help! any ideas where i can get this title? dvd, vcd or even vhs copy will be ok... kahit na siguro film reel... i need it "desperately", don't ask why... salamat!

It's so tragic. This great film will probably never make it to dvd :'(
In the meantime, we are all assualted by those bad flicks that make it to the vcd/dvd market.

Its now on Star Cinema's schedule to release this great classic in the future but they are having second thoughts since baka sangkatutak na naman ang magrereklamo at magmamagaling like what happened with the release of HIMALA since they can only depend on the umatic transfer that they had.
They were looking for the best copy from Road Runner which painstakingly cleaned the master print during its 20th anniversary at Greenbelt Cinema but Road Runner lost their copy. The correct chronological order was finished at last!

There's a big difference between "nagmamagaling" and people who actually KNOW what they're talking about when it comes to appropriate picture quality for DVD releases they'll be paying for.
keating, who made that comment? Malou Santos is a very good personal friend of mine, and I will tell her directly that apparently, her employees are condescending and sarcastic when given constructive criticism.
And please tell your source that the worst thing about their Himala release wasn't the shoddy picture quality. It's that they didn't give a teaser on the back cover - they gave the whole d**n story, all the way to the ENDING. I don't think there's any other legitimate DVD releasing company in the world that would be that irresponsible with spoilers. Now that's something very wrong with their release that they can't blame on their U-matic transfer.

I guess it would depend really on the available source that they had. I didn't say that you were nagmamagaling, Mr. Hankey.
But I think both sides have their points to ponder. If you will trace Oro's history it would be epic scale and long process also from the time it was conceived from the ECP days. And I even suggested to my source that let Mondo Video buy the rights of the film so that it would be release in excellent manner just like Elwood Perez' SILIP.
My point also is...... instead of ranting we should be thankful that these classic films are now beginning to see the light of dvd format.

The top floor of fully booked at High Street has some Filipino videos. Not sure if they carry the film you are looking for though. The one I can remember off the top of my head are other Lino Brocka films.

Just like that? They lost the copy and they weren't sued? ;D How could they lose a copy? Was their hard drive containing the cleaned digital master erased?
If that digital master fell into the hands of pirates, there should already be bootleg copies of Oro. But I don't see any in the stalls I visit.
Did they have the prints telecined in 1080p or higher, digitally cleaned frame by frame and audio-remastered into 5.1 DTS-MasterAudio for subsequent high def release and digital theater release? I believe they should have as that would also allow for standard DVD release. They should be doing that for at least the top 20 pinoy films. And OPM is one of them that will stand out for generations.

Its definitely not on 5.1 DD but the video quality was near perfect during its 20th Anniv. screening, colors are alive and vibrant minus the subtitles. It was probably erased from their hard drive or they didn't make a back-up at all.
The fault should also go to that s**tty LVN technician who reproduced the master print by splicing the film master and editing it by himself causing Peque to walked out during the screening at World Cinema Centennial celebration in Sm Megamall back in the 90's. That print was the one being aired at Cinema One.

What amateurs!! ??? Were the people involved fired? They should be. This is clear evidence and an indictment of the immaturity and thoughtlessness of many in the local film industry.

u-matic tape ang source ng dvd ng himala? wala ba sila nung master negative nung pelikula? kasi di ba nag-auction dati ang ecp ng lahat ng films nila (na nabili ng abs). hindi ba mismong master negative ang ibinenta? kung hndi, nasaan yung master negative?
naitanong ko lang ito kasi, nung ipinalabas ulit yung tinimbang ka ngunit kulang sa isang film restrospective, may nagbanggit (si nick deocampo yata) na ang bagong print na ipapalabas noon ay courtesy ng ccp. ibig sabihin, nakapag-print sila ng bago. inisip ko, meron pa sigurong master negative ito o kaya may sapat na pera ang ccp (kung sakaling mahal ang pagprint ng bago.)
kung merong master negatives ang mga pelikula ng ecp (at pati ang ibang prod outfit tulad ng regal, lvn at sampaguita), bakit puro mga gasgas na existing positive prints ang ipinapalabas nila sa retrospectives (at re-runs sa tv) at ginagamit sa dvd/vcd transfers?
isa pa. noong ipinalabas sa cinemax a few years ago yung madrasta at bata bata (part ng asian series nila), ang linaw ng kopya. parang sa foreign film. kaya excited ako nung bilhin yung dvds baka sakaling ganito rin ang kulay. pero hindi.

