I will try Prince of Egypt.  This disc has been in my collection for months and have not watched it yet. :-[ Bently, with your options, your collection must total more than 500 discs.

Definitely it would be:
Jesus of Nazareth

Other than that, a total abstinence
and have little peace and silence
around the house.

I looked over my collection and I realized I have only 2 with any religious content. Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. Passion of Joan of Arc only vaguely, I guess.

So it's Ben Hur for today since I only got it yesterday. It's quite hilarious to see the screen tests. Imagine Leslie Nielsen in the role of Ben Hur. I mean, he played it straight but I can't look at him now without suppressing a laugh.  ;D

It's Holy Thursday and I'm watching the X-Files Season 1. :D

I don't know what else I'm going to watch for the next few days, but I'm pretty sure The Sound Of Music will be one of them.

Sadly, I don't seem to have any "religious" movies on dvd.  I haven't really decided yet on what to watch but tonight I guess I'll have to pop in a disc since nothing good will be on tv. Maybe I'll watch George Benson - Absolutely Live. I'm tempted too to start with the Sopranos box but I thinking of selling it since it's unopened and I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it.  I haven't seen a single episode so I don't know. ???

benny, if you enjoy mob movies (The Godfather series, Goodfellas, Casino) then you will enjoy The Sopranos. It is one cool series, and James Gandolfini is a terrific presence. The show is by turns laugh-out-loud funny, suspenseful, shockingly violent, and terrifying -- but it is always innovative and unpredictable, keeping you on your toes and off-balance. It all fits tightly together in a well-written, well-acted package. The Sopranos is one set I do not regret buying, and I am definitely picking up season 2 when it's released.

My Holy Week movies are Endless Waltz: The Gundam Wing movie and JFK Oliver Stone Collection. Am getting together with a couple of friends tonight to view these. It's always better with friends. ;)

Okay, for those of you who like Bently has about 500+ discs in their collection, how do you afford it? logistics is my main enemy with this hobby of ours. Right now I have only about 50 discs, all region 1s. What I do is I record to vhs. I know this is a demotion, but what can I do? I record or collect practically 99% of what I watch on dvd. And I average about 3 to 4 NEW films each week. BTW, I just got Space Cowboys,The Million Dollar Hotel (killer soundtrack by Bono and U2),Tigerland, Billy Elliot and The Yards this week (all region 1s). If I record to vhs, my cost will only be about 132.00 pesos (72 pesos for Sony DX-e180 vhs and 60-70 pesos dvd rental), well plus the about 2 and a half hours (including the special features)electricity bill I spend watching the movie. So guys, how do you do it?

gonz  --- thanks for the capsule review of the Sopranos.  I guess I'll enjoy the box since I love the following movies: Casino, Goodfellas, Untouchables etc.. :) (or anything remotely "Scorsese", even enjoyed Bringing Out the Dead - and hey, I even have a copy of that.)

my advise is just really stick to movies that you really like, at one time i had more than 10 criterion collection titles in my collection, but it was just gathering dust on the shelves, so i sold most of them on ebay...(cha-ching! made a lot more than i paid for it) and just kept the titles that i know, i will watch again, and again.

Hello everyone! We're still in Cebu having the hardest time connecting to PinoyDVD. We can see the site, but for some odd reason, we can't post! >:( Cafes here are also painfully slooow, so we're trying to borrow a friend's dial-up to connect through Mozcom. I'm using someone's office connection and it's a relief to be able to read AND write.

Luckily, we brought along a couple of DVDs to watch over the long break:

Topsy Turvy. The life and times of Gilbert and Sullivan by Mike Leigh. I'm not a big fan of musicals myself, but this actually looks interesting. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

Last Temptation of Christ I've been saving this one for Good Friday. Can't see what the uproar was about in the late eighties since the book that it's based on says that it's a personal reflection on the life of Jesus.

I wonder if there's a DVD community here in Cebu? Maybe I'll ask around tomorrow...

Firewired I saw The Last Temptation Of Christ back in College, and I must say that it's one of the best films I've ever seen. It's one of the films that proved to me Scorcese's dynamism as a director.

Don't believe the hype, it's no more sacreligious than Dogma or even The Cider House Rules. Very apt for the Holy Week.

Hello Phoebus

Thanks for the welcome, i've also rented another set of DVDs: Autumn in New York, Loser, Three Kings, Double Jeopardy (galing!), Iron Giant(gonna collect this one), and Erin Brokovich...

We watched it all through AM to PM 3 disc per day! hahaha...

Ever since I was a kid, Holy Week meant mini-series. I think the tradition started with The Thornbirds.

I guess next year it'll be Horatio Hornblower/Horatio Hornblower: The Adventure Continues.

