Got a copy yesterday from Astro Glorietta. Its the 3 disc version. At 900 bucks, this really is a steal. FYI, the lady at the counter said that they only have a few copies of this title.

i think digipak, ok pagkaka package!  may tagalog subtitles nga eh  ;D
all in all, this is a great buy!  baka limited copies nga

but the problem is, do they suffer the same problem with r1 (pixelation on a certain scene)?

I'll get this one later.  Among sa new releases with a 900 price tag (EPIII, War of the Worlds), dito ko na lang gastusin budget ko.  For me, mas sulit 900 ko for this as it is 3discs.

Post by: hemisphere on Nov 21, 2005 at 01:37 PM
it's digipak and has 3 discs. art prints are slightly subdued compared to R1. but high quality imo.

embossed front title and title on spine (slipcase) is in silver. no insert. chapters were printed on the case.

nice buy!!

only 15 copies delivered to Video City Greenbelt 1.

Just got home after a one week conference in Tagaytay. I went straight to Ayala. May sale pala. Then I saw Charlie & the Chocolate Factory DVD (sa Astro Glorieta). Nung inabot ko na sa counter, they asked me if I wanted the Titanic SE (suki kasi ako). I was shocked when I found out 900 bucks lang siya! Sige agad ako. That was the last stock they had daw yesterday evening.

Got my copy today from Astro Glorietta.

Some observations:

1) The reported glitch at 1:19 found in the R1 is non existent here in the R3.  :)

2) The features list mentions of a "Microsoft HD Preview", but I could not seem to find it anywhere across the 3 discs.

3) I can't seem to find the "Music Video" and the "Alternate Ending" as well.  ???

Fellow collectors hwag kayo magpanic buying, I called up several astro shops..the DVDs are just coming in palang sa shop nila, there was one store even advise me na "sir magpareserve kana baka maubusan ka"
she even told me there are some buyers who gets 2-3 copies of Titanic...hmmmm bad :-\

Remember our ECONOMICS, Law of Demand and Supply !!
I think theres enough for everyone...who knows bka by Dec umabot sa sale toh we can get a copy at 750 or lower dba....

The quality of the R3 DVDs released here have improved that's why a lot of people are buying multiple copies. I don't mind that it isn't R1 (which I prefer), as long as it's a good quality product. At last, the DVD gods have heard us. ;D

i had mine reserved the other night. i called astro plus megamall and they told me that they still have 5 copies that night. when i went there yesterday, i was surprised that they didn't put them on display. they were on hidden inside their counter.

anyway, while truth to say that i'm no fan of locally pressed dvds (or cds), the price of this one blew me away!  besides, it's a collectible in itself because of the tagalog subtitle!

Stocks seem limited. In fact, the stores seem confident enough not to put them in display. I got one from Video City Cubao. I thought ubos na since walang naka-display. But when I asked the sales person, they said they still have stocks hidden but some are already reserved. Video City pa lang yon. How much more kung sa Astro.

I was very impressed with the video and audio quality of the movie. I used the DTS ES 6.1 surround (kahit 5.1 lang set-up ko), and it's amazing. The bit rate is almost full at 9.9+ most of the time.

It's probably one of the best DVDs in terms of price, quality, and packaging. The fact that this is the highest grossing movie of all time makes it another must-buy collector's item. I'm surprised firewired didn't place this in the front page.

So for those waiting for it to go on sale, I suggest bumili na kayo.

And when I compared the previous one which was non-anamorphic it blew the other one away not only in terms of picture quality but the soundtrack which was presented at DTS-ES 6.1 Discreet! I finally succombed and got a copy last Monday.  Video City and Odyssey at SM Sucat had one copy each as of yesterday.

Brings back some memories.  This is an 8-year old film that I saw as a pirated DVD in 2002.   Good thing I never had the compulsion to get the non-anamorphic  first release.   Another case of "good things come to those who wait."  Watched it in parts over the last few days and I must say, the three DVD-9 discs are worth it.  The 4-disc release is probably a better buy,  but for the price, I have little to worry about.  Some would say P900 would be just right.  Like buying those single P299 DVDs three times.  The extras on the third disc are definitely quite revealing and worth it.  A lot of reviews abound out there on the Titanic, but I can't help but put down my thoughts on what I've seen on these exquisitely packaged DVD set.  I especially liked the Parody section with the 30-sec bunnies.  It tells the nearly 4-hour-long film precisely in 30 seconds without really missing a beat.  And funny besides.   ;D  Even the Saturday Night Live parody is great.  I only wished it was Cameron who got kicked and punched and not the old lady, for giving us a silly love angle that is totally unnecessary and a waste given the awesome human tragedy that is the Titanic.

