When it comes to scary movie, I don't go for those movies that uses too much visual fx, well except maybe for the Nightmare on Elm Street series (I was still during that time so I guess it scares me a lot). My current favorites are still Bruce Willis' The Sixth Sense and Nicole Kidman's The Others.

I think Exorcist still the best.

Depends on what scares you. Sixth sense and The Others is more of "nakakagulat" than scary. Exorcist is scary if you are very religious. Shining, Audition and Blair witch are psychologically scary. The Ring, Ju-on and Dark waters are scary if you are afraid of ghosts.  Mulholland drive and Blue Velvet will not scare you but will mess your head up.  Halloween is the only good slasher film. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is really more of an exercise in cruelty. the Italians like Argento were the masters of gore but who gets scared of blood anymore.

For me, i got creeped out with the phantom boy that showed up in a few seconds in "Three men and a Baby".  O0

Spoorloos. Not exactly a horror flick, it's more a paranoid thriller, but will hit you the moment you turn off your dvd player.

Note: It's entitled The Vanishing in english. Available in criterion collection  ;)

Well, depende. Although, mas may emphasis sa atmosphere rather than logic.  Pero ang iba kasi, parang nightmare fantasy so kebs na sa logic minsan (Suspiria, the Beyond, All the Colors of the Night).  Maganda din ang Japanese Horror tulad ng kina Takashi Miike (Audition, I can't plug this movie more than enough).

Tsaka Audition ni Miike, at Gemini at A Snake of June ni Shinya Tsukamoto (sa mga Japanese movies, get the korean r3 version.  Kasi cheaper siya dun sa r2 Japanese version).

I haven't watched horror films for the loooooooooooooongest time now, and I really don't recommend to anyone to watch them. But just for the sake of this thread, the two scariest movies of all time for me are:

1. Salem's Lot (David Soul) --> Seen this when I was a kid, and I had nightmares after. Thank God I'm delivered from it now. This film is not grotesque but reeeeally scary! It will literally keep you at the edge of your seat (or out of it because of the terror).

2. The Exorcist --> I think a lot of people would agree with me on this one.

So there you go!

Have you watched this again recently, neilbern? It also literally gave me nightmares when I was a kid, and I was looking forward to seeing it again. But when I watched it recently... it was actually very quaint and not really scary. Either I'm not afraid of vampires anymore, or horror has become much more sophisticated in the Millennium

I agree with The Exorcist, though. And there's something about The Omen that also gives me the creeps.

Another film that scared me when I was young was The Changeling. I'm not sure if that one will still be scary, though, if I watch it again.

Nope, not recently. But I guess you're right. Compared to today's horror flicks, Salem's Lot may not have the same effect it had when we first saw it as kids. I guess it is due to the fact that we've seen it already and that we know what to expect in the movie, so that kinda dampens the movie's effect on us. But if people will see it for the first time, I think it would still be ranked as one of the scariest movies of all time (not considering the high-tech effects, of course). I also think there are too many vampire movies out there to choose from.

Maybe those of you who haven't seen this movie can give it a try and judge for yourselves if it deserves to be one of the scariest movies of all time.

The Exorcist - We were watching this using the office computer.

Ive watched a lot of scary, gore fest movies too.  But this one....Zombie Hellhouse, which is a classic film in the 70's i think is really
scary stuff.  The Fog, Ginger Snaps 2, 3.  Dog Soldiers, Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2. Wrong Turn, The Serpent and The Rainbow, disturbing
voodooism, The Grudge and Darkness Falls.  Also Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento Films are scary in its ambiance and story.

Kung slasher films, I really like Halloween and the Scream trilogy...

Kung horror, definitely The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)... gustong-gusto ko yung spider-walk scene ni Regan sa stairs!!!

At kung gore nmn, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, di naman ganun ka-gory pero napapaisip ka lng na may mga tao pa lang ganun...

I go for Asian horror stuff rather than Hollywood stuff because the latter treats horror, particularly the supernatural as something that co-exists in everyday reality.  The lack of scoring and visual effects making it more chilling.  When you leave the theater or turn-off your player, the story and images linger, as if taunting your own reality.

My list:
1.  Ringu
2.  Ju-on
3.  Three
4.  Three Dumplings

But of course, there are also bad asian films such as this Indonesian version of "The Blair Witch Project" titled "Pontiak" which I saw at the Cinemanila festival a few years back.

The producers of the film were interviewed regarding this famous Urban Legend and they confirmed its not a ghost however during the time the VHS video was released they kept their mouth shut as it might affect the growing video sales of it.

Although I liked this movie, I found the underground scenes from Irreversible (when the two guys were looking for Tinea aka the guy who butt f* Monica, in the sluthouse or whatever they call that place) very disturbing because I believe those types of place really exist!

I haven't seen the exorcist yet(thank God) but I think the upcoming "Exorcism of Emily Rose" would also scare a lot (based on the trailers, at least). The claim is this movie was based on a real case to boot.

