Title: What Were The Very First DVDs That You Owned?
Post by: benny on Apr 12, 2001 at 04:08 PM: I remember the 1st dvd I bought was Les Miserables - In Concert, got from Reel. I think I even paid full price for it (about $20) but got a shipping rebate from Brandsforless.

Anyone remember what your first dvd purchase was? where you bought it? and how much you paid? :)

The Matrix (Jump-started my interest in DVD)
Ronin (De Niro rulez!)
Lost in Space (mainly interested on Apollo 4-14's video and music) :)

All Region 1 bought around November 1999...English Films Shop, Zurich, Switzerland...$80+ total

It was the first time I ever tried out what DVD was all about and I was pretty much blown away. Several audio tracks? Making of featurettes? Hidden features? Unbelievably clear picture and interactive menus? It was all new to me and I couldn't believe they fit it all in just one small disc. I knew then that I was hooked. Hooked Bad.

Both really important for me because a) Boogie Nights is a movie I love to death, and when I saw the superior quality of DVD to LD and the bonus features, I was sold; and b) getting The City of Lost Children made me realize what an opportunity it was to get rare movies on DVD. ;D

I was in Price Club in the US where I bumped into a cheapy Shawshank Redemption (well, not that cheapy anymore because the R3 is sooo cheap). It's one of my favorite movies (#3 at the imdb... you can't go wrong :)) It's not wussy for a man to cry :'( hehe

Post by: gonz on Apr 13, 2001 at 06:28 AM: Like many others, my first DVD was an R3 copy of The Matrix. Which caused me problems when I failed to hack the regional coding on my iMac DV, and got stuck on Region 1 for good.

Lucky for me, my friend had a Region 1 copy of The Matrix, and since he has a multi-region player he agreed to swap discs with me.

The X-Files Movie was the 2nd DVD I bought. The next two were Aliens and The Usual Suspects.

Actually, I had my first DVD player before this was released, but I used it mainly for pirated VCDs which I used to buy off the streets of Hong Kong. First 2 VCDs I ever viewed on my player were The Mummy and Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels - the latter being such a lousy hack job that it was missing the last 10 minutes.

Now I have a DVD player, it was worth the wait and my collection will still grow.

Alas! Astrovision don't have it anymore.

Im really satisfied with that film specially "the Shooting at the lobby" it sounds great! :o;D

I also got COral Sea Dreaming to make my TV into an electronic aquarium. Though its far from a real aquarium but at least no hassles and cost of maintaining an aquarium, especially during brownouts or leaving the house for a vacation. Plus it features aquamarine lifeforms that you would not or cannot place in your acquarium. :)

My first DVD though was Matrix (R3) which came in free with my first DVD player. 8)

Since you asked, I DON'T have a copy of The Matrix.

It got so "used up" , it played on HBO for weeks, been used too much as a "demo disc" at audio/video stores, etc..

I lost interest. But if somebody gives it for free, I'll take it ;D But spend for it? NO.

After buying my player...I immediately got The Matrix DVD and watched it immediately. Me and my wife were at awe when we heard and saw what kind of pictures and sound a dvd produces. You see...it was our first time to actually watch a dvd. It was very exciting!!! ;D ;D In our family...I was the second one to get a dvd player besides my bro who's in the STates.

Ill be watching out for the Matrix sequels!! ;D ;D ;D 8) 8)

bought it from a Chinoy in GreenHills... medyo mahal nga benta nung guy na yun...buti na lang andyan na si Charbit ;D

Hi xlr8,

Isn't Jessica the best? I must admit that most of the movies I collect were based on her reviews. She makes fun reviews. Not snobbish nor tight-assed.

The first DVD I bought, technically, was Jawbreakers. I got it "free" with the Philips DVD player. Not very Zafra-esque huh? Tried to get rid of this disc but I couldn't, for sentimental reasons.

Naalala ko tuloy yung 1st Audio CD na nabili ko, which was Pearl Jam's "Vs."... same case... bought the thing even before I got to buy a CD player... :) actually, by the time I got to buy the CD player, "Vitalogy" (the follow up album to "Vs.") was just out that week... hehehe... sorry na-off topic na ha? just got caught reminiscing on the old days... :)

At first, I thought the player was busted coz I chose DTS and no sound came out of the demo TV. The salesperson in Western didn't know that it needs a decoder to play DTS (familiar ba?) and medyo nagmarunong at linagay sa DD kaya nagkasound. Then I had to buy an R1 Dune just to know if the player is multiregion. That was when I bought the player, it had a free Devil's Advocate R3 DVD then the rest is history... :D
BTW, I don't have a Matrix DVD. :-/

And before anything else, I have no intention to show-off or mang-inggit or whatever. Just sharing my thoughts. Well, the first dvd that I bought was the Commemorative Issue of JOSE RIZAL (yes, the Cesar Montano starrer). I saw it in one of my "sojourns" in Quiapo. It was P400 (!) and sealed. I believe it is Original because the paper inlay and outlay is glossy with fine not blurry prints and the dvd has a MENU, complete with the Making of Rizal and Subtitles. Most of all, the picture quality is not so-so na rin. Not perfectly perfect but still dvd quality.