It's a full screen, 2 channel stereo release on a DVD9 disc. The picture quality isn't as ugly as Himala, but they haven't really cleaned anything up. Scratches, reel change marks (and transitions), and dust particles galore! But none of the ugly film-imprinted subs. The English subtitles can be turned on and off and sometimes they skip over a few lines of dialog.
I've only watched halfway through it but it seems like the editing has no issues. These came up during the first 30 minutes of the movie, right? The party scenes and some from the mountain hideaway? At least that's what I remember from when I viewed the "incorrectly edited" film reels back in 1997.
It's not the Oro I was hoping for. But whatever ABS-CBN has right now, based on the DVD copy, is a good, clean print they can start "real" restoration on. Here's hoping they do the right thing and release a future enhanced version.

Yuh, there were a couple of them on the shelf in front of Astro Robinsons Place Ermita. But it should be in wide distribution on all stores (Astro and Odyssey etc.) judging by how Himala was also distributed across all DVD stores in the city.

Just a quick note on this thread - it's a bit cheaper to buy this (and other Star Cinema releases) at the ABS-CBN compound than at Astro/Odyssey. This sells for 299 at Astro vs. 260 at ABS-CBN. In case you live or work in the area...
For a local release of a film this old, I think the picture quality is excellent, dust and debris noted. Much, much better than Himala and Manila By Night.

No widescreen version. Even the one with original subs shown at the MIFF in 1983 its in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Its good that they finally release it on dvd format.

Yuf. Talagang tinutukan ko (the chronological order, not the... never mind ;D )! I'm not sure about the foreplay, though. Just them getting ready by the falls, then deretso na sa seksssssss ;D
In my opinion, the foreplay was at the bahay kubo while Jo was stitching up the soldiers :o

The most complete one was Peque's copy with original subtitles translated by Joey Reyes. Its grainy, needs to be clean painstakingly.
Don't know the exact running time, though.

Finally got my copy from ABS :D
Though the print is marred by dust, particles and scratches, the print is at least watchable.
The colors are also pretty good.
The dialogue gets muffled in a few scenes.

Peque can now dispose his own copy with orig subs. Based on the screenshots posted by Dan, the video looks pristine.

just finished viewing the entire movie.
It's a good thing there are English subtitles because the dialogue gets really muffled in several scenes.
It's disheartening that there are no other subtitles, the more subtitle selections the more foreigners can appreciate our local films. Oh well :-\

Just dream for the Special Edition right now. The people behind the production team which includes Peque Gallaga, Rody Lacap (cinematography), Don Escudero (production design), Jess Navarro (editor) are willing to contribute for the retrospective docu without charging a single cent but the dvd has been released now!

General Thoughts:
1. When compared to the DVD re-release of Himala (http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,74167.msg1812226.html#msg1812226), the packaging of this disc is far superior. The front and back covers contain proper information on cast, crew, story, special features, and technical specs. I would have preferred an Amaray case, but it's on standard Star Cinema digipack packaging. At least it now has a proper hub for the disc, not just a foam stopper. One minor gripe: I wish their proofreader would have caught that the term is "remastered" and not "re-mastered." It just looks silly on the cover and spine.
2. The picture is widescreen anamorphic; it's a lot cleaner than the old release - no more debris and artifacts visible. Still not that sharp, though. I'm thinking maybe this was really how the film was shot. The audio is also significantly better than that of the previous release, which had issues with the sound being almost inaudible during a few scenes.
3. It has proper on/off subtitles.
4. The special features are interesting in that it has two audio commentaries, one by Peque Gallaga alone and another by Peque and some of the main cast (including Joel Torre, Cherie Gil and Fides Cuyugan-Asensio), and also two other features: Actual storyboards of the fight sequences in the film, and a scrolling version of Peque's original story treatment. I've never seen such features on a local disc before. I'd consider this a perfect release if they had included even a brief restrospective documentary. Too bad that they didn't film one, since they had assembled the cast together anyway for the commentary recording. Also, footage from the restoration premiere when the cast went up onstage before the film would have been a nice bonus.
On the whole, Oro Plata Mata has never looked nor sounded better on home video. This is a must-have in my book.

Picture quality is a big leap from the previous dvd release. Pristine video and yes this is OPM as you've never seen or heard before.
The commentary of Direk PQ was insightful and lots of tidbits about the film.
Kudos to Star Home Video for a job-well done! My only minor gripe is the cardboard packaging.

