Hubog (!)

I was surprised by its picture quality - as close as it could get to the original film version shown in theaters. I'm glad I decided to try it, after generally negative feedback on pinoy dvds in other threads.  (vcd version of this film is definitely a loser!)

Trip ko lang bilhin to see the quality of a foreign produced DVD of a 'Pilipino' movie.

Muro-Ami

I wasn't satisfied with the picture and audio quality.  That's the reason why I'm hesitant now to buy Filipino DVD.

If you've watched a good one in terms of picture and audio, let me know.

MAGKAPATID

bought it for a relative in the states. pinanuod ko na rin.

audio is passable. not as dynamic as R1s. pero what will you expect froma drama?

just trailers as a "special feature."

yun lang. judging from what i read here, long way to go pa ang pinoy DVDs. gudlak sa industriya!

MAGKAPATID din.

Sabi "theatrical trailers" as Special Feature. :(

hi ann! and others?

naka on ba receivers nyo if u r watching pinoy DVDs?

However, if the video quality is good at don ang focus mo, no problem siguro.. ;D

Ako since m HS days ayaw ko talagang manuod ng Pinoy movie...

siguro kaya and bagal ng asenso ng local films sa area ng special effects and other technology related stuff ay dahil na rin sa katulad kong ayaw i patronize ang Pinoy movies... except kung libre of course.....   :)

Has anyone else bought the DVD of Laman?

Is this a bad transfer or ganito talaga ang original nito?

Ganyan talaga ang original theatrical print. Pa-effect.

BTW, where did you get your LAMAN dvd?

I've been searching high and low for Regal DVDs locally, but was only able to get HUBOG.  Out-of-stock na sa Astro yung ibang titles na ni-release nila last year (YAMAcrapA & BAHAY NI LOLA), altho folks at Regal Video say they have them in stock but haven't sent them out to distributors yet.

Gerardo de Leon's THE BLOOD DRINKERS ("Kulay Dugo ang Gabi") - part of the Blood Collection

Purchased online.  Released by Image Entertainment.

The great transfer blew me away.  Image must have done some restoration work, considering that it is an old ('60s?) title.

Recommended for those interested to see a National Artist at work, altho this is not one of his classics.

Post by: jaycat on Feb 06, 2003 at 12:05 PM
bartmaniac,

The Blood Drinkers is dubbed in English, altho there's a serenade scene which they did not bother to dub. No subtitles or audio features except for a commentary.

Except that the commentary does not discuss each scene but rather a background on the movie and the restoration taken for its DVD release. Pretty interesting that they (Americans) would restore a campy Tagalog movie (& the scenes that were deleted when the movie was edited for American theatrical/ drive-in release, from 110+ minutes to less than 85).  Note that this movie comes from a time (mid-60s) when colored Tagalog movies were still the exception rather than the rule.

Other features include an interview with Eddie Romero (very informative, if you're into local flicks), drive-in intermission shorts, plus all those "Damn Bloody Trailers" for the complete Blood Collection!  Fun-time at the drive-in!

In fairness, maganda naman yung story ng Mano Po. I was able to finish watching the DVD kahit putol putol. Although I was disappointed not seeing subtitles, OK na rin.

Early DVD releases from VIVA Video like Nora Aunor's Flor Contemplacion Story and Regine Velasquez'  Dahil May Isang Ikaw have subtitles in four languages like English, Bahasa Indonesia, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. They are probably hoping to market it to the Asian territory which is not a bad idea.

Regal Films never bother to include any subtitles with their movies with the exception of LIVE SHOW.

I bought "Moments of Love" starring Dingdong Dantes and Iza Calzado for my sister's birthday because she said the movie was nice. I saw it for myself and I can't imagine why this movie became a mild hit. The first few moments are ok but the rest of the movie drove me nuts! Weak story, poor script, rather hollow performances all around except of course, for Ms. Gloria Romero. And poor Paolo Contis and his awful wig! His character was just pure, inexplicable evil!

I recently had someone go back to CCP to buy Sa Aking Pagkagising Mula sa Kamulatan, Relasyon and Laro Sa Baga to complete my Regal Platinum titles. However, I was told that the DVDs where returned to UNICO, consignment lang noong time na yun. So, wala na ulit ngayon.

I'm constantly on the look out, kaya i'll keep you posted.

I agree on this. It looks like most VIVA DVD's special features are not included in the DVD.

