Title: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: AshKetchum on Dec 15, 2005 at 06:57 PM
Coming this February 2006: 5 continents, 60,000 miles, and 11 teams of 2--it's the return of the "regular" Amazing Race.

From the preview seen so far: a team of nerds, and a team of kikay girls?
Please, please, please--no more other reality show asswipes like Rob & Amber; let there be newer, unfamiliar asswipes this time.

lagi rin akong nanonood nito..meron na naman akong aabangan na favorite... sana dalas dalasan naman nila ang mga season nila o kaya gawing sabay ang season ng family at regular edition o kaya dalawang edition bawat season. very informative pa

I'm guessing February 28, 10AM on Studio 23 for us?

Antok na ako nung nag-post.  ;D

From the bios alone, I'm guessing Lisa & Joni will be first eliminated.  ::)

Isang tulog na lang!  ;D

Anyone seen ads on Studio 23? The front page of their website says 10:00AM, but their schedule grid on the same website says 9:00AM. Although I'm guessing it's 10:00... has anyone seen actual plugs on the station to confirm?

is it just me or does anyone else think that it feels like i'm watching a movie with stereotypical characters ala THE RAT RACE? most TAR contestants this season are of stereotypical personalities: the frat boys, the hippies, the geeky couple, the barbie dolls, etc...  ;D

casting usually involves getting stereotypical people naman... no big surprise there... there's the parent-child team, the gay team, the best friends team, the "war of the roses" team, etc. etc.

that has always been the formula for most reality shows... if everyone was "boring" and "normal", there'd be no dynamic.  :P

no problem with the teams. but what i meant, though, was sobrang stereotypical ung characteristics ng bawat team (most of them anyway). parang hinugot sa isang pelikula.

No fave team yet but interesting teams would be the hippies (BJ & Tyler), the nerds, mother-daughter, and Lake & Michelle.

Lake reminds me of the Schroeder dad.

They really try to cast these shows looking for specific character types. The better you fit into the specific type, the bigger your chance of getting cast.

I like the mix of characters, but I still feel that extending the pilot episode to two hours makes it less exciting. But at least it NOT "Family Edition".  :)

the geeky girl reminds me of someone from a movie or a tv program. i just can't put my finger on it- the glasses, the ponytail, the blue shirt, the eye twitching.  it's so surreal that i felt that the character was brought to life...  ::)

Post by: AshKetchum on Mar 02, 2006 at 11:17 AM
interesting mix of characters this time around:

- mother and daughter team are ok, but i don't like the mom, she seems like a hyperactive beyotch to me.  ;D

- lake and wife--i can't stand their accents, it's like they're TV sitcom characters or something.

- the nerds are ok, but i get annoyed (or cringe) everytime the girl asks for a kiss from the guy.

- barbie & ken, i don't like them.

- frosties, ok at first, but all that screeching towards the end irritated me.

- the hippies are great, they seem to be having the most fun than anyone, and they're funny too.

sayang the gay duo were eliminated--they could've provided some funny, snarky moments later on.

Tuned in at 10am and thought I missed it.

Go, Team Hippies!

I'm ecstatic that the ones eliminated deserved it. They were long due since last week. Too bad this couldn't be The Apprentice that two teams could be sent home. Good riddance! No more annoying shriekers. They were complaining and whining throughout the race. If they're not, they're still grating.

Fran and Barry are also a team that's waiting to be sent home although I admire their perseverance.

I think yesterday's was the most boring episode ever...and it seemed the shortest episode as well. It looks like all they did was climb a fire escape, rappel down, then do the roadblock with the waterfall/sugar cane press.

At least there was hardly a bunching and the order of the teams were according to skill and competitiveness. I like the top 6 teams especially Wanda + Desiree!
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Mar 15, 2006 at 11:34 PM
It was a fun show this week. I just hated the bunching the airport, since it made the over three hour time difference of first to last place (as well as the three separate bus departure times to the airport) complete moot.

About 10 minutes before the end, I already sensed something was fishy, since no one had arrived at the pit stop yet. So the "surprise ending" didn't really catch me off guard.

Why is it that when the screen time is with Dave and Lori, the geek team, the music in the background sounds loony?

