Highly appreciate if you share your thoughts as well or better if you also share the details of your Asian DVD!

Note: Filipino DVDs are also Asian DVDs however there are already a separate message boards for this therefore this thread would mostly dealt with our neighboring Asian Countries

You can only view the extended version of Shaolin Soccer if you select the white shoalin icon which appears on the right upper corner of the screen (3 times during the movie).

-The first extended scene is at 16'27 from the beggining (Sing/Chow Sing-Chi dance in front of the Mui/Vicki Zhao Store with other people like Michael Jackson in ''Thriller'' / running time : 3'14).

-The Second extended Scene is at 1H07'12 from the beggining (Sing introduces Mui to his friends & Mui fights with her Lady boss like Neo in ''Matrix'' without looking at her / running time 6'46).

Highly recommended to get NOW while it is still on stock. HKFLIX.com already pulled out their DVD for this as they were banned by Disney to sell this. The reason behind it was ther would an upcoming rated,US relase with the changed title of "Kun-Fu Soccer"

Nice one, xage! I'm also getting into Asian movie DVDs. I got few DVDs but it's not worth mentioning for some reasons. ;) I bought them all from Ebay. And I'm still in the process of asking some chinese friend if they could help me find DVD stores locally.
Anyway, I do like to have some of titles you mentioned above. But, I'm stuck with R1 code. Cannot play those R3 disc. Waaah!!!!  :(  I think, I'll just wait for them to release R0.

BTW, how much did you pay for "Shaolin Soccer"?

Still waiting for my Korean DVDs. Will share some infos later.

Keep 'em coming!

Yo, Xage!
Id like to say that Battle Royale rocks!!!
I got my copy from downtown and ive watched it two times na. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
I also have a DVd( although bootleg ) of the RING 2. From Tartan sya. Nakaka-takot talaga itong Ring series( theres Ring, Ring2 at Ring 0, if memory serves me right )
Meron ka ba nitong Ring series in DVD? Gusto kong kumpletuhin.
By the way, OK ba yung Shaolin Soccer? Theyre gonna show it in Star Mandarin( Destiny ) and it looks funny.
Ok nga pala itong thread mo about Asian DVDs. Keep on posting your collection, dude!

This thread is a great idea, xage! (http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/xyxthumbs.gif)  We need a balance between hollywood films and Asian films, the latter of which I personally feel, hits closer to home anyway.

SiCkBoY - you can also try rottentomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/) for film reviews. They link a lot of reviews, I just checked The Debut and it's there.

My Short Comment on the Film:

If you love Jackie Chan Films, then this is a must for your collection. As you may know this is the final collaboration of the three dragons: Sammo Hung,Yuen Biao and Jackie Chan where they also fought among each other (Nice Stunts and Martial Arts).

Not only that, you would also see an excellent fight sequence and rematch (Since Wheels on Meals) between Jackie Chan and Benny "The Jet" Uruquedez (The Redford-White look alike)

Good Luck Blade!

Since you'll be getting Asian DVDs and as I noticed you are a Blade fan. I suggest try checking out some of Donnie Yen's (the Asian guy in Blade II) DVD films like Once upon in China 2 where he fought against non-other than another asian sensation, Jet Li.

Title: Re:Asian DVDs
Post by: xage on May 07, 2002 at 10:02 AM
Yes, I suggest if you intend to buy, try getting the newly released double disc DVD with DTS sound and Unrated. The recent one (Which I have) is a single disc with DD 5.1 sound only but descent enought to be a jam packed DVD.

As far as the film itself, here are my few comments:

1. A great follow-up to Storm-Riders. Since this was also based on a popular comic in HK

2. The center of the film deals with Hero Hua (played by Ekin Cheng) and his adventure from China to US

3. Action Sequence is great especailly the Statue of Liberty final Confrontation (If you have played Metal Gear Solid 2 , I guess that game got the swordfight idea on this Film). Ninjas,Samurai,Fantasy and swordsplay all in here.

4. Special Effects, well it doesnt get any better if is not made by Centro Digital (The team that made the special effects in Shaolin Soccer and Storm Riders)

I hope this answer your inquiry.

just watched storm riders and audition. storm riders is a good action and fantasy martial arts movie updated with cgi technology. Audition, on the otherhand, like basic instinct and sixth sense, is at it's best, experienced without any pretense and prior knowledge. for a kid who grew up watching italian zombie, cannibal and gore films, this one left me squeamish. this is what hollywood should be doing with horror films. less gore but more on foreboding and development. don't miss it.

Yo, Xage!
I heard from a DVD supplier that a region 1 Shaolin Soccer might be released. Any mews kung totoo ito? Thanks.

So far, There is only one DVD released for Shaolin Soccer and that is distributed under "Universe" Video. The region coding for that is ALL

The reason why there are no upcoming Region 1 release for it is because Disney halted all transcaction(sales, trade and public viewing) in North American region due to its upcoming theatrical release sometime in early 2003 under the title Kung Fu Soccer

So if there is anyone selling it now better get it. Because if I am not mistaken this is the only copy which is uncut/DTS/widescreen.

How about a RING review( if youve got a copy na, that is )

Wala pa, since the DVD release is only in UK, PAL and region2.

If I obtaine one, I will immediately post my findings

thanks

The reason why I aqcuired this DVD is basaically because the film is a remake of Scorpio Nights. unfortunately upon viewing and aqcuiring it , all I can say is this Film/DVD id not recommended.

Title: Ratings Guide to HK released videos
Post by: xage on May 27, 2002 at 09:34 AM
Hi, I am posting a mini FAQ on HK ratings which I hope to be helpful in buying HK/Asian DVDs from HongKong.

When some Hong Kong/Asian Movie Fans try to take some video tapes from Hong Kong, they will find that there is a circle, square or triangle representing category I, II and III. However, what are these representations actually means?

Introduction of Categorization System

The division of categories was first introduced in the Film Censorship Ordinance in 1988. Under the Film Censorship Ordinance, all the movies have to be censored before these movies can be showing in Hong Kong. In addition, all the movies showing in Hong Kong will be divided into three categories -- Category I, Category II and Category III according to the natures, scenes and meanings or the movies.

The spirit of the categorization is to act as a label for us to understand the levels of the movies in dirty stuff and parents to choose for their children. The new system also provides a larger limit for movies showing in Hong Kong. Some movies cannot be showing in Hong Kong but now they can be showing as Category III movies. Movies showing before 1988 did not divide into categories.

