Title: Show Off DVDs
Post by: Spartacus on Dec 11, 2001 at 09:08 PM
I was wondering what DVD (or DVD's) do you have that you like to use to show off  or educate your friends with?

You know a friend comes over and asks "What's so special about DVDs?". Then automatically it's the first disc you reach for.

Follow up question. Why that disc?  ???

Se7en: Platinum Edition - excellent video and audio, great special features that includes use of the "angle" function.
Akira: Special Edition - the "Pill" function that translates the Japanese signs and grafitti that appear throughout the film.
Citizen Kane - the best looking Kane I have ever seen.

FYI, Men in Black has a similar feature to "spice up" the commentary, with silhouettes of Tommy Lee Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld at the bottom of the screen, purportedly talking at the screen ala MST3K.

Moulin Rouge has so many features that it would be a good choice. It actually has a FUNCTIONAL multiple-angle feature, for three of the dance sequences. PLUS, the other camera angles are seen at the bottom of the main image, making it easier to select which angle you want to see.

It also has the "Follow the Green Fairy" feature on the first disc, which jumps to well-narrated production footage of particular scenes while actually watching the movie.

Besides, if all else fails and your friends still don't like DVD, show them the Aguillera video/MTV performance. ;)

I also Demo Super speedway. It has a simple intro then they have a short preview of the car running that will rock your HT then shock na agad sila. If its your first time to watch, you wont expect the sound to be very loud and suddenly the car will appear and full blast agad ang sound.
I also use SPR,T2,Bugs Life,Matrix,Episode 1 and Eagles. Now desperado Superbit na pang demo ko.

Grabe and super ang special effects though hindi ko pa ma-getz ang kwento. And also my DTS movie collection. So that they will know what DTS means and how it compares with Dolby Digital.

Now if all that fails, I will make their patriotic blood boil through my DAHIL MAY ISANG IKAW and JOSE RIZAL dvds he he he. Oks ba? ;D

3.  Desperado Superbit - for video and audio clarity and to explain kung ano ang Superbit
4.  Episode 1 - for almost everything.

Just discovered another demo disc: The Fast and the Furious

Great action; a dense, relentless soundtrack; astounding capture of car sounds; and hot visuals. All this, within an interesting view into a subculture. Played it during a party last night and it got everyone whooping and howling and slapping high-fives. A real kick-a$$ movie!

For video show-off: Any Pixar or direct-to-DVD transfers like A Bugs Life and Tpy Story.  They're just jaw-droppers especially on full-screen or 1.85:1 aspect ratio.   Until I get a 16:9 plasma TV, can't say many DVDs can be show-offs visually,  All those 2.35:1 aspects, they, even the superbits, look pathetiicaly small on a 29" 4:3 TV.  Unless I zoom them 1.5x.

But on the audio side, with aggreesive mixes, deep and strong bass, active and split surrounds and lush background music, here's my list, to mention some:

Saving Private Ryan,
Lord Of The Rings
Armageddon
Jurassic Park
True Lies
The Fifth Element, Superbit
The Mummy/The Mummy Returns
The Hunted
Atlantis
Pearl Harbor (attack scenes)
Earl Klugh, The Jazz Channel
Kenny Loggins, Live outside fron the Redwoods
.

Don't think anyone has mentioned Diana Krall in Paris yet. Still the best-sounding concert I've heard. James Taylor at the Beacon Theater is another standard demo, not flashy, but really good (and correctly mixed for multichannel, say the experts).

For movies, it looks like the upcoming Episode II will be a killer demo. Among the existing ones not yet mentioned, I would cite Any Given Sunday.

By far the best demo I've seen was a recording of an HDTV broadcast of the Wimbledon finals. You could literally see individual blades of grass.

For my friends who are anime fans - I pop in Escaflowne the Movie, switch on the DTS track and then skip to the battle between Escaflowne and Dilandau's guymelaf.

For action fans - I pop in Blade II, switch to DTS and skip to the club scene.

