Anyone collecting Documentary DVDs?
-
I'd like to. I'm eyeing the Nova series of docus -- reviews I've read tend to rate these pretty highly. So far I've only collected the Mysteries and Myths of the 20th Century 5-disc boxed set. I decided to purchase the set because I'd seen some episodes on Discovery Channel and found them adequately satisfying. They brought back childhood memories of watching those Unexplained Mysteries docus about the curse of Tutankhamen, the Loch Ness monster, UFO's, etc., narrated by Leonard Nimoy. I'm a real sucker for that kind of stuff. ;)
I recall BENTLY mentioning that he has the Space docu (is that the one produced by Tom Hanks for HBO?).
I know that Carl Sagan's Cosmos is available on DVD, but I found that show pretentious compared to his British counterpart's (the BBC's science journalist, James Burke) effort, Connections: An Alternative View of Change. Unfortunately, neither the original Connections, nor its later incarnations (Connections II and III), are available on DVD. Damn. But if it ever makes it, I highly recommend that show.
Another appealing thing about documentary collections is that they are usually low-priced. You just have to be extremely choosy, and do your due diligence on the documentary in question, because some of the low-priced ones are so terrible they are unwatchable.

I want to get Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography and A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies. Also some of the Errol Morris docus like The Thin Red Line, which literally saved a man's life.
Then there's Heart of Darkness, about the making of Apocalypse Now, and Pretty as a Picture: The Art of David Lynch, which should be self-explanatory.
And music docus like Radiohead: Meeting People is Easy.

I have Scorsese's Personal Journey - it's very informative, especially about "older" movies.
-
Walking With Dinosaurs is cool!

I have some IMAX DVDs, if they can be considered documentaries. I really like the educational value of these DVDs. But, they are not as extensive as I want them to be, subject-wise, that is.

I'm looking for _The World at War_. According to one source, it's supposed to be available in Australia. I've only seen it for sale in the UK, and I can't seem to find DVD copies for sale on-line in the U.S. For some details, check out

Well I bought the World at War five disk pack and I must say It was worth my money. Each disk contains about 5 episodes per side of the disk for a total of 25 hours of actual footages aand interviews . This is a must have, I must say if you are a World War II fanatic. Try watching the episode on U-boats and The Battle of The Atlantic then watch the movie U-571 or Das Boot and you'll get more insight to what it was really like back then. The Normandy landings episode can be followed by Saving Priavate Ryan.
I just hope they make a DVD of Band of Bothers. I'm sure alot of us will be buying the DVD.

This one's also on my wish list.
Well, I really want to collect some documentaries on DVDs,too. Unfortunately, it's my last choice of genre at the moment (damn! too many DVDs! not enough money! ;D). I have started collecting some but these are mostly World War 2 related topics (something to share with my brothers and Dad):
World War 2: The Lost Color Archives
National Geographic's Battle for Midway
Into the Arms of Strangers
Also on my wish list of documentaries are:
Crumb, Mr. Death:The Rise and Fall of Fred Leuchter, Jr., Triumph of the Will, etc.

What about Titanic (5 DVD-set)?
Any feedback?

I like documentaries on DVDs, especially the ones dealing with the supernatural or the occult. I treated myself with two recently, they are "Ghost Stories" boxset which has 3 disc and "Phenomenon" which is about UFO's and conspiracy theories. The Ghost Stories DVDs is satisfactory, although the video makes it seems that your watching it from an old VHS tape, but irronically that makes it even spookier watching it, I especially like the captured ghost images in that docu. The Phenomenon DVD is lacking in documented picures or videos of UFO, I was expecting to see a lot of it on this Docu. ;)
Is the Alien Autopsy Documentary available on DVD? I saw it on Laser before and its a good docu on this genre.

The Viva Sale has a good documentary DVD - Into the Arms of Strangers :)

Pseudo-docus:
Bowling for Columbine
Fahrenheit 9/11
Super Size Me!
Nakuryente ako sa mga ito. I only got my money's worth from Spellbound.

Forgotten Silver co-directed by Peter Jackson.
Theatrically released in '95, this is the latest DVD release (second) from October '04.
It's a very entertaining, well concocted ( ;)) and inspired filmmaking.
I won't spoil you if you've never heard of it before. And I think it's best to view it before you search on-line for the story....about the story. Or watch the bonus features of the disc.

I've been planning to buy spellbound and Capturing the Friedmans, maybe a couple of months from now pag may pera na, i've seen some scenes of spellbound in oprah and it seemd fun and interesting. capturing the friedmans naman sounds very intiguing. sana magaing available na lang dito locally para mas mura bilhin.