After a drought of about 3 years after first watching it on pDVD (Never got to see it in the theaters.), I have to say the film is really a masterpiece of production value.  If only for this, the DVD is worth owning.   The story is something else.   With the way things are, Titanic is really more a love story between Jack and Rose revealed thru a treasure hunting expedition centering on the Titanic.  The Titanic tragedy becomes incidental and serves merely as a tragic prop to a tragic love angle essayed in a doomed treasure hunt.  ;D

This is one of the few titles I have with so many deleted scenes.  For some reason, I find the alternate ending found on the 2nd disc much more satisfying.  Personally, there's a few self-contradictions in Cameron's comments on those deleted scenes that I have to question much of what was put into the film.  Cameron says putting more meat to the strory of Brock is out of place right after a dose of the disaster.  He's right, after putting the disaster in the context of a treasure hunting expedition,  Cameron realizes that the subplot is really unnecessary and goes on to abandon a satisfying end to this subplot and instead truncate the ending, trying to put poetry into a silly love story at the same time putting a pathetic cinematic close to a tragic drama whose breathtaking sweep takes the wind out of any concluding attempt at poetry.  But it does nicely in the context of a contrived silly love story which unfortunately, the titanic is not about.

The 3rd disc talks about  Cameron going to great lengths "separating the fact from fiction" in filming the Titanic story, and proceeding to film the disaster with the most realistic visuals at his disposal.  That's commendable, but Cameron invariably wastes his noble agenda and dillutes the drama by injecting a fictional love story in a contrived attempt to engage the audience emotionally in preparation for the impending disaster.  My goodness, the disaster's awesome breath is too emotionally engaging enough to bother justaposing a silly romantic tragedy in parallel with the ship's.  And I agree with Cameron in taking out the supposedely suspenseful fight scene between Lovejoy and Jack,  all attempts on their lives put unnecessary "jeopardy"  on top of the sinking.  There are just too much of the unnecessary shots in a film of this epic scope, including those that went into the final version.  What's so nice in the DVD extras is that the director seems to point them out unrepentantly.  Cameron promptly deletes the scene.

I just have to say that the film is definitively a visual and sonic delight about the sinking of a ship.  It's one great title to add to your collection.  For DiCaprio fans, what can I say.  His performance, while not in the same league as Billy Zane's psycho case, or Winslet's conflicted suicidal persona, is adequate enough.  With so little words, Bernard Lee as the captain speaks volumes on a man aiming to cap his career with this voyage but realizes it all ends in a matter of two hours. The other character players give meaning to the term humanity and provides some fascinating glimpses on what high society was at that time.  I can't seem to have enough of it.

I wish another film will be released in the future about the Titanic from the point of view of the people who owned the liner - essaying the socio-political and business dynamics behind the creation and destruction of the ship.  More in depth look about the real people who were in it.  What the liner executives had to contend with creating the biggest moving object at that time and how they handled the horrors of its demise.  With the same visual realism as Cameron's vision.  But no love story, pls.   ;D  Just my thoughts.

Finally got my copy at Astro SM Pampanga...

Wow, ganda ng deleted scenes.

Though may gusto lng ako i-point-out  sa features:

1. As previously stated by some members, i really can't find the Microsoft HD Preview, and I have no idea what that is. (Is that the movie they're releasing on WM HD Format or is it now actually accesible on the disc itself??), Kung wala talaga yung feature na 'to, we can add it to the "Features on R3 releases are not consistent" section, hehe.

2. In comparisson of the features of the R3 3-disc and the R2 4-disc, it seems that the parodies that are contained on the R2 release are already on the 3rd disc... (And those parodies are only accessed as Easter Eggs on the R1 version...)

3.  Which gives me the conclusion that yung HBO Making Of Featurette and some trailers lang yung wala sa R1 at R3 verisons? So, in a way, good buy na din ito @ 900 pesos (810 pesos for those who got discounts...  ;D) IMHO...

yep! Big Steal na yan for P900 pesos! Im glad di na sinama ni Jim Cameron yung deleted scenes sa Theatrical version, (like what he did in T2 ultimate edition and extreme edition (pero u have the choice naman ;D)) medyo corny kasi yung ibang scenes lalo na yung alternate ending  :( just my "dos banchincos"  ;D but all in all A+ yung dvd!

and no need to panic buying peeps! nagkalat din ang TITANIC DVD sa Diff. stores....found copies at (astro, video city, record bar, odyssey) S.M san lazaro, SM manila (Astro), Robs ERMITA (astro)..  ;) hope this helps!

the deleted scenes amount to 45 minutes more or less, but it's a good thing cameron did not reinsert the scenes back because nothing would have changed much except the movie getting even more longer.  unlike the deleted scenes in t2, abyss and aliens,  they kind of changed the movie altogether from their theatrical versions, more interesting in fact, in the case of the abyss and aliens.  even the alternate ending lacked the emotional oomph of the theatrical version.

anyhow, got this title for 10% off release day so no big deal, IMO.