Got my copy of the restored Oro Plata Mata. I haven't seen it in full yet but I started watching it with Peque's audio commentary last night. I haven't finished it yet but the audio commentary itself (so far) is worth the purchase price. It's that good and informative! I noticed the improvement in image quality although the image appears to be very soft and flat. It seems to me that the restorers used too much digital noise reduction. There's also something off with the framing. Like Himala it seems like they open-matte it to 1.85:1 with the top and bottom cropped. There's a scene in particular where it's very noticeable. It's the one with Mary Walter catching the girls by the creek talking with a naked man (Ronnie Lazaro), where she ended up throwing guavas at him. There is a shot where a huge part of her head is cut off from the frame. I remember in the old DVD that that's not the case. I have to check out my old DVD later and compare.

As you can see this scene was badly cropped. I can't understand why they cropped Mary Walter's head instead of the boulders below the screen. Or why crop at all? What's wrong with 1.33:1 aspect ratio when it was the original framing?

I finally picked up a hard-to-find DVD of Oro, Plata, Mata over the last weekend after about 4 years of hearing the buzz about its restoration. This is the digitally restored and remastered special collector's edition of the delightfully-quirky director Peque Gallaga's iconic film, pressed on a dual-layer DVD-9 disc. (Some movies which run for more than 3 hours had to be pressed in two single-sided DVD-5 discs).

I was too young to watch the movie when it was first shown in Manila's theaters in 1982. At that time it was screened for mature audiences only. My parents and older relatives, however, went to see the movie and found themselves instantly "connected" with the storyline about life during World War II, as if they had relived their own ordeal and misery of being constrained to evacuate for their safety and live temporarily in a jungle somewhere in Northern Luzon. As a child, hearing their own stories was how I had become deeply curious about the film.

With the popularity of rental video stores everywhere, I had rented betamax tapes (oh yes, there had to be two tapes to accomodate the long movie in two parts!) and watched Oro on a CRT TV for the first time in 1983. One thing I didn't appreciate with the betamax version was the very poor quality of video. It was just darn too dark. Plus, there were constant tracking streaks and several distorted sections due to frequent rewinding of the rental tapes. Similar problems plagued the VHS copy of Oro acquired sometime in the early 1990s.

More than 30 years later, there is a big "wow" in watching the digitally restored and remastered version. On my 4k TV panel, I am now seeing details and colors in the film which I have never seen before. Quite a transition to watch this film for the first time in a full widescreen format (no black bars) compared to the 4:3 format which I had originally seen in the 1980s and 1990s.

Thankfully, the DVD comes with chapters, audio commentaries and some extras (trailers, story treatment, and fight scenes storyboard). Very rare even for a Filipino-produced DVD.
There are some caveats that I would like to point out about this DVD release.
Is this DVD a FULL HD release?
Okay, let's go by the numbers. Full HD provides 1080 lines with progressive scanning (also referred to as 1080p). However, it bears stressing that the highest resolution that the DVD format can support is 720 x 480 pixels per frame for NTSC (or 720 x 576 pixels per frame for PAL), which is at best only 37.5% of the resolution of 720HD (1280 x 720). The DVD packaging does not actually indicate the kind of audio mix. While my home theater system indicates the audio output to be of stereo signal, the audio sounds typically monaural to my ears. Take note, I have read that Oro was screened at the UP Film Center sometime in early 2015 with a new 5.1 mix which was "redone" in a US facility specializing in audio. Perhaps the new 5.1 sound mix came later and didn't make it to the DVD's pressing and release date.
Hopefully, ABS-CBN will eventually re-issue this film on bluray to get the FULL HD treatment (meaning, 1080p) with the new 5.1 audio mix. Even better if they can make this landmark film available in 4k video. I personally prefer to buy the physical bluray disc for my video library than stream a movie from iTunes or from any other streaming service.
Hats off to ABS-CBN Corporation, which has undertaken an admirably ambitious project of saving Filipino film classics, and to the Central Digital Lab with a group of about 16 people who reportedly worked on Oro for 1,700 hours (that's roughly 70.83 days or 2.36 months).

I finally picked up a hard-to-find DVD of Oro, Plata, Mata over the last weekend after about 4 years of hearing the buzz about its restoration. This is the digitally restored and remastered special collector's edition of the delightfully-quirky director Peque Gallaga's iconic film, pressed on a dual-layer DVD-9 disc. (Some movies which run for more than 3 hours had to be pressed in two single-sided DVD-5 discs).