I'm enjoying Season 9 so far. I like the way Phil is mocking the fratboys, and they seem too dense to even notice!

Didn't you guys think the greeter guy at the pit stop looked exactly like the Travelocity Gnome the contestants were carrying?

I felt bad about which team was eliminated, though. They were one of my favorite teams this season. They were like Nancy & Emily Lite. Although when Desiree started crying during the Roadblock, you knew which parent she got that from!  ;D

I cannot believe that the prize for coming in First in this round highlighted "Duracell Batteries."  ;D

I think this is the first time the Yield actually got a team eliminated. I really don't understand why they chose to use the Yield on the team they knew was right behind them instead of the one that still hadn't arrived. That would've been a much safer option if they were just using the Yield as insurance that they wouldn't come in last.

After the past two eliminations... the Eye Candy is now down to one.

Lake & Michelle = dimwitted rednecks. They remind me of cartoon characters, I just can't exactly remember who.

Sayang, if they did this then Ray & Yolanda would've been eliminated. Those two are just meh, plus Yolanda looks like the bastard child of Michelle Rodriguez and Maria of Sesame Street.  ;D

Aww... the Philippines' loss is Oz' gain, at least. They're lucky to have you!  :)

Strange that Third World countries can get "live" American Idol feeds but Oz can't. I wonder if it has something to do with the success of Oz Idol - maybe it's a rights thing like what happened with Pinoy Big Brother not being on TFC in the States despite American BB not being on the air.

**********

Warning:

CBS has just moved The Amazing Race in the States from Tuesdays at 10:00PM to Wednesdays at 8:00PM. Considering that and the fact that DST starts this weekend in the States, our Studio 23 Live Feed should now be on Thursdays at 8:00AM.

Set your VCRs/DVRs accordingly.  :)

I don't think Lake & Michelle realized that Ray & Yolanda (who got lost while driving) were also behind them. They looked like they made the decision on the assumption that they were the last 2 teams on that leg.
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: AshKetchum on Mar 31, 2006 at 04:51 PM
^^I think that as each team arrives and passes the Yield point, the TAR producers remove their team pictures, so they can't be used anymore.
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Apr 03, 2006 at 05:35 PM
I did a little online investigating. It turns out that the pictures in the Yield box are NOT removed when teams have passed. You only know how many teams are behind you with a counter. Unless you actually see a team trailing you, you really don't know who's behind you. So Lake & Michelle's Yield decision makes more sense now.

What I still don't get was why Fran & Barry were that mean to Lake & Michelle. It was okay to be secretive with them when it involved booking an earlier flight, but not to help a team out when you're about to step on the mat at the Pitstop while they're only trying to make their way to the Roadblock is just - nasty. I suppose they're just showing us the beginnings of this season's "great feud."

Do you guys visit Survivor Sucks? I thought the earlier pictures of the hippies and fratboys were just shots of them messing around, but then the third picture turned up. Okay, I didn't see that one coming!  ;D

The animosity might have stemmed from the detour involving the assembly of motorbikes in Brazil. Lake offered to help the seniors once he assembled his team's but he ended up hurrying towards the next task. Fran was expecting a step-by-step then when she should have observed Lake closely while he was doing his. Fran and Barry are good at navigating but their downfall could be their relatively weaker physical prowess.

Haven't gone to that site yet. Mapuntahan nga.

Did anyone else find today's episode boring?

I mean - counting heads? Carrying fish? And playing a game where your supposed "competition" was actually handing you the ball to give you a chance to shoot it?

The only thing I found funny about the episode was... Phil Keoghan dancing at the Pitstop.  ;D

One more thing: It's been the same teams in the top two places for too long already. For the first time since the series started, I actually WANT an Equalizer really soon, to make the final outcome of each round less predictable.

He knew it'd be a boring episode so he danced.  ;D

Too bad for the nerds but this season has been about competitiveness. Ray and Yolanda are fiercer than them. The rest of the teams are really stronger; however, the first two teams have more wits than the other four teams.

Maybe they should go to China. The cab drivers there will really make the race unpredictable. I'm looking forward to Greece though.

Holy Week Alert:

Due to local customs, Studio 23 will not be signing on until 9:55AM this Thursday, so the FIRST broadcast of this week's installment of The Amazing Race will be on April 13, Maundy Thursday, at 6:00PM on Studio 23.

