation of hit PlayStation game “The Last of Us” premiered Sunday, drawing the premium cable channel’s second-biggest debut of the last 13 years, behind only “House of the Dragon.”

Per Nielsen ratings and Warner Bros. Discovery’s own first party data, the first episode of the Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-led drama scored 4.7 million U.S. viewers across both the linear HBO channel and streamer HBO Max.

That figure makes the “The Last of Us” premiere the second-largest opening for an HBO show since “Boardwalk Empire” premiere in 2010, well before HBO Max had launched and even before its predecessor streamers, HBO Go and HBO Now, were widely available to customers.

IMO those who are not familiar with the game, will definitely enjoy the series as it has an extremely great story with a great discussion-inducing ending .......... like a great dramatic mash-up of early Walking Dead and The Road.

As for us gamers who played this back in the PS3 through the PS5, we enjoy seeing how they closely stuck with the visuals of the game, while putting just enough fresh content - the opening 1960's TV show was just brilliant.

This is long overdue - finally, we get a great adaptation of a beloved videogame.

this is my 2nd all time favorite PS exclusive game.. done with this game 3x. i can say 100% na this is the real adaptation.

if you played this game vs the episode 1 grabe, frame to frame, emotions, background musics, casting, acting, the tone of voice habang nag uusap, para kang naglalaro mismo ng game

kaya lalo ko na appreciate ang episode 1. sana ma maintain nila ang takbo ng kwento.

So far, so good.  :)

It's great for both fans of the game and new viewers alike.  I liked Chernobyl very much but I still had my doubts since game adaptations that turn out good are few and far between.  But it does seem like Craig Mazin loved the game very much as many scenes in the series look like they were screencaptured from the game itself.

The PC remake will have a very high set of expectations to meet as it looks like HBO nailed it with the tv adaptation.

As widely expected, ‘The Last of Us’ has officially been renewed for Season 2, HBO announced today. It follows a debut that was watched by 22 million viewers domestically in the US and quickly became a hot topic on social media.

Following the announcement, executive producer and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has also confirmed in a tweet that the second season will follow ‘The Last of Us: Part 2’ game, just as the show's first season is based on the original The Last of Us game (later rebranded as Part 1).

Loved the episode. I've seen criticisms about it being unnecessary but I thought Bill's letter was intended (unintentionally) to inspire Joel to replace Tess with Ellie.

It reminds me of a Walking Dead episode when Morgan learned to value life again which also had an Emmy-contending performance from a guest star. Like that, it also had plenty of detractors.

Ewan ko ba, hindi naman dapat puros 100% consistent sa videogame or may ratratan para masulit yung Dolby Atmos setup, lmao.

I agree. The show's treatment of Bill and Frank is much better than the videogame's.

It also paved the way for Joel to care for Ellie.

The screenwriters delved more into the relationship than even the game itself.

Could it have been cut to a shorter length?  Perhaps, but less people would probably be talking about it.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Pokes Fun at ‘Last Of Us’ With HBO Spoof Drama Based on Nintendo’s Mario

“Saturday Night Live” used Pablo Pascal’s appearance as host to push a few buttons on HBO.

The NBC sketch comedy show featured a pre-taped segment imagining what an HBO drama using the famous Nintendo videogame characters Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach would look like. The answer: Pretty dystopian.

In the vignette, Pascal plays Mario and tells Peach that “Karting out here isn’t a game. If we’re going to make it, we’re going to need all the help we can get.” His backup? Luigi.

The spoof suggested that viewers were likely to see “all your favorite wacky racers reimagined as complex, dramatic HBO characters.” Yoshi and Toad were among the characters making appearances, and both came out as bisexual. Bowser also made an appearance.

Having played the game so many times before - hindi na ako apektado sa big final scene ......... in many ways, swerte ang mga noobs sa TLOU universe.

Though, it's very good that Mazin/Druckmnann keeps some things a bit fresh - so far, it's just the right balance of staying on-par with the game e.g. scenes, dialogue, plot, etc ........ and just putting in some nice changes here and there e.g. Bill and Frank backstory siyempre, Sam being deaf, etc.

I read Druckmann had an "Ellie's mother story" which did not materialize in the game and when he told Mazin about this, the latter said he convinced Druckmann that it has got to be in the HBO series. It will probably shed light on Ellie's immunity.

Although I do feel this last episode was lifted almost scene per scene from the game, the actors still did their part to show more vulnerability for the characters (which wasn't always apparent in the game itself).

Really good chemistry between Pedro and Bella, btw.  You can almost tell they really enjoy working together.

Scene by scene comparison from last week's ep:

https://twitter.com/GameSpot/status/1627494497205514240

Really noticeable is how Henry, in the game, tells Joel "This is your fault," while in the series he asks, "What did I do?"

Another scene that was pitch perfect verbatim is Joel and Ellie's confrontation after she reads the teenager's diary on ep. 6. There was never any way that the power of that exchange would be the same if written or performed differently from the game.

Diversity and inclusion kasi ang flavor of the month sa Hollywood ngayon...

Totoo ito bro. Ako buwiset sa madaming forms (not all though) of "wokeness" across many forms of media, lalo na sa Hollywood.