I was too young to watch the movie when it was first shown in Manila's theaters in 1982. At that time it was screened for mature audiences only. My parents and older relatives, however, went to see the movie and found themselves instantly "connected" with the storyline about life during World War II, as if they had relived their own ordeal and misery of being constrained to evacuate for their safety and live temporarily in a jungle somewhere in Northern Luzon. As a child, hearing their own stories was how I had become deeply curious about the film.

With the popularity of rental video stores everywhere, I had rented betamax tapes (oh yes, there had to be two tapes to accomodate the long movie in two parts!) and watched Oro on a CRT TV for the first time in 1983. One thing I didn't appreciate with the betamax version was the very poor quality of video. It was just darn too dark. Plus, there were constant tracking streaks and several distorted sections due to frequent rewinding of the rental tapes. Similar problems plagued the VHS copy of Oro acquired sometime in the early 1990s.

More than 30 years later, there is a big "wow" in watching the digitally restored and remastered version. On my 4k TV panel, I am now seeing details and colors in the film which I have never seen before. Quite a transition to watch this film for the first time in a full widescreen format (no black bars) compared to the 4:3 format which I had originally seen in the 1980s and 1990s.

Thankfully, the DVD comes with chapters, audio commentaries and some extras (trailers, story treatment, and fight scenes storyboard). Very rare even for a Filipino-produced DVD.
There are some caveats that I would like to point out about this DVD release.
Is this DVD a FULL HD release?
Okay, let's go by the numbers. Full HD provides 1080 lines with progressive scanning (also referred to as 1080p). However, it bears stressing that the highest resolution that the DVD format can support is 720 x 480 pixels per frame for NTSC (or 720 x 576 pixels per frame for PAL), which is at best only 37.5% of the resolution of 720HD (1280 x 720). In other words, the image that I see on my 4k TV panel is only the upscaled video from the 720 x 480 resolution of the DVD format which is its native highest resolution for NTSC.

I have been waiting for the BD version, which is why I held out on buying the DVD. Glad to know that studios in the Philippines finally realize that 480p is a legacy format.

I highly doubt that they'll ever release Pinoy movies on bluray as there is no market for it. For HD, the only option is iTunes. It's mostly Star Cinema that does it though. But do check them out as the iTunes versions are significantly better encoded that their DVD equivalent as Apple QA is quite stringent and they had the pass it before the movie gets accepted.

When Matti's ON THE JOB was released on bluray circa 2014, I had high hopes then that the local movie industry willl follow suit and "upgrade" their other releases from DVD to BD. Well, it didn't happen in the way I expected things to happen. It's rather slow or nearly non-existent.
I can only guess why a transition to BD is going to be a big challenge even for Star Cinema. Is there a local market for the BD format or the producers simply underestimate the Pinoys' preference for hi-def? Or is there enough content or material that deserves to be released in BD to make it a viable business?
Still, with the number of restored films now being churned out by Star Cinema, I have not given up that hope, especially with films like Oro.
I personally prefer to own a physical bluray disc over any streaming or video on demand online service.

Matti's ON THE JOB is a Filipino film produced by Star Cinema and Reality Entertainment. It was distributed both locally and abroad with international partners in the US (Wild Go USA Entertainment) and Madman Entertainment (Australia), among others.
It bears mentioning in the discussion because it is essentially a Filipino film that was released not only on DVD format but also on bluray. And for a local pioneering company like Star Cinema, if it so wishes, has that capability to release a Filipino film on bluray with its resources and ties with international distributors.

I have both the bluray and the locally produced DVD. The bluray has the international cut, which I prefer. It's more focused.
If I remember it correctly, the bluray has most of the features of the DVD except for the audio commentary.

My point is that I don't believe that any local producers will ever release Pinoy bluray discs since there is no market for them. I am hopeful - but I don't think that it's ever going to happen.
Star Cinema don't even release most of their restored films on DVD format due to lack of demand. For example, at the moment, you can only buy Karnal DVD from the ABS-CBN premises or in their special screenings. The only good thing is that it's been available on iTunes way before the DVD release, and the HD version is quite stunning - although it lacks the special features found on DVD.
The other few Pinoy films that have landed on bluray so far are the ones picked up by international distributors. The good thing now is that more Pinoy films seem to get screened, even winning major prizes in the international festival circuit thus improving their chances of being picked up by an international distributor and get a bluray release.
For example, I am so happy that we will finally get a hand on a BFI bluray release of Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag and Insiang by March next year. And a Criterion release for Maynila hopefully soon after.