The Ordinance was revised in 1995. The Ordinance remains the basics and the criteria for categorization. The only tiny change is to sub-divide Category II movies into Category II A and II B. The meanings of all Categories are as follows:

Category I -- Suitable for All Ages

Category I is represented by a symbol of a happy circle in black and a white vertical bar in the middle. The category means all movies in Category I are suitable for all ages. The main criteria is that Category I movies should not contain any stuff that involves violence, sex or impressions that are not healthy for children.

Due to the strict criteria of Category I, very few proportion of movies showing in Hong Kong as Category I and most audiences will consider Category I as a category without any excitement.

Examples for Category I:
Summer Snow (1995)
Umbrella Story, The (1995)
Lost and Found (1996)
Up for the Rising Sun (1997)
Ah Fai, the Dumb (1997).

Category II A -- Not Suitable for Children

Both Category II A and II B are represented by a Symbol of a less friendly square in black. Category II A will have "II A" character in white in the square. Under Category II A, the movie can contain scenes of violence and sex. However, these stuff should not be too heavy. Parental Guidance is expected for Category II A movies. This category is similar to "PG-13" in the States and "12" in UK.

Category II A is a category which is not concerned by the filmmakers since they only consider whether their films can be divided as Category I or Category II B since these are more critical to them.

Examples for Category II A:
First Strike (1996)
Forbidden City Cop (1996)
Log, The (1996)
Comrades, almost a Love Story (1996)
Once Upon a Time in China and America (1997)
Mad Phoenix (1997).

Category II B -- Not Suitable for Young Persons and Children

The symbol of Category II B is very similar to that of Category II A, except that "B" replaces the "A" character. As the same as Category II A, Cat. II B movies can contain scenes of violence and sex. In addition, they may be not suitable in nature due to reasons like political and foul languages. Parental Guidance is also expected for Category II B movies. This category is similar to "R" in the States and "15" in UK.

When compared with Category II B, the filmmakers will be more concerned at this category. Some movies like "Young and Dangerous" series would try their best to be divided as Category II B even if some of the scenes have to be cut. The reason is that Category II B is the last category that everyone can see. Movies classified as Category III will lose all audiences below 18. This is also the category with lots of arguments and appeals.

Examples for Category II B:
Somebody Up There Likes Me (1996)
Young and Dangerous (1996)
Storm Riders (1998)
Shaolin Soccer (2001)
Cairo/Pulse (2001)

Category III -- Aged 18 or Above

Category III is represented by a dangerous black triangle and with three vertical bars inside the triangle. Unlike Category I, II A and II B. Category III movies are restricted for audiences aged 18 or above only. Audiences may have to show the proof of their ages before they can get into the auditorium. Everyone can get access to Category II B movies even though it is labeled as "Not Suitable for Young Persons and Children". This category is similar to "NC-17" in the States.

Some of the reasons for a movie being classified as Category III are:

-The movie contains lots of violence.
-The movie has got some sex scenes which should be showed to adults only.
-The movie contains dialogues with foul languages or languages that involves the jargons of triad society.
-The movie contains stuff which is political sensitive.
-The movie is not suitable for immature persons in nature.

Examples for Category III:
If I Were Real (1988)
Naked Killer (1992)
Dr Lamb (1993)
Viva Erotica (1996)
Battle Royale (1999)

OAT II

We can see that Category III movies will have a narrower base for audiences. Most of movies classified as Category III are pornographic movies. Hence, some people may link Category III as a category for porns, though it is not the fact.

If Pornography material is concern, the rating use rather than the usual X/XX/XXX in HongKong they made use of OAT II

Jackie Chan as the Prisoner

Running time: 1Hr38min
Distributor: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
Country: Hong Kong
Region: 1
Rating: R (Violence)
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen (1.85:1)

Languages : English (Dolby Digital 5.1)
Subtitles : English, Spanish

Special Features:
- Audio Commentary by Phillip Ree - Martial Arts Expert
- Original Theatrical Trailer

Note:

I bought this DVD expecting a Jackie Chan Movie. Instead I bought a Jackie Chan Small Role Movie. Do not be fooled (like I do) with the title. One interesting thing upon watching it even though it was uncredited is the final action sequence. Which was filmed in the Phillipines.

And unique thing about it was Jackie was killed! Yes, he was to the orders of shoot to kill by no other than Suba Herrero. Not a must for JC collectors but fair enough.

*Jackie as the Prisoner was the North American Title release while its original title was Island on Fire.

Tartan have just re-release the superb 'Battle Royale' and this is teh news that should thrill our US readers in particular...

Tartan Video has taken the challenge of the latest home entertainment innovation and has produced its first DVD to utilise NTSC progressive scan technology, currently a unique feature of NTSC players, now available in the UK. Progressive scan technology substantially enhances picture quality and the viewing experience as a whole, but while it remains a feature of NTSC DVD players only, this added value cannot be offered by DVDs made in the PAL format. Further enhanced features available on this NTSC release are the new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and the newly created digital subtitles which Tartan Video was unable to access for its original PAL release.

Just last  May 27th it was released.

However some viewpoints were raised by DVD reviewers concerning this.

Over the past months  have been buying HK DVDS I have notice that the among the numbers of purchased DVD I made. The better set always comes from Universe Laser released DVDs.

Why:

1. Among other HK DVD producers, Universe laser is the consistent one in releasing new titles under DTS track
2. Most of their new DVDs are jampacked with Special Features
3. DVD keepcase is excellent since it houses to DVDs. If you to search for dual DVD case just buy  a Universe release DVD.
4. Subtitles can be clearly viewed/read.
5. Price is affordable

Filmography of Takeshi Kitano

My Note:

Excellent DTS soundtrack for a bulelt ballet style Japan drama/action film. Although no amount of extras to be seen, this DVD is highlighted by a great menu matching it with violent short scenes.

Around 10$ (including shipping) a sure bargain price for a such a good film (In my view). Recommended for "Beat" Takeshi fans and those who love Gangster films (I mean like Yakuza/Cholos[mexicans]/Blacks/Mafia)

For those who do not know "Beat" Takeshi - he is the terror teacher in the popular Japanese film "Battle Royale" and if you can still recall,  he is the bigboss/owner on the TV show "Takeshi's Castle" which was played locally by Smokey and Anjo.

