Title: Back to the Future disc details
Post by: dobler on May 13, 2002 at 04:27 PM
Finally!  ;D

http://www.bttf.com/backtalk/20020510.shtml

A spokesperson for Universal Pictures International Video in London has provided us with the official list of bonus features on the upcoming international release of the Back to the Future Trilogy boxed set.  While specific release dates and countries have not yet been finalized as of this writing, I'm told that the boxed set will be released internationally beginning in September of this year.

Confirming rumors we've heard elsewhere, all territories will release the set on DVD with the three discs, with most releasing the first film also as a separate DVD. The two sequels will not be released separately at this time.  Each territory is free to decide whether or not to also release the films on VHS, so those chosing to do so may release each film individually on video.
The following is the official text which will appear on the back of the boxed set:

Presented by filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg, directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis, and starring time-travelers Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the phenomenally popular Back To The Future films are back for the first time ever on DVD! Digitally re-remastered and packed with additional footage and features, you'll be able to relive the adventure time and time again. OVER 10 HOURS OF BONUS FEATURES!
The following are the official contents of each disc contained in the boxed set:

Disc 1

Back To The Future movie
The Original Making Of featurette - a rare BEHIND THE SCENES look.
A Look Back to the Future: a retrospective look featuring cast and crew
ALL NEW AUDIO COMMENTARY with Michael J.Fox, Director/Writer Robert Zemeckis & Producer/Writer Bob Gale.
Hilarious OUTTAKES.
DELETED SCENES.
Original MAKE-UP TESTS.
HOVER BOARD TEST on location.
Did you know that? Universal's animated anecdotes: watch the movie and learn more interesting facts
PRODUCTION ARCHIVES - photographs, original storyboards & props.
Huey Lewis & The News music video POWER OF LOVE.

Disc 2

Back To The Future II movie
The Original Making Of featurette - a rare BEHIND THE SCENES look.
A look Back to the Future: a retrospective look featuring cast and crew
Hilarious OUTTAKES.
DELETED SCENES.
PRODUCTION ARCHIVES - photographs, original storyboards & props.

Disc 3

Back To The Future III movie
A look Back to the Future: a retrospective look featuring cast and crew
Hilarious OUTTAKES.
DELETED SCENES.
PRODUCTION ARCHIVES - photographs, original storyboards & props.
ZZ Top music video DOUBLEBACK

There you have it this is the official list of bonus features as provided to us straight from Universal for the international worldwide release.  At press time, the official artwork wasn't finished yet, but we do expect to receive it soon along with the official press release and release dates for each region.  While we do not yet have the official specs for the U.S. release, we do expect some changes to this list — particularly on the sequels, which are expected to be released individually as well as part of the boxed set.

It seems R4 will be the first to have BTTF. Some R4 online shops already have it for preorder. From michaeldvd (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/):

Back To The Future Trilogy - by Michael D
Those that deciphered the Swami's recent cryptic message will know this already, but we can now officially confirm that Back To The Future will be released as a trilogy box set on 21st August 2002 in Australia. That makes us the first territory in the world to get the Box Set, with the rest of the world following in September - it'll make a nice Father's Day present (that's why we're getting it a little early). Pricing will be around the $60 mark, which is going to guarantee mega-sales of this 3-disc set. Features are still not quite set in stone, although the list on www.bttf.com is likely to be pretty much spot-on.

