Title: The Amazing Race 8: Family Edition
Post by: AshKetchum on Feb 10, 2005 at 01:45 PM
From USA Today:

Families get into the game

The eighth season of The Amazing Race, which is due next fall, will be a family affair.

In its biggest wrinkle yet, the show will pit fewer, but larger, four-member teams of relatives. But not just Mom, Dad and two kids: Applicant teams can consist of siblings, three-generation families, even engaged couples with one set of parents.

"We're really looking for strong back stories," such as an estranged but newly reunited family, host Phil Keoghan says.

All racers must be 12 or older; at least one per team must be 21 or older. Race 8 will be filmed this summer, during school vacation.

"Putting families out there in this format will bring a completely different dynamic" says Keoghan, who will begin a cross-country casting call in early spring (applications at www.cbs.com).

A ninth season, which returns to the original format, is scheduled for early 2006.

Good Lord....Sobrang stressful na yung race, may kids pa? Aren't there child labor laws in the USA for minors appearing on TV for a said number of hours?

While it sounds interesting and different, I'm not completely sold on the idea yet. I don't think I'd like to see a bunch of screaming kids and their aggravated, stressed-out parents compete on this show. Has this show jumped the shark already or what?  :P

A season I can pass on...

The teams who will have 12-17 year-olds as members could be at a disadvantage.

They were having an open casting call here the other week and the ad on TV said the age minimum is 8 years old.

For me, it's an interesting concept. Come to think of it, independent naman ang mga american kids and they can handle themselves. It would be nice to see how this concepot is brought into actual production. Worth giving a chance and a try.  ;)

The teams were announced today:

Dami! Hirap tandaan.

I'm still not juiced up for TAR: Family Edition, and rumors have it that test screenings of the first three episodes have fared very poorly, so they're still trying to figure out ways to edit the show to make it more exciting.

I hope I'm wrong.

Don't you guys think its unfair that two teams have preteen kids while some teams are all-adult?

Not really. I mean, the parents knew what they were getting into when they signed up their preteens for the show. It was their choice to include them in their teams, knowing fully well that other teams would probably be older in composition.

And any parents who choose to place their preteen children in a reality show deserve whatever comes to them, IMHO.  ::)

One of the teams with kids got eliminated. They were not even able to leave the US. I have a feeling that the Italian family will get eliminated in the next pit stop.

I cannot help but root for Gaghan family. This family reminds me of the Incredibles.

It'd be boring if they didn't leave Northern America.

i think it's a precaution they made since some of the contestants are not of legal age.  :-[

personally... i freaked at one of the tasks they had today. especially knowing that one of their family members died years ago in a similar (albeit more dangerous) incident.  :-X

I like: the Gaghan family, the Weaver family and the Black family (too bad they were the first eliminated, they're the nicest).

I dislike the Paolo family but they are fun to watch. Hahaha!!!!

I'm rooting for the Black family and they were the first to be eliminated. Iwas kinda hoping that Team number 9 on the pit stop would be eliminated.

I hate the look of disappointment on the Black kids' eyes. They have to face the reality of life at a young age-- FULL OF DISAPPOINTMENTS!

I totally agree with the Incredibles comparison; I hope they make it to the final three. 8)

Love this family; the kids are probably the most adorable racers ever to join TAR. And they gave me one of the best TAR moments ever IMO, when they started singing "She's Coming Down The Mountain" as they passed the dumbstruck Aiellos in the buggys--that was priceless.  ;D
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 8: Family Edition
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Sep 29, 2005 at 10:36 AM
"Different strokes for different folks" talaga. I had the opposite reaction to the kids singing. I had an urge to go up there and slap them silly. They come across as annoying little brats to me.

I love the Paolos. They're like JB on Pinoy BB - once you get rid of them, a large part of the entertainment value of the show will be gone. They need to stick around a while - dysfunctional is funny!

Okay, I know I'm being politically incorrect, but when Phil said "The Black family from Woodbridge, Virginia" and the camera panned to them in the back, I really burst out laughing. Too bad they were eliminated - now those were kids I liked.

