Title: Passive Pre-amp
Post by: Weng! on May 25, 2006 at 06:00 AM
dunno if this topic had been discussed before.

can a 50k ALPS pot be used in replace of the step attenuator?

if the output will be split in 2 to feed 2 t-amps, will there be a power degradation or disadvantage perhaps?

TIA sa mga replies ;)

In some cases its worth trying passive preamp first (ex. alps blue) before embarking on active preamps (tube or ss).

there's not much difference daw in sound quality.

any comments, experiences regarding this? tnx

i've been using a passive preamp for a long time now. maybe i've gotten so used to the sound that i'm having a hard time in finding a tube preamp to replace it

Previously designed a passive pre-amp but not resistor or transformer based. Currently in use by me and a couple of other people.

Let me try. First time I heard one, I can describe the sound as "raw".
Neutral in audiophile lingo according to FLD. It gives me the impression that what I hear is the recorded material, no additional contribution from the audio gear. It is dynamic without the additional punch of an active preamp.

there is really no comparison as you will be comparing apples to oranges....a passive preamp is there just to assist you change volume levels...it is not supposed to change anything but the volume levels... ;D