For general demos - I use Episode I and T2: UE

well i was right, best buy was selling it for 1 cent so picked up 5 copies for 5cents! ;D

i was really tempted to grab them all, pero that would have been very abusive. ;)

there is a thx optimizer in the dvd, the audio was only in dd5.1, no dts :(
the video was nice since it had a side by side comparison on how they where able to restore the film Mash!, you can really see the improvement on the color! However i did notice that the sharpness was a bit better on the old footage, so its kind of a trade off.
theres also a section explaining anamorphic dvd's but its only text based so its kinda boring with all those reading! :-\

but hey! what can you expect for 1 cent! :)

How much is a penny these days in pesos? Sayang din ano. :)

let's see 100pennies =$1, and $1= 50 pesos(average) then a penny would be 50 divided by 100 or .5 centavos. tama ba?

anyway another great dvd to show off to teens is the AV:X.07 - Recreate
 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006G8HU)

Andy Ling and the Evolution team have created a seamless blend of music to accompany the visuals for this disc and have succeeded amazingly. DJ and VJ artists such as David James, Basilica, Tarrentella, Filmpalast and others have had their music mixed together into a cohesive compilation that flows perfectly from each visual creation. The music itself is slow beat trance and dance mix that is easily listened to and never moves to fast. The upbeat tempo and eclectic mix of sounds is always changing and moving.

The video is similar to the music. Comprised of entirely computer created imagery from several artists, the Brooklyn, New York group Exotic Robotics have combined the visuals from renowned VJs into a consistent mix. The images range from simple geographic shapes and 3D imagery to computer manipulated photo-realistic footage. Overall, the images are beautifully done, constantly moving and always interesting.

so if your into techno house music, then this dvd is a must buy! :)

I was wondering what DVD (or DVD's) do you have that you like to use to show off  or educate your friends with?. I'm assuming that this means - about DVDs in general, not cinema history. Thread originator, please correct me if I'm wrong.

As for the DVDs you mentioned, I think it would be more far more suited to the thread What Rare DVDs do you own? (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=515)

Title: Re:Show Off DVDs
Post by: paeng on Dec 16, 2002 at 10:11 AM
Sorry, I thought you meant the original meaning of "education."

Generally, any film can be used to show to a potential equipment buyer. If he's a "phile", then you can just "wow" him with the equipment. If he's trying to follow the Joneses, then just show him *Shrek* or *Star Wars*. W.C. Fields' advice makes sense here.

The tough part involves dealing with a sophisticated film viewer. Since he values quality over gimmickry, one way of showing him that it makes sense to invest in the hardware is the durability of the medium and the availability of "rare" films (actually, films that they prefer).

The risk is that the equipment might become outdated soon.

Show off DVDs include Cocteau's *Beauty and the Beast* and, ideally, *Death in Venice*. The rest can be appreciated or purchased by anyone, so there's nothing to show off there.

I bought Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" and "Lolita" when these were still on discount sale. I was not even born when these films were released (born 1978) and am grateful that the DVD technology can bring back these excellent films to my generation.

I am particularly impressed with the sharpness of "Barry Lyndon". I can even recognize the freckles of the actors. The film doesn't look old at all!

And these are the films that I show off to my friends when they visit.

Just watched Charlotte Gray. It's rep for having demo-quality video is well-deserved.

In fact it's taught me new things about video quality in DVDs. More than just clarity and color, the image of this DVD is three-dimensional. The last time I watched something this three-dimensional was the D-VHS of U-571.

Those canon shots in Master & Commander can really bring out the most of your sub.

^Yes!

...and also to test how well your sub can double as a bass-shaker for your sofa or bed...

(Spoiler alert)

I like that scene where he first sees the flashes through his telescope...
...which means the sub's going to get an "exam" in a couple of seconds!

(Just realized that I've posted about this film several times now, in different threads - I must like it, hehe)

Pearl Harbor - Vista Series:
Not necessarily the greatest story, but great sound and imagery. One of those titles that really distinguishes DTS from DD
Fast and the Furious:
Great sound pulsating from surrounds, really gives your sub a workout
Matrix:
The quintessential dvd
Fight Club - Special Ed:
Simply because it's on of my fave titles, apart from the special features
Se7en - New Line Platinum Ed:
Great comparison from the original and the reworked version, and one of the most critically acclaimed titles released.