I found it very weird that Lake & Michelle were eliminated, since there have been 7 episodes (including one two-part leg), and there are now only five racers left. So...

What happened to the "non-elimination" legs? Normally, there would've been two by now!

While watching the show, it really felt like a non-elimination leg, so the ending surprised me. I wonder if those have been removed from the game?

Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Apr 18, 2006 at 09:55 AM
Oh right. That was the season with two consecutive non-elimination rounds, which tricked Jon Vito & Jill into going after the Fast Forward uselessly and saved Flo from elimination. Got confused there, sorry. Though that was the season with 12 teams, so on that edition, they actually also removed one of the non-elimination rounds.
Title: The Amazing Race 9

Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: AshKetchum on Apr 19, 2006 at 12:44 PM
With Lake & Michelle gone, the boring, predictable stereotypes remain, with the exception of the hippies:

Joseph & Monica - boring, predictable caucasian couple
Ray & Yolanda - boring, predictable black couple
Fran & Barry - boring, predictable old couple
Eric & Jeremy - boring, predictable alpha-male types

Only BJ and Tyler have character--if they go, then it will be the most boring, predictable final four ever.  :P
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 9
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Apr 20, 2006 at 08:55 PM
I don't know. The hippies already annoy me. They're constantly mugging for the cameras, "Look at us! We're the funniest team ever!" I would've rather had last week as the non-elimination leg. It's more fun when there's a volatile male in a couple in the race. Lake's tantrums and how his wife handled them were amusing. I enjoyed the hippies' impression of him. Spot on. Luckily, Ray showed a mini meltdown tonight, and Joseph seems to have a bigger one next week. So Lake's spirit lives on!  ;D

But the fratboys annoy me even more than the hippies. I've never seen a less likeable alpha male team. I don't like Fran and Barry, but I was happy when they came in first, since finally, they showed those fratboys that it takes more than just speed and agility to make it to #1. A lesson in humility nga, with the oldest team coming in first. Their navigational skills really impress me. I'm nowhere near that good with a map.

Of the remaining teams, I'd like Joseph and Monica to win. Although unlike previous races, I really don't care if they don't.

Meredith and Gretchen (69 & 66) of TAR 7 made it to the Final Four, and they are older than Fran and Barry (61 & 63). But I don't remember them arriving at the Pit Stop in first place during any leg - though I may be wrong.

Hehe... actually, kakapanood ko lang nung DVD ng Season 7, kaya ko sila naalala.

Interesting commentaries. Binanggit ni Rob (of Rob & Amber) na may style na siyang naisip para hindi makuha lahat ng damit pag last place sa non-elimination round. Sabi ni Amber, don't say what it is - so they can use it daw in the All-Star Edition.

Kailan kaya yung All-Star Edition? They're already accepting applicants for The Amazing Race 11 (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race_application/), so not in the next year, apparently.

Good riddance to Fran and Barry. Now, the race is really on. I hope all this bickering among MoJo, Hippies, and EJ will benefit Ray and Yolanda. Bitchin'!

what are you talking about....@61 years old.it was "the amazing race"!saka dinaya pa nga sila dahil  kajit nagpareserve na sila ng taxi, kinuha pa rin nung isang team.fran and barry raced fairly, they even gave money to the hippies.hello?!and the show were not adjusting to them at all, they raced just like with any other team.again,at 60 something,it was an amazing race...wait till you reach that age and tell me about it...... :D

Post by: Reuven Malter on Apr 27, 2006 at 10:02 PM
Fran and Barry were impressive last week but they didn't stand a chance once the challenges became more physical. MoJo did not get their taxi. The cab driver was calling out for Joseph. Fran and Barry may be more competitive than Meredith and Gretchen (S7) but the latter still holds the record for the longer-lasting senior couple. Although they never reached first... Fran and Barry is also the oldest team to reach first without using a FF. The air traffic controllers and Teri and Ian came in first in previous seasons but they both used the FF.

