I don't think there's any specific "brand" for speaker stands.  First of all, determine the height you need.  Try to get the tweeter to be at around ear level.  Check out audio studio in mega for some speaker stands.  If you need something custom-made, call Jun Reyes at 805-8845.  He supplies a lot of the audio shops with speaker stands and he's really good.  I got a pair of speaker stands for around P4,000 (not sure about this) and will soon be having a center speaker stand made for P2,000.

Don't know exactly what speaker cables you're looking for.  If you're looking for audiophile-grade cables such as Kimber, MIT or Audioquest, you can expect to spend P5,000 and up for a six-foot pair which is a bit too much if you're wiring up a whole HT.  If you're looking for something more reasonable, go to Raon.  If I remember correctly, I got 10 gauge for around P100 a meter for copper in a clear jacket.  You should be able to get 12 or 14 gauge under P100.

Jun Reyes is very, very good.  Pulidong-pulido ang trabaho.  I am very happy with the 3 pairs of stands and TV/AV rack I had him make for me.

As for speaker cables, I don't really know what matches the B&W well but here's some general comments:

MIT/Transparent:  never really tickled my fancy.  Sounds wierd.  My best guess is those magic boxes they put in their wires are what muddies up the sound.

Monster Cable:  expensive for what it is.

Kimber:  rather bright (4TC, 4PR, 8TC, 8PR, PBJ).

van den Hul:  great interconnects (at least for my system).  Very neutral sounding, no character of its own.  Haven't tried speaker cables.

Ixos:  my current favorite.  I have the 6003's (the braided blue-purple one).  The difference in sound quality from my old Monster guage 14s made the money I spent truly worth it as an upgrade.

Tara Labs is supposed to be good.  I saw some Nordost at Audio Den.

If you want something cheaper, we can make stands made of wood lang...yun talagang mura lang!

I agree with rtsy, Jun Reyes (a.k.a. JGR). makes great speaker stands and racks.  He supplies Upscale Audio.  IMHO its better than those cheap and flimsy imported ones.  He can make a pair based on your required specs.  BTW, he can even copy those very expensive Sonus Faber Stands - the ones with wood at the sides.

Hi si Bonjit ako from Sydney Australia I would advise if you really want good speaker stands for your B&W 602
series 2 you might as well get the original stands for it kaya lang alam ko $450 Australian Dollars na ito dito sa Sydney, hindi ko lang alam kung magkano dyan sa Manila or kaya a pair of Soundstyle speaker stands which I use currently for my B&W 602 series 2 , they are very stable specially na sand fill ko pa. If you want
to find out kung available dyan sa Manila you have to find out yourself or  go to their website at soundstyle .com rated yung audio rack nila sa What HIFI.

just got a pair of B&W dm303 speakers. i'm considering mounting them to a metal hanger (bolted to ceiling frame, of course) instead of the standard stand mounts to keep my kids from hitting/playing around with them. any of you guys know

where i can find such mounts? is this a good idea in the first place? will this cause more sound distortion?

thanks!

Go to Handyman or SM Workshop, and look for the 'Perfect View' display. I'm not quite sure with the name, pero its got a 'view' in the end. Just ask the people there and tell them about the stuff they use to hang TVs or Speakers on the wall. The nice thing about the hangers is that some models do not need you to screw holes directly into your speakers. :)

just a follow up: what do you guys suggest? glue or screw mounting. parang nakakahinayang butasan yung dm303. on the other hand if i use a powerful glue, i might not have the flexibility of removing them from the mounts if, in the future, i decide to install the speakers elsewhere.

i called Jun Reyes and i find him very friendly and accommodating. the first thing he asked me was to get some measurements before i visit him. based on pictures posted by another member mukhang quality is not a question kay JGR.

haven't talked to him about prices though. to be honest, since my front\main speakers cost me less than $200, anything more than $50 is a little too steep for me. kung aabot ng $100 lalung malupit, halos bumili na din ako ng disenteng floorstanders-bakit pa ako nag-bookshelf?

thanks again guys!

would anyone know where I can get speaker stands for my Boss Accoustimass speakers? I recently read from someplace that it's better for speakers to be 1-2 feet above your ear level when seated, and my speakers are basically wall mounted at the very top of our room....

would gladly know where to get these stands, and for how much. thanks.
Title: Re:speaker stands
Post by: RMN on Oct 03, 2002 at 07:40 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't accoustimass speakers supposed to be really placed high up? Aren't they too small for speaker stands?
Title: Re:speaker stands
Post by: sgc_wdi on Oct 03, 2002 at 08:48 AM
I think accoustimass speakers can either be wall mounted or with stands, I've seen these stands on the internet, at boss' website... I've read sounds are better produced when these speakers are just about 1-2 feet above ear level when seated... but I'm not sure where I can get one here, or at least similar stands that are compatible with these speakers...

