This packaging LOOKED really cool. But the sleeves are cardboard and tight, and they scratch up the discs when you pull them out.

Still, I enjoyed the look of the package, and the content of the discs, so this is still my favorite.

ooooh, lots of temptation in this thread. i , too make it a point to wait for the boxed set instead of purchasing dvds one by one. a good example is the jurassic park series. i didnt get the 1 and 2 set since i found out JP3 was coming. now i was able to get the JP trilogy. through the years i was able to collect a lot of boxed sets. these include: all R1

1)Nightmare Series
2)Tom Clancy
3)Schwarzenegger collection
4)Superman Collection
5)Blair Witch Experience
6)Jurassic Park Trilogy

can't believe i missed out on the james bond series though  :'( anyone willing to sell theirs?

the Godfather boxed set!!!! the definitive mob film. Francis Ford Coppola's Masterpiece. Contains two of the best films ever made. Seeing the screen tests of Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall and Marlon Brando is a gem. Plus you get to see Robert De Niro audition for the role of Sonny Corleone.

joey, from dvdfile:

January 24

Dance Hall Days - 12:01am

Though Fox still hasn't announced any details on that long-awaited Red Curtain Trilogy box set, a collection of three of Baz Luhrmann's latest films - Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and Strictly Ballroom - Buena Vista has announced the full specs for their own Strictly Ballroom standalone release. (Though Fox is distributing the Red Curtain box set, Strictly Ballroom is a Buena Vista title, and the 3-pack will be a joint release between the two studios.) The standalone version includes a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, French and Spanish subtitles, a new audio commentary with director Baz Luhrmann "and others" still TBA, the "Samba To Slow Fox Dancing" featurette, a "3-D gallery," a deleted scene hidden as an easter egg, and trailers. Retail is $29.95 and street date 3/19.

I  just got Band of Brothers, when I saw the packaging in the pictures I thought it was gorgeous but its a lot cooler and awesome when your already holding it right in your hands.  I think this is the most protective packaging of DVD in the market if not the most beautiful.  The tin can has a shade of green all over different from whats in the picure it actually look better.  And the embosed title infront and on the sides iare just great.  Casing palang sulit na ;)

I like the tin can casing also but why didn't they print the DVD details directly to the tin case?  Instead of printing it on the flimsy cardboard that is wrapped around the tin can.

the BoB box set is really well made. I think ang nagpapaganda sa LOTR Gift Set is yung packaging niya, but the set itself, is probably not as good as the BoB set. Yung tin case, and yung nilalagyan ng CD, which folds all the way to the end, then at the back pictures... very well made.

Just seen this Box Set from Mega Mixx ang ganda ng box niya.  Nakaka-tempt bilihin dahil lang sa box!  ;D

Meron pang parang animated picture sa harap, it changes picture when you move it.  And the box is made of hard plastic yata or something really hard not cardboard and you can open it by pulling the top part maiiwan yung base.

Saw a recent issue of Home Theater and they voted The Godfather DVD Collection as one of the top DVDs (no. 2 I think).

Certainly, in terms of content, it would be a must-have.
But the transfer, both in terms of video and audio but especially the video, is awful. I wish they did a better job on that one.

Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy (Criterion Collection)

They say this is could be the best of all Criterions.
The description from the site reads:

By the age of thirty-four, German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder had already directed nearly twenty-two feature films. In 1978, he embarked upon a project to trace the history of postwar Germany in a series of films told through the eyes of three remarkable women. Fassbinder’s The Marriage of Maria Braun, Lola, and Veronika Voss—the BRD (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) Trilogy—would garner him the international acclaim he had always yearned for and place his name foremost in the canon of New German Cinema. The Criterion Collection is proud to present these films as a group for the first time ever in home video.

In germany, they released a very nice limited edition of one of my favorite Westerns "Once Upon A Time In The West", the Sergio Leone epic.  It comes in a light colored wooden box, with a soundtrack CD, as well as a harmonica with the title of the movie printed on it (in German).

Got myself  the Hero Boxset From Japan.
I can't seem to open it sa ganda.  :(

There is also Men In black (1 & 2) boxset from Japan.
Almost same size as that of Hero.
Includes clock, figurines, toys, calling card holder, etc..

I'll try to post actual picture pag marunong na akong magpost ng picture.

di naman... fresh lang siguro kasi ang "customs nightmare" sa akin because i accompanied a friend pick up his package at the post office... and natapat sa strict na customs officer! LOL.

no doubt about it... if i had this in my possession, i'd be proud too...  ;D  (psst... so bro. hemi... kelan ba dadating ang ganiyan mo? he he he.)

(teka muna ... isn't "pride" supposed to be one of the 7 deadly sins?? negative din yun ah... LOL.)

baka after 5 years.. dating na ganyan ko.. spiff.. i dont worry about pride (in another context) being one of the deadly sins...  i worry more about gluttony and envy especially in collecting, buying and selling dvds..

another I Robot LE gift set (from Japan this time)

Next March, there will be a limited edition release for I, Robot.  2 disc, and only 5,000 will be produced.  This will be like the Alien head set, in that it will sell out months in advance.