Well, yung Star Wars 1 and 2 sellng for 899 when they were released are now only 299.  And so many other titles selling for close to 1T now sold at 299 or 350.  Diyan din lahat ang bagsak ng mga yan after about a year languishing in the shelves.   ;D

Actually, a few years back in a other forum, I learned it only cost around $2.00 - $2.40 to mass produce and package an R1 DVD title, depending on the volume, among others, inclusive of overhead.   Kaya nga sa sale price na P299 tubo pa sila.   ;D

well.. hopefully this would not be a trend. it would not actually kill the industry but value of the item somehow depreciates. cant blame anyone though. R1 Titanic is selling for less than $15.00 shipped. that's why i purchased the LE instead for collectibility.

why cant they sell the dvds at a much lower price like what warner is doing?

PROFIT!!!!

There's a break even point in anything sold.  When DVDs and CDs are first released, the makers calculate it would only take X number of titles sold to break even at the standard SRP they often dictate.  After that, it's all tubong lugaw.  Kahit mag-sale na, for as long as they met the X number of titles on the first run, tubo na.

Warner's pricing strategy seems more market oriented.
Title: Re: Titanic: 3-Disc Deluxe Collector's Edition (Php 900)

Also as with any other businesses, owners want to recoup their investment ASAP with a "satisfactory" percentage of profit.  Believe t or not this is just good business sense.  After they achieve that, even if the DVDs are on sale...they would just treat this as additional income.

Warner's strategy seems to be mass producing their DVDs at a lower cost.  They seem to want to make profit by selling truck loads of DVDs instead of having a return of investment at the shortest time.  In the long run, I would say this would be more profitable.  Because even if I don't really like a particular movie, with Warner's affordable price range...I end up buying the DVD for collection purposes.  I reckon..."  Tutal 499/475 lang naman."

 ;D

Often I can't help but question if DVDs are indeed collectibles whose value is expected to appreciate over time. Admittedly there are titles that are hard to find or those so-called OOP (out of print) titles that can command a good resale price.  But only TODAY or for as long as DVD is the dominant video format.

DVD,  no matter how good it is,  is still a format that is very much technology dependent.  And anything that is technology dependent has so much obsolescence.   20 years from now, when HD-DVD or Blu-Ray or some other more universal high definition format becomes the dominant video format for home repro, I have to wonder what those OOP and criterion DVDs would be worth, especially if the studios would also be releasing those same titles in the HD formats.  By that time, I don't see how my kids and their generation would have any compulsion to buy old DVD stuff, when the newer HD formats will thrash even upsampled DVDs.  I think a parallel situation can be seen with what happened to VHS-tapes and LDs.  I have a colleague in the US with a roomful of nicely packaged LDs and wall -to-wall VHS collections.   And they're all junk by now.  For a time LDs tried to hang on.  But the picture and sonic superiority of DVD has been so demonstrably proven that they eventually converted  LD aficionados.  (The audio LPs are another story as the debate betwen analog and digital in audio reproduction still rumbles on.)  And HD is a real jaw-dropper.  It makes an upsampled DVD look garbage by comparison on the same display.   ;D

avphile, i believe that DVDs would eventually become a thing of the past. but its collectibility depends on markets and cultural perception. i have been participating in other forums where LD's of Star Wars, Nightmare Before Xmas, Lion King, and other films are sought after and being revered as ultimate releases. also, VHS tapes of godfather, titanic and red dragon are collectibles because of additional film stuff not found in the present releases.

re OOPs and other collectible releases, it is only in the Philippines that these DVDs are not purchased at real time market value. maybe because of lack of knowledge or a pending uneducated purchase is proved to be difficult to resist. whatever the reason is, the Filipino market customizes its taste, value derivation and perceived truths according to economics and present (not future) significance in their lives.

dominant or not, DVDs with unique packagings would always have a place in history maybe not in our time but in the future. and these releases would definitely reap big bucks or value as technology progresses. now, DVDs in plain amaray cases.. im not so sure.

 ;)

Collectibility is more a financial proposition than anything.  It's like a derivative investment that banks on their future value.  It can go either way.  We're actually gambling and betting they'll command unique values in the future to command appreciated prices.  In your example of LDs, the film stuff and features in some LD titles that are nowhere in the new DVD releases guaranteed they have a unique value that can command collectibility status. And how many are these against all the LDs and VHS released?  I don't think LD buyers knew that when they bought them 10 years ago.  What if the newer DVD releases had the same film stuff and features?  They'd be junk.  That's the risk.