have you tried the local Bose shops?

i would assume you're using the the brackets? puede wall mount and ceiling mount...these are fully adjustable naman to suit how you want the speaker gets directed towards your listening position...

i got my stands and brackets from the states, but i saw them locally available like in sm city north edsa and megamall, also check out the one in powerplant (rockwell). i guess these things are being sold in those shops... either the short table top stands or the floor standers.

im not using my floorstanders, btw...'yaan mo i might get tempted to sell it  ;)

but just a personal thought... there seems to be no difference naman between using the brackets and the floor standers! well, thats as far as im concerned.

...i switched to brackets kasi when i needed the space. i have a very compact room (maybe thas why i cant see any difference hehehe)  :)

ic thanks... well I actually have these speakers at the very top of the room, but it's pointed towards me... anyway, I think the surround speakers can stay there, but the front speakers should be somewhere near the center speaker, not as far as the surround speakers as I've read from someplace... so in that case I might need to floorstands for both ront speakers...

Hi guys!

Just bought a pair of original B&W speaker stands for about $420 Aussie dollars, that's 28 pesos to 1 Aussie dollar. I don't know if it's cheaper there in Manila or here in Sydney. I'm not totally impressed with the stands. I was supposed to use it with my 602's but I found out they are not as stable as my Soundstyle stands so I decided on using it with my SS-86e sony speakers in my bedroom. It's okay if you're going to use it with small speakers but with bigger speakers it's a nono. Would you believe the speaker stands are made in Italy not England. I'm just happier with my Soundstyle stands, they're much more stable because of the four posts compared to the B&W's which only has two. Just a little bit of a feedback if you guys want to buy a pair of B&W stands yourself.

i am using marble stands for my speakers and  there is a big improvement both sonically and aesthetically. at first, my objective is just to have a better looking stand but after using it, the difference is there. the stand i have is 27" including spikes and hollow at the collumn filled with sand. i will never use metal stands again.

hi jermi!

sorry i just saw your reply...couldn't get a connection over the 4-day break.

i searched for about 1 and 1/2 months and i couldn't find any that would meet the following criteria:

- won't damage the speakers (no holes)
- securely bolted to the ceiling
- won't block the woofer, tweeter
- moveable attachment with multiple-angle options
- affordable

anyway, here are some links that you might find useful:

http://www.atmflyware.com
http://www.allenproducts.com/speaker_mounts.htm

my 303s are now wall mounted to serve as rears. my new fronts (602s3s) are still on locally made standmounts. if i find the right system, i'm still open to hanging my front and center speakers. i'll keep you posted, just in case.

i'm not sure if we are talking about the same stands - but i saw them also in western Festival mall: it looked like they were more suited to the HTIB speakers as the width of the base do not look to reach more than 6"

the height is adjustable via screwing the nut between the sliding poles (similar to a mike stand)

they were selling for less than 1,300 per pair i think

Try Superman, I kow he's selling his Lovan 24" at a reasonable price. Plus, you buy Lovans once, you'll probably never replace them.

I don't believe Perfect View includes spikes on the stands. It might be worth your time and the additional P300-P400 to get a spiked Lovan.

perfect view speaker stands have spikes  ;). they're just covered with some sort of rubber feet but you can remove them to reveal the spikes.

last time i checked at robinson's east hardware the 24" was 2k. i only saw 2 models (don't know though if they have others.

Hi Mods tired searching but could not find any threads related to this. If there is one, please merge.

I'm seeking any suggestions on good 24 to 28 in speaker stands for bookshelves and stackable shelves for my HF equipment.

Not sure if the economics on buying imported over Made to Order of DIY pay off. Also, anyone konw the disributor of Lovan?

If at all, can you guys provide contacts to MTO guys? Thanks for your inputs

You can also get lovan from Rene Rivo (Hyperaudio).  :)

Those Lovan stands and similar ones seem stable enough, Maybe if you can somehow fasten the bookshelf to the stand, the risk of it falling on the kid would be minimized if not eliiminated.   Just my 2 cents.

Post by: bachwitz on Apr 25, 2005 at 01:43 PM
Hi, good day to all.

Im a newbie in HT hobby.  I dont have to budget yet to buy speaker stands. Currently im just using a plastic chair (monobloc) that is positioned beside my tv for my fronts.
Will this alternative stand be ok for the moment? Or is it a big no no to use plastic stands?  I can assure you that the speaker is sturdy position, no rocking whatsoever.

Im planning to replace it when I already have the dough.

