(returning you to your regular programming)

I passed by Astroplus Podium looking for Constantine, and I noticed they have a large display rack where most of the Warner 2-disc titles with slipcases are on sale for Php 350. Titles on sale include GoodFellas, Enter the Dragon, The Philadelphia Story, Wyatt Earp, My Fair Lady, THX 1138, The Shining, Rose Red, etc. On the same display shelf, a lot of the Warner single disc titles are also on sale at Php 299 per title.

Ingat lang kayo, the display shelf is rather poorly constructed - if you bump into it, you'll cause A LOT of the DVDs to fall!  ;D

Plus the leftmost shelves on the store have many of the Magnavision titles at 375 (single disc) and 650 (double disc).

Is this a sale, or have they dropped the prices for all these titles permanently already?

Just bought mine today. No slipcase and insert but still a lot better packaged than most DVDs today. By the way, may P350 sale sa Astro Glorietta ng ff: Warner titles na puro 2-discs

     The Unforgiven
      The Lost Boys
      Purple Rain
Around the World in 80 Days
      Wyatt Earp
      Enter the Dragon
Once Upon a Time in America
      Goodfellas
      The Shining

All of these are 2-discs and the sale is good for 6 months daw acording to the Warner lady. I got myself the Lost Boys 2-discs together with Constantine.

It maybe a Warner Sale. Astro Glorietta has this as noted by another pinoydvd member.

It's a sale-- but it'll be around for some time. Warner's trying to drive up interest in their SE titles. At those prices, who wouldn't be interested?

The P350 price tag is definitely hard to resist, especially since most of them have slipcases. The greater news is that the P350 price tag will last for several months so there's no real urgency. Sayang nga lang at hindi pa nasama iyong ibang 2-disc like Harry Potter which remains at P475 at hanggang bukas din lang ang sale. OK din iyong mga P299 single-disc titles like Eyes Wide Shut, Perfect Storm and Superman II.

Iwas muna ako...maraming pagkakagastusan...saka na ko bibili pag P200 nalang bawat isa (kelan p?) I'm sure there will be a special, ultimate, superduper edition will come.

From where this title available? Astro and other Store did not carry this title anymore...they said it's out of stock. I think this is a Walt Disney Movie and not from Warner.

I was pleasantly surprised they have the warner sale at video city last night and promptly got Goodfellas, and THX 1138 .  ;D According to a video city sales guy, their warner sale will last 6 mos.  But i'll be returning soon to get some other titles. These 2-disc sets are great values for the price.  I was just curious why the Astovision branch here in SM sucat still isn't on sale on their warner titles.

THX 1138 is a well reviwed film, possibly the best Lucas has made apart from the first Star Wars and American Graffiti.

was able to buy both titles,  i have only watch  once upon a time though.

review. I liked the movie. Its just like the godfather, though a little bit below its level.
runtime is for about 3hour 45minutes.  Some might find it dragging, But for me its
just fine. You can also say it a male movie.

hinahanap ko na nga ngayon ang once upon a time in the west.  ;D

from IMDB...

"Sergio Leone turned down an opportunity to direct The Godfather (1972) in order to make this film - a decision he would later regret."

I have both Enter The Dragon SE and Once Upon A Time IN America.  I have yet to watch Enter though.  OUTA  is a visual delight especially in widescreen TVs.  Excellent transfer though with a few film grains and artifacts. But the colors are just as rich and saturated as in the Godfather. Audio isn't a 5.1 showcase but the Ennio Moriconne music is well worth the P350 for me(more melodic and sentimental than the Godfather themes)  It has many flashbacks interspersed with the present time in the film but it's not confusing.  It is less an action film than a nostalgic trip to early 20th century american gangsterism.

If you like mafia films, this title is a must have, together with Goodfellas and the Godfather boxset.  Robert de Niro shines in all these films (except Godfather 1 and 3 where he isn't there.) I would say any of these tiltes would be a definitive screen presentation of the American Mafia.

OUTA was originally a 10-hour film paired down by Sergio Leone who  intended a two 3-hour segmented films. But he had to further cut it to 3 hours and 15mintues for the final theatrical run.  Expect a special director's cut DVD with restored cuts in the future.   ;D

I took a chance in buying Goodfellas 2-disc, considering Warner's recent R3 releases with missing features.

Sulit pala ang Goodfellas - kumpleto ang mga special features.