Update from dvdfile:

"... But although Universal has all but confirmed that a Region 1 release will come by the end of the year (check out Universal's DVD website (http://www.bttfmovie.com/index_hi.html) for a look at the preview trailer), it's worth noting that the specs announced for the overseas versions of the trilogy will not be the same as the eventual Region 1 release. We've received some news from Back to the Future producer Bob Gale himself that production is still underway for some of the features, and director Robert Zemeckis recently held a Q&A session at his alma mater, the USC School of Cinema-Television, that was recorded for the Region 1 DVD. So, be warned. Those who just can't wait and are thinking of ordering the overseas editions of the trilogy, you may want to hold off until the official announcement comes for the domestic release. There just may be a few surprises in there...?

from DVDReview:

" The trilogy is arriving. Seventeen years after the film's release, the Back to the Future trilogy is coming to DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Now a great list of features has been announced for these titles, but peppered with some news that may be fine with some and unpleasant for others.
The year is 1985 — but not for long. Because teenager Marty McFly is about to be blasted back to 1955 aboard the plutonium-powered DeLorean created by eccentric genius Doc Brown. But when Marty accidentally keeps his parents-to-be from falling in love, it triggers a time-shattering chain reaction that could vaporize his future -- and leave him trapped in the past! Now Marty's last hope is to change history before the clock runs out on his only chance to get himself "Back to the Future." Marty and Doc then return to the future and then the far past in one of history's rare trilogies that remains wonderful throughout.
After the precedent set by E.T., Universal seems to be embracing some concerning new trends, namely packaging large collectors packs without offering films individually, and relying too much on their online partner Total Axess. That trend continues with the Back to the Future releases as the entire trilogy will be available together in some unique new packaging, but not available individually. Although many fans of the series will be picking up the trilogy anyway, this won't cause them much concern, but more casual fans may not want to spend the extra money for three films. The discs themselves will be filled with wonderful features. Two versions of the set will be made available. One set will contain the films in anamorphic widescreen, the second set in fullscreen. All other features will be the same starting with audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 sound. The extras will include an audio commentary with actor Michael J. Fox, director Robert Zemeckis and producer Bob Gale, outtakes from all three films, deleted scenes (no mention either way on the controversial Eric Stoltz footage), hoverboard tests, the featurette "The Making of Back to the Future", fun facts placed throughout the films, a photo gallery, the Huey Lewis music video, a teaser and original theatrical trailers. Universal has also decided again to make several interviews, clips and other materials to be available exclusively through the Total Axess web site and not on the DVD itself.
Scheduled to appear in a flash of light on December 17th, the trilogy will be priced at $39.95."

By the way, WHAT controversial Eric Stoltz footage???
Title: Re:Back to the Future disc details
Post by: subtitle on Oct 08, 2002 at 09:18 AM
regarding Eric Stoltz (http://us.imdb.com/Bio?Stoltz,+Eric), taken from imdb.com (http://us.imdb.com)

He was originally cast as Marty McFly in Back to the Future (1985). After filming about 1/3 of the movie, they fired him and hired Michael J. Fox. They said that Stoltz didn't act enough like a teenager.

Last week I was on an offshore training on Germany. The Back to the Future Triology boxed set (same cover with region 2 UK design) is already available in Germany for 44 Euro (around P2,200). Same feature with R1 except for the DTS track which is in German language, English track is on DD5.1 only.

Sayang yung DTS track German language, hindi ko tuloy binili.

BTW, are all R2 DVDs PAL?

from DVDReview:
"The extras will include an audio commentary with actor Michael J. Fox, director Robert Zemeckis and producer Bob Gale, outtakes from all three films...

Now that the discs are out, I can say that DVD Review's initial list of the special features is wrong.

The scene-specific audio commentary track does not include Michael J. Fox and Robert Zemeckis. Heard on the track are producers Bob Gale and Neil Canton, and it's really boring. Most of the stuff they discuss also turns up as text on your screen as pop-up factoids if you set that feature on, or is already discussed in the various documentaries included with the boxed set.

The track with Robert Zemeckis is not scene specific. In fact, it's not a commentary, it's a Q&A session and plays in the background while the movie runs, and has no correlation at all with the corresponding scenes.

The Michael J. Fox "commentary" can be accessed by clicking "enter" on your remote when a clock flashes at the bottom of your screen. He'll then appear in a small box on the screen, but what he talks about is not scene specific, either. It's like a guy just reminiscing about making the movie. I don't know if my disc is defective, but when you activate this feature, the movie completely STOPS at the end of Chapter 7. Can someone confirm this is normal, that he only has comments until that chapter?

