Title: What program do you use to keep track of your DVD collection?
Post by: Phobos on Mar 26, 2001 at 06:24 PM
I used to subscribe to DVDTracker but it was too expensive for me so I switched to DVDProfiler (http://www.dvdprofiler.com/dvdpro/index.html).

Although it lacks some features that DVDTracker has (separating "Wish List" titles from your "Owned titles"), it's free and it's very easy to use.

What do you guys use?

I use DVDProfiler because it's free, plus it has its own software!  Cool interface, and it even displays the image of the front and back of the dvd case.

Phoebus, the DVD Profiler software has a separate list for wish list, owned, and ordered.  Are you referring to a web-based version of it?
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?
Post by: Phobos on Mar 27, 2001 at 01:59 AM
flyderman Yup. I was referring to the web based version.

I had to remove all the titles from my Wish List so that the web based version would be easier to understand. Is there a way separate the wish list titles from the owned titles in the web based version?

DVDTracker for me! I started using it when it was still a free service. When they began charging $10 a year though, I was lucky enough to be one of the existing users that they sent out surveys to, and those who filled it up got a free year's service. When the term's up, I probably will pay the $10 dues as I think the interface is a lot cleaner than DVDProfiler's.

Hello Guys!

I've been reading a lot about these trackers and catalogs from other DVD forums. How does it work? How does it benefit you?  Thanks...
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?
Post by: Phobos on Mar 27, 2001 at 09:24 PM
Komikero, Simply put, trackers/catalogs help you to keep track of your dvd collection. They help you organize your titles under categories such as "Loaned", "Owned", "Ordered" & "Wishlist".

Some catalogs also publish your collection on the web so you can share your collection with your friends. (Good way of hinting to your friends about what titles you do or don't need).

The following thread is an example of published collections by use of trackers:

Phoebus,  I haven't tried the web-based version of DVDProfiler yet.  But since I'm planning to put my list online, I'll go and try it out sometime.  Let me get back to you on that.

I don't use one :) My collections is not that many anyway... around 70-80, I guess. But I think I'll check out PROFILER cause it's FREE :)
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?

LokeyMD You own more DVDs than I do and I still need DVDProfiler to keep track of all my discs! ;D

You have to go to their site and download the software. It would really make your life easier.

)

Check out this

It looks good, it has the feature that's missing from DVDProfiler (separate "Owned" titles from "Wishlist" titles) and so far it's free! Thanks.

What is lacking here is a good online help function for newbies. I had a lot of figuring out to do in order to add titles to my list.

Phoebus, if you modify a DVD's info in DVD tracker, does that change its info on the database located on the website (like a contributor?) or the modification is just limited to your particular collection ???

Thanks.

You may have received an e-mail from the DVDAficionado webnmaster explaining whey they are down.  Anyway, I think he said they will be down for about 2-3 weeks.
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?
Post by: Phobos on Apr 27, 2001 at 05:27 PM
viper I'm assuming you're talking about DVD Profiler? The changes only get reflected in their database when you upload your modified DVD profiles to their database and if they approve of it. If not, it only affects your local profiles.

Mondavi Hello and welcome to PinoyDVD! Yup, I got that email as well. In the meantime I've been tracking my purchases with DVDProfiler. It's not that fun since I think DVDAficionado is better and easier to use than DVDProfiler. 2 weeks is a long time man!
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?

Just uploaded my collection to DVDProfiler. Now, if I can edit the region codes without affecting the master dbase...hmmm ???
Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?
Post by: Phobos on Apr 30, 2001 at 07:14 AM
viper I don't think you'll be affecting the master database unless you use the Contribute DVD Profile function. Besides, if I'm not mistaken, they screen the profile contributions before updating the database.

Good news to all subscribers of DVDaficionado! It's back online (or at least partially).

The www.dvdaficionado.com url is still not working though. It should be fully operational in a few days.

Meantime, we can access our collection by entering this IP address in our browsers:

I used MS Access for my LD Collection and it was a natural progression to use it for my DVD Collection.

I simplified the fields to Title, 3 Actors, Director, Purchase Date, Price, Region.

Still have to look more closely at online trackers.

in the meantime, i use DVDaficionado.com

Well that approximates how I fix my most recently acquired DVDs:  according to when I bought them.  The most recently acquired DVDs go to one end of the row on the shelf.  This is my method while I figure out how the hell I am going to arrange everything!?  ???  There are 5 different places where I store my DVDs and I am running out of space!!!

Title: Re: What Do You Use To Catalog Your DVDs?

Something like...

I bought this DVD at the time when I was feeling blue in October 1999...This DVD I bought with my boyfriend at a sale during a big thunderstorm in November 2000...Something like that. Saw this in the movie "High Fidelity" where the main character was compiling his Vinyl collections, autobiographically. ;) Can't explain it really well here.  :-/

So you have alphabetically, by actors/director, or by categories.  This one just complicates it but there's a meaning behind the way you compile your stuff.....