Locally (and recently) I've caught the movie Pasiyam (Matti) on cable and there were some scenes(with the medium), specially the finale that made my wife refuse to go and pee alone. :o It was a good thing because the feeling was certainly mutual. :-[

Dude, don't fall under the deceptive trailer of "Exorcism of Emily Rose" .. its basically more of a courtroom drama movie than a horror movie.

i have to agree with most of the people who said the exorcist as the scariest film ever.  i dont scare that easy but i really cannot bring myself to see it in the middle of the night all by myself.  it's just plain too creepy.

does the mothman prophecies count too?  i also find this one creepy specially the scene where richard gere talks to the mothman by the phone and he knows everything about him and says in time he will see his dead wife again?  sabagay you can  say that it's more of an xfiles clone but it still spooks me everytime i see it.

lastly, cannot remember the title of this tv flick i saw in the 90's, i think it was the haunting or something and there was this scene that one of the main characters went to bed, and when she laid her head on her pillows, she heard whispers coming through the pillow.   cannot really recall that much but that scene was scary.  could not sleep for days with a pillow.  does anybody remember that one.  all i can remember about it was that it was supposed to be based on real events.

Some of the scariest movies I saw were seen in the movie house for the first time.  But when the time came to see their DVD releases at home, the scare factor is no longer there.  Familiarity takes out much of the excitement in movie watching at home.   ;D  But that's just me.

These are the movies I find hard to watch alone in the dark even though I've seen them more than twice already:

The Exorcist
The Eye- even the restaurant scene's really creepy and that was shot in broad daylight
The Grudge Unrated- especially the whole "girl w/o a jaw in the lobby" scene and the stair sequence in the climax

Still have to see The Shutter. Looks promising.

Same here.  Salem's Lot has stuck with me, even after 30 years.  Baka nga it has a stronger impact on kids, or it was ahead of its time...

Jeepers Creepers was a B-movie which exceeded all expectations.  I found that suspenseful.

Ringu Series didn't live up to the hype for me.

An American Haunting (2005)

Based on true events that took place in Tennessee during the 1800s, where an unrelenting demon haunts and torments a teenage girl and her wealthy family. It is based on the alleged only documented true case in U.S. history of a spirit causing a person's death.

The ambient sounds alone scared me.

+ 1,000 on Salem's Lot (1979) ...... in all honesty, this is one movie I don't recommend kids watching. Never let kids watch this.

It has some of the most haunting and scariest images ever (!) e.g. vampire on the rocking chair, vampire woman looking for her child, vampire boy floating and tapping on his friends window, etc.

I also saw this recently since I was looking for a good horror movie but was disappointed. probably because of the new movies with good CG and sound.

Drag me to hell nakaka gulat din and Mama.

There's one very "memorable" scene in Salem's Lot (1979) .......

The protagonist already suspects that the recent deaths in his beloved town, is due to vampires. He is out to prove that the dead will eventually rise as a vampire.

He stakes out a recently deceased woman by watching over her dead body in the hospital (the body is covered in one of those hospital bedsheets). He begins to make a cross out of tongue depressors and starts praying the David's psalm.

As he's finishing of his prayer, he begins to see the dead body twitch around and begin to come to life ...... he begins to panic and hurries to finish his cross and his prayer. Then the woman rises as a vampire. Great stuff.

By the way, the 2004 version pales in comparison to the original one.

Actually The Haunting (1999) wasn't that scary.

Para di OT:

Superstition (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084739/) (1982)- scared me before.

You can feel the malevolence of the evil spirit in the movie because of the sound effects. I'm having second thoughts if I will watch this again (baka dapat may kasama  ;D)

I watched the Omen 1976 ata. It was a bad idea watching it alone. I mean it's not really that scary but when you have a son you get a lot of crazy things running in your head.

Im not sure about the title..
Its a 3 in 1 kind of movie.
Its thai..
The scariest one, being that about four friends who went on a camping, then an accident happened while they were in the river.
It was thought that one of them drowned, but at some point, he reappeared.
That was where the horror started, when the rest of the group were suspecting that the who reappeared might, in fact, be dead already..
The scariest part to me was when they all had to spend the night together inside the tent, at takot na takot yung tatlo to be beside dun sa isang akala nila nalunod, pero nagbalik..
I feel creeped out just trying to recall the scene.
Only watched it once, di ko na kinayang inulit.
In fact, pag nagbabrowse ako sa dvd collections ko before, and i come across it, kinikilabutan ako..so i had to keep it somewhere..
Di ko na tuloy maalala where, kaya di ko na rin maalala title.

Ringu scared me sh_tless.

But I like the classics better - The Omen is very well made and gives me the creeps to this day.  I liked it better than Exorcist.

But for sheer originality and imagination nothing beats Hell Raiser.  The original was scary and well... very original but one of the sequels, I don't remember which, had such a surreal and convincing vision of hell it was just quite simply nightmarish.

Oh yeah, I liked Poltergeist when it first came out.  It was original.  But after that, most horror movies relied too much on special effects (like Poltergeist did) and as special effects got better over the years, it made the ones on Poltergeist look amateurish and thus not scary.