Unlike The Godfather, which went for an operatic style, Goodfellas is a realistic and brutally violent portrayal of life in organized crime.  The crimelibrary.com article "The Lufthansa Heist" helped me appreciate just how realistic the movie really was.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/gang/heist/1.html

This edition is a vast improvement over the old flipper.  The picture is now a remastered anamorphic, with higher color saturation, drastically reduced grain and excellent black levels.  For those familiar with the old release, the difference will be impressive.

The DD 5.1 audio seems to be the same as the old version, but it's adequate for a dialog-intensive movie's purposes.

The set comes in a double disc keepcase (the one with a hinged, swinging holder for the 1st disc) inside a cardboard slipcase.  It's not a digipak, pero OK naman dahil maganda ang keepcase - hindi buntis, at hindi rin kulubot.

Bought a copy of Goodfellas...and I must say, it does have a good transfer though the 5.1soundtrack lacked the oomph compared to today's movies (which really wasn't that important) Still hasn't lost its edge through the years. I still enjoyed it (so did my dad)...
Sulit for the P350 price tag. Might still get a couple of these.

Here's a very interesting article that will really make you want to patronize Warner Home Video (aside from the excellent price drops):

http://slate.msn.com/id/2114143/fr/rss/

WB on DVD
Warner Bros. is the new Criterion Collection. How the DVD label cleaned up its act (and its digital transfers).
By Fred Kaplan

People don't pay much attention to the name of the studio on a DVD. (Nobody I know says, for instance, "Let's go rent a Paramount movie tonight.") The single exception, of course, is the Criterion Collection, which has marketed itself as a boutique brand, touted—and deservedly so—for its classic catalog, fastidious transfers, and superb commentaries, booklets, and other "special features."

Now it's time to take note of another logo that almost guarantees high quality—Warner Home Video. At least since 2002, the video division of Warner Bros. has released one great-looking DVD after another. I know of no other label, in fact, whose output has been more consistently spectacular.

Last year, its two-disc DVD of Casablanca was a revelation—more luminous than any print probably since the film's 1941 première. More recently, its box sets of film noir and gangster movies (including The Asphalt Jungle; Murder, My Sweet; Out of the Past, White Heat; and The Public Enemy) have been marvels of clarity. Its restorations of Technicolor classics—Singin' in the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Band Wagon, and Gone With the Wind—are breathtakingly lush and detailed: Look at the texture of clothing, the ripples of a curtain, the glistening steel of a railroad car—they're practically 3D. I saw The Band Wagon in a restored 35mm print not long ago, at Film Forum in New York, and this DVD suffers hardly at all by comparison. Modern films as well, like Warner's new two-disc "special edition" of Scorsese's Goodfellas, are saturated with rich, natural colors. (If you disagree, you need to calibrate your television or buy a new one.)

Nearly a decade into the DVD era, most studios have figured out how to do at least decent digital mastering. Few major-label DVDs these days look bad. What puts Warner Home Video a notch or two (or three) above the rest? I talked with George Feltenstein, senior vice president for Warner's classic catalog, and Ned Price, VP for technical mastering, as well as a few outside industry specialists. Here's what I found out.

First, the condition of Warner's film library is in relatively good shape. As a result of media meltdowns and mergers over the past half-century, Warner Bros. owns not only all the films made under its own studio logo but also all RKO titles and all MGM films made before 1986. (For details, click here.) In the 1960s, long before film preservation became a popular cause, MGM was one of two Hollywood studios—the other was Disney—that decided to preserve all its films. They spent millions of dollars to repair, properly store, and in some cases meticulously restore original negatives, black-and-white nitrates, or duplicate copies. As for Warner Bros.' own black-and-white classics, original nitrates were long ago donated to the Library of Congress or UCLA, which stored them in temperature-controlled rooms and left them, ever since, untouched. To the extent possible, Warner DVDs have been mastered from the original negatives, preventing degradation in detail, sharpness, color, and contrast.

Then there's Warner's work with Technicolor. Even with careful preservation, color negatives fade over time. But Technicolor negatives can look as good as new after decades. This is because Technicolor films consisted of three black-and-white negatives, which ran simultaneously through a special camera. Light hit each film strip through a prism filter. Afterward, each film strip was coated with a dye, and the three strips were then aligned, on top of one another, to form a coherent color image. It was a complex, costly process, which lasted only from 1935-54. (For a succinct detailed elaboration, click here.) The point is that black-and-white negatives don't fade. If the Technicolor black-and-white negatives have been stored well, and if some lab can replicate the Technicolor dye-processing, it should be possible to create a fresh print with perfect color.