Thanks in advance guys.

Certainly not ideal, aesthetically and sonically.  But if the sound is ok with you, and it's just an interim, I see no problem.

Sir, can u elaborate on the sonic side?   thanks.

Your stands should be sturdy enough to handle vibrations of your speakers. unwanted vibrations have an effect on the sound you are hearing.

Just a simple guide, the tweeters of your speakers should be at the same level with your ears when you're in your listening position.

Cheers

Speaker stands are considered critical by many in the overall sound waves that arrive at your ears.  Manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure that the bookshelf speaker cabinet is, among other things,  rigid and with the least resonance to color the sound coming out. It would be ideal if you could suspend a bookshelf speaker in mid-air rigidly.  However, gravity requires that you must put them on top of something, whether a floor,  a shelf or a stand.  In your case, plastic monobloc chairs.

Unfortuantely, most surfaces on which a speaker rests have a nasty way of sympathetically singing with the speakers when they start to make sounds.  That's called resonance.   So you hear the furniture together with the speakers.  I am not sure of the resonance of plastic monobloc chairs.  Perhaps plastic isn't as bad as hallow wood or metal when it comes to resonating.  I haven't tried it myself.  But if rigidity and firmness are a big deal among speaker makers, I will have to think that plastic, however solid, would not figure in their list of speaker stands.

Sand or lead filling  is a common practice to dull the resonance of most commerically available metal and wood stands that are hallow.  Making them as heavy and as solid as possible often pushed their resonance outside of the audible range.  Moreover, the added weight helps preclude any chance that the stands might move together with the speakers during loud sounds.  In any speaker, whether floorstander or stand-mount, only the driver cones should move, nothing else.

So, if you don't listen at loud volumes and you don't find anything objectionable to the sound waves that reach your ears from where the speakers are, I see no problem. It's often the mid-bass that suffers, getting muddled, when using non-rigid stand-mounts.  And in the case of hallow metal stands that ring, you could modulate the mids and highs as well.  But I think if you listen quite close to the speakers(called nearfield listening),  most objections on speaker-stand combinations can sometimes be dismissed.  Just my thoughts.

DIY stands are OK,  I've built one myself out of 2x4 tanguile planks, using a marble slab as weight (ala Sonus Faber).  But if don't have a knack for DIYing, there are commercial stands locally available.  I bought a pair of metal stands before from perfect view for about P 2,000/pair.   It uses a hollow tube so you can sandfill it for stability.

Cheers

thanks for your help.

You can try Park Square 1, a lot of AV stores offering local and imported stands.

I haven't been to ACE hardware of SM Makati but perfect view products are readily available at ACE.

BTW, what do you want to compare? cost of a DIY vs. commercial?  making a pair of your own stands may not always come cheap but one good thing about DIY is that the stands can be spec'd out based on your requirements.   That's the hassle with commercial stands, you have to make do with what they have.

as a guide, make sure that your ears (at listening position) are at level with your speaker's tweeters.  The height of the stands you will be using will depend on the vertical position of the tweeter. (To calculate:  (A) measure the height of the tweeter from the ground, based on your desired listening position.  (B) Measure the distance between the tweeter and the bottom part of your speaker.  Subtract (B) from (A) to get the required height of your stands)

A sturdy stand is of importance. As av_phile mentioned, a sturdy stand minimizes unwanted resonance.  So make sure that your stands are sturdy enough not to be affected by the vibrations from your speakers.

Hope this helps. ;)

I have a wharfdale 9dfs, which speaker stands is best for my rear surround? I have a wharfdale 9cm center and 9.6 FR/FL.

hi sir kieron,

i think the dfs is really meant for wall mounting. but you can try to ask the dealer you bought it from if onkyo has mounting for sale for their dfs. or you can have the stands custom made.  ;D

I don't know if all Ace Hardware branches are selling these speaker stands, but maybe they are :)

I saw these speakers stands in Ace branches in SM fairview, SM Makati, SM Valenzuela and SM Megamall a few weeks or months ago :)

Goodluck and happy hunting ;)

I am looking for 36" speaker stands for my incoming bookshelves. Any idea where to look? Most stores carry 24" and 28" but not 36".

Base of the speaker is 8.25" x 11".

Aside from ACE and True Value, I saw a store of Perfect View along Timog Ave beside GMA 7. It is across Lydias Lechon.

Is this still open?

call Jun Reyes at 805-8845
he is the man who distributes speaker stand on audio and video shop here in mtro manila.

Is this still his number?

*Modified to update pic of my set up

My set up looks like this -

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/2014-03-03163824_zps8d25662f.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/2014-03-03163824_zps8d25662f.jpg.html)

I've been advised to get a center speaker stand.