The Fruit is Swelling 97'
(The Fruit is Ripe II)

Running time: 90 mins
Distributor: Mei Ah Video
Country: Hong Kong
Region: ALL
Rating: III

Screen: Letterboxed at a ratio of 1.85 to 1

Sound:
Cantonese (DD 2.0)
Mandarin (DD 2.0)

Special Features:

- Chapter Selection
- Subtitles:
   -Traditional Chinese
   -English
   -Japanese
   -Korean
-Bahasa (doesn't indicate whether its Indonesian or Malaysian)

My Short Note:

On the technical end: While viewing I never knew until I reached the chapter that there was a multiangle feature within it (A suprise easter egg!). Here is the details:

-  Choose Chapter #11, if you use the chapter menu
-  Or forward to Chapter #13, if you punch it in while watching the film (This is because the film starts at Chapter 3)
- The scene involves 4 selectable camera angle

On the movie review end: If you love Big (yes, the Tom Hanks Film) then you'll definitely love this one (ofcourse because of the the added sexy stuff)

Asian DVD's with english dialog

hi everybody,

I would like to start buying Asian DVD's such as Hongkong films, Malaysian, Thai etc, but I want them to have English dialogs, certainly not english sub-titles alone. Can you list down known asian DVD's with english dialogs? thanks.

Hey Xage,

Maybe you can recommend some "nice" Hsu Chi films to me. The ones where she actually starred and not just to support some action star. A category III rating will be much appreciated. he-he.

Most of her films (Which is in to DVD) are rated II the only one that I heard of as a Cat III was Sex & Zen II however the DVD released was only in PAL format .

*Add On - three more are posted two posts below

Anyway once recommendation is Shu Qi- True Woman but it is categorized as IIB but so far that was the closest I could find  :)

It is hard to find but one online seller has this in stock it is at www.dddhouse.com

Is Hsu Chi and Shu Qi the same? If it is, I own a movie entitled Iron Sister. Released by WideSight and it is Cat III. Don't ask me about the story. I haven't seen the entire movie. Only the Skin Scene! ;D ;D ;D

Yes they are the same. Her name was change around 97 as it conflict another HK personality in the entertainment field.

As for Iron Sister, thanks for bringing that one up. It was her film debut but not produced in Hong Kong but from taiwan.

Anyway here are the others (corrections from my recent previous post):

- Viva Erotica it is also a CAT III rating (Highly recommended film! - praised by HK Film reviewers and the cornerstone why Shu Qi was raised a bar level to superstar status)
- Fruit is Swelling (But she only played a cameo role) also a CAT II

finally catching up on some asian dvds i missed, cus they lowered the prices of the discs locally (usual summer sale).

just picked up the R3 versions of Battle Royale and Brother (Japanese flicks, both with DTS soundtracks, as previously reviewed by xage) and Barking Dogs Never Bite (korean film) at 3 for hk$ 95 (roughly 200 pesos/disc). most of the previous films xage reviewed are also priced the same.

the more popular ones i still don't have (Storm Riders, Fulltime Killer, Running out of Time) are a bit more expensive, around hk$50-60 (300-400 pesos).

kung may kilala kayong pupunta dito, magpabili na kayo :)

xage (or anybody else), any good suggestions for japanese/korean films? still on my list:

waterboys (japan)
il mare and my sassy girl (korean chick flicks)

you're right about the dts soundtrack. excellent dvd, more than makes up for my fiasco with the touch a few nights ago.

thanks for the suggestions! not too keen on the asian horror genre (with long haired women whose face you can't see coming out of mirrors, and ghosts hopping like kangaroos) although i'm willing to give the ring a try. i think i've seen VS but i'm not too sure. will let you know if i find it.

Shiri was a blockbuster hit in korea a couple of years back, and the dvd doesn't disappoint. DTS soundtrack gives it justice, along with the not-so-common plot twists. j.s.a. is also good, along the same lines as shiri.

will look into memento mori but it seems to be another horror/suspense flick. have you seen my wife is a gangster? the dvd's been out for some time. action comedy with awesome knife/fight sequences. korea's definitely pumping out some of the better movies recently.

ditto on beijing bicycle bently! story was fluid, and the shots of the narrow alleys and hutongs of suburban beijing can't be any more real.

weather's crap, so i skipped the usual friday nite-out and immersed myself in hk film's forte, brainless action flicks.

started off with china strike force
(http://www.dighkmovies.com/v1/63/Csfcover.jpg)

it doesn't disappoint, if you take it for what it is. aaron kwok's still too much of a pretty boy to be a credible action star for me, but some of the stunts are really good (bordering on yeah right, that's possible). noriko fujiwara is a definite hottie (with a nice striptease scene  :o) . the disc features dts tracks, but i've heard better. best watched in the original mandarin, as the cantonese soundtrack felt slightly off. and to add to the cool factor, coolio's in it.

double tap
(http://www.asiandvdguide.com/HongKong/thumbs3/udts5477f.jpg)

another no brainer with some good scenes, with leslie cheung as a baddie.

there's a dts version of this dvd, although i only saw the DD one. The DD track could use a little oomph, with some of the action sequences sounding a bit subdued. made good use of directional sound though, making me turn around every once in a while thinking i was being shot at  ;D

To ALL!!

Do not buy ICHI THE KILLER by Universe ( The region all HK DVD)

Why - 30mins were removed in comparison from its original theatrical release in Japan. From NC-17 it was dowgraded into PG-13

It maybe spoilers but pls take note of the brutal cuts done

Again not recommended for purchase

*The scene where the woman beater beats the prostitute and has sex with her is cut slightly.

*Long saying "It's as gross as ever. Who is this Ichi?" when he slips in the room where Anjo's dead body lays.

*The syndicate boss making an entrance when the Anjo Clan was in the room where their boss disappeared is missing (I can't find a good reason why they cut the scene except for time constraint).

*Suzuki's torture session (The shots of his hooked back are gone. After 1st insertion of needle, it cuts Kakihara slowly making twisting motions with the needle in cheek. The 2nd needle assertion is missing the shot of the needle slowly piercing through his mouth and the removal of the 2nd needle that is followed by pints of blood.

*The boiling water scalding Suzuki's back and face are completely gone. Kakihara threatening to pierce Suzuki's penis is missing as well.)

*The upclose shot of Kakihara cutting his tongue.

*The other four fingers which Kakihara breaks on the heroin dealer.

*The upclose shot of Inoue's severed face is gone.

*When Ichi cuts the woman beater in half, the scene of his guts falling out is gone, but you can still hear the sound effects of it.

