Most Filipino classic movies can be seen on Cinema One's archive. And yes, its about time that they release these films on dvd.
-
It would be nice to compile a list and circulate it on e-mail, so that the owners of these films may start to realize that their might be profit in it on DVD.
-
all those classic comedy. lalo na yung ke mang dolphy, tito, vic & joey, just to name afew....

i was talking to Ronald Arguelles of Cinema One yesterday and he told me they only have the cable rights to these films. releasing them on dvd or vcd is a different story...

Insiang is available on DVD. You can buy it for PhP 450.00 in Powerbooks.
I haven't seen this one. Is it worth a blind buy?

Grab everything Klaus. I have both DVDs. They DVDs aren't great, but having the films available on your shelf anytime you want to watch Brocka's best is worth more than their tagprice.

Agree with Oggs. I'm getting those babies in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, this is just the start of a series of really high quality releases.

It's only Brocka's finest work, my opinion, and one of the finest Filipino films ever.

Oh, an important question for you all:
Manila by Night (a.k.a. City After Dark) is also available but I don't know if this is the edited theatrical version or the original uncut one. Does anyone know?
-
The Classic Comedies of Dolphy and Panchito --
KALABOG EN BOSYO on top of my list
I already have Ibong Adarna on VCD.
They don't make comedies like that anymore now.
-
Apparently it's the edited version. I wouldn't know for sure, I've never seen it on DVD.

Second. Just got these myself. The remastering and packaging are adequate, the cover art Criterion-quality and the tagprice more than reasonable.

Having seen the film in theaters and also on "uncut" bootleg Betamax years ago, I can say that the DVD has the same contents as the allegedly "uncut" bootleg video I saw. It's different from the official Betamax/VHS version that was released in the Philippines in the 1980s - that one was shorter, and had a lot of dialogue censored on it, as well. This DVD runs 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 32 seconds. I'm not certain if there was a longer version released.
But picture quality is quite bad for this title, by the way:

There are quite a number of interesting titles out on VCD that I wish they'd release on DVD. Example: Those films from Agrix.
-
Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara (Susan Roces)
-
Darna And The Giants ( Vilma Santos )
Karunungang Itim ( Ramon Zamora & Lotis Key )
These are movies I used to enjoy watching every 3pm sa channel 13 yata when I was a kid.
-
ALL those worthy classic tagalog horror films that really scare the bejesus out of us during the '70 and '80's in theaters as well as in the boobtube and continue to haunt us (in our memory) to this day!
-
All the Dolphy movies and Tito, Vic and Joey classics should be remastered, imho :)
-

and that's why i'm not too keen on getting a dvd release of a local film. baka i-dub to disc lang yung mga vhs copies. ;D
seriously, we have so much to learn and improve when it comes to film archiving in general, and transfers in particular. :(

I think CineFilipino did a very good job with Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang and Insiang.
But if you want an excellently restored Pinoy "classic", Mondo Macabro's Silip (Daughters of Eve) is in league of its own:

As many as they can, especially the older films.
Sorry for any re-posts, but I found this online:

lahat nang darna.
all films ni lino, ishmael, abaya, deleon, zialcita, ad castillo, perez at iba pang movies na classic ang dating nuong 70's and 80's.... mga pelikulang ipinalabas noong metro film fest noong 80's and 70's (if they started at that decade).
question lang po....
NAGDIRECK PO BA NANG MOVIE SI NESTOR TORRE?
-
Digitally remastered RIZAL with the following color scheme:
Scenes from noli at el fili - Sephia
Scenes from jose rizal past - Black and white.
Scenes from current jose rizal - colored.
This is to distinguish them apart so the movie is not confusing especially to those who do not know the history of rizal and the story of noli and el fili.

Shake, Rattle and Roll!

-
I just picked up Ishmael Bernal's Himala on DVD.
It's a blind-buy. Was it worth it?
-
I think it's an excellent film, one of Bernal's best. Haven't seen the DVD, tho.
-
Had my original copy of Himala and Manila by Night. Nilinis lng pero di natanggal yung Japanese subtitles sa Himala. ;D
-
TRIBU and PISAY
gosh meron na palang DVD ng Himala

MALIGNO
DARNA FILMS
NYMPHA (ALMA MORENO)
NAPANSIN KO NA ANG MGA LUMALABAS NA CLASSIC PINOY MOVIES ON DVD'S AY GALING LANG SA VHS (TRIGON MOSTLY).
-
It wouldn't surprise me if much of the original prints of these films have already been lost or the cost of restoring them is too pricey that only a VHS transfer is possible and/or affordable.
It's really sad that the Philippines doesn't work harder to try and preserve classic film prints.
-
sad but not surprising. Time and time again we filipinos have shown that we do not care about our history. We don't learn from our past. That's why we are in the state that we are in now, we never learn from our past so wer'e doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over and over again.
-
Hongkong Holiday (1957). San Meron?
You can check it Stray Cat on cinefilipino.com under the Sampaguita Pictures releases. This is one of my most remembered b/w movies on RPN-9 during the afternoon. Sigh..... Dolphy was really funny at that time.

True, but in terms of film history, we're not alone. I think France was the only that did a consistent job of preserving their cinematic legacy. Hollywood, Bollywood, much of Southeast Asia, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Italy, even Japan and China have done little to save film artifacts, and only recently have started cataloging and preserving their films (although the situation is not as bad as it is in the Philippines, early Hollywood films for example, as much as 50 per cent of those made before the 40s, are either lost or irrecoverably damaged). It's not only that we as Filipinos don't care about our past, but in general no one cares about the past. Film, across the board, was treated as a commodity, and such, was discarded just like any other commodity. It's true that the situation is really bad in the Philippines, but to say that its people is singular in their carelessness is simply another form of postcolonial self-hate and deprecation--the worse kind of cultural amnesia.