This is why the DVDs of Gone With the Wind, The Band Wagon, Meet Me in St. Louis, and so forth look so stunning. They've been mastered from the original Technicolor three-strip negatives. In some ways, these DVDs have finer color and detail than even the original film prints. In the old days, it was difficult to align those three strips perfectly. The task became still harder years later, when the films were reissued (or turned into earlier DVD transfers), because the negatives had stretched or shrunk over time. If you need all three strips to get the right color, and you can't line the strips up precisely, then the colors and the sharpness are going to be a bit off. However, with digital technology, the three strips can be aligned with absolute precision. This process isn't unique to Warner—other studios made Technicolor films, too—but Warners is the first to go back to the three-strip negatives and realign them precisely as a systematic policy.

Another thing that makes the recent batch of Warner DVDs look so good: high-speed digital scanning. When a film is turned into a DVD, the first step is to scan each frame digitally and to store the data on a hard drive. The more times a frame is scanned, the more coherent is the resulting picture. Many DVD studios now scan films at "high-definition"—or 1,080 lines. Warners is one of just a few that scan at 2,000 lines (or, in the parlance, "2K scanning"). Soon, beginning with a Wizard of Oz reissue later this year, it will start releasing Technicolor DVDs scanned at 4,000 lines ("4K scanning"). This is a significant number. Engineers estimate that if you digitally reproduced all the information on a frame of 35mm film, you'd need about 4,000 lines of data. In other words, at least theoretically (and for more on this caveat, click here), 4K scanning captures everything that's on a film.

Finally, the new Warner DVDs tend to come in the form of two-disc sets—one disc for the movie, a second disc for the special features. (Gone With the Wind has four discs: two for the movie, two for special features.) This isn't just a packaging gimmick. Digital video, like digital audio, consists of a series of 0's and 1's, run through complex compressors, processors, and converters. You can only fit so many 0's and 1's—so many bytes and bits—on an optical disc. The more you load the disc with special features, the less space you have for the movie—or, more to the point, the fewer bits you can devote to each frame of a movie. The higher number of bits that go into an image, the better the image looks. So, the best way to present the movie is to put nothing on the disc except the movie. (Columbia TriStar started this practice with its SuperBit DVDs. A few other studios, not just Warners, have picked up on the idea.) A Web site called dvdbeaver.com has measured that the latest multi-disc Gone With the Wind has 55 percent more bits per second than a single-disc DVD that Warner released a few years ago.

But the true measure—besides whether the movie is good—is how good the movie looks. You can see the difference in the new Warner DVDs, and it isn't subtle.

Yes, the R3 Interview with the Vampire now on sale is a bare bones release.

It's actually the old release - the only thing new about it is the cover art.

The menu screenshot on the back cover shows the menu screen for the R1 release, not the actual R3 menu screen.

The back cover says: "DUAL-LAYER FORMAT Layer transition may trigger a slight pause," but the disc is actually single-layer only, with a 3.95 GB content.

My advice:

If you really like the movie, get the R1 version (released Feb. 3, 2004, according to amazon.com) for an improved anamorphic picture with DD & DTS audio and special features.

Otherwise, a P-DVD copy should suffice, considering that a P-DVD should be a bit-perfect copy since the R3 is just a lousy single-layer disc anyway.

Thanks.

Etched on the inner edge of the disc's data side is a serial number for each layer.  1 serial number = 1 layer; 2 serial numbers = 2 layers.

The fool-proof method is by checking with a computer's DVD drive.

I'm actually surprised about one particular title in that article: I wonder why The Band Wagon is NOT included in the current Warner R3 sale, when I got mine at a less publicized Warner sale about a month ago, also for Php 350, anyway.

Weird.

I haven't played my Color Purple, but for me, to own the GoodFellas disc with a commentary track by the real Henry Hill is a landmark event no serious fan of mob films should ever pass up.

I liked the documentary special features, but I wish there were some deleted scenes/extended scenes, since... that's what I usually look for in any "Special Feature" section.

The features focuses mainly on the film... i  think your referring to the "Vamping Out" featurette where in it tackles on the make-up effects of the film. Nothing too significant.

I would really appreciate the "making-of" documentary if dianne weist, jason patric and jami gertz  where on it. alas, none of them participated on the documentary.