*All three victims who pops a massive blood fountain blasts from the neck are cut by at least 7-8 seconds each (Each one you can only see for about half a second now, excluding Kaneko's).

*Jijii slapping sense into Ichi when Ichi declares that he wanted to rape Tachibana instead of save her.

*Exchange between Karen and Kakihara during the face pulling with a shot of the bar owner screaming is compeltely gone.

*The face slowly oozing down the wall is cut by 2 or 3 seconds.
Kakihara walking through the office of corpses and picking up some large intestines to show Kaneko.

*Kaneko's encounter with Ichi and the whole ramen noodle scene with the flashbacks is completely gone (Kaneko's character development is put to 0 in this version!)

*The infamous nipple cut torture scene is buhbye as well as some following shots (including Jiro slamming the razor on the table in fury).

*The exchange between Takayama and Kaneko outside the room during the torture session.

*Kaneko kicking Miyu Miyu to death.

*The shot of Long's pierced face is gone.

*Jiro's funny attempt to recreate Takayama's death on Long.

Urk!!!  :P

This movie (Ichi the Killer) sounds like a real gory and nasty one... Seems like it's even nastier than some of the HK flicks I've seen on LD before such as The Untold Story and the uncut version on Rikki-Oh...  :-\

Gotta admit, it sounds interesting though - could anybody give a few sites where I can find more info about the film?

Another thing - I heard that the Once Upon in China series is coming out on a DVD boxed set. Can anybody confirm this? Thanks!!

you are right there xage, about 21 minutes of footage have been removed for the region 1 version, included in the cut is the part of the storyline wherein the terrorist group were developing a new form of (anthrax  ???) virus.

I suggest watching The Audition first before seeing Ichi the killer.

As far as gore is concern,  Rikki-Oh is the the best far out blood and guts ....

Well, I guess the one I am searchin is not a bomb

Another one is Storm Riders.. HK blockbuster with Cool Effects (have two versions of it)

or darker style would be

VERSUS - A japanese action film that combines martial arts/gun fight/swordplay and cool zombies

Ichi the killer rocks !!!!  ;D Apparently takashi miike as a kid fantasized about gore etc. and breaking the boundaries of contemporary cinema. I liked audition for it many undelying tones about women and their place in asian society. But Ichi the killer is pure fun a totally different page. Sarap to watch with a totally new approach with the mtv style editing ala guy ritchie and the fast paced demented gangster type action that i totally learned to love. If you guys loved audition please check Miike's other movie that is also critically acclaimed named Visitor Q .  ;D

But the box is really nice. But I like ichi pa rin galing eh. Medyo you gotta have a dark side to you if you enjoy the humor etc. But never the less the quality was good.

But maybe you can help me out here pare. Sorry paltik don't read xage's response kasi medyo spoiler to ng kaunti  ;D  In the last scene ichi goes out finally to kill kakihara and kakihara ends up falling and you know the rest. Was it kaneko's son who killed kakihara ? As the the ending implied ? PArang I'm still guessing that was my conclusion dahil medyo kakihara was delirious na etc. cause the thing that gave it away was the blade scar that didn't show on his head when he finally reached ground. Pls. help me na lang if you've got your own conclusion or your own thoughts thanks !  ;D

THE EYE

* First review I made not using bulleted tech info but what I felt obtaining this DVD..

Synopsis

At the age of two Mann went blind. Eighteen years later, a new and risky corneal transplant operation restores her vision; but a series of inexplicable events lead her to believe there is more than meets the eye to her new-found gift of sight.

I. The Video

This is my first aquisition among my Asian DVD collection that was produced by Panorama Entertainment. The DVD's is presented in a widescreen format. Unfortunately the presentation showed some bad compression output that is very apparent during dark sequences. Nevertheless, it did not even worsen my viewing as the special efffects made by Centro Digital (HKs ILM version)was absolutely FLAWLESS

8/10

II. The Sound

The element that sent chills upon viewing this movie was its stunning achievement in sound and music. The Pang brothers have probably followed the chilling footsteps of japanese director Hideo Nakata whose music and sound presentation in his films (especially the EYE) plays a major factor in the term SCARE. Upon the films opening sequence, you will immediate feel that this would definetly be a scarey themed film

A very well and Two Thumbs Up job on Panorama Entertainment as it made an excellent DTS original audio track presentation ( A Must have for all owners who could play DTS sound). Unfortunately and I mean really unfortunate was for those who can't play DTS, viewers/listeners will have to rely only on a DD2.0 track since there's no 5.1 track available on the disc.

10/10

III. Special Features

The subtitles are of excellent quality no no typical wrong spelling nor wrong grammar visible and really help the chillin pace of this film.

And for the extra, well there's absolutely the basic chapter selection and three non HK trailers mainly, Blow (Us Film), Avalon (Polish/japan Film) and Nowhere to Hide (Korea Film)

Very average release, too bad because a movie of this quality should deserved a better treatment.

6/10

IV. My short note

Once I popped in my brand new copy of THE EYE DVD , Man was I so horrified by the fuzzy, glitchy, pixelated, stuttering mess ( the usual DVD rot prob ) that appeared on the screen (And take note I could not stop, eject nor forward it). As I was cursing,  it comes to my mind of having mail it back to my online distributor to exchange my defective disc and suddenly the image shattered like glass and a crystal clear picture showed a message written in Chinese (Somethin like Stop Piracy). Oh well an excellent JOKE !! *note this is just one shock factor brought by this DVD more upon viewing the film!

V. Overall Recommendation

Highly recommended for terror fans in the whole world (Hey, the DVD is region free so no worry)!! I never thought until I saw this film that HK (ofcourse with the intrend help of CENTRO Digital) truly add another definition of CG to Asian horror films and I mean not the cheesy thing but the sure scary thing...

Two Thumbs UP!! and a lot of Goosebumps

9/10

The One I posted in this thread, which is the MEGASTAR DVD release. Now Why?

