There are some changes at the last minute because of MTRCB rating. The idiots at the MTRCB are very slow in rating the movies. Its definite that the venue will not be in Makati anymore.
I hope Sm Megamall will be the venue. :)

I'm keen on Kekexili ,Moolaade, Bittersweet Life , the Yonfan films and that Loach/Ommi/Kiarostami omnibus.
And it'll be great to re-watch Steamboy and see Ghost in the Shell 2 on the big screen?

Yup, Kekexili is terrific... my Top 1 film from last year... i'd love to see it in the big screen.
I'm a big fan of Kim Ji-woon so I'll give Bittersweet Life a watch too. I'll watch the von Trier too, although I haven't had time to see Dogville yet. Heck, if I can, i'll watch everything.

Hehe,yeah. When Cinemanila came around when I was still working in makati, i made all sorts of lamebrained excuses to get out of the office and watch. Now that I'm jobless, I have no excuse not to miss it. I smell a marathon. ;D

I would if I could, but I probably can't... I'd have to cut classes left and right to be able to watch everything... I just hope the good films won't coincide with my uncuttable classes.

Cinemanila to bring "Decalogue" into the big screen
The 7th Cinemanila International Film Festival will pay tribute to the late great Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski by screening "Decalogue," his award-winning collection of ten short films that explores the timeless social and moral issues of human existence.
Cinemanila festival director Amable "Tikoy" Aguiluz VI revealed that he has finalized plans to show the 35mm print of Kieslowski's ten-part made-for-television series loosely based on the Ten Commandments. "Decalogue" is widely considered as Kieslowski's "transition film," as it is necessary to watch it to appreciate the acclaimed filmmaker better. All the scenes in the film were reportedly shot in one take due to lack of budget.
Kieslowski began shooting political documentaries before he directed TV features and films depicting the conditions of Poles under socialism. He was a prominent member of the "Cinema of Moral Anxiety," a Polish film group known for challenging the limits of socialist film censorship.
"Decalogue" is another product of Kieslowski's longtime writing collaboration with lawyer Krzysztof Piesiewicz, which started with "No End" in 1984. Due to financial problems in Poland, Kieslowski and Piesiewicz sought the support of the French in producing "The Double Life of Veronique" (1992) and the well-known Three Colors trilogy (representing the colors of the French flag): "Blue" (1993, liberty), which shared the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival; "White" (1994, equality), which won the best director prize at the Berlin International Film Festival; and "Red" (1994, fraternity), which was nominated for an Academy Award for best director in 1995.
"Decalogue" won the Best Foreign Language Film Award from the Chicago Film Critics Association in 1997, the prestigious FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Award at the 1989 Venice Film Festival, and the Best Foreign Television Program by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Two episodes were even expanded to full-length features released internationally under the titles "A Short Film About Killing" and "A Short Film About Love."
Kieslowski was supposed to helm another trilogy, "Heaven," "Hell," and "Purgatory," but he succumbed to cardiac surgery at the age of 54 in 1996. German filmmaker Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") completed "Heaven" in his place in 2002 with Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi in starring roles. The film opened the 4th Cinemanila.

Gosh, 7th Cinemanila International Film Festival na... how time flies!
I can still remember those sleepless nights and the seemingly endless "tuliro" days when we were preparing the 1st Cinemanila International Film Festival (1999). ;) That was the time of Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful and Fernanda Montenegro's Central Station. :)

Is Cinemanila from Aug 4-17 (as thread title says) or from Aug 9-24 (as per Jul 27 post of sir edsa77)? The website still does not say & no exact venues or schedule information is provided. ??? I'm looking forward to this year's fest as it will screen in cinemas more accessible to me than Makati. :)

Each of the stories presented is linked to the theme of the next commandment. Because of it’s form, all viewers are deeply moved by this film, regardless of their world view or religious beliefs. Asked on numerous occasion why he chose such a subject, the director replied curtly, “It’s worthwhile to be reminded of these ten very well written sentences. There needs to be a point of reference, some definitive criterion…”.
“Decalogue” has been listed as a film of the highest moral values and recommended by the Vatican. It has also won numerous awards at film festivals including:

Decalogue 1 (Dekalog 1)
“I am the Lord they God; thou shall have no other gods before me.”
Krzysztof introduces his small son, Paweł, to the mysteriesof the personal computer, a machine which he believes is infallible. It is winter. Paweł, anxious to try out his new pair of skates, asks his father if he can go out to the local pond which has just frozen over. They consult the computer; the ice will hold the boy’s weight; he can go. Paweł doesn’t come home. There was a freak local thaw; the computer was wrong; Paweł drowned. Krzysztof runs to the church in protest and despair, falls against an altar. Candle wax splashes over the face of the black Madonna and dries on her cheeks as tears.
Decalogue 2 (Dekalog 2)
“Thou shall not take the name of the Lord they God in vain.”
Dorota visits Andrzej, her dying husband, in the hospital. She is pregnant – this might be the last chance for her to have a baby – but not by him. She asks the Consultant in charge of her husband’s case whether Andrzej will die. If he lives, she will have an abortion; if he dies, she can have the child. How can the doctor decide the life or death of an unborn child? How can he be certain whether his patient will die or miraculously recover? He tells Dorota that her husband doesn’t have a chance, but Andrzej recovers. Dorota tells Andrzej that they are going to have a baby, he thinks it’s his.
Decalogue 3 (Dekalog 3)
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Christmas Eve, a night when families are together and nobody wants to be alone. Ewa tricks Janusz, her ex-lover, away from his family and under various pretexts tries to keep him with her for the night.
Janusz wants to go home but Ewa is determined. They part at dawn.
Decalogue 4 (Dekalog 4)
“Honor the father and the mother.”
Anka is 20 years old. Her mother is dead and she lives with Michał, her father. They get on well together. Michał has to go on a trip abroad. While he is away, Anka finds an envelope in her father’s room: ‘Not to be opened before my death.’ Within that envelope is another, addressed, in her mother handwriting, to her. Anka meets her father on his return and quotes the letter where her mother reveals that Michał is not Anka’s real father. A different relationship emerges between Anka and Michał as Anka subtly tries to seduce him. Michał resists, she might still be his daughter. As Michał leaves for another trip, Anka runs after him, confessing that she hasn’t read the letter after all.
Decalogue 5 (Dekalog 5)
“Thou shall not kill.”
A youth, randomly and brutally, murders a taxi-driver. Piotr has just pass his law exams and been admitted to the bar. He is to defend Jacek, the young murderer. There is no evidence for the defense, and no apparent motive. Jacek is put on trial, found guilty and executed by hanging. Piotr, after his first case, is left with the bitter doubt – does the legal system, in the name of the people, have the right to kill in cold blood?
Decalogue 6 (Dekalog 6)
“They shall not commit adultery”
Tomek, a young post office worker, is obsessed with Magda, the promiscuous woman who lives in the tower block opposite. He spies on her through a telescope and finally declares his love. She initiates him into the basic fact of life – there is no love, only sex. Tomek, shattered, tries to commit suicide but doesn’t succeed. When he returns from the hospital, it is Magda who becomes obsessed with him.
Decalogue 7 (Dekalog 7)
“Thou shall not steal”
Six-years old Ania is being brought up by Ewa in the belief that Majka, Ewa’s daughter, is her sister, whereas Majka is really her mother. Tired of living this lie and desperate to have Ania love her as a mother, Majka ‘kidnaps’ Ania and runs away from her parents. She seeks refuge with Wojtek, Ania’s father. Majka was just a schoolgirl when Wojtek, her teacher, got her pregnant. Ewa, jealous of Ania’s love, looks for her everywhere, phones Wojtek. Majka seizes her little girl and continues to run; she will only return home if her mother allows her to bring up her own daughter in the recognition of the true relationship. Majka and Ania hide at a nearby station. Ewa asks the woman at the ticket office whether she has seen a young woman with a little girl. The ticket woman lies-yes, she did see them but they left some two hours ago. In the background, Ania wakes up and sees Ewa. ‘Mommy,’ she calls and runs to her. A train arrives, Majka jumps on, rejecting Ewa’s pleas for her to come home.
Decalogue 8 (Dekalog 8)
“They shall not bear false witness against they neighbor”
Elżbieta, researching the fate of Jewish war survivors, is visiting from New York and sits in on lectures in ethics at the University of Warsaw. She approaches Zofia, the professor, and tells her that she is the little Jewish girl whom Zofia refused to shelter from the Nazis during the Occupation. As Zofia explains the reason for this is apparent cowardice-someone had betrayed Zofia’s husband who was active in the underground and any Jewish child would have fallen into the hands of the Gestapo-her long-standing sense of guilt is cleared while Elżbieta’s faith in humanity is restored.
Decalogue 9 (Dekalog 9)
“Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s house”
Roman learns he is impotent. Recognizing his wife, Hankas’, sexual needs, he encourages her to take a lover. She is reluctant; she loves Roman, but does have an affair with Mariusz, a student. Roman, despite his own words, becomes excessively jealous and obsessed with the thought that Hanka might have followed his encouragement and taken a lover. He spies on her and learns of her relationship with Mariusz, unaware of the fact that Hanka has broken off the affair. Roman tries to commit suicide but survives. Hanka rushes to his side.
Decalogue 10 (Dekalog 10)
„They shall not covet they neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maid, nor his goods, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
A man dies leaving an extremely valuable stamp collection to his two sons, Jerzy and Artur. Although they know very little about stamps, they are unwilling to sell. They learn that one very rare stamp is needed to complete the valuable set. To acquire the stamp Jerzy donates his kidney – the man in possession of the stamp is in need of a kidney for his daughter. Returning from hospital, Jerzy and Artur find that they suspected each other and are reconciled.
Krzysztof Kieslowski started his career shooting documentaries and later became associated with the “cinema of moral anxiety, “ which grouped several Polish directors, including ‘Andrzej Wajda’, and aimed to depict the conditions of Poles under communism. His best known work was the three colors series “Red”, “White, “ and “Blue”. “Red” brought him an Academy Award nomination for best director in 1995, “Blue” shared the Golden Lion at Venice in 1993, and “White” earned Mr. Kieslowski the best director prize in Berlin, 1994.