Quote
"...deleted scenes (no mention either way on the controversial Eric Stoltz footage)"

That description from DVD Review was wrong, too. In part one of the new making-of documentary, they discuss how the movie was cast: when Michael J. Fox was thought to be unavailable, they screen-tested 2 other guys: Eric Stoltz and C. Thomas Howell. They all wanted Howell, BUT a studio executive insisted on Eric Stoltz, to disastrous results. They also showed one picture of Howell as Marty McFly, and several stills of Eric Stoltz from the initial version of the film:

Image from BTTF.com (http://www.bttf.com), the #1 BTTF information resource.
What bugs me is that although they explained that they had to recast the role of Jennifer (the girlfriend) when Michael J. Fox took over the lead (the original, Melora Hardin, was 2 inches taller than Fox), they still have not explained what has always been the biggest mystery to me: why Jennifer turned into Elisabeth Shue for Parts 2 and 3!  ;D

from http://us.imdb.com/Trivia?0096874 (http://us.imdb.com/Trivia?0096874)

Elisabeth Shue was cast as Jennifer, and all the closing shots of Back to the Future (1985) were re-shot for the beginning of this film. Claudia Wells (I) (Jennifer in Back to the Future (1985)) had disappeared from the acting scene in 1987 for undisclosed reasons

hey Mr Hankey, i tried the Michael J Fox pop up feature and yes, it does stop after chapter 7. i wonder why they did this instead of just having the interview as a separate feature altogether.  ???

If you're really that bothered with the framing thing, here's from a DVD website:

It only took five years to finally surface, and now it looks like the Back to the Future set is a bum steer. Universal Studios is issuing a (quiet) recall of the just-released collection because of the widescreen misframing of parts II and III (I is unaffected). If you bought the set and want corrected copies, send in your two discs without the case and a letter with the following information: Name, Full Mailing Address, Daytime Phone Number, Reason for Return and Return Address. Send all of this to:

Back to the Future DVD Returns
PO Box 224468
Dallas, Texas 75260

Universal will exchange Back to the Future parts II and III for copies with the updated framing in late February 2003. You can send the DVDs back now or wait until then.

You ask, is it worth all the trouble? Or are you just gonna stick with the copy that you have?
Title: Re:Back to the Future disc details
Post by: teemto on Dec 20, 2002 at 10:35 AM
I guess it really depends on how many shots are affected... if there are only 5-10 seconds of footage affected on each movie, then maybe non-die hard fans can settle for the existing version...

hi there,

I discovered another defect on part 2, pls confirm if you experienced it also.

On Part 2, if you activate the universal anecdote feature, the movie freezes before the end of chap3. The same to what happens to Part 1 if you activate the MJFox interview.

Also, when this feature is activated, the "texts" are  incomplete midway the movie.

meron naba naka experienced sa inyo nito?

one thing is for sure, this edition really sucks!!

Here's an an update for those Back to the Future box sets with the mis-framed Part II & III discs.

The corrected discs will be available by mail sometime in March. They'll also be issued to stores. Here's what Universal has been telling their customers, via e-mail, about how to identify the fixed sets:

"The new packaging will have a "V2" printed near the bottom of the screen format/bar code sticker. This will indicate that the set contains the remastered versions of BTTF II and BTTF III. The same "V2" will also appear on the new discs after the copyright language line."

FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE THE DEFECTIVE VERSION:

You can send Back to the Future disks 2 and 3, without the case, and a letter with the following information to:
Name
Full Mailing International Address
Daytime Phone Number
Reason for Return

Return Address:

"The new packaging will have a "V2" printed near the bottom of the screen format/bar code sticker. This will indicate that the set contains the remastered versions of BTTF II and BTTF III. The same "V2" will also appear on the new discs after the copyright language line."

Good!

Now, when I order from Benny or P@RC, I will insist on the V2 version.