1.)  The best picture transfer
2.)  Cheap
3.)  Better than its other Region counterparts (MEGASTAR's release was the unrated/uncut one)
4. ) A lot of info about the film
5. ) 5.1 Dolby Digital

just saw The Brother...and i was dissapointed :-\

the dvd video quality was excellent and the audio was the bomb! i had to turn down the subwoofer a bit, kasi it felt like they where shooting each other with canons instead of guns! :)

i really wanted to like this movie, but the ending sucks!
i think they kinda hurried the storyline in the beginning and got lost in the middle and did not know how to end the film. ::)

it would have been better if they showed in more detail, on how the group prospered rather than just showing how they massacered the big boss then they suddenly got filthy rich.

so this was just a rental for me! :-\

second time around

ok flick for cheung pak chi fans (hello flyderman), with pretty boy ekin cheng. the plot involves las vegas, gambling, and yes, time travel. ekin cheng plays a disgruntled dealer who tries his luck on the other side of the table in vegas while cheung pak chi plays an american detective (who sounds like she just got off the boat... forgive me, but it's her first movie i saw that required her to belt out english lines... apparently the few years she spent studying in oz didn't do much to improve her english. but yes, she's a hottie) who's investigating an accident ekin was involved in.

most of the locals blasted the movie, preferring twelve nights (cheung pak chi with eason chan) so it sat on my shelf for a good 2 months. finally got to see it last night and i'm not *that* disappointed. the concept of time travel and parallel worlds may have been lost with most of the viewers here, but it's not that hard to keep up with. acting was bland (what do you expect from ekin cheng), but there's enough plot twists to keep me happy (i am however, easy to please). it was filmed in vegas, but they probably didn't have enough budget to shoot in any major hotel or casino, as most of the vegas shots were outdoors or along the freeway to LA (i'm guessing the actual casino shots were just in a set).

the DVD includes a trailer, and previews of other movies (kelly chen's lavender and daniel wu's hit team). DTS soundtrack is present, but i hardly noticed the difference from the DD5.1 track. the subtitles however are some of the worst i've seen, even for a Mei Ah release. some sentences show only the second half, letting you wonder what they actually said, and the translation (from the little that i can understand) is very rough.

an entertaining flick still, if you can ignore some of its shortcomings.
Title: korean flicks
Post by: dazed on Sep 06, 2002 at 12:11 PM
i've seen mentions of attack the gas station, the isle, volcano high and some other korean movies, but i don't think they've been given enough notice. saw hi dharma a few days ago and it shows that they're definitely gaining momentum over hk.

another entry to korea's line of gangster comedies, the plot is predictable. gangsters get into trouble, hide out in a monastery, clash with the monks living there, but they end up bonding together in the end.

execution is another story though, and some scenes are downright hilarious. Park Sang-myun (also in my wife is a gangster) has perfected the slow, slightly chubby stereotype (which might lead to him being casted in mostly similar roles in the future). some parts of the plot aren't built up and given up for dead, and could've been omitted. still all in all, an enjoyable film.

the universe release has korean and cantonese dd5.1, although the cantonese dd5.1 sounds a bit louder compared to the korean track (don't mind me, i'm just a stickler for watching movies in the original language).

if you haven't seen them yet, other korean goodies include shiri, the 2000 blockbuster - action/spy thriller with some nice plot twists

and of course, my wife is a gangster which was also blasted by locals over there, but still kicks ass for me (i must have a thing for locally criticized flicks) - gangster comedy with awesome awesome fight scenes (the one in the rain can kick matrix's ass anytime)

If you are expecting the usual action fight scenes in J.S.A., there isn't any. It's more of an investigative drama rather than an action flick. J.S.A. focuses more on friendship, courage, politics and loyalty to your country.
Some of the recent films i've watched in terms of action sequences, personally i think My Wife's A Gangster is on top of my list. Other films include 2002, Public Enemy, China Strike Force, Musa and Volcano High School.

I will recommend to you 2 Korean movies that I have watched (though someone already mentioned these 2)

1. SHIRI (available now in R1), but the korean version has a Special 2-disc edition, comes w/ DTS.

2. JSA (Joint Security Area), not really an action movie. nice plot twist.

....

and there is a new DVD... action/comedy

WASABI (DTS) - japanese/french movie starring Jean Reno and Hiroko Hirosue.

Written and produced by Luc Besson, directed by Gerard Krawczyk (Taxi 2), it was filmed in Japan, and currently available only in R3 (japanese language w/ english subs) and R2 (french language and subs).

i think they showed it at the film festival, so you could also check out that thread over at film and tv talk.

it is the highest grossing film, to date, probably hyped up because of the director's own experiences (which was similar to an extent to the film). personally, i found the movie a bit dragging at times, and the other 2 characters (out of the 4 friends) not that well developed. maybe it's just me.

i liked my sassy girl, so go figure.

i've seen Shiri on dvd, but did not i like it that much... :-\

got to view The audition dvd (http://The audition dvd) last night...
and boy was i susprised to see it!

even though i'm not big at shock films, i must admit that
i kinda liked this film. :) i just had to pause several times during the last scenes and just tell myself that this are just special effects! i also had to lower down the volume since those sound effects also made me cringe.

there was also a directors commentary for the last scene only, but he did not talk to much about the film, or anything else for that matter ::)

this movie kinda reminds me of the movie Misery
with Cathy Bates and her sledge hammer, didn't she win a oscar award for this movie?

anyway...just like misery, the lead actor and the girl had very good chemistry on the screen. and i just wished that the ending went the other way.

just a warning this is not for the week of heart!
rent it at your own risk! :)

Hey people.

I have a P-Copy of Ichi the Killer here with me (bought in China last month), but I'm afraid to watch it because I'm afraid that it's the cut version I keep hearing so much about.  How do I know if it's the real thing or not (without reading the spoilers above)?

How about stating here the running time of the orig. version?  Or even the edited version?  Thanks!

Oh, by the way, where is the best place to buy Asian films here in Manila (without ordering online)?  And I mean, Japanese, Korean, HK, etc., not just HK vcds in Chinatown.  Oh, and any format is good, dvds or vcds.  Thanks again!

YESSSSSSS!!!!!  Rented it yesterday.  Superb sound, excellent video quality, GREAT story, MAGNIFICENT John Woo-like action.  Wonderful.  Just wonderful.  One of the best Asian films I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!).

The only negative thing I can say is that it was kind of long.  Some parts shoulda been edited.  Nonetheless, A MUST-SEE!!!

You're absoloutley right bury3. The box set is awesome. Unfortunately the supplimentary disc has no subtitles. Nevertheless for fans of asian dvds this is a "must buy". Not only this comes with a supplimentary disc. hubes: il mare's really nice, if you don't think too much about plot loopholes (these time warp things can get complicated sometimes). besides, jeon ji-hyun is real easy on the eyes (she had this hit before my sassy girl)

dbdbd: thanks for the heads up. now i wanna go back to hk just to get new discs. it's sad about asian dvds though, i mean, about those supplementary discs or additional features. they rarely have subtitles (and some of them can be really interesting, if only you could understand what they're saying).

recently saw my boss, my hero (usual gangster/jopok comedy, good for a few laughs, but i felt a bit bitin) and take care of my cat (felt like watching a reality-tv show, but i liked it)

My Life as Mcdull

Has anybody here seen this film yet?  With what I've read so far, I'm considering buying this title for my daughter.  Is the movie any good?  Would it be appropriate for kids under five years of age?