Off Topic, I just realized, GMA Records DVD's of the teleseryes doesn't include English subtitles like

Encantadia
Marimar
Dyesebel
Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang

I do hope on their future releases, they include as well more special features and subtitles for the world market.

I bought Sanda Wong at Landmark in Trinoma (I was surprised that after reading Sir Noel Vera's review about Sanda Wong, through meticulous browsing in Tagalog section, I came across with this title and without thinking twice, I grabbed it) I even asked the saleslady if there's a DVD counterpart...unfortunately (the answer is as good as my guess).. there's still a copy left (only if no one interested in the movie).  The saleslady even laughed a little while reading the titles I bought (she's thinking why in the world I'm buying old films wherein majority of the buyers in that record bar prefers foreign titles).  The title is for PHP 150 buy 1 take 1 so I have to find another VCD for the promo and I picked Ibong Adarna which has lots of copies ( I even saw Ibong Adarna in SM Megamall Department Store, MOA Astroplus and Video City, Megamall)

Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi is also available in Landmark, Trinoma and Video Section in Department Store of Megamall for PHP 99 pesos.

Pila Balde is also available in Astroplus, MOA and Video City in Megamall for PHP 155 or PHP 150.

By the way I managed to  get a copy of Hesus Rebolusyonaryo (there's only one copy left) in Astroplus, Trinoma.

my latest dvd purchase is BAYANING THIRD WORLD and the copy is so good for PHP 100

Is Sukob the best Filipino Horror movie ever made? Personally, those Shake, Rattle, and Roll series are over rated.

Sukob can be a cinematic treat to viewer's eyes but I think it wasn't the best horror movie ever made but I do enjoy watching this movie.  With regards to scare tactics (the typical "gulat" scenes accompanied by intense, sudden drumbeat or sound effects), they served their purpose well.  Storywise, uhm just read some of the comments posted by the legends here about the movie.

Try to watch Itim, Shake Rattle and Roll 2 (Aswang Episode), the Original Shake Rattle and Roll (Borlaza, Bernal and Gallaga), Shake Rattle and Roll 3 (Ate Episode) and Pasiyam.  These are some of the good horror movies (not necessarily with gross monsters and scary in the sense of you weren't even scream for it) with good story as well.  I also find Ang Pamana (Romeo Candido) a good horror film.

I agree with fitz_gerald, I had recently watched ITIM and it is one of the best and low budgeted Horror films I've ever watched.

It's been a while since my last purchase of Pinoy DVD/VCD...urgh! my finances won't allow me to buy every title I wanted to be part of my collection...

my latest purchases by the way are the ff.:

DVDs

MAGNIFICO - PHP395 (2 more copies available at SM Megamall Astroplus)

RIZAL - PHP350 (One copy left in the shelves of SM Megamall Astroplus)

VCD

SANTIAGO - PHP150 (just recently released and lots of copies seen in Odyssey and Astroplus branches)

(as usual very poor, incomplete copy/transfer... if not for this good film of FPJ and the great Lino Brocka... I can save my hard earned 150 pesos!)

I've just received CineFilipino's Sakay DVD as a birthday present.  I haven't seen it yet but I sampled it and the transfer looks excellent  and it's in widescreen.  The only disappointing thing is that it says in the box that there are English subtitles but there are none.

Includes some special features(behind the scenes, viral videos, etc.)
Still funny though they didn't remaster it for video.

Ako, I bought the R1 version released this month. This is a better copy than the ones released during the premiere screening of Kinatay. Nagha-hang 'yung ibang copy na binenta ru'n. Aside from that, hard-encoded ang English subtitles. The R1 subtitles can be turned-off.

Dropped by Video City yesterday and found many bargain pinoy DVD's at php75 and php99 only.

It's a good thing I held off purchasing these movies when they were newly released because the VCD like PQ is terrible and the sound tinny.

The movies are in widescreen but not anamorphic.

In this day and age, DVD's of this quality is unacceptable.

Still a bargain. Paid only php447 for all 5  ;)

Can I ask where?
Through kabayancentral.com
It is a burned copy only, but from authentic source (so no copyright infringements). It is a fairly good print as well, there must be some degree of restoration done. Other available titles from Mike De Leon/Cinema Artist Philippines/LVN (as currently advertised) include A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, Bayaning Third World, Southern Winds, and Bilanggo Sa Dilim.
I hope this helps.