Plus Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and In The Beginning, to keep the right perspective on the season.

As Holy Week's a little more than a month away, I'm bumping bently's thread up for the benefit of all.

Here's my selection:

That's my selection of movies fit for the Holy Week, we'll probably watch them from Holy Thursday to Black Saturday. I'm interested too in obtaining a copy of "The Ten Commandments", will probably get around to it one of these days. Paging PARC! ;)

thanks escape for bringing back this thread to life :)

i haven't gotten any new dvd's for my holy week viewing,
but i'm interested in getting this 2 dvd's that i haven't seen yet.

Jesus (2000)

Tackling the story of Jesus for film is bound to incur controversy. Yet, in a bold move, CBS produced the television miniseries Jesus, which not only retells the biblical story, but takes a look at the more human side of the man. Jeremy Sisto stars, and although it takes a little while for him to gather enough momentum to have us believing him in this role, overall he is surprisingly convincing. While the movie does stray from strict scripture--Jesus is shown feeling conflicted over his feelings for Lazarus's sister Mary; Satan, portrayed by Jeroen Krabbé, works hard at convincing Jesus to stray from his path--most of the plot will be familiar to viewers. Beginning with an adult Jesus, who works with his father as a carpenter, the program traces his life and death through resurrection. The strong supporting cast, including Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate, and Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene, lends to the credibility of the miniseries. This is a satisfying retelling of the life of Jesus and will please those who want new ways to explore biblical stories, as Jesus not only reinforces the ideals of the New Testament but shows Jesus as a complex individual. --Jenny Brown

The Miracle Maker - The Story of Jesus (2000)  (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004WI56/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20)

This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

You're Welcome, bently! ;D

I happen to own and have seen Jesus (2000)
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1573629235/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20). This is one DVD that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for something in this genre.

Although the script is not as accurate as that of "Jesus of Nazareth" (this is literally the Gospel coming to life) and has taken several "artistic liberties" when it comes to the story of Jesus and Mary (Lazarus' sister), it still is a great rendition of a story updated for our times.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the temptation of Christ by Satan (played by Jeroen Krabbe) is particularly well portrayed and layed out with good special effects, a must see portion.

Same story Rak-Rak but more detailed than Messenger since it's a TV mini-series. The filmmaking is definitely not in the league of Luc Besson, but Sobieski seems like a better Joan of Arc than Jovovich (but that's a personal opinion).

just a funny story to add to this thread...the other day a freind called me up and asked if i had any religious dvds that he can borrow...like jesus christ superstar or the robe?

i was surprised dahil hindi naman siya religious, like he goes to church pag x'mas at easter sunday lang!

so i asked why he wanted to borrow some religious dvd's? dahil ba holy week ngayon?

kasi daw..puros X at XXX ang gumagana sa dvd player niya, and if he played religious dvd's
eh di...mababawasan daw ng kasalanan yung dvd player niya , he said he just want to play the dvd on the player so it can wash out all the sinfull pictures...it doesn't mater if he watches it or not...just as long as it plays on his dvd player ???

so i told him just go and rent a dvd and i would gladly pay for it..dahil baka ano pa ang dumikit sa mga dvd ko.::)

My collection's very new but I think a few of it will suit the Lenten season.  I'll ask my family to join me in watching Ben Hur since only I have seen it yet and maybe The Shawshank Redemption.  I will surely be excited when Easter Sunday comes because by then, I'll be able to select from the rest of my selection w/c I haven't watched yet.  It will either be "ID4" or "Terminator 2" or maybe even "Shrek" to lighten the mood.  What's more, I'm looking forward to finally do my first ever Easter egg hunting in dvds, literally speaking. :)

Ultraviolet. Mini-series that feels like the X-Files except for the vampire-slaying angle. Been waiting for this one for some time.

This Life. TV drama about Brit lawyers. Strong, controversial stuff.

Wow! I thought I was the only one into British series here! I found Ultraviolet very stylish but dragging at some points. I thoroughly enjoyed This Life, and have been waiting for Series 2 on DVD for over a year now! Wala pa rin! :(

For those who posted early... what did you actually end up watching this Holy Week? That may have funny results.

I said I'd watch Horatio Hornblower, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell and In The Beginning.