I would appreciate any feedback.  Anyone?  :)

A must buy for asian horror enthusiasts. Just got this from PARC. Three short scary stories from three young and promising directors from Hong Kong, Korea and Thailand. Packaged in a three disc boxed set. 1 dvd per director.  Just got to watch the short from Hong Kong, not as scary as The Ring, The Eye or Dark Waters. But very promising. Can't wait to watch the remaining two discs. Cover reminds me of the pictures from The Others. Spooky!!

Synopsis[/b]

When Kim Kyung-soo is thrown out from his eighth school for blasting a teacher with a super-energy filled piece of chalk (The beginning part of the movie), he promises his family to finally graduate and not get kicked out from school. However, the ninth school, Volcano High is his last resort. It's going to be a rough final year for Kyung-soo because Volcano High is a school that doesn't welcome newcomers. He will have to duck the leaders of the weightlifting team, kendo team, rugby team, judo team and of course, the school administration.

I. The Video

One word WOW to start!

Anyway the first disc which holds the film itself boasted its crisp ANAMORPHIC widescreen presentation. If it is MEGASTAR HK DVD got to say GET IT! they present the finest quality Asian DVD Video. A Flawless viewing satisfaction.

10/10

II. The Sound

With enough action packed in the film add it with a superb DTS korean soundtrack! Man.. It rock so hard that your neighbors will think they've just experienced an earthquake!

10/10

III. Special Features

Thats is why it was made as a double disc! The second is fully loaded with eye popping features! to be detailed here is the run down..

A. Synopsis
B. Film's Characters
C. 2 Volcano High Trailers
D. Volcano High Music Video
E. Deleted Scene
F. Story Board vs Final Version of the Film
G. Behind The Scenes
H. More Film Attractions
   - The Touch Asia Promo Tour (YES, with selectable subtitles)
   - The Touch
   - My Beautiful Girl Mari
   - Summer I Love You

So?? take ur time a lot are really in-stored!

10/10

IV. My short note

My question, Are you an ANIME fan? If so all the elements in watching an action fantasy anime is included in this Action Fantasy Korean flick. To Critics, nevermind the cheesy comedic showing just sit enjoy and have fun viewing it! The action sequences are out of this world. The closest comparison of such effects can come close to Shaolin Soccer with stunning CG effects mixed with gorgeous martial arts action and comedic approach.

The actual DVD comes with a carton slip cover and a double disc keep case.

Inserts are
1 HK Media Asia scratch raffle stub
4 Volcano High Trading Cards

I almost forgot.... Despite shown as Region3, the two DVDs were able to run in my Region1 Xbox Player!... Hooray!! could this be multi-region?

Excellent!

V. Overall Recommendation

Going straight to the bottomline: AQUIRE IT! The Whole Family will love it!

10/10

*Pls take note that the DVD I aquire was the HK Megastar Release

Anybody know where I can find Fist of Legend (Jet Li - Jing Wu Ing Xiong)?

I'm not talking about the R1 release by Dimensione (that one sucks), but a real Asian release that has the film in it's orignal Cantonese (and optional Mandarin) vocals and at least Chinese subtitles.

Thanks!!

None.. If ever you saw one its definitely a BOOTLEG (Pirated)!

Why?

1. The Ring was only released in DVD by Japan and Europe
2. Both release from the said countries are PAL and Not NTSC (which is our standard)
3. VCD wise, YES there are but its already out of stock.. when your lucky to obtain again its BOOTLEG(pirated)
4. Beware, normal BOOTLEG cover of the Ring has a TARTAN label on top.. bootleg yan but then again if ur curiosity is to view the film why not.. I rather suggest view it while its in limited release in Greenbelt and glorietta
5. Lastly.. There is NO NTSC Release!

this was directed by Hong Kong action master Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues, Time and Tide) and fight is choreograped by Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix)

Just saw The Phone (available from your friendly abu) - I've been a fan of Asian films from some time now, but buying an original HK copy - sometimes hurts my pocket since I'm only after the film - sometimes the special features are rendered useless since there are no subtitles. Although these pirates should not be tolerated - I give them a pat on the back for releasing Asian films - something that you can't buy at Astrovision or any local DVD store. That way, my horizons are opened up a bit.

Before you order something from your favorite asian online store, take note that these titles are already "out there"

Recommended:
Volcano High
My Sassy Girl
Wasabi

Semi-Recommended:
A Man Called Hero - some crappy effects
The Phone
Guns & Talks
Bangkok Dangerous (plays only on my PC DVD player)

DVD Buy:
Audition (But if you didn't take to Ichii you might find this not to your taste but this is an R1 DVD must)
Rashomon (The Criterion Collection is a must)
Ran (Wait for a Spec.Edition, which has been rumored)
Dark Water (bare-bones DVD plus it's made in HK so some of the subtitling is off but this is a satisfyingly spooky movie)

Korean Films:
Barking Dogs Never Bite (best Korean film I've seen. Wish there was a better DVD of it, though. Maybe you can pick up the Korean Edition. More expensive but possibly better)
Volcano High (If only so it's easy to go back to specific chapters. There's a lot of action scenes here you'd like to see again and VCDs are  a bitch to navigate)
Three (The third and best episode is available in a seperate DVD. if you don't mind having a DVD that's 2/3 so-so crap, get the full-length one. If not, get this. Has extras)

VCD:
JSA: Joint Security Area (A far, far better film than Volcano but not open to repeat viewings. have a DVD of this but I've played it only once. My DVD of Volcano has been fed into the machine quite a lot of times, though)
Wasabi (or better yet, just borrow it from someone or . . .you know. . .)
Shiri (Have a VCD of this. Am OK with that. Don't feel the need to get DVD but the Spec-Ed. is gorgeous)

Haven't seen it but will get Sorum on DVD.

