check this out. http://www.svsubwoofers.com/faq.htm#moviedemos

Some examples : Attack of the Clones, Phantom Menace, Black Hawk Down, Twister, LOTR. Some of these movies don't have lots of bass but when they do they go really low.

They're not really "test" discs in the true sense of the word, but really movies for showcasing the LFE capability of your set-up at certain sections of the movie.  And you can use any of these sections to test.  If you can get hold of those THX-certified DVD titles, there's always a THX segment there for audio and video test that you can use for more thorough assessment.

I always use DTS demo disk 4 & 8 (DTS-ES) to demo LFE & surrounds to my guests. Beats opening every DVD and forwarding to the awesome LFE & surround scenes.

Demo disk 4:Haunting, AntZ, SPR
Disk 8: LOTR TTT, Pirates of the Carribean, Daredevil, Gangs of New York

Believe it or not, the loud LFE of these demo disks serve as my stress reliever when I am tired.
Specially the explosion in LOTR TTT wall breach scene! Grabe, my HT room & sofa shakes from this scene.

Also:
Blade 2 (DTS-ES) Club scene
Day After Tomorrow (Flooding scene)
AVP
Sky Captain

The canon shots go really deep here, but not that loud.  Like the 10hz in the SW pod races, they should tell you how low your subs can go, but not how powerful or slammy.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN dts

While the first 30 minutes of SPR can  test your sub for the explosions, it really does a better job more as a showcase of what a 5.1 surround set-up can do as the bullets criss-cross the room and the machine guns fire from every direction.  It's probably the most intense surround activity cramped in 30 minutes.

A spectograph can measure that.  Not at home.  The pod race contains 10 hz components according to some lab measurements in at least two net articles I read a few years back.  So if your sub can go down to 22hz as most serious subs do, others down to 18hz,  then the sub can really do its job as there'd be a lot of those low frequency signals the sub can work on.

Thats what I always expect sa mga THX titles; but I was dissapointed by the "The Abyss" dvd R3 version kasi wala syang THX test menu although nakalagay sa packaging na "THX Certified".  Grabe talaga ibang R3, madaya!  Well, kasi baka dahil P299 lang sya...

The LFE sweep on the THX optimizer will require an SPL meter to check for flat frequency levels at your listening position as the frequencies traverse the crossover point between your main and sub from 200hz to 20hz.  Without it, you can just use your ears.  If there are peaks and suck-outs, then you can adjust the crossover points or use bass traps or use paramteric eq to attain the flattest response you can get

Sorry for delayed response.  Saw this just now.

Yes, the aim is seamless crossing between the sub and main.  But the THX sweep can also identify peaks (in-phase reinforcements)  and suck-outs (out-of-phase cancellations) due to room modes unique to your room geometry.  Then you can correct for these abberations.

Thank you, Dunforgiven.  The things I say can always be verfied by a simple google search to check them out for more details.  In the case of room modes, that's the phrase you can google and there are many excellent explanations out there.

And no, while I'd like to, I believe the net is a great 101 course for virtually anything under the sun.  ;D  Thanks again.

Can be both, if the avr's XO doesn't go low enough and you hear a peaking of bass signals slightly below the AVR's XO point.  Adjusting the sub to an XO lower than the AVR can help.

Joy Ride

I ignored this a gazillion times at DVD sales. I never expected this to be a good thriller.

The DD is soundtrack quite good, lots of LFE and surround action. Crank up your sub for this movie for fun. When the trucks pass by, they will come from your surrounds and pan to the front. A good sub can really jolt your sofa & make you feel like trucks are beside you.

just watch the 'Infernal Affairs', a local HK film on which the new 'THE DEPARTED' movie is based.

its on DTS format with english subtitles...

the background music has lots of LFE's, the closing of the steel doors the gun shots are very good...there are some scenes that it seems you are in the middle of it ant the bass seems to be all around you....there is some scene that my pants are shaking a bit because of the bass....hehehe and the glass of my cabinet is rattling including the windows......

this is the latest that I've watch and I enjoy it...the movie itself is very good....

I watch this out of curiousity, If director Martin Scorsese find these movie in HK quite good and actually has to make a re-make of it, then this must be a good movie....

but honestly, after watching this movie, I cant wait for 'The Departed'..... the original HK flick is hard to top IMO....:)

lots of good sounding scene, sword fight sequence, thunderous horse running etc.... (and the PQ is awesome too, very good cinematography).

Definitely "War of the Worlds" lightning scene. Goes down to 5 hz.

I agree with this, muntik na bumigay yung old sub ko dito dati, nag-plak-plak na yung tunog, di kinaya, hehehe ;D

Try also Master and Commander, nice LFE :)

I'll also add in Godzilla(1998)

The scene where the Big G enters Manhattan with his thumpin footsteps truly rocks my world.

BD version of "Flight of the Phoenix." While this is a BD, I guess its still valid to post the *warning* here.

This disc is notorious for having very strong LFE. I waited a long time before I thought my set-up was ready (2 big subs, bass traps, correct bass management settings at the AVR, proper Audyssey calibration). Watched it over the weekend and the LFE is indeed incredible - might be the strongest and most continuous that I've heard. Maybe the strongest LFE is during the plane crash but actually, even the background sounds throughout the movie have really deep LFE.

The end-result is that it blew my Velodyne HGS-15, which I had suspected of having a slight damage. Now, it is really gone.  :'( :'(

sinira ang Velo mo???   wow.

Sunshine BD version rin, I have to turn down the sub levels.   Strong LFEs too, right at the opening scenes.

sinira ang Velo mo???   wow.

Yup. 1250 watts amp. 15" driver. Paayos ko sa friend ni Alvin. Meanwhile ...

Matagal nang tingin ko may defect but lumalabas lang with very deep bass. Ngayon, alam kong sira na talaga cuz when I do an Audyssey calibration, the distance to the sub is set at 4 feet, when it is actually more than 18 feet. I did the test 4 times before I realized that it was the Velo that caused the errors. When I removed the Velo and just used the Paradigm sub, ok na distance. The general rule is that if there is a big error in the distances that Audyssey detects, the problem is either ambient noise during the calibration or a blown speaker.

Ergo, watch "Flight of the Phoenix" at your own risk.  ;D

Cloverfield

This is the deepest bass I have ever heard. I have 2 big subs that can go subsonic and there was very little audible bass you could hear and yet, my whole room was shaking like crazy. Kasi you can't hear subsonic bass (by its very definition).

It's actually kinda scary to play this movie at reference level cuz you could easily destroy your subs.

Watched lately Shooter and man this movie has lots of LFEs.  The rifle shot was heavenly.  Also the part where Wahlberg goes Rambo chased by a chopper when all of the bombs were activated.  Shook my room considering that it's only DD!  ;D

I just watched:

1. Finding Nemo (Chapter 25, the Darla scene); and
2. War of the Worlds (from the beginning until the lightning strikes 26 times scene)

Wow! What a difference a sub makes!

I was actually regretting buying War of the Worlds (I was thinking of Minority Report when I picked it up at one Astro sale) but if only for the lightning scenes, I'm keeping it!