I ended up watching: The Evil Dead Trilogy  ;D

I'd say " Deathrow" was part of my holy week...
To give up one's life for another echoes what "Jesus's"
passion was all about... I've cried when many of them
wanted to lay their life for the sake of another...
it was a story beyond life itself... I was deeply touched!

well after viewing Veggie Tales the Movie

the movie was able to reach and teach my 4 yr. old daughter great values, like mercy and compassion.
heck i almost fell of my chair when i heard my daughter sing " let's praise the lord"... over and over again! :o

so this got me interested in the series.
and after reading all the positive reviews in amazon's customers review section on the veggie tales dvd series.

i went ahead and bought some more veggie tales dvd's.

heres some of them:
(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000089QG3.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000089QG3/ref=pd_sim_dv_2/)(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00007G1ZS.01._PE15_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007G1ZS/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_3/)(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000069I1P.01._PE13_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000069I1P/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/)(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000069I1M.01._PE10_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000069I1M/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_f/)

these dvd's would be appropriate for the holy week, but i'm sure my daughter will be veiwing them again and again throughout the year  :D

almost forgot, theres also a $10CAD off $75CAD coupon floating around, check bargainflix.com or dvdpricesearch.com for the coupon.

now, going back to the main topic,
i highly recommend seeing this dvd

(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000067IX4.01._PE10_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000067IX4/qid%3D1050417115/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/)
Lauryn Hill - MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 (2002)

this is not your average concert dvd, laura hill really connects with her heart felt songs, it had me teary eyed as she wept through her songs. her music and poetry was truly self reflecting.

heres a review from amazon.com
Lauryn Hill bleeds her heart out to everyone through this DVD. She inspires, motivates, and perpetuates inner thought. When watching this performance, one walks out feeling rejuvinated and re-evaluates society and your place in it. Inner demons seemed to haunt Lauryn Hill but obviously overcomes the tragedy of love, life, and forgiveness with oneself. She emates from what is raw and pure emotion which she uses her amazingly- beautiful rapsy voice and her acustic guitar. The music is only secondary as the message is the most thought- provoking passages I have encountered. Her performance of "I Gotta Find A Peace of Mind" is mind- altering, heart- dropping poetry of issues that we all deal with. Towards the end of the song, she cries and pours all her energy so she can get her point accross. The audience is left in tears as well as it is the most incredible sight one can be part of. Please, whether on MTV or through this DVD, just watch it and you will see a strong woman who overcomes everything and still can stand strong in the light of day.

heck, you don't even have to see this on dvd, if you can get a hold of a tape or cd...listen to it, it's well worth your time.  ;)

Spider-man !

A very religious movie. Think about it. It was Peter Parker's guilt (Catholic guilt) that drove him to become a hero or super samaritan. If he had stepped in to stop that thief, then his uncle would still be alive.

That guilt, not the spider bite, made him what he is.

Of course, i'm just justifying my choice of flick for the holy week. (Har !)

My Holy Week line-up for 2006:

Passion of the Christ
Titanic
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
King Kong 2005

Passion is an obvious choice. For the other 3, I just felt that something in those movies make them worth a Holy Week watch. I can't just seem to place it.

Taking a breather from Passion of the Christ this Lent after 2 Good Fridays (2005 & 2006). This year I'll punish myself by watching Fellowship of the Ring for the nth time this Good Friday. Actually, only my 3rd on DVD but I've watched it in VHS and HBO for so many times already. I can even imagine each character's facial expression for every line they deliver. Still contemplating if I'll complete the trilogy this Holy Weekend.

Yey! A chance to finish up my backlog:

1. Letters from Iwo Jima/Flags of our Fathers (in that order)
2. 2046
3. Apocalypto
4. The Exorcist (the version you've never seen)
5. Jaws
6. 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
7. Sunshine
8. Dog Day Afternoon

Will probably only finish half of that playlist on the long weekend  ;D

Doesn't have to be movies related to the season so I'll probably be watching Neil Simon's THE GOODBYE GUY for the nth time to make me feel good inside. I've watched this before during Christmas eve (2004), why not this season as well?

- MATRIX TRILOGY (HD-DVD)
- ALEXANDER - Revisited (HD-DVD)
- and then some

... season-related : INDESCRIBABLE DVD (by Loiue Giglio)

Cheers!!!

panoorin ko rin siya...

gusto ko sa movie kung paano ipinakita ang pagpapahirap...

medyo malapit sa description ng Bible na

"He had no form or comeliness that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him."

halos hindi na makilala ang mukha sa dami nang mga sugat...
He endured all the pains in exchange of our life...

I recall watching this with my late father sa Channel 9 yata in the late 70s.  I've been trying to find any clear version but could only get The Miracle Worker and The Ten Commandments.

brader pao!!!! nanonood ka pala nyan?!  ;D ::)

The Passion of The Christ is a tad too heavy for me. It's still "The Redeemer" for me.

i used to have "The Greatest Story Ever Told". however, i "lost" it even before i could view it. and now, i'll be asking my sister to buy "Jesus of Nazareth" for me.  :P