Can't we create a seperate thread on which DVDs to avoid?  This could help us out a lot.  I'm avoiding single-layer DVDs because they often have poor quality pictures and sounds.  I don't care much for packaging, I just want clear and sharp pictures.  How many members here got conned buying Spiderman when it clearly said "dual layer" on the label?

Avoid Interview with the Vampire and Spiderman for poor picture quality.  They're both single-layer DVD.
Avoid Riddick, it's single-layer and it's pan and scan ONLY.
Resident Evil Apocalypse is also single-layer DVD.  It doesn't contain any bonus material except for commentaries and previews.  It contain both pan and scan and widescreen format..... I wonder how they can fit both in one side?  hmmm?  The picture quality isn't all that great either.

If I'm not mistaken, the initial release of Interview with the Vampire on R1 was a DVD-10 flipper, with Fullscreen on one side and Widescreen on the other, and no features included. If the current R3 is single layer and only includes the widescreen version and no other features, I'm thinking the picture quality should be at par with the first R1 release?

Not too sure, though, since I bought the R1 re-release of this title which contained the retrospective documentary/commentary on a DVD-9.

Mr. Hankey is right: i have the original R3 release (in the cardboard snapper case). It is a DVD5 (Single Layer) disc which looks like the widescreen side of the R1 version released in 1997 (ancient history for DVDs).

The menu on the cover of the the new P299 version is different from the one i have.

They can fit both versions if they lower the video bitrate. In any case, I wouldn't buy it.

Re Interview, the R3 version uses the same widescreen transfer as the old R1 widescreen/fullscreen flipper. If you can wait, this title is due for an SE version soon. Hopefully next year.

Bought So Close at P299.  It was clearly stated in the DVD cover at the back Audio in English.  When I played it, the choices under audio were only Mandarin and Cantonese.  And the the supposed to be fullscreen seems to be zoomed in from the widescreen version.  During the starting credits, the titles and some letters are cutoff on the sides not to mention the uuugghh bad picture quality.  I lasted 5 minutes and just shut it off.   I was conned!  What a rip off! >:( >:( >:(

The problem here is, I bought the DVD two weeks ago and I dunno if I can replace it with another title..... :-\

The back of the box (Interview with the Vampire) says it's a dual-layer disc.  Isn't this false advertising?  I wonder if Astro will allow me to exchange this one for something else?

Why are they being cheap on us if they're trying to get us used to buying non-pirated dvds?  I could easily walk 10 minutes from where I'm living and pick up this same title for P70 for the same quality.  At least make it worthwhile for me to drive 30 minutes to the mall and pay 5 times the amount.  I haven't bought p*rated dvds for more than a year now, but man, if Resident Evil Apocalypse is where the future of dvd here is heading, we might as well go back to our favorite dvd p*rate joint.

If you guys are planning to go to the Podium Astro sale, you might want to change your mind.  I just came from there and was disappointed.  It's not a huge sale.  There's one rack that is marked P375.  The next rack is the P350.  Then the P299 stuff that we already saw on other Astro/Tower (Spiderman, Notebook, Badboys, Riddick, etc.).   Then the P199 crappy stuff.  Then the rest of the DVDs are in the P450 to P895 range.  Disney stuff still regular price.  James Bond DVDs are P350 except the Living Daylights which is P299.  Living Daylights is the newest Bond flick they have left.

If you're looking for the 2-disc Spiderman, there's one available in the far back corner.  It's P650.  They have 2 version of Legends of the Fall.  The newly released P299 single-sided disc and the P375 dual-sided disc.  You might also want to be careful with Terminator 3, there's the P299 single-sided disc and the P650 2-disc edition.

Not worth the trip unless you're in that area already.

Title: Once Upon a Time in America
Post by: Chet on Jul 17, 2005 at 08:06 PM

Expect a special director's cut DVD with restored cuts in the future.   ;D

Does this new version of Once Upon a Time in America split the movie/main feature between the 2 discs?

Yup, the movie is split between the 2 discs. Worth buying for the Moriconne score as av-phile mentioned. ;D

C'mon man for P350 this is a steal.  And oh yeah, I did use the split for a bathroom break only to learn that there was another intermission in Disc2. No regrets here. ;D

I personally prefer splitting a movie over 2 discs rather than fit it into one disc with compromised video bit rates.