Who do I think will win? I'm still following the old "alpha male" rule, so probably the Aiellos. But I haven't correctly picked a winner this early since TAR 2, so what do I know?  ::)

The Black Family are like the Brady Bunch minus the charisma. I do not think they will be exciting to watch had they not been eliminated.

Go go Gaghan!

It would have been great to see those kids (the Black) in action.  Pero I really want the Incredibles family to win this one.  They are such a great family.

I wanted the Paolo family to be eliminated first kasi they seemed disfunctional.  anyways, they are still in.

One of these days, either one of the Paolo family members will reach their breaking point, and that could cost them a whole lot.

On the first episode, the Paolo kids acted like dumb and dumber...

i really like the Gaghan Family!!  the kids are really competitive! galing nila!!   ::) ::)

well i don't like the Black Family although they are nice...  feeling ko sobrang weak yung mga kids nila...  ccomparing their kids to the Gaghan i think almost the same age lang naman sila pero mukahng mas marurunong and mas competitive yung Gaghan.   the Black kids couldn't even row properly...  getting a bucket of water lang nahulog na, di pa makatayo sa sarili...  sorry i know a lot of you like the Black family...  yeah they are nice but not competitive enough in my opinion...

Paolo Family...  too much yacking and bickering!!!   ;D ;D ;D  look at the dad, napapailing nalang sa sigawan ng nanay and 2 anak!!  haha   ;D ;D

yung family na 4 ladies (3 pink shirts and 1 blue shirt), ang INGAY lang nila sakit lang sa tenga!!  hehe   ::)

i was just thinking, sana they got 5 SMITH families...  or 5 JONES familes...  common naman yun surname eh...  sarap sana discussion natin dito sa forum!!!  ang gulo!!!  hahaha ;D ;D :o :o ;D ::)

The primeteime telecast seems to be needing more advertisers. During breaks, instead of seeing product ads, you get to watch Barkada TRip and ads for Studio 23's shows. Maybe the show is really losing audiences.

They ARE going outside the U.S.

They'll be eliminating teams within the U.S. for the first few episodes to save on travel expenses. (40 people instead of the usual 22 people).

Among the countries they will be rumored to be visiting: Panama, Costa Rica and Canada.

But it's also fun to see Americans act stupid in their own lands.  ;D

This "Family Edition" is more of a Road Trip than a race around the world--you already know that the travelling is limited to the Americas once the opening credits showed a huge American flag, and the "destinations" in the official web site just shows a map of the USA, Central America, and the tip of South America.

I don't know, but I'm enjoying this edition, just seeing "normal" families race across the USA and having fun while doing it, and almost all of these families are likable (except maybe for the Schroeder Dad, who's a jerk).

I'm in the minority here, but I don't consider watching obnoxious asswipes like Rob Mariano as "entertainment"--it's more of like having your teeth pulled out.

They ARE going outside the U.S.

I hope you're right! I also thought this installment would be confined to the US, especially after the first few minutes of yesterday's show. Phil's opening narration has always been "...this was the (first, second, third...) pitstop in a race around the world." Yesterday, he said, "...this was the first pitstop in The Amazing Race."

Although the quality of the show may have gone down to those of us who've been watching it from the start, its American ratings are picking up, thanks in part to its three consecutive Emmy wins. Frankly, despite being confined to the US, I still find this reality show way more interesting than any recent Survivor or Pinoy Big Brother.

I hope Studio 23 sticks with this show, since I really can't stand watching AXN's edited broadcasts. Ever since they started cutting 2-3 minutes out of all their programs, AXN has been dead to me.

What's even more painful: The Schroeder family got eliminated in their own hometown. They don't even get that consolation prize of a brief sightseeing vacation which is usually given to eliminated contestants. Their house was also destroyed by hurricane Katrina. They're currently staying with the Rogers. They said they like everyone but the Weavers.

Linzes
Paolos

That task seemed tailor-made for the kids--finding a red bean is an easy task for kids, because kids are usually determined to find stuff like that; why else do they have all those Where's Waldo books?

If the Gaghans let Billy or Carissa do that task, they might've gone way ahead of the Weavers. I'm really sorry to see them go...now I'll go root for the Paolos or Bransens.

No TAR the following week (Nov 15, 16 here) CBS is giving way to the Country Music Awards or something like that.