We have already placed an order for some, and the price tag, while high, is better than you would expect.  We will have a final price soon, but it will be under $200.

No problem dude! March?! I might be there Feb but not March, anyways I'll send you a PM if i'll be leaving the country next year since Japan is my transit point to anywhere around the world. I'm also interested with this set kaya kahit no planned business trip for me by march, I'd still go there just for this set & other upcoming Limited boxsets from Japan. Uh-ohhh there goes my summer vacation budget....

lol...

flyboy dude, after seeing dvd sets from korea, japan and germany.. i realized that Not all the World is America. i consider myself lucky to get some limited editions from different parts of the world (courtesy of online forums and some high flying friends).. medyo mahal nga lang at tutok dapat sa net all the time. oh well.. always thinking and still adhering to the concepts the harder to get, the better to have and "quality over quantity" .

i have "experienced" that japanese releases are superior maybe because of high quality standards that they want to maintain. the price is so much worth it if you ask me... kaya one month bago ka mag shopping spree sa Japan, sound off via sms para mapag ipunan ko..

salamat in advance..

Geez hemisphere1234...this is indeed another very tempting box-set.... I'm really amazed with th Japanese's creativity. They appear to be so innovative in "delicious" box-sets, hence making them highly collectible & sort after collection but of course with an exorbitant price to pay, i.e. the cost of an arm & limb as the ultimate sacrifice  ;D

i think the Mummy Legends box set does not only give us a cool & collectible box (am a sucker for box sets kasi), but all the three (3) movies are now being released with dts audio tracks unlike before that only The Mummy, Ultimate Ed. that has dts....also, there is an additional disc for The Mummy Returns or is it for The Scorpion King, dati kasi yung The Mummy, Ultimate Ed. lang ang 2-discs :)

but i haven't decided yet whether to order this, am not a very big fan of this series kasi & besides di ko pa nadi-dispose ang 3 titles ko, hehehehe ;D ;D ;D

sir classicman,  i guess this is a good boxset if you have not purchased these titles before... i dont consider this set one of the best though.

got the following with DTS audio encoding:
The Mummy Ultimate Edition - R1
The Mummy Returns - R2 Japanese Release
Scorpion King - R2 Japanese Release

other than the cardboard  box.. no special features or item added/included in this boxset..  :(

Yes I agree classicman, exactly as what you have explained (this also makes me a sucker for box sets then ;D) esp those of us that have not collected all the 3 movies or perhaps so far only collected one movie, etc. Whether this boxset is selling well in the market or not, whether it includes any special items....some of us still consider this a good boxset tho it's definitely not the best available boxsets. It's more like a collectible set. Anyway, I'm dying to get this boxset in order to complete the movies collection. Hehe ;D ;D

oh well , i respect your opinion but i still think this set should be more appropriately placed in the Some Collectible and LE R3's where it was first posted by ymeeh.. and not in the best boxset thread.

but i cant wait for the pix.. post it when your set arrives...

:)

It could be either a boxset or a collectible set depending on one's point of view & difinition.  ;) It's a boxset since it has 3 movies compiled (it does comes in a box). On the other hand, as you mentioned there's no special items included in this boxset (hence not the best boxset but it is still nevertheless a boxset) except the nice cardboard box with some interesting pix (thus qualifying it for a collectible set as well). Well, for me it's a little of both & it is still a nice collectible box set.

Likewise, your posted The Apocalypse Now Redux DVD in a Bottle, literally speaking is just a collectible item & not a boxset since it has only one movie, not more than one disc, has no special gifts, items, photos, etc except it comes in a unique bottle that houses the disc. ;D

Sure no worry hemisphere1234, will post some pix if I got my set  ;)

a message from one collector to another..

regarding  apocalypse, the set is a gift and the way i see it.. is a product of creativity and classic taste...  i believe you cant find the set in any Astro or liquor store.  novelty and rarity play a tricky part there..

also, IMHO, when you say "the" best, there's a unique factor, characteristic, or sensibility that goes with it..

mr. pchin..  feel free to post. if Mummy Boxset for you is one of the best boxset in your collection, i completely understand and support you all the way...  i wont argue with history. on a lighter side,  it feels good (or "best") knowing that im not the only one interested in these limited and collectible "boxsets".  salamat naman...

hehehe..   ;D
 ;)

intro from AZNfilms.com
This limited edition box set from Japan is not for the weak of heart and is made exclusively for die-hard movie fans. Limited to only 9000 sets worldwide, the set totals nine discs - one movie plus an extra features disc plus a ninth disc full of extras not featured on any DVD release in any country to date - all of which (9 discs) have DTS audio! The super cool Alien head slides out to house all nine discs or you can store it in a photobook-type cover. Our first run of these sets sold out within a few days, but luckily our JP distributor found only five sets from their warehouse so here it is. We still have it at the original list price when it first came out (check out Movietyme.com or eBay to see what it's worth). The shipping charge on this boxset averages to around $40 since it's practically the size of two DVD players. If you thought that was bad, we paid $147 for shipping from our distributor from Japan for each of these sets to get to us.