Ah so it really is like Lawrence of Arabia where the theatrical showing had an actual intermission.  Yun nga lang hindi nila hinati yung content ng discs dun sa actual intermission

according to this IGN review (http://dvd.ign.com/articles/428/428117p1.html) of Once Upon A Time in America, the movie is split into two single-layer discs, but it could have easily fit into one dual-layer disc.

i can't confirm if this is the case for the region 3 release. i bought this title also, but i have not opened it yet.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA:

I've seen a 2-disc P-DVD (China) version, presumably copied from R1.  The Philippine R3 is a censored version.
Congratulations, Warner Philippines. You now have the dubious distinction of being the distributor that released the first and only censored DVD in the Philippine market.

At the R3 hearse scene (chap. 28 at 97 mins.):

1.  There's a delibrate frame error - the picture is framed higher to hide the woman's pubic region.
2.  The woman's boobs were censored with a Gaussian Blur filter.

To those who can compare the R3 and R1 versions, please confirm because I think there are other censored scenes.  Please tell us about the peeping tom scene and the rape in the car.

Ayoko na talaga ng R3.   Mas maganda pa siguro yung China P-DVD.  Mas sulit ang R1 kahit mas mahal.

Napansin ko, bumababa nga ang presyo ng dvd, pero bumabagsak naman ang quality.

When I started buying DVDs, there was no such thing as a DVD without an insert.  Ngayon, magkaroon lang ng insert ang binili mong dvd, tuwang-tuwa ka na!  ::) ::) ::)

Oh wow! You're RIGHT - I checked my R3 (which I bought at full Php 895 price!  >:() against my old VHS full-frame edition. The framing error I might excuse, since I'm not sure if the film was shot in open matte and just "opened up" at the top and bottom for full-frame video release, but the blur is something else.

What makes this especially weird is that the first breast exposure in the film, at 11 minutes into the film in the puppet theater, when the girl gets her nipples poked with a gun, is UNCUT on the same R3 DVD. What is this, selective censoring???

Maybe Warner can give us an official explanation for this very odd editing.

No, it's not an open matte frame.  The old VHS and Laserdisc editions were full screen versions cropped from the original widescreen.

It's rumored that OUATIA was originally intended as a TV miniseries, as indicated by the fact that Leone, who filmed all his other movies with a 2.35:1 ratio, shot OUATIA in 1.85:1 (1.75:1?), a more TV-friendly aspect ratio.

What makes this especially weird is that the first breast exposure in the film, at 11 minutes into the film in the puppet theater, when the girl gets her nipples poked with a gun, is UNCUT on the same R3 DVD. What is this, selective censoring???

Siguro dahil single breast exposure lang ang opening scene.  Some censorship rules prohibit full frontal nudity but allow single breast exposures because the latter is not considered a "full frontal".  Weird talaga ang censorship rules.

correction, my mistake:

Hindi pala higher frame dahil wala nang picture sa itaas. Zoom-in and cropped pala:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/comparisons/comparisons/e_g/eweia/Default.htm

I'm sure Warner pays extra to the retailer that allows Warner to display its special DVD sale racks.  If so, then I don't think a little sticker on each box saying "censored version" is too much to ask, unless the deception is intentional.

for box sets, only notable titles included are six feet under and the sopranos season 2 selling for 999. band of brothers for 2000. which i got for 1700 during the last sale at music one.

i bought myself angels of america for only 475 from its original price of 895.

As of last night, AstroVision and Video City shops in SM South Mall already have the additional Warner DVD titles with the "P350 Presyong Sulit" and "(orange) Added Selection" stickers such as Superman, Iron Giant, The Right Stuff, The Bodyguard, and some titles priced at P299. Also noticed that they placed gold "Imported DVD" stickers on the upper left portion of the DVD case.

Tower Records, Odyssey and Video City outlets in ATC have yet to display these additional titles. Their sales clerks don't seem to be aware of the additional titles.  ???

Just bought two title na tag 350, Unforgiven and Enter the Dragon.  Talaga bang parehong walang inserts yun titles na yun?

None of the 2-disc P350 warner titles I got, boxed or not, have inserts.

Yung THX 1138 Director's Cut I got had a one-page insert...the only one that has an insert sa sale I think.

As far as Warner is concerned, inserts are on the way out worldwide for regular and SE releases except for very specific editions. Even Columbia-Tristar seems to be headed in that direction with their transparent Scanova cases.