CITY OF MANILA TO HOST CINEMANILA 2005
Over 3 million pesos in cash to be given away
Manila Mayor Lito Atienza welcomes the prestigious Cinemanila
International Film Festival and calls the festival his "newest baby."
At the recent Executive Meeting held August 19 at the Mayor's Office,
the Mayor encouraged all those present to focus on `one effort, one
projection and one festival.' The Mayor stressed that "we must make
the Cinemanila International Film Festival an exciting event through
the combination of our efforts. This is in line with our aim of
helping the local film industry."
Adhering to the Mayor's aim, this year's celebration of Cinema will
have the theme, "Buhayin ang Pelikulang Pilipino." Official festival
dates are from October 12 to 25. According to festival director Tikoy
Aguiluz, what sets the 7th Cinemanila from the previous ones is that
this year's celebration will have a stronger local counterpart. The
festival still follows its objectives of promoting Filipino films to
world cinema audiences and of developing new and independent
filmmakers. In keeping in line with the Mayor's aim, Cinemanila
continues its tradition of showing films both Filipino and foreign
that can eventually make significant impact abroad. For this year,
local productions would be given more encouragement and focus.
To aide in the preparation for the festival, the Mayor issued
Executive order no. 07 creating the Executive Committee for the
Cinemanila International Film Festival 2005. The Executive Order also
establishes the festival functions, guidelines and criteria. The
Mayor will serve as the chairman. Assisting him in his duties are
Hon. Kim Atienza, Atty. Emmanuel Sison and Mr, Gaudencio Nable.
Another addition to this year's celebration is the added focus on the
digital film component of the festival. CCP Vice President and
Artistic Director Mr. Nanding Josef welcomed the notion as he
states, "The people are already craving for intelligent and non-
commercial films. This just indicates that they can already
appreciate the international flavor."
The grand prize winner in the Digital Film Competition will receive
1.5 million pesos while the second prize winner will be awarded 1
million pesos. The third prize winner will bring home 750,000 pesos.
The directors of the remaining seven entries will each receive
100,000 pesos.
The recent developments in Cinemanila were positively received also
by the other members of the executive meeting. Members of the
executive committee which were present included Cinemanila founding
director Tikoy Aguiluz, Prof. Gigi Alfonso of UP Diliman, Mr. Ric
Camaligan of SM Prime Holdings, Mr. Wilson Tieng of MPDAP/Solar Films
and Ms. Christine Dayrit of the Philippine Star.

FILM COMPETITION

To be eligible for participation, the film must be produced after
January 2004 and must fulfill the following conditions: it must be in
digital format either DV, HD, 24P or HDV; the film must be directed
by a Filipino citizen; it must not have been exhibited commercially,
locally or internationally and any screening that involves ticket
selling; it must not have been exhibited as an entry in prior local
festivals; the film should at least be 80 minutes or up to a maximum
of 130 minutes in length including credits; the film may be in
Filipino or any regional dialects with English subtitles. The
festival is open to digital full-feature films.
The deadline for submission of entries will be on September 16, 2005.
All entries must use the official standard entry forms provided by
the Cinemanila Secretariat.