BTW, April na, released na ba ito? (Mga suki, any news?)

hi guys!

Aside from the MISFRAMED problem of disc 2 and 3, does anyone of you BACK TO THE FUTURE owners encountered any problems on DISC ONE?

Mine kasi skipped on chapter 14 and totally stopped, and had to forward it to chapter 15, just to finish the movie...

Thanks! :)

Has anyone IN THE PHILIPPINES already sent the defective discs back to the address, and did you actually receive a corrected replacement?

Also, anyone in the STATES?

I want to know if I can send them to that Texas address from here, or if I should send them to a relative in the States to get them replaced for me.

Yaaaaay!

I came home last week to find that my replacement BTTF DVDs finally arrived! As expected (i read the discussions in the overseas sites), they came in two clear jewel cases.

Yaaaaaay!

I came home last night to discover that they sent me a second set of the corrected discs! Talk about customer service.

Now i have three sets of Back to the Futre discs 2 & 3.

I don't think there is a deadline.

No need for e receipt (like me since i got mine off Amazon).

However you may want to write to them first. I read on some message boards that for some overseas customers they waived the sending of the original discs (they just needed a serial number or something). You just need to write to their customer service center and explain your predicament. You see for US customers, Universal provided a free postage-paid mailer if you called this 1-800 number and they can't do this for foreign owners.

Post by: Atticus on May 14, 2003 at 06:14 PM
Do I need to be a US resident in order to get that free-postage? Because I might be going over there some time this year. As long as I use a US address, would that be OK?  But I do hope they will send the replacement while I'm still there or else I'll be coming home empty handed.  ;D

I was able to order the BTTF Trilogy through Charbit last December.   When I read that there was a glitch in the DVD transfer, I initially thought that returns from the US (together with receipt) would only be entertained.  So, I thought that my boxed set would not be qualified for an exchange.  I  later learned that some of you were able to get an exchange even without sending the defective discs or proof of purchase back.

I know that there is an address to which you can write to through snail mail.  However, does anyone know if there is an email address I can write to regarding inquiries concerning this matter?  I would really appreciate it -- sending snail mail would take weeks, if not months, before one would be able to receive a reply from them.

Thanks!

I sent in my defective copies back in February and still have not gotten the corrected ones yet.
So I just called Universal's Toll Free number to inquire. They apologized for the delay but can't give me any explanation for the delay. They said they will send me the corrected copies today for next day delivery service at their expense. So hoping I'll get em' tomorrow...  :P

i have received my replacements in the mail today. will test it later once i get home. the good thing is i didn't have to send my old dvds back  ;D

for those here in the philippines who want the corrected version, read the faq here (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=10e7810d4d506e475cdf46fbba831850&threadid=140414), specifically this part:

=======================================
***Replacements For International Customers with R1 Release:***
=======================================
Two options:

One you can just send your discs to the customer service center: Back to the Future DVD Returns, PO Box 224468, Dallas, Texas 75260. send the discs yourself to the above address, with the following info: Name, Full Mailing Address, Daytime Phone, Reason for Return (hah!). Package Discs up without the case, just discs 2 and 3 and no receipt is needed. Don't worry too much about protecting them for shipping, as Universal will be destroying the discs anyway.

Two, you can call or email Melissa McGee for Canadian returns. Some international customers have been able to get replacement discs without even returning their faulty ones via Melissa. Email [email protected] or call (866) 532-2202. Just write her a polite email/call and ask for instructions as an international customer and it's likely they'll just take your address and ship you new ones.

There does not appear to be a postage paid mailer program for international customers (like their is for US and Canada)- but many have gotten replacement discs by simply sending their faulty ones back to the Texas address and including their overseas shipping address and information.

Yes, you just have to send your mailing information (i.e., name and address).  They will be sending a message confirming receipt of your information and informing you that they'll be sending the discs in a couple of weeks.

Judging from the other posts, I don't really expect the replacement discs to arrive soon.  So, hintay na lang ako.  Actually, there's no rush.