I catalogue my dvd collection in my pocketpc using the software Listpro. I divide them into the following categories: 'Already have', 'On their way', 'to buy', and 'to research'. I also have a sub-directory for some titles I have on vhs.

I also have a synched copy of this file in my office pc (which I can stare at for hours during those times when I have nothing to do  ;)).

Yeah it free, just download it from the web.   But for premium service you have to pay a membership fee, but honestly the value added services is not necessary, like the higher resolution DVD cover feature for premium members, you can get the covers from a different source anyway and better you can scan it yourself.

dati Excel lang.  ngayon Excel and DVD Profiler.

with DVD Profiler:
- you know all the features of your DVDs
- easter eggs
- front and back cover images
- filters
- audio tracks, subtitles, cast, synopsis, etc.
- a lot more...

I'm the one who submitted the profiles for both Tanging Yaman and American Adobo. I've submitted other Star Cinema titles like Dekada '70 and Anak, but for some reason or other, they didn't get accepted.

Can't submit the VIVA titles, since the locally purchased ones don't have UPC numbers.

hi Mr. Big Boy!
check out your spelling.  Forest Gump is spelled as Forrest Gump, with a double r  ;)
I also had the same problem adding my Seven Platinum Series DVD coz I was trying to search for 'Seven'. When i tried Se7en, with a 7 in the middle, it worked!  ;D

Also, when adding new released titles, make sure you click on the'Refresh Online List from IVS' button to update the title list.

Hope this helps!  :D

LOL, talagang, lousy speller ako ever since.  But I don't think that matters at all, because when I type the title sa box field di ko na binubuo.  For... pa lang dapat nakikita ko na ung title sa Data field kaso di ko makita.  Maybe my DVD Profiler database got corrupted.

Thanks anyway.  ;D

I don't have a problem with DVD Profiler whatsoever & when you add new DVDs, it automatically updates the Online Profile List from IVS anyway. You should also update the profiles right after downloading a new profile list. Am not sure if I have the latest version, which is 2.1 but I know this is better from the previous version.  8)

I use DVD Profiler. Instead of having to type in the 80+ titles I have so far, I am lucky enough to own a CueCat (a bardcode scanner that RadioShack (US) used to give away) so I just scan the barcodes  :)

I believe I uploaded the Dekada '70 profile. Di pa nga complete ang information kasi nag-e-error nung inuupload na but defnitely yung image ng cover ako yun  :)

i hope not din... but i have been using DVD profiler for 2 years and mukhang kaunti lang ang nag-a-advertise sa kanila. so i'm guessing the ads aren't a big revenue for them.

BTW, do you guys contribute? i noticed kasi i have to "invent" UPC codes for R3 editions and scan the covers myself... sometimes they accept... minsan they don't.

it might be a BIG help if you guys can post the UPC codes you use for the approved contributions. it'd save all of us a lot of time and effort.  ;D

All the time. I've never invented a UPC code, though. Among all the local Tagalog titles I've contributed, only TANGING YAMAN was accepted, and I still don't know why - I didn't do anything differently.

Not a big surprise, you'll find a HUGE number of "TV Series on DVD" titles were submitted by me.  ;D

but isn't UPC code required? only way you get away without a UPC code is the DiscID... and you need a DVD-ROM for that.  ;)

i tried contributing 3 dvd titles (with scans) and i didn't get that error message anymore.

DVDProfiler. I particularly like the "wish list" feature that sort of lets me "organize" my future acquisitions, hehe.. I'm particularly excited about the newer version that's due to come out soon, though intervocative hasn't given any release date yet and it will initially be available to premium registrants only.. I hope the freebie won't take to long to follow though  ;D

You can try this one, wherein you have the option to enter the data for your collection (including pictures) manually offline or acquire them once you're online using the scripts. You can then browse your collection at your own leisure without being connected to the net/ ;)

I'm tinkering with a freeware program Ant Movie Catalog 3 (http://www.antp.be/index.php?l=uk&z=5&c=3&s=1). Anybody who tried this already?

  • Import information from Internet (using scripts); by default it includes scripts for IMDB (US), Allociné (FR), DVDZone2 (FR), Monsieur Cinéma (FR), Culturalia (ES), OFDb (DE), Port.hu (HU), ...
  • User-customizable links to do a search on movie websites
  • Information importation from avi/divx files (audio & video codec, bitrates, resolution, framerate, size)

Scripting technology, using Object Pascal language, allowing to modify catalog: Find & replace, moving field values, ...