I wonder how the Weavers are going to get even with the Paolos for yielding them, if it's in their nature to get even.

They'll probably call on Jesus to smite them down.  ;D

Have not seen all the episodes consistently but i really like the Weavers... how come all the other teams seem to loathe them... am i missing something?  :P

I like the Paolos too. The mom is a trooper. Nung first episode, grabe super dysfunctional nga sila... not so ngayon slight lang.  ;D

Well, according to an interview with Papa Gaghan, that during the leg where the Weavers won, they isolated themselves. This caused the teams to not trust them. It doesn't help that they have exhibited strange behavior like dancing around in the Waffle Place (just before the space camp roadblack) and complaining loudly on the bus like they're "inaaapi" and the constant snubbing and mistrust that the mother has treated the other teams.

It also doesn't help that they think of themselves as "Christian" yet make fun of other people behind their back and being in general very self-righteous and hypocritical.

I hope they win...

Are you people watching the same show I am?

The Weavers threw GARBAGE at the other team's van all the while saying how proud they are to be Christian. When one of the Godlewski sisters came over and tried to comfort them during the go-kart roadblock, they badmouthed them immediately afterwards and complained how "fake" they are and how they "lie". Yet they still whine to Phil how they're being persecuted because they're "Christian".

don't forget, they also insulted the paolos' pictures when they were yielded. i tried to like this team, but they are just too weird, and i have an instant aversion to racers who constantly call out loud on jesus to help them.

with the paolos out, it's hard to root for the remaining teams, but i'd like the bransens to win. the linzes are rather meh, and the godlewskis shriek too much--very annoying.

Close Call!!!

The Godlewskis beat the Linzes dahil masyadong mabigat ang mga... three Linz brothers. Nagkukumahog ang kanilang motorboat sa pag-usad.

Interesting facts:
Godlewskis: Team #1 3 times, Last team in the Pack once (not eliminated)
Paolos: Team #2 twice, Last Team in the Pack (ELIMINATED)

this week's show is preempted by a special... that's why we had a 2-hour TAR last week.  ;)

I guess they'd like to keep the suspense factor up. Season 8 is drawing to a close, with only 4 teams remaining.

A family got Yielded but no one's eliminated.

I'm sure Utah folks and the Mormons were angered by the behavior of one family (YES, THEM!) in this episode!

I was kidding when I said this, but it became true. I've only seen three episodes so far this season.

Bring on the next "regular edition," please!

good thing it's on the it's last few episodes... one thing i noticed this season tho, there seems to be a prize to the first place finishers for EACH OF THE LEGS. (i guess all those awards makes the sponsors dig deeper into their pockets. LOL.)  ;)

Or it could also be the responsibility of the production team to have not included that remark. They can always edit that. While that family said something insulting, it could have been prevented if that was not shown on tv.  ???

Corny, the best ending would have been if the Weavers got to the map puzzle first with a big lead and nalampasan pa rin sila ng Linzes and Bransens.  ;D

That puzzle would have been quite a task for a group of people who weren't sure Pennsylvania was a state and who thought Lake Pontchartrain was one of the Great Lakes. ::) There would have been a heck of a lot of praying though. ;D

I hope next time there aren't any religious freaks on the teams...

Hindi lang sila malakas, nagkakasundo pa sila most of the time. Never did they argue or bicker at each other unlike some teams.

According to people who attended the TARCon party (thrown by fans and held on the night on the finale), every family on TAR8 showed up for the party except one--guess who?  ;D

The Linzes, Bransens, Gaghans, and Blacks were all there, and brought their other siblings/children with them, the ones who didn't join TAR.

Btw, there was one more challenge that wasn't aired on TV; after the Linzes were proclaimed the winners of TAR8, a special challenge was given to the 2nd and 3rd placers, the Bransens and the Weavers, and the prize was a GMC Yukon XL Utility Vehicle (the same one they've been using throughout the race). The challenge involved Geography--guess who won?  ;D

Watch that special challenge here: http://www.cbs.com/gmc/

According to the other families, the Weavers isolated themselves all the time, and rarely mingled with them, not even during pitstops. So while everyone's polite to them, they still don't think highly of them.