Just received today my replacement discs.  The package was mailed out of Canada last June 9 and was received at the QC Central Post Office last June 26.  It took about three weeks for the package to arrive in the Philippines.  The package was delivered straight to my office's mailing section.  Normally, postal notices are sent out for me  to pick international packages from the post office.

I can say that their customer service at Universal Studios/Alliance Atlantis Video is excellent considering that they also served international customers.  In addition, they didn't even require international customers to mail their defective discs.  Sana, huwag maisipan ng mga mauutak na kababayan natin na abusuhin ang ganitong serbisyo.

I just took the chance in writing as mentioned in the previous posts, btw haven't opened yet my BTTF boxset containing the wrong discs, just curious, is there really a problem with the discs...?

There was a problem with the framing of BTTF 2 & 3 for the first batches of discs released...  I actually compared V1 (uncorrected version) with the V2 discs (corrected version) when i got them...  at first i thought that i wouldn't notice them since 21" TV lang yung ginagamit ko...  pero kitang-kita talaga na mali yung pagka-frame nung scene sa BTTF2 near the start of the movie when Marty was just trying on the jacket so that he'd look like his own son...  Kitang kita na iba talaga yung pagka-frame dun sa V1 compared sa V2... i believe there are links to those screenshots sa previous pages ng thread na to...  If you're going to check your disc, it's around the 20:00 to 25:00 minute mark ata...  sorry, can't remember the exact minute nung scene...

I can say that their customer service at Universal Studios/Alliance Atlantis Video is excellent considering that they also served international customers.  In addition, they didn't even require international customers to mail their defective discs.

I must say i was pleasantly surprised at how fast and easy it was to get my replacement discs...  when i first got the set and heard about the problem, i just thought that i'd just have to live with the fact that i bought a defective item, since i'm living in an R3 region, yet bought an R1 disc...  i'm glad they replaced our discs as well...

Sana, huwag maisipan ng mga mauutak na kababayan natin na abusuhin ang ganitong serbisyo.

Yup...  My thoughts exactly...

They must have noticed that a lot of international customers have been requesting for replacements.  I'm sure that a lot of those asking for replacements are not really V2 owners, considering that the process does not require the return of the defective discs.  This was what I was afraid of, as I've stated in an earlier post.  Fortunately, I was able to get my replacements before they changed their procedure.

this is bad news!   :-\  and i haven't received my V2 copies yet.  ang tagal na...   :'(

how would you know from the box if it is V1 or V2?  may nakasulat ba or anything?

The following came from the Home Theater Forum thread on the Back to the Future framing problem (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=10e7810d4d506e475cdf46fbba831850&threadid=140414"):

According to Universal, the new packaging has a "V2" printed near the bottom of the screen format/bar code sticker. This will indicate that the set contains the remastered versions of BTTF II and BTTF III. The same "V2" will also appear on the new discs after the copyright language line.

So short answer: there is a small "V2" stamped on a barcode sticker placed on the back of the packages, as well as being stamped on the discs themselves.

It has been confirmed that on replacement discs mailed from Universal the V2 is on the bottom of the disc right after "All Rights Reserved" as seen here:

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0TQDPAnoXoKIvg!IWtoxw1Iebk2i3BCbFuiHbAQ*IdSjnoefgL9Rb11APopbEcpYDe1r4vWPD3hHZzv1AmriudHWzoILipbV9aa!KKB3bW07frpoczQOkJw/bttf2_v2.jpg?dc=4675428854151240211)

So far no one has seen V2 in retail boxes, so no one has confirmed the markings on the packages. NO scans of the V2 boxes are available yet as none have appeared in retail stores.[/i]

I was browsing the net and I saw that the widescreen edition was re released last Sept 2 due to the fact that the 2nd & 3rd discs have framing problems. I am considering buying from Amazon Canada but I am having seconds thoughts cos there might be a difference with its American counterpart.  Any additional info regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank God I found this site.  You see I bought the Trilogy on the day i twas released more than a year ago in San Franciso.  It wasn't until I came back here in the Philippines that I found out about the framing errors.  I'm really a die hard fan of this trilogy so this is really a big deal for me.  I just want to ask if I can still return the defective discs at this time?  And if so, can you give me complete instructions on how to get the defective discs be replaced.  I would really appreciate a reply.  Thanks.