Yup, same cover but the blue borders are a bit wider on all sides. And yes, I'm almost sure there'll be a Superman anthology set next year. Makes good business sense for Warner.

Sir firewired,

Thanks for posting the keepcase cover and specs.
I'll start saving for the Superman anthology... ;D

People at Tower ATC are always clueless. Makes me wonder if they real know what they are selling. Or are they deliberately doing this.

Bought Superman SE, Iron Giant SE and The Bodyguard at Video City Mega.

However, the Superman SE skips with my Xenon player... but it seems to happen in the dvd menu and during the first few minutes of the movie only...  but when i tried it on my other player, it works just fine... could this be a problem of the disc?

it could be a number of things... your xenon might just need a professional cleaning. (a friend who owns a player of this brand said his unit started playing discs it refused to play before immediately after he had it cleaned at a local repair shop. they didn't even have to replace any parts.)... or a player incompatibility. (i know. i know ... it sucks, but it happens.  :-[)

It seems that if they knew what titles will be on sale, they get reserved right away by frequent patrons or the clerks themselves. That's my experience here at Astro in SM Sucat.   A few years back, I had the experience of going there first hour of the mall on the first day of the sale and voila, the titles I wanted have been reserved!!!.   ???

Sir firewired, I'm just wondering if there is any assurance or commitment from Warner that they'll still be importing TV box sets in the future even after all the price markdowns.  The only reason I'm hesitant to try out new titles such as Without a Trace or Nip/Tuck is the fear that succeeding seasons will not come in regularly after this massive sale.  Take the case of E.R.  I wouldn't mind collecting all of them but Season 3 is nowhere to be found locally.   :)

According to Amazon, Smallville Season 4 is set for release for September 13 in the US. OK sana packaging ng R1 and I would have prefered it, nakakatakot lang kasi shipping costs pag boxed sets. Anyway, I'm weighing things. Bahala na. Pag nainip sa local release, I'll see what I can do to acquire an R1 release.

I recently grabbed for myself these DVD titles from Warner during their markdown sale:

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace and Music
The reason I bought this DVD can be summed up in two words: Jimi Hendrix

The Right Stuff (2-disc Special Ed.)
I always wanted to see this classic film in its entirety. This is the story of America's space race, from the shattering of the sound barrier to the launch of America's first astronauts. I saw this for the first time when I was in high school.

Constantine
Just idolized Keanu... ;)

It seems Warner has a new markdown. Almost all single disc titles are now P299 (including Matrix, Swordfish, Shawshank Redemption, etc). The 2-disc titles including Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, Harry Potter DVDs, Las Samurai, etc) are now down to P475. The Band of Brothers tin case is now P1950. I thought it was just because of the Galleria sale, but I saw the same prices at Festival mall in Alabang.

So it seems this new pricing is nationwide? Firewired, please confirm.

I'll ask about West Wing S1 and Sopranos S1.

In the meantime, best buy for this sale seems to be the 2-disc East of Eden SE (James Dean in an Elia Kazan film) which inexplicably dropped from Php695 to Php299.

I also have one. bought last sunday night at festival mall. nagiisa na nga lang siya. Feeling ko super old stock na ito, kasi may kasama pang mga chinese import stickers from hong kong (era video).

And pingatapaltapal na ung mga nakaraang mga promo prices ng warner from 595 to buy one take one promo to 350 chrismas sale, back to 595, to 350 again and finally 299. Its a flipper, the special features are on side b.

I have HOFD HK version. Its 2 disk DTS-ES. The better to hear the whirling daggers surrounding you  ;D.

Last I saw it dropped to HK$90.

I collect DTS-ES titles kasi so for me, this is worth it.

Guys,

Got me several titles over the weekend and to my delight...HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS HAS A DTS MANDARIN SOUNDTRACK included (I dont know if its DTS 5.1 or DTS-ES 6.1 since I only have a 5.1 capable AVR) together with a dolby 5.1 version. Moreover, EMPIRE OF THE SUN has 2 discs included! My only regret was getting an EXORCIST:the beginning at 425(formerly 595) at PODIUM sale which is now 299! Still waiting for BAtman begins DE and Dominion ???

HOFD - dts and dd both mandarin soundtracks, NO ENGLISH dubbed
CTHD - first locally released version has dd 5.1 english, dd 5.1 mandarin(got one myself), superbit and latest versions dont have the english dubbed versions( reason why I opted to get the former).