Considering my set up, do I just make a DIY type na box and place the center speaker on top? Or are there center speaker stands available in the market which can be placed on top of a shelf (instead of on the floor)? Wallmount is not an option at this time.

you can make your own stand if you have the time sir. I used to have one before, Lovan ata ung brand, its a solid metal center speaker stand, triangle ang shape with adjustable spikes para pwede mo itilt patingaala if needed. this helps in minimizing or removing reflections from the surface of the shelves

after researching further, ang naisip ko as my other option, if all else fails, is just get one of those rubber door stops or other cone shaped thing, and just place them under the front portion of the speakers para nakaangat.

Actually thinking of getting the Gramma or Subdude, as well, for my sub. Though the cost is making me think of alternatives muna.

Best is try muna to experiment on what height is optimal for you, you ca use cans(coke, cornbeef, sardines) wood, etc. Also try din kung sa top ng TV mo blu tac/dikit directing pababa.
Title: Re: speaker stands
Post by: Gino on Mar 09, 2014 at 11:13 AM
If you are happy with the focus of your mains in stereo, then matching their tweeter height is a good bet. Measure the distance from listener to one of the main speakers. Use that distance to place your center. Start there using provisional platforms (boxes, chairs, etc.) Fine tune distance if needed. Once happy, have custom stand made.

Related to question above, which type absorbs more vibration?

Considering my set up kasi, where center (and the stand) is to be placed on a built in shelf, dapat yata mas kaya mag absorb para mabawasan vibration.
Title: Re: speaker stands
Post by: Gino on Mar 09, 2014 at 01:31 PM
It's all about density of stands if isolation is the intention. Some wooden stands can be very dense and resonance is impossible. Sand filled stands is a safe bet because these have been used successfully everywhere.

In rare instances, users use wooden box stands to do the opposite. They opt to couple the speakers on the wooden box to enhance bass. This is with a slight expense of tonal balance and image precision.

If you are happy with the focus of your mains in stereo, then matching their tweeter height is a good bet.

Just want to clarify this - so the height of the tweeter of the center speaker should be equal to the tweeter of the fronts? Even if that would make the woofers of the center speaker higher than the woofers of the fronts?

For those who suggested experimenting, I am following your suggestion and I'm now using my router's box as  a stand, just to check what the ideal height should be. It's about 2.5 inches:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/2014-03-09140443_zps1046c795.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/2014-03-09140443_zps1046c795.jpg.html)

I think the stand can be 3-4 inches.

Yes. Our ears are able to localize high frequencies better. That affects imaging. It is not a hard rule but a starting point. If it doesn't sound correct or it disturbs you cosmetically, move them.

Hi Mam,

I guess what we wanted to achieve is, during dialogue sa movie, dapat yung boses sa TV Screen nanggagaling. Pansinin mo pag nanonood ng sine sa sinehan, pag nagsalita yung actor, hindi sa baba nanggagaling yung boses but dun sa screen it self which makes you feel that the dialogue sound is really coming from the actor.. Problem with our center eh hindi natin pwede itaas dahil matatakpan naman yung screen. Thats why yung ibang PJ owners, yung center speaker nila is nasa likod ng screen tapos gitna vertically and horizontally at the back of the screen.. So as a solution, ang ginagawa ng iba is to tilt slighty upwards yung center speakers.. Kaya may mga center speaker stands dito na matitilt mo upwards yung stand...
Title: Re: speaker stands
Post by: Gino on Mar 09, 2014 at 08:07 PM
Psychoacoustics din will help. Kahit mababa ang speakers, the brain is tricked by what is sees and perceives as the sound source. So you can get away with it. It's effect is personal. See how it goes.

When you evaluate a system change, take time off after setup. Come back fresh and hopefully not too fully conscious of what you have done. This way, you don't pay attention to the center speaker but to the movie itself. See how that feels.

It's like a dead pixel. it was there but you weren't aware. When somebody points it out, you will always see it.

Thank you so much sir. If that's the case i should go for 31-36 inches? 31 inches ang measurement ng listening position ko. Sabi naman sa net pag dolby atmos soundbar daw mas better na mataas yung placement ng rears. Contemplating on getting a 31-36 inches, or 40? Thank you sir

Another rule is that yung max height ng speaker di lalagpas sa kalahati ng taas ceiling height mo.
I would make my rear speakers position the same height as my fronts speakers or 31" nothing more.
Ang pagkakaalam ko din iba ang recording/channel ng atmos so it has to be a different sets of speakers. Kaya in your case I will still maintain the 31".  Kung front presence speakers mo sya gagamitin those are preferred placed in a higher position.