Actually, I also use the ever trusty, ever reliable notebook and pen.  This is much more accurate coz you don't need to turn on your computer to write your new acquisitions down.  It is a bit messy (well ... it really depends on your handwriting  ;D) but at least you can write them down as soon as you get it. cherubrock, there is a newer version of Profiler and its for the "non-payers." You just need to go to intervocative and download it for free. Had the same problem but was immediately remedied after I got the newer 2.3.1 version.

guys instead of downloading your lists from the net... there is a backup function within dvdprofiler itself.

before i upgraded... i backed-up my list to a dpb file. it will save EVERYTHING... notes, prices bought, dates, etc. etc. even covers. (which is handy if you scan your own covers para mas hi-res.) just make sure you u check both "include cover scans" & "full user database"...

you can now uninstall the old verion then run a fresh installation of the new one. once done... just "restore" your list using the "restore function"... it's really easy... quick too. ;)

and the only internet time you'll need is to download the installer and update the database. ;)

Hi SPiFF! Musta na? Like jeckjeck, mine just installed over the new one, and it works fine. But if that doesn't work out for some, couldn't they just upload their existing collections, uninstall the previous version, download and install the new version, and download his online collection from the site? But if that doesn't work out for some, couldn't they just upload their existing collections, uninstall the previous version, download and install the new version, and download his online collection from the site? Hmm.. binabasa ko pa lang parang mas complicated nga, hehe.. ;D

hey rocky! i'm great... thanks for asking!  ;D

the method i explained is really easy to do and ideal should any hiccup happen during the installation of the new version (leaving you with a faulty version installed... ya never know right?) ... OR if for some reason your PC'c contents will be wiped out (like if you got a new PC or just reformated the hard drive of your old one.)

personally, i prefer to uninstall old versions and just do a fresh install of new ones. it's just a habit i picked up noon pa. i think it keeps your system registry and stuff more clean that way.

i keep a lot of notes on my entries plus i keep the original hi-res scans of the titles i submit (para mas maganda) so that method was perfect for me ... made the mistake once of not locking some titles before (gladiator R3 and strictly ballroom R1-canada) and ayun, na-overwrite yung ini-scan ko with the lower resolution version of the scans i submitted. :(

I'm not sure if this topic already exists in any of the forums, but i'm looking for the best way to keep track of my DVDs, very similar to VideoList Plus.

Here are my personal requirements:

1. it has to be a software/program than can be used on a PC/laptop(of course)

2. better if it can also be used/hotsynced with my PDA (PalmOS5)

3. it should have all the info I need; from title, region, edition, length, lead & supporting actors, producer, movie company, director, aspect ratio, price, acquired from, year made, genre, language, subtitles, PAL/NTSC, DTS, DD, THX, etc..

A database from MS Access will do (if anyone can send me a set format na) ;D
Or a cracked program (oops, pwede ba to?)

hoping for your quick response... thanks in advance

What is your recommended DVD Listing application for PDAs?

I downloaded and tried several applications / databases.  I ended up making one on SmartList To Go.

I use dvdspot.com (http://dvdspot.com/).. it's fairly easy to use and you can track your dvds online...

you can catalog your dvds according to what you own.. what you've watched.. wishlists..ordered lists.. loaned dvds...

in your front page, you can even see how much is the retail value of your dvds and compare to how much you actually paid for them (tho you have to convert to dollars)

it also has stats on which director is on most of your dvds etc...

try it!!!!!!!!

Yes pjayg dvdspot.com has both import and export features using the basic .txt files or .csv :D

I suggest you try the site.. if they don't have your title, you can just add the title and you'll be given a spot contributor ticket if approved  ;D

Wow this is a nice thread.  Am old-school so I've been using Excel as a simple log-sheet with five vertical columns - Title/Region/Source/Ownership/Price.  Sobrang simple lang but it works for me.  Galing nung mga applications which were mentioned here, will try them out.  Even putting your archives on line - sure there would be trade-offs (accumulation of user-data), but you do benefit from it as well so why not.  Thanks for the posted 'tools.'  ;)

You can use Delicious Library 2 http://delicious-monster.com (http://delicious-monster.com), been using it since version 1.5. You can scan your dvd UPC code to a webcam, it will fetch the info directly from Amazon. Problem lang if your dvd is local, you have to type the title para search ng delicious library the correct dvd info. No problems with warner dvd R3, scanner works fine. Medyo expensive nga lang around $40, pero if you have a massive library sobrang useful to. They're developing an iphone app para pwede mo na rin dalhin library mo anywhere.

Kahit books, apparel, toys, gadget, videogames, cd's kasama sa app. You can also add your friends para ma-track mo mga borrowers. Integrated na rin to your ical para ma-remind ka if it's overdue already.

Here's the screenshot of my library:

Me, too. But I have 13 columns :)

No. of discs; Title; Audio (s/dd/dts); Video (fs/ws/anamorphic); Region; Location (where to find); NTSC/PAL; Year; Length; Genre; Date of Purchase; Where Purchased; Price

Just discovered an iPhone app for this.

It's called iCollectMovies (http://www.icollectmedia.com/). You get to back up the data in your iPhone to the web, just in case.

The great thing about it is that you just scan the bar code of the DVD and it will automatically fetch the data. Not 100% though, siguro 50-60% lang ang success rate. I noticed this to be so especially in C-Interactive and Viva DVDs. Dunno the technology for the bar codes, so I'm guessing it's not the same for every region. My theory is the support is mostly for US bar codes.

If the barcode thing doesn't work, you can search through the database.