Empire of the Sun - I dont know kung newer version ito, but I know it was previously a snapper.

look at the bright side, at least you got to enjoy them way ahead of many others.  :)  besides, you cant tell back then whether these titles will still be available when WB decided to put them on sale -- example, a lot of members are still looking for The Big Red One but i remembered seeing copies everywhere before the sale.  8)

Also, another bright side to think about, is that if you can shell out that much for a DVD and not keep waiting like crazy for a SALE like most of us, that means you "can afford" it (without breaking a sweat), unlike me.... :-[

If you're the type who buys DVD when they go on sale then your DVD collection will be a year or two behind everybody else.  Think of Constantine.  A lot of folks still think P499 is too expensive and hoping the price would drop to P350.  Hangang antay lang sila ngayon.  How long do you think before Batman Begins hit the P350 price range?  That's a long wait.  There's just some titles that are worth the initial price.

oh i meant that there's no assurance that the titles we want will still be available during a sale.  :)  i dont think WB will pull out any titles available on stock, they'll just have regular price tags on them (unless they're sold out).  you got good choice of titles though 8)

interesting bit i noticed -- they didn't remove the original price tags for the titles that are "temporarily" on sale like Troy, Last Samurai, East of Eden, Big Red One, Harry Potter...  so these will probably revert back to their old price when the sale ends.

Hey, nobody told me Empire of the Sun was double disc! I got this at Astro GHills last month(299) and was only able to discover this last night.

What a steal. John Malkovich and a young Christian Bale and of course Steven Spielberg.

I have the single DVD-9 Empire Of The Sun first released in a warner snapper.  The new packaging seems to contain the same features.  So maybe they just split it into two DVD-5 discs which I believe is more cost effective than a DVD-9, production wise.  At any rate, at 299 this is still a great value.

1ST DVD(movie disc) IS 7.2 GB(DVD-9) while the second disc (special features disc) is 2.1 GB(DVD-5).

Weird.  They could have fitted the two into a single dvd9 but decided to split the two.

Lucky me. :)

Same goes at Astroplus SM Makati. Anniversary sale of Warner is over i guess. 299 titles are back to regular price.

As for presyong sulit sale. It is still on.

definitely over.  :'(   too many titles, too little time and money!!!  i noticed the titles in snappers are not really back to their original regular price...  they're now mostly priced 475 compared to the previous 695.  i guess any Warner titles still priced at 299 are now officially mispriced.

Don't know if it is worth a post...but Warner had marked down selected titles to 275 today until supply last.  Most big name titles are NOT included.  And most of these titles were selling for 299 before this sale, so the difference is only @8%.  This seems to be a clearance sale, no new inventories, just what already on display before.   Not that I am complaining, Warner DVD prices had always been reasonable, so it is easy to see that they have little room to cut...

Among the better titles I saw are:

Before Sunrise/Sunset 275@
Jacky Chan's Who Am I
Jet Li's Romeo must die
Iron Giant (was 475 before)
Something Gotta Give
Sweet November
Captain Blood
Jacky Chan's First Strike

When I was at Mall of Asia last week Before Sunrise / Sunset was available as buy 2 for P500 in Astro. Not sure if it still is, though.

Nope, Warner is repricing its catalog. This is not a sale but a new retail price point.

I do understand that, that is why I started the post with 'not sure if this is worth a post...'

Sorry techdude, was referring to the Mall of Asia post regarding the opening sale. In your case, this is defintely worth a new topic because by bringing down their prices to Php275, Warner just lowered the price-point for imported R3 catalog releases.

by bringing down their prices to Php275, Warner just lowered the price-point for imported R3 catalog releases.

Now if only the others will follow suit soon.
Viva hass been very good with their P299 sale prices but they have not permanently lowered the prices of the back catalogue.
It's down this month and then up again the next.

Magna's back catalouge has been steady at P375.
I'm hoping it will go down to P250-299 but then that's crossing over into their DVD5 disc prices range (which i think are not even worth P150).

So before sinrise/sunset is a boxset? and it's only 275??  ???

As sardaukar has stated, the new price point of the Before Sunrise-Sunset boxed set is 500 yata.  It was out of stock at the podium but available as separate items for 275 each.

Thanks for answering brod.

Sorry if I was unclear. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are sold separately, not a boxed set. They were (or are) part of a number of other DVDs that were marked "Buy 2 for P500".