And one thing more, I bought it at the time I had no dvd player yet. Told myself that since I was going to get one in the future, might as well start collecting dvds. And what better way to start your collection than to buy something patriotic and nationalistic in character. And it happened to be Rizal.

I know, it's not exactly the dvd to 'burn-in' one's player, but the missus chose that over an r3 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (sayang, this copy still had the english dub, unlike the new r3 releases).

The first dvd I bought was ... 'The Matrix" (r1). [That makes me number 21. :D] I bought the r1 version to test the multi-region conversion done on my player.

Now, the very first DVD I bought was Deep Blue Sea. Didn't know any better. :) The sales rep who sold me my DVD player said that he had a lot of extra stock that weren't bought. Deep Blue Sea Region 3 was one of them - at the lowly price of P600.

The Matrix *was* on my list. But fortunately a cousin from the US sent me that as a gift - along with The X-Men. ;D

hmm, I think that would depend on when you bought your player. :)

If quite some time ago, the "reason" would probably be: "Air Force 1" (I remember this being used a lot for demos by some stores).

Then more recently, "The Matrix."

Then even more recently (and currently, I think): "Gladiator"

The first DVD I bought was Message in a Bottle :-[ at Astrovision Galleria, around december 1998 for around PHP1,100 if I remember right.

My wife really loved the movie and since we had just gotten our player, I wanted to give her the best one available. I even remember the night we were going to watch it, our player spitted the disc out because it was a region 3 (I had no idea at the time that our player read only region 1 discs). So, I had to return it the following day and exchange it; people in Astrovision were nice enough though to replace it. Too bad Astrovision doesn't sell R1 discs anymore.

Believe me...if I had my way, I would've gotten another title...heheh! ;D

the dvd format only surfaced in 1997, so i doubt if there were any available dvd disk back in 1992.

Not only did our buddy rocalvo get a five-year head start on the DVD format, he was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Batman Forever three years before it was filmed! Maybe he's good buddies with director Joel Schumacher. ;)

Not only that, I remember in 1992, I felt I was one of the very few who bought the Special Edition LaserDisc of T2:Judgement Day (4 LD-set in the Silver box)

Only to find out now that somewhere, sometime that same year, rocalvo already had the first Terminator movie in a new format called DVD.

Yun pala, there was no reason for me to worry since until now, a lot of copies are still sold at stores. :) The first R1 dvd I bought is Chasing Amy - CC which I bought from benny. :)

Bought this sa HMV in Hong Kong back in 1997 when the media first came out. This was a Region 2 copy. I remember Warner and Columbia lang nagrerelease ng movies in DVD before. So the choices were really limited.

ooh, i just love that movie. that movie is so smartly written. love the acting by the ensemble cast. i like the movie because it's everything... there's love, action, drama, comedy, sex, horror, etc. when i watched it with the subtitles, goodness, i've understood every single detail of the movie. i appreciated it more when i watched it for the third time.

And what better way to start your collection than to buy something patriotic and nationalistic in character. And it happened to be Rizal.

then....my first purchase of a giftset..... LOTR: FOTR Collector's Edition giftset (c/o sir baby)

then....first purchase of korean le (still unopened up to now).... Big Fish LE (c/o ms ymeeh)

then...first purchase...hmm come to think of it...so far the only production diaries on dvd.... Peter Jackson's Production Diaries LE (R1) (c/o ms artemis)

then....hay naku.....a very expensive hobby snowballed and now had a life of its own :P

actually, dates - seller - condition - region and price ang list down ko (kasi i kept the receipts of most of my purchase) ..... para i know kung saan napupunta ang 13th month and bonus pay ko...hehehehehehe. ;D

baliktad tayo....got a dvd player as a gift so i had a player..and no dvd then 8) buti na lang, the dvd player given to me is multi region kaya didnt have to buy another player for R1 dvds ;D

I remember back in 2002, I chanced upon a sale at Video City. Bought 3 ex-rental dvds priced at P300. They were:

Sudden Death ( Van Damme )
What Planet Are You From
Wedding Planner

But that still didn't get me into this hobby as those were my only DVDs until 2005 when I bought BATMAN BEGINS. Followed by IRON GIANT, PEACEMAKER, THE MUMMY and BROKEN ARROW. The rest is history.

How about you guys?

The subsequent batches included KURUSAWA'S RAN, THE TRUMAN SHOW, FLASH GORDON & MAD MAX. None of those I have kept till today because they've undergone fresh remastering after many years and then released in improved editions. For me DVDs democratized the perfect-video home theater experience. Whether one is a certified millionaire who owns a 10-bit Video DACS-equipped DVD player with a matching 50-inch RPTV or a 9-inch CRT front projector, or a middle class bloke cum technically-minded nerdy - anybody could grab after a DVD disk and he could enjoy the same video quality that his more privileged neighbor initially enjoys from the laserdisk or US-import VHS originals.

hirap pa maghanap. very limited titles na available. puro warner lang tapos snapper case pa. if you wanted a particular r1 title in those days, you either had to order online or find specialty shops like cd warehouse. used to order from dvdexpress.

last year the first dvd i got was "the cave" but it was the "300 giftset" that really launched my dvd collection i got this together with "daredevil director's cut", "sin city", "resident evil 1 and 2" ;D