IMO may exemption of sorts itong The Last Of Us.

2013 pa na release at linaro ng madami (including myself) itong game, concepted much earlier by Druckmann ........ canon itong gay relationships sa game. It's been there since it was concepted and released.

Pero syempre mga gamers lang ang makaka alam nito. Hehe.

Ok lang naman ang diversity/inclusion when it doesn't appear forced (like sa Arrowverse 😅) or probably canon, like in the game. Minsan kaso, it's too obvious kaya nakakainis.
Title: Re: The Last of Us (HBO)
Post by: Disharmony on Mar 08, 2023 at 10:42 PM
The race swaps aren't exactly gimmicky or unusual.

For starters, the brothers aren't "white" here, unlike in the VG. They're Chilean and Mexican, respectively. So may precedent na kaagad, and therefore it's not uncommon that Gabriel Luna is going to have an African-American SO.

That also applies to the fact that Sarah here is mixed (which Thandiwe Newton and by extension Nico Parker) than completely Caucasian.
Title: Re: The Last of Us (HBO)
Post by: Verbl Kint on Mar 09, 2023 at 08:42 AM
^^It's only bothersome to those who've played the game and want the show to be as close as possible to the game.

For the rest of the viewers, the racial diversity isn't a big deal.

The opposite is true for the non-binary relationships / LGBTQ+ parts of the show. Gamers accept it as it is canon but many viewers were probably not ready to see it in a post-apocalytic "zombie" series.

True. TV and videogames are a visual medium. We tend to judge what we see. Yes, Pedro is chilean, but he looks  really similar to Joel. I just never mentioned it, but Im actually not into Bella Ramsey's look as Ellie. Acting? Great!. But it just feels a bit jarring to see her as Ellie. I guess it's really not about the race. Its more about the looks.

Diversity and Inclusion is okay as long is it is integral to the story. With Last of Us, they can easily take out Episode 3 and 7 without missing a beat and these are just filler episodes. Can you imagine that, instead of having episode 7, you have instead the hotel basement scene? That said, I did love episode 3 and I don't think it would make as much impact if it was a heterosexual relationship probably because we've seen this scene a million times.
Title: Re: The Last of Us (HBO)
Post by: newwaveboy on Mar 09, 2023 at 05:47 PM
^ IMO Ep. 3 was integral to the series ......... the Bill's town portion of the game was always Joel's target to obtain transportation to get to Wyoming.

Same here, loved the way that they expanded Bill and Frank's story, turned out to be a highlight of this season.

But I can see the scenario wherein there was no Bill & Frank gay love story - just proceed with the game script which would have made for a tense ending, Ellie first time maneuvering/driving a car, while Joel and Bill jumpstart it as infected attack ......... more than a few had some small complaints about the loss of the comedic encounters between Ellie and Bill.

The game itself was near perfect (some Ellie mechanics to complain about since 2013), but the script/story was flawless.

I only played the game 2021 when I got a PS5 and I didn't like the game at all. I'm sure I'm a minority (played uncharted after and didn't like it as well), but I kept comparing to Days Gone and while the story in Last of Us was so much better, the dated gameplay made me just breeze through to try and finish the game as fast as possible. The HBO series is fantastic though and I'll just wait for season 2/3 instead of playing part 2.

Don't think that's going to happen considering she's turning 20 in a few months, and girls stop growing at around 15.

They're also not recasting her (https://www.insider.com/the-last-of-us-bella-ramsey-creators-recast-season-2-2023-3) despite the time jump. Kaitlyn Dever would make for an "older" Ellie pa naman, and she doesn't look old despite her age.

Yes, I know she's 19 na ....... a bit hard to imagine a TLOU2 terminator Ellie, being this cute and small-ish Bella Ramsey.

Wow, Kaitlyn Dever sure has that older Ellie look ........ I also recall an earlier article, suggesting Emma Watson play the older Ellie.

I won't mind if Mazin/Druckmann takes their sweet time (1-2 years) before unveiling TLOU2 ......... baka ipag growth balls nila si Bella.   ;D

For those wondering, the time jump between The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us Part 2 video games is approximately 5 years. Ellie started her adventure with you when she was 14 and Part 2 has you playing her at 19.

I wouldn't be surprised if season 2 releases by 2025. But HBO must know they have a hot property and should release sooner than later (maybe mid-to-late 2024?). Also, it's looking likely season 2 would either be split into 2 parts, or encompass a season 2 to season 3 story arc because The Last of Us Part 2 is about 3x the size of Part 1 in terms of story.

I'm not worried about Bella Ramsey looking like a child. She can pull off looking older based on some of the other TV show clips people keep posting on Twitter. She looks VERY different.

There's a cameo that many people missed, and rightfully so because she was wearing a mask and you had to spot her name in the end-credits.

One of the nurses (the one on the left of the screen) is played by Laura Bailey who performed a major character in The Last of Us Part 2.

The significance of Bailey's presence in that specific scene is a huge wink to those who've played the game.

The Last of Us Part II Will Be Split Up into Multiple Seasons on HBO

The Last of Us Part II is roughly twice the length as its predecessor, and it appears that will also be the case for the HBO Max adaptation. According to the show’s co-creators, that sequel will span over more than one season.
