Almost all dvds have accompanying commentary tracks, but has anyone actually listened to them in their entirety? I guess the only one I've listened to na buo was Jerry Maguire (which doesn't actually count because twas a video commentary.. Listened to substantial parts of Fight Club, Se7en, The Simpsons S2 and S3, hmm.. can't think of any more. But haven't really listened to one for the entire length of the movie. How bout everyone else? :)

I don't listen to dvd commentaries from beginning to end. I just turn on the commentary for specific scenes where I need clarification from the director or the cast especially when the movie has an ambiguous ending/scene. I really hate listening to commentaries where directors kiss the ass of the actor where they constantly praise him/her for doing nothing special. e.g. "I like the way he squints his eyes in this scene. He does it efforlessly." Also I hate commentaries when a director says that this is his favorite scene a hundred times.
I still have yet to finish a full commentary.

They say Ebert's commentary of Citizen Kane is a good one...

Thanks. I'll listen to it when my copy arrives. He also has a good commentary in Casablanca. He really explained why the movie was great.

the video commentary for Goonies was pretty fun... it was just the kids (all grown up) hanging around, pointing out silly details, and one big mystery: "just where did sean astin go?" (astin leaves in the middle of the commentary, probably to finally join the fellowship of the ring...)

Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone and Joel Schumacher flicks have excellent, insightful, enjoyable & witty commentaries that I listened to.
You'll not be bored as these filmmakers dished out the moviemaking & background process on the films that they do.
As they have passion for movies....also for their films.

It depends, if a review of the DVD has said that the commentaries are good or great for that matter, then I'm going to listen to that. Also, if I found a certain scene sort of intriguing, then I'll turn on the commentary immediately. I think I did this sometime with the movie In The Cut: Unrated Director's Cut, that scene of Meg Ryan when she went down to the basement... then natawa ako sa commentary ni Jane Campion regarding that scene... I also like the commentaries that Keira Knightley did with Pirates of the Carribean... IT"S SO BUBBLY!!!

Never did actually finish a whole movie with the commentary on in its entirety. I usually fall asleep! At least I tried.... :P

Apparently most people just switch on the commentary track when there's an interesting scene they'd like expounded, then return to the regular audio when they've satisfied their curiosity. :)

The 3 commentaries in the Contact DVD are all great!! wouldnt mind listening to them again.

The only commentary track I've ever listened to was the one for "Knick Knack" (Pixar short on Disc 2 of Finding Nemo) ;D

The only commentaries I've ever listened to are the ones by John Waters. They're so much fun to listen to. ;)

The commentaries of Matt Groening, et al on the Simpsons and Futurama DVDs are often just as funny as the show itself. In Simpsons S4, the commentaries with Conan O'Brien and Jon Lovitz are particular howlers.
I listen to most of the commentaries of the discs I buy. A good number of them are useful in making me sleep. But nowadays, I usually listen to the commentaries while playing NBA Live. Can't explain why, but the setup works very well with me.

^ yup, the Simpsons commentaries were highly recommended by a n t s, and like gurang says sometimes it's even funnier than the episodes themselves! Sometimes it makes the scenes even funnier when you understand what went on behind it. I think I'll listen to them again one of these days.. ;D

Another commentary worth listening to is that of A Knight's Tale. Brian Helgeland is actually quite articulate and does provide interesting insights. On the other hand, Paul Bettany is quite witty. The two have an authentic rapport that they could probably go on tour in a show. They also drink beer while watching the commentary, and their comments, noticeably Bettany's, become looser as the film plays on.
On drinking and commentaries, there is an extra commentary on the teen comedy Eurotrip, called I think the "party commentary", wherein the director and writers drink shots everytime there would be profanity or sexual references in the film. They all are pretty wasted midway through, and not particularly amusing, just like most very drunk people.

Yes, i actually have listened to quite a few number of commentaries... and got to finish them, without ever flinching.
Donnie Darko... the commentary by the cast. Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osbourne, James Duvall, Beth Grant and Katherine Ross. They laugh all the time. Which i really like, shows that they had a great time doing the film.
Dogfight... commentary by director Nancy Savoca and producer.
Stand By Me... commentary by director Rob Reiner. He leaves large gaps of silence in between scenes. i guess, his feature length commentary wasnt so lengthy afterall.
Others, not that extensive listening.

Whaaaa... they casted 20 dildos before reaching the realistic one for the film release ;D (hearing the commentary)
After hearing the commentary.. I moved on to the scene were Meg Ryan was totally naked and in a sex scene with another guy...
Its interesting to learn that there were only 4-5 people during the sex scene shot...
And how Meg Ryan is at ease and relax to it... hmmmmm ..

Roger Ebert's commentary on Citizen Kane is particularly insightful and fascinating. If you don't get why Citizen Kane is often considered the greatest movie of all time, you'll get it by the time you finish with Ebert's commentary.
On the subject of hilarious commentaries, the commentary in This Is Spinal Tap is freakin' hilarious. It's the actors as their characters commenting on the film as if it was a real documentary.

I have listened to the commentaries of these comedy DVDs (a great feat for someone like me, I might add):
- Some John Waters DVDs I have (Pink Flamngos, Desperate Living, Polyester, Female Trouble)
- All the "Strangers with Candy" boxsets
I can't stand listening to the commentaries for serious films.

bryan singer's commentary on xmen 1.5. i didn't craping understanding what he was trying to say.

The commentary on Criterion Collection's SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is the most serious, insightful I've ever listened to!

I went through all the commentaries, but I especially liked the commentary of the soldiers themselves, which I later compared with those of Mark Bowden (the writer). :D