The Ring (Trilogy) 1,2 & 0 are released only in R2 format (by Tartan). Should someone offer you a RING DVD which NTSC?? well frankly speaking there are NO NTSC release in the market yet

As far as THE EYE is concern... the only legit DVD release is the region ALL HK DVD made by Panorama entertainment

been moving around too much and haven't watched anything in a while, but the http://www.hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=10113&display_set=eng (http://www.hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=10113&display_set=eng) infernal affairs dvd got released already.

haven't seen much discussion of it, but that movie definitely rocked. there were no hotties (sammi cheng and urk, kelly chan were put there for the sake of having eye candy), but i enjoyed it a lot more than hero, and if it's any indication, it got picked up already by warner and brad pitt - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030203/film_nm/affair_1 (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030203/film_nm/affair_1)

just hope they don't do too much damage.

infernal affairs official site here: http://www.infernalaffairs.com (http://www.infernalaffairs.com)

i'm still waiting for my so close dvd. (they released the vcd already).

Hi dude!!

You're the guy who did the Jet Li homepage (http://www.netasia.net/users/sgc_wdi) right? That was a great page. Jet is one of my favorite Asian martial arts actor and I regularly visit your homepage for update regarding his movies. Keep up the great job!! ;D

Btw, do you by any chance know where to get copies of his older films such as OUATIC I, II and III, Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master and other? I've seen a shop here that offers the Jet Li collection containing 4 of his films (compiled by Dimension) but I don't really want to get those hack jobs. Any idea where I could find the orignal unedited ones? Thanks!!!

Hi himura,

yeah that's my site :) cool to know someone here who visits it regularly :)

anyway, for your questions, you meant DVDs of these movies right? For VCDs, you can always go to that Mei Ah store in Chinatown... they probably still have these in stock...but for DVDs, it'd be hard to look for those old films here... your best chance is the Dimension release, but of course, you'll have to live with the dubbing, editing, etc...

I went to HK last december, and I think I've seen Tai Chi Master, but no more Fist of Legend, I was actually looking for FOL as well, but couldn't find any... for the OUATIC series and Tai Chi Master, you can still get them online...

Ping Pong is a great movie, saw it on a Singapore airline flight. Ver y funny and entertaining.

Infernal Affairs is an excellent movie, it is well shot and the has high production values. Also it stars 2 of the biggest stars if not the biggest male stars in Asian cinema : Tony Leung and Andy Lau.

I bought one from eBay with the following specs:
BRAND NEW & SEALED
Official Released by Mei Ah Laser Disc Co Ltd.
JAPAN 1963
NTSC FORMAT
All zoned / Region 0 edition - may be played in ANY country!
Dolby Digital
Screen Format: Full Screen
Running Time: 142 minutes
Language: JAPANESE
Subtitles (removable): ENGLISH / Chinese (Traditional) / Chinese (Simplified)

I was quite disappointed when I viewed it as the subtitleing requires lots of hardwork for your brain as the English may have been literally translated.  Plus the names of the characters have been changed from the original to Chinese names.  (eg Jun became Chun)

Are these bootleg Discs?  The case did not come with a booklet or card.

Picture and sound quality are passable.  Its just the subtitleing that makes me want to return it.

I enjoyed Ping Pong immensely, which is more than i can say of Shaolin Soccer, i just don't like Stephen Chow anymore. I can't comment on how it compares to Shaolin soccer since i have not once finished viewing it only glimpses on Star.
Ping Pong is more of a Japanese stlye comedy like Waterboys.

Hey Xage,

Maybe you can recommend some "nice" Hsu Chi films to me. The ones where she actually starred and not just to support some action star. A category III rating will be much appreciated. he-he.

Recently, I aquired a Mei-Ah release of her most seductive role ever, Sex & Zen II.

The great thing about this DVD is that Mei-Ah did pretty well in its film transfer and even improved their product with its widescreen presentation.

Highly recommended fro hunters of Shu Qi's old roles in the HK's Category III circuit

Recent Mei Ah releases are actually quite good... most are in anamorphic transfer and dolby digital 5.1... they are also trying to add extras little by little, which is a good step from those previous releases that are in letterbox format and only has trailers

INFERNAL AFFAIRS

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0PwDdAgETFWHyL7NufqHGh5X13g5iDH*zEBuv!rA2naSBnDsAecxed4aZ60f7nwRKFe81LWQolfBPkWUkRwDYnLO0BRLykb9z/infernal.jpg?dc=4675416469077009597)

Synopsis[/b]

YAN (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) is an undercover cop in the triads, recruited before he graduated from the police academy. A decade of hard work has planted him deep in the largest triad in Hong Kong. MING (Andy Lau) is a mole in the police force, assigned by his triad boss to become a cop when he was barely eighteen. With the exclusive intelligence on his triad rivals, Ming has been promoted swiftly to head the Criminal Intelligence Bureau. Both men are feeling increasingly trapped in the inferno between good and evil: they are merely shadows with no identities.

I. The Video

Anyway the first disc which holds the film itself boasted its crisp ANAMORPHIC Widescreen (Definitely enhanced for 16x9 TVs)  presentation. If it is MEGASTAR HK DVD got to say GET IT! They present the finest quality Asian DVD Video. A Flawless viewing satisfaction.

My common statement now to MEGASTAR DVDs << Quote me on this..

10/10

II. The Sound

First of all dont expect roaring Gun Shots but be preapared with superb musical scores!

The DVD comes with four outstanding selectable Audio Tracks

1. Cantonese Dolby Digital 5.1
2. Cantonese DTS 5.1
3. Mandarin Dolby Digital 5.1
5. Commentary track by Cast & Crew in Dolby Digital 2.0

10/10

III. Special Features

As Usual, Megastar's 2nd DVD always packed with tons of features:

1. Movie's Story (Synopsis)
2. Confidential File (Film's Outakes & International Trailer)
3. Music Video (Cantonese & Mandarin Version)
4. Making of the film ( full 16min feature and 4 different presentation feature)
5. Trailers (TV Teaser & Full Movie Trailer)
6. Cast & Credits
7. Photo Gallery (Over 20 Posters, Lobby Stills & Others)

Unfortunately all behind the scenes related feature have no English subtitle so it fell shy to my perfect rating

9/10

IV. My short note

Whats great about this DVD is not only you enjoy completing the film but also have the opportunity to see the other ending which was only shown in Mainland China.

I would not dealt anymore on the film's plot. But I say the musical score did its excellent job in presenting the drama that unfolds..

V. Overall Recommendation

While it is fresh, Get It! And have enough ample time to see the film that would be remade in Hollywood.

Megastar did another A+ for this DVD and its a sure KEEPER!