So packaging can be a collectibility determinant.  I hope you're right, as I do have some titles with unique packaging.    ;D

Sila lang nakita ko na P550 kahapon.  Yung ibang stores P900 pa rin.   I don't know if kasali na Astro sa P550.

Got my copy just this morning at Landmark, problem is when I play it at home I cannot turn off the subtitle. Changing to another language was possible but not turning it off(using the menu).  This is one of those copies that cannot change the subtitle during playback but only on the menu.
Im pretty sure that my DVD player is working well because I was able to turn off the subtitle when playing a different title (incredibles R1).

Any advice?  Has anyone  experienced the same problem? Should I have the disc exchange?

TIA

probably this is the trend of fox's dvds.  I bought Titanic when it was still at P900 at ganun din ang na experience ko.  Same thing with Robots, hindi pwede palitan or i-off subtitles.  Pero di lang fox dvds ang may ganito situation.  I remember my Spiderman 1 dvd, hindi rin pwede magpalit ng audio at subtitle.

Recently bought this edition and watched it a few days ago. Grabe ang haba ng movie, more than 3 hours yata, but I didn't notice it until after the movie.  I remember when I first watched Titanic years ago, the special effects were really ground breaking.

I regret watching the alternate ending in this edition's special features.  It sort of destroys the mood of the whole movie.   Better to see it on another time instead of right after watching the movie.

Considering that this release was already a very good value at P900 and it seems that it failed to sell as they are already discounting it, it seems that there is little support here locally for quality dvd releases.

That's the effect of VAT! People would rather spend on other necessities: food, transpo, etc. It's about time they lower all the prices to "sale price" of P299 or even P250 indefinitely, just like what they did to Viva/Disney titles last Christmas. Quality releases just like this one should remain at P550.

A word to other studios: If Titanic DE couldn't be disposed at P900, who'd they expect to buy their Gladiator EE (P1700) and Jurassic Park trilogy (P3200)?

Well, yung Star Wars 1 and 2 sellng for 899 when they were released are now only 299.  And so many other titles selling for close to 1T now sold at 299 or 350.  Diyan din lahat ang bagsak ng mga yan after about a year languishing in the shelves.   ;D

Actually, a few years back in a other forum, I learned it only cost around $2.00 - $2.40 to mass produce and package an R1 DVD title, depending on the volume, among others, inclusive of overhead. Kaya nga sa sale price na P299 tubo pa sila. ;D

Nagdilang anghel na si av_phile. ;D

I'm all set to replace my old R1 since the non-anamorphic looks really awful on my widescreen TV, but it seems that the 3-disc release is out of stock.  Old single disc ang release ng Viva ngayon at P450.

here's the specs of the 4-disc deluxe CE as posted at dvdanswers, those highlighted in red are the contents of the 4th disc (w/c will not be included in the r1 release):

# Four-Disc Deluxe Collector's Edition
# Includes the 2-disc Special Edition plus more than three hours of never-before-seen material:
# Over 45 Minutes of New Deleted Footage: Jack fighting for his life, the passionate kiss you never saw, and Jack and Rose in their final moments together, this is just a sampling of over 45 minutes of new deleted scenes made available for the first time. Each scene is state of the art, with the effects finished to match the special effects in the theatrical feature
# Production and Special Effects Featurettes: with this selection of featurettes, take an insiders look at James Cameron in action. Get a better understanding of what goes on behind-the-scenes of a major movie production.  Experience the building of the “TITANIC” studio and film set from the ground up. Dissect scenes.  Dive to the wreckage of the actual ship. View the film crew’s personal video footage and much more
# 'Breaking New Ground': this TV special shows that there is much more to TITANIC than you ever imagined. Watch the monumental efforts that went into creating this film, beginning with building a studio just for the production of TITANIC through to its changing of industry standards, and breaking industry records
# 'The Heart of the Ocean':  HBO’s First Look TV special takes a look at TITANIC before it became the largest floating vessel of the worldwide box-office that we know today
# Three TITANIC Parodies: watch as the biggest film of all-time is spoofed in these three pieces
# Trailers: a selection of trailers, including some never-before-aired or shown

our r3 version pala has most of the features included in the 4-disc version except the HBO special.

sa ngayon, wala na siya sa market. maski 'yung one-disc edition. baka maglalabas ng bagong version since kalalabas lang ng 3D version. though mag-post ka lang sa LF section. baka may magbenta sa 'yo ng kopya. :)
