I had read the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang. Based on the marketing materials, the series will expand much on the source book. Could be good and interesting.

Making a product for the nearly 2 billion eyeballs ethnic Chinese market from an N. American perspective.
-
^ I don't think this is mainly targeted towards the Mainland Chinese market. The multi-award winning graphic novel deals with themes of racism, Asian stereotyping, identity and self-acceptance told in an interesting 3-part story that eventually ties together in the end.

Naturally it isnt targeted to them only.
But marketers know that certain ethinicties have a limited appeal to other ethinicies.
This is why a predominately black main cast tend not to be produced by Hollywood all that often.
Diba some ABCs were emotional with the movie Crazy Rich Asian because they are now "seen".
More like... ABCs not got jobs!

Am just two episodes in, but i am hooked!
-
Finished Season 1 last night. As I expected, it is only very loosely based on the source comic book, but understandably so since they are aiming for a longer form and more marketable series. The adaptation is not bad in terms of narrative, characters and drama, but some elements such as the make-up prosthetics, special effects, costumes and set design are not top-notch standards, most likely due to budgetary constraints. It's a good series overall and an outstanding step forwards for Asian representation. I do hope it rates well enough for a Season 2.
-
I enjoyed it. Action scenes are good. I noticed that the audio is quite good, thumping bass coming from my subwoofer on some scenes, esp on the last episode.

American Born Chinese’ Canceled After One Season at Disney+
“American Born Chinese” has been canceled after one season at Disney+, Variety has learned.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.