Fran and Barry used to be my sentimental faves but they just became too whiny later on. Come on, they often miss the clue box. On this episode, they also gave us too much information about their sex life.  ;D

This week's episode soundes interesting:

Man, They Should've Used Their Fake Names

The teams travel to Darwin, Australia, and must wade through a crocodile-infested pool to retrieve a clue. Later, a member of each team must tandem skydive with an expert. Also, one duo cancels all the other teams' waiting cabs.

Whoa! I thought Rob and Amber weren't on the show this season? I'm wondering who's scummy enough to do something like that???

(I'm guessing it's the hippies.)

Nail-biting episode. Full of drama and suspense. A lot of karmic collisions. I'm ecstatic about Ray and Yolanda's first-place finish. Good thing they did not figure in the squabble. Ray and Yolanda snap at each other but the rest of the teams are nasty to one another. The scheming is right up there with Team Guido and Romber. The hippies have tied the record of Don and Mary Jean for consecutive penalties by finishing last. Also best race to the mat since Brian and Greg beat Ray and Deanna. Nothing beats the TAR2 finale though, I heard. Still have to see that.

True. Overtaken during the final sprint to the Finish Line!

Exciting and satisfying ending for me. I love when the use of the Yield leads to such results, since as a "purist" who's stuck with the show since Day One, I still think the Yield was a bad addition to the game. Before the Yield, it was simple: As long as you outplay the others and have a bit of luck (with taxis and those "needle-in-a-haystack" challenges), you will win. You cannot lose as long as you're the best players. The Yield now makes it possible for that to happen. It lowered the game to the level of "Survivor," where it's not necessarily survival of the fittest.

Oh yeah... worst "coming in first" prize EVER. A car you can use for one year... and then they'll take it away from you. LOL!

I'd rather get the Kodak Easy Share camera... or even the Duracell batteries...  ;D

Sirs,
I don't know if it's just me, but have they taken out the rule regarding Roadblocks wherein one member of the team is supposed to perform not more than five Roadblock tasks at the duration of the race?  I know, it's been taken out last season with regards to a four-member team in the Family Edition.  But everytime the Roadblock comes into play in the show this season, I was kinda waiting for Phil to say that particular ruling, but do not hear it, or is it totally discarded?  Please help! :-\

At least it's better than winning nothing which happened to most non-Romber pairs in TAR 7.  ;D

Interesting observation. Never noticed it. Have not heard it brought up in other forums as well.

Another victory for the underdog! I'm so happy for Ray and Yolanda beating MoJo for that last spot to the finals. Focusing on another teams does not help focus on the race. Reminiscent of Team Guido, MoJo just wasted their lead.

The major problem for me with reality shows this season is that I can't stand any of the front runners on the shows - the fratboys are smarmy and irritating, Terry from Survivor is an arrogant bastard, and American Idol's Taylor Hicks seems like he's in dire need of a neurology consult for his spasms.

So I'm rooting for the least irritating players on all three shows. In this case: Go, Ray & Yolanda!  ;D

They're saving the last non-elimination leg and the final leg on next week's two-hour finale??  I wish they could've just put an elimination leg as the penultimate leg.  I guess, seeing somebody lose all their money, "except the clothes on their back" is exciting to them na rin! sheesh! :-\

Hippies.

I was chuckling every time they'd flash, "Ray & Yolanda - Currently In Last Place," since upon arrival in Japan... that's where they always were, anyway.  ;D

YES!!!!! The hippies WON!! At least my TV viewing day ended on a high note. I was bummed out the whole day because of Elliott's elimination from AI, at least medyo naka bawi ng  konti with the hippies winning.

At least, they got something from the Family Edition. Ma Weaver and Pa Bransen's challenge was that nail-biting then that they had to recreate a similar challenge before the finale this time. Brains over brawn.  ;D That beats eating a pizza anytime.

That leg in Japan was great, made even better by Tyler's knowledge of Japanese. Is this the first time they did a TAR leg in Japan?

I'm really happy the hippies won--first time a team I rooted from the start won.  8)

A bit OT, but did any of you know that Reichen is now Lance Bass's boyfriend? Apparently, Reichen's been proclaiming their love all over his blog. Hahahahaha.

Oh wow, I thought that was internet gossip, but apparently, Lance Bass is so in love with Reichen that he's coming out in People magazine next week:

lance looks hella weird in that cover. LOL.