10/10

Oh... I forgot, the EASTER EGG.. On the Second Disc, just choose the Infernal Affairs Title at left side and enjoy numerous Outtakes of the film

I just saw Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters on VCD rented from Video City. All I can say is: Blech.

-crude fight scenes
-crude CG
-lame looking villain
-there are times you can't make out what's happening during a fight
-mababaw na story

depressing for a Tsui Hark release coming from what he did on Time and Tide.

On A Man Called hero

Yes, I suggest if you intend to buy, try getting the newly released double disc DVD with DTS sound and Unrated. The recent one (Which I have) is a single disc with DD 5.1 sound only but descent enought to be a jam packed DVD.

I just found out that the said DTS, uncut DVD was only released in Korea. HK itself did not produced it and only sticked to the DD 5.1 edition

DVD produced by Media-Blasters and under their Tokyo Shock Line-Up

Under Region1

Synopsis

A failed former television reporter (the father of the family), tries to mount a documentary about brutality, bullying, and sex among youths (this idea comes to him after he is raped on camera, with his own microphone, by a gang of teen punks). He begins this documentary by interviewing his runaway prostitute daughter, but, in the process of his interview, ends up having sex with her. At home, his wife is regularly beaten by their son, so she turns to drugs to ease her pain. The son is bullied by kids at school, who shoot fireworks into is room at night and during the day beat him up every chance they get. Into their amazingly disfunctional home comes the strange mysterious “Visitor Q”. When the overwrought, delirious father inadvertently kills a young female tv executive he was trying to sell his idea, their lives spiral into even more bizarre territory... and somehow, the more depraved it gets, the more it unites them together.

I. The Video

Its full screen, standard format, as intended since it was shot on Digital Video

7/10

II. The Sound

Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, Japanese language with optional white English subtitles.

7/10

III. Special Features

1. Takashi Miike bio in moving text
2. Liner Notes
3. Trailers
   - Samurai Fiction
   - Freeze Me
   - Fudoh
   - Visitor Q
4. 12 chapter selection

7/10

IV. My short note

It should be noted that although unrated/uncut this edition does have minor optical blurring of pubic hair, which is common in Japanese exports.

It took me 2years to obtain probably the best copy so far of this classic Miike masterpiece. Bought it at a high price of $30 at Virgin Megastore but its all payed off once I saw it.. All I can.. SUPERB!

V. Overall Recommendation

This is a film definitely not for everyone. Don’t say you weren’t warned... An offensively interesting movie from one of the new wave of offbeat filmmakers.

Forget the technicalities as how I perceived and rated it, but check the content on how this film was presented

7/10 - Only for die hard Miike Collectors

Do anyone of you aquire this DVD box set?

THREE EXTREME?

Applause Picture's project Three proved so successful, the second project Three...Extremes once again teamed up creative talents from three different Asian countries. All three short films from these countries are linked by a single common theme: the ugliness of human nature, the horrors of what human obsession can lead to, and this evil in human is far more horrifying than any ghosts and demons that might walk the earth. Hong Kong's Dumplings, Korea's Cut and Japan's Box all deal with these themes that will send a fearful shiver down your spine.

First Extreme: Box
Japan's horror master Miike Takashi, who has directed obscure bloody and disturbing features such as Audition and Ichi The Killer helms Box, and stars popular Japanese actress Hasegawa Kyoko. In the story, Kyoko, the older of the twin sisters, suffers from recurring nightmares about an accident in the circus she worked in at the age of 10 that led to the death of her younger twin. This short does not contain the trademark bloodshed one expects from a Miike film, yet its depiction of jealous sisters trying to win the love of their father is genuinely disturbing. The ending is as unexpected as it is shocking!

Second Extreme: Dumplings
Hong Kong's premier quirky independent filmmaker Fruit Chan returns to the mainstream in this production yet never compromises his unique vision in this film. This is Miriam Yeung's first film in the horror genre, and she abandons her usual goofy persona to appear as a depressed, aging ex-starlet. This is also Bai Ling's first Hong Kong film, with a screenplay by famed local author Lillian Lee and cinematography by Christopher Doyle! This story discusses ex-starlet Ching Ching (Yeung), in hope to regain the love of her cheating husband (Tony Leung Kar-Fei), begins to visit Mei (Bai), who makes extremely rejuvenating dumplings from the most nutritious ingredient of all, unborn fetuses. The ending of this version differs from the extended feature length version...how is it different? Well, you'll have to be shocked yourself!

Third Extreme: Cut
Directed by Old Boy's Park Chan-wuk, it stars Korean star Lee Byung-Hun in a dark horror with a hint of outrageous comedy. Lee Byung-Hun stars a a famous director who is suddenly kidnapped one day, and is suddenly thrown into a completely helpless situation, with his wife's fingers heading into the blender....one by one...Park's stunning visual set-up and haunting soundscape pushes the horror to its ultimate extreme. It is an open challenge to the bravery of the audience. Can you endure it?

The Phil Troy LE is a good start but I hope they will continue to produce more unique LE that will make Phil as a standalone country that will gain popularity similar to Korea/Japan/HK.  ;)

OT: if this is true, then this spinoff shouldn't really be included in the boxset

Director named for “Death Note” spin off “L”

Hideo Nakata has been named as the director to helm "L," a spin off from the huge hit Japanese horror "Death Note," Nippon Television Network announced. Nakata, whose credits include "The Ring 2" and the upcoming "Kaidan" and "The Ring 3," will return to Japan after three years in Hollywood. Nakata said he wanted to make more movies in his home country and that he was taken with the performance of Kenichi Matsuyama in the "Death Note" films and wanted to work with the actor again.

Matsuyama plays the sweets-loving "genius" detective who matches wits and wills with a power-besotted college student able to kill anyone he pleases simply by writing the person's name in a mysterious notebook. "L" will focus on the detective's story before the events of the two "Death Note" pics, which grossed a total of ¥8 billion ($67 million) in Japan alone last year. The shoots will begin in August, and Warner Japan will release the movie in the first half of 2008.

Title: Re:Asian DVDs--ring?
Post by: akositonton on Apr 23, 2007 at 10:41 AM

DO NOT BE DECEIVED TO SPEND 1000P++

Hi.

Regarding this, I browsed a page that's basically a "How to..." on bootlegs.

Personally, I like the movie. Kaya I feel bad not buying the LE when it was cheap and still affordable. Good twist, a good directorial debut by Jay Chou.