I was planning on ordering this via relatives in the States but then stumbled upon this thread (as well as the related one in dvd maintenance). Can anyone please confirm if it's already safe to buy this, either from Amazon or retailers like Fred Meyer, etc.? Or is it still the V2 with the fixed 2nd disc but still with the flawed 3rd disc?

Any info would really help, thanks!  ;D

i dunno about the US or ordering from amazon, but here in Canada, when i go look at BTTF over at Best Buy or some other shops, i still see no 'V2' markings anywhere in the packaging...  i can't tell if the ones being sold here are the fixed discs already or not...

you can get the R3 version here although i guarantee you that disc 3 is still the one with the mis-frame error but its hardly noticeable compared to the mis-frame error of disc 2.  Only disc 1 and 2 were really corrected by magnavision.  I think there are still available copies in astrovision with the sticker "New Version" attached to it

cherubrock, i would suggest that you email the guys in charge of the replacement discs (melissa mcgee - can't remember the address though, but i'm pretty sure it's in one of the earlier pages of this thread...  sorry, i'm too lazy to look!) and ask them if they are still replacing those misframed discs.  if they are, then go get the R1 version (heck, you might get lucky and get the 'V2' version!) and just have parts 2 and 3 replaced...  it's pretty quick and easy (and once again, the steps in how to request the replacement copies are in the previous pages of this thread)...  i got mine pretty fast, considering that i was still living in antipolo at the time i requested my replacement discs and had it sent there...  they didn't even ask me to mail in my misframed discs already since i'm in an international address...

BUT, if they're not doing the replacement thing anymore, then i'll just wish you good luck on finding a 'V2' BTTF at retail...

Kings5504, I'll think about your suggestion, but I'm kinda reluctant na to get this one at the moment. I read nga somewhere in this thread about people having the defective discs replaced (as well as all the hassles they've experienced) Me, I'm just hoping for a fixed version that I can enjoy straight off the rack without worries.

JhunDV, regarding replacement, i'm not so sure. As you can see, the last message posted, before my message was made on July 20, 2004, just more than a couple of posts from this one. Maybe, we can still try to e-mail Universal Studio (see previous pages). I really don't know.

Read the BTTF return and exchange FAQ here (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=225220)

according to the FAQ, nagpapalit lang ng R1 version ang Universal if you are in US or Canada.

it's a good thing nakuha ko na yung replacement discs almost two years ago from Melissa, without sending out my discs.

I received the old version as well. I e-mail Amazon about it. I told them that they mislead the consumers by posting the wrong pics with the sticker which sez “all 3 movies lowest price ever”. But I received the old version or version 1 with the old sticker which subtitle has posted. They apologized and refunded but has ask to return the item at their cost which is not bad at all. :)

I'm disposing my extra set of BTTF II and III (R1/v2) which was sent to me by Universal Pictures when I requested last 2003 for replacement discs for my defective discs.  For more info, please see my post in the Marketplace (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=78427.0).

Screenshot from my BD copy. Marty never landed on 2012. It was always 1955, 1985, and 2015.

We have to wait 3 more years in October  :)

I've been repeatedly telling people that on Facebook since I woke up this morning. The pattern was 30 years back, and 30 years forward. 1955 - 1985 -2015.

The creator of the hoax must be thrilled.  ;D

One amusing thing that happened to me because of the hoax: After spending a day informing many people on Facebook and Twitter that it was a hoax, Spartacus himself retweeted my warning.  :D

Sadly though, it was Liam McIntyre, not Kirk Douglas.  ;D