Here's a question regarding RESERVOIR DOGS BOXSET which i don't understand.
Why is the Mr. Brown cover not included in the Boxset?

what about this? (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000069K6M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)  ???  ???  ???

oo nga ano, ngayon ko rin napansin ito......the only probable reason i can think of is siguro its all about 'marketing', para maging mas special or mas rare si mr. brown.....tingnan nyo mas mahal sya, hehehehe ;D ;D ;D

i haven't watched any of the five (5) movies included in this set (one movie - one disc kasi), but my initial review on the packaging is that it's indeed one of the best DVD box sets there is, as a matter of fact it is the best on my meager collection.... ;) the box itself is made of first class sturdy material, ang tibay pwedeng pamalo, hehehe ;D, it has a 50-page booklet, the cover of the album-style digipak holding the discs is made of cloth material w/ embossed prints.....very elegant & classy talaga.....ang bigat nitong box set na ito, probably 1 kilo...... 8)

finally, am proud to own one of the DVD box sets posted here in this thread :D

ei sir hem,

didn't you post something before that there's another Infernal Affairs Trilogy set coming out? Any news on that one?

I think this is the one you are mentioning?

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0QAClAroShlnyL7NufqHGh1oA*hVh9JxZ1W8Mat9AVtX7EfWPErgKPvLSzAYQORSAlH7EtYD6oS4M!HRUux70HdOLk*32yaLlzoylAgBwIRc/infernal0.JPG?dc=4675510838463461807)

I suppose to buy this one, but after finding the depthness and details of the 8disc set, Im on a hunt to get the 8disc than this.

Hemisphere1234, correct me if I'm wrong but was this the Anthony Wong's Starred Hongkong Cat III Exploitation Film?

here's the description from the retailer:

In a riveting performance that won him 1993's Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, Anthony Wong stars as the owner/chef of the Eight Immortals Restaurant, where the original owner and his family mysteriously disappear. As the police, led by Danny Lee, intensify their investigation, they gradually uncover the shocking truth. Definitely not for the squeamish, "The Untold Story" is also an intelligent character study filled with dark humor touches. And remember... it actually happened! Directed by Herman Yau. Contains scenes of extreme violence and graphic sexual situations--absolutely not for viewers under 18 years of age.

Yeah agree! It's too precious & the last thing we want to hear after shelling out so much $$$ is to find out in horror that our Treasure is lost in transit or in the PO. Assuming, we survive the first tension, the last predicament: facing those crocs in PO dying to take a bite is yet another story.....  >:(

Is that the Mainland China release? I was tempted to buy that but read somewhere that the dialogue is in Mandarin, meaning I won't be hearing Tony Leung and Andy Lau's real voices... the packaging looks quite good though.

this is exactly what i got from koreandvds, sir hemisphere, where did you find this photo coz its not the one posted at their site, ang galing mo talagang maghanap, hehehehe ;D ;D

i haven't watched any of the five (5) movies included in this set (one movie - one disc kasi), but my initial review on the packaging is that it's indeed one of the best DVD box sets there is, as a matter of fact it is the best on my meager collection.... ;) the box itself is made of first class sturdy material, ang tibay pwedeng pamalo, hehehe ;D, it has a 50-page booklet, the cover of the album-style digipak holding the discs is made of cloth material w/ embossed prints.....very elegant & classy talaga.....ang bigat nitong box set na ito, probably 1 kilo...... 8)

finally, am proud to own one of the DVD box sets posted here in this thread :D

your honor...reviews please after you finish watching those films......the video & audio transfer....... :D :)

your honor...reviews please after you finished watching those films......the video & audio transfer....... :D :)

your honor, i've so far finished watching The 400 Blows & Jules and Jim out of the 5 movies included in this box set :D......both DVDs have very good video transfer coz they're in anamorphic WS, both discs are DVD-9 & dual layered, as i've opined in my review about The 400 Blows in the other thread, this is a much better release than the now OOP criterion coll. since it is only in a DVD-5 single layered disc......

as to the audio, they have both the original mono audio tracks so there's not much to expect from that...... :)

both DVDs have commentaries & are loaded w/ extras, the only downside is that these extras are all in french language w/ no english subs, only a removable korean subs......but the film features of course have english subs....... ;)

Just an FYI to all,

the korean version of Kung Fu Hustle LE was pulled out by koreandvds today... no news yet why...  ???

The reason is basically the quantity of its production is limited only to 3000

Jeckjeck, was this the product design and inserts of your Kung Fu Hustle?

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0PwDvAlgSajwW*9*SBoZpjnXK8Zc8iiJ3KP9lDpgF9rJVlwTUo6uRBR7ke0U4FMyb0uW1Pqc27tTfH9YrBU45g3gyPSiApsk1/KFHustle.JPG?dc=4675519068089302339)

Unlike the Hong Kong release the quantity of its product is around 5000 to 6000 (that is why, Korean Online site even went to the extent aquiring such and sell it to its customers?

Hemisphere, since you have the Watch and Calendar ( Only comes with HK release ) with you on your Kung Fu Hustle Set? Was it numbered around 5000 to 6000 quantity?
