Pag magka pera ako, one of the first things I'll buy is a sound system for my DVD! Sa ngayon kasi I'm only relying on my TV, like DVDgurl there. I wanna fully appreciate my Das Boot!!!! :)

THE EAGLES in D.D. OR DTS this really makes you feel like you are in the middle of the concert, PLUS they have a bonus sound track that all five singers are coming at 5 different speakers a nice way to show how great a 5 channel separation can be...

another favorite, is the Imax speedway dvd ... this is the closest you can get , if you want to experience what it feels like to behind a formula one race car...just hear those engine roar....

for great panning sound demo...I'd say is air force one (when the f-15 plane goes around air force one) or dragonheart (when the dragon was flying circles around dennis quaid)

the sound can really enhance once viewing...it's liking watching a different movie with this 5.1 technology...

i just hope my neighbors can appreciate it, like i do....:)

I would have to say:

1. Saving Pvt. Ryan
2. Terminator 2 (dts)
3. Jurassic Park 1 (dts)

I have also heard rave reviews about: (http://goldrush.com/~herd/as-drool.gif)

1. Titan AE
2. U571

I don't own these disk but they are pretty good surround demo disks:
1. The Haunting (dts)
2. Das Boot
3. Dragonheart
4. Sleepy Hollow

BTW, you've just got to hear the depth-charges in U571 and Das Boot. They're awesome.(http://ions.org:82/dcf/Images/yum.gif)

I would have to say Das Boot tops my list for the best sounding DVD.  It makes great use of the surrounds and gives your sub a real workout.

2 would have to go to Super Speedway.  If you have any interest at all in motor racing then you have to check out this disc.

3 would go to Saving Private Ryan for obvious reasons since everyone else agrees on this disc.

You might want to check out the sound on these discs as well:

Ghost In The Shell
The Rock
Blade
Cutthroat Island
Clear and Present Danger

T2 Ultimate Editon also.

Armageddon Criterion Collection is OK also and even though it is not DTS, the sound quality is still better that the ordinary edition.

I borrowed by friend's SPR - DTS and like what Toprock said, it really rocks.

I am interested though as to how The Haunting DTS would sound like sa amin, especially while watching it at night with the lights off and the aircon on full blast.  Mas feel siguro.

Or, I might just settle for the DTS Demo #4 which contains SPR, The Haunting, Dances with Wolves, The Eagles concert and many more.

SAVING PVT RYAN    (DTS)    - Hands down one of the BEST if not the BEST.

U-571                    (DTS)    - Depth charges explodes on every speakers (pang work-out ng ht system).

HELL FREEZES OVER (DTS)    - Galing ng boses ni Don Henley (the bonus track seven bridges road- you can hear one member of the band for every speaker GALING).

LOST WORLD           (DTS)    - Every time the T-REX appears, low volume ka lang ang lakas ng BASS grabe!

T2 ULT.

TOY STORY 2                      - Demo sa video, excellent audio, GREAT movie pa!

I don't have a DTS set-up (yet), so I can only comment on DD:

1. Das Boot-- although the disc is a flipper, the LFEs are as low as they get. Effects don't just jump from one speaker to another but are dynamic; (WARNING: SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!) you can almost visualize steel fragments flying around the room as the U-Boat sinks deep underwater. Kaya lang, dapat makisama rin ang A/V room mo.

2. Seven-- there are no explosions here, but the effects are more subtle. all ambient noises are heard, that provide a you-are-there feeling. That's why its more enjoyable to watch this on a quiet night.

3. Contact for its LFEs as well.

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas has its soundstage going beyond the physical placement of the speakers in some musical tracks.

The DTS Demo discs (including the audio disc) siyempre would top my list kasi collection na iyon ng mga best works nila eh.

Pero kung trip mo ang bumabayo, lalo na kung may subwoofer ka...

1.  Charlie's Angels (especially the fight scene in China Town).
2.  Bring It On (duon sa finals competion)
3.  Deuce Bigalow (almost althroughout the movie)

My humble choices:

Eagles Hell Freezes Over - DTS (much much better sounding than the BGees One Night Only also in DTS)

5th Element - the desert scene

Vertical Limit - nice sound all throughout

Cliff Hanger - openning scene, the chopper seems to be moving around you

Still saving money for Saving Pvt Ryan DTS . . he he he!

Komikero,

Yes It's TITANIC in THX! okey yan ModKomikero!

anything: DTS and Dolby digital 5.1 !!!

Woody Allen movies are dolby digital pero mono.
To date, marami nang magagadang mixes na lumalabas di gaya dati na pailan-ilan lang.

Saving Private Ryan DTS
The Hauting DTS
Jurassic Park (corrected edition) DTS
The Cell    Dolby digital
U-571 DD/DTS

Old movies usually has Dolby Digital 2 channel lang.  I have Ice Castles and Made in America for example.  Bitin talaga sila which usually forces me to use DSPs para magamit naman the other speakers.

Just added to my list: Diana Krall Live in Paris. Very natural sounding. Nice orchestra sound. And you can hear the faintest growling in her voice, the sound of the tongue hitting the roof of her mouth, the parting of her lips. Please remember I am describing her singing :)

Eversince getting a DVD player and discovered its audio potentials, I've been buyng only blockbuster movies.  In particular I Like:

SAVING PRIWATE RYAN:  the sounds of bullets whistling from the left, then the right rear channels was a novelty I failed to detect from my old pro-logic set-up before.

TOY STORY 1 & 2: Just amazing for an aniumated feature

EARL KLUGH Concert:  The audience clapping comes from the rear!!!  makes you feel to be right at the stage's edge.

GODZILA & TITAN AE:  The monster's grumble and the spoaceship engine roar ruined my rear speakers that were specified just for a pro-logic set-up. Had to buy a new more powerful full range set.  Is that good?

Shaolin Soccer - The Championship Match between team Shaolin and Evil team
ID4 - NY city was blown to bits
Shrek - The Karaoke Dance Party Special
Mummy Return - The opening sequence (where the Scorpion King invade a territory)
Storm Riders - The match pitting Wind & Cloud against Lord Conqueror

The Pledge, the one starring Jack Nicholson.

Not a special effects-explosions type of sound trip, but a nice, atmospheric soundtrack and subtle sound engineering, appropriate for the film.

As I have noticed in this thread that those movies with a lot of LFE's or those movies that give your sub a workout are branded as best sounding...

How about giving Diana Krall Live in Paris and Charlotte Church's Enchantment some credit ;)

Good point!
You can't go wrong with Diana Krall!  :D

and if you want classical music
check out telarcs DTS demo disc #5

Listeners to this Telarc DTS Surround Sampler will notice a clarity, directionality, and spaciousness that, until now, have been literally unheard. Using the encoding technology of Digital Theater Systems, Telarc here offers six surround-sound channels encoded in a single data stream in such way as to minimize data compression yet yield six 20-bit discrete playback channels. Other technologies are limited to a data compression ratio of twelve-to-one, rather than the three-to-one ratio utilized here. With compromise, thus at a minimum, the auditive improvement is astonishing.

Telarc engineer Michael Bishop has often pointed out that multi-channel technologies bring artistic realism to a new level partly because they grow from the self-evident principle that sound imaging is subjective and illusory—though the illusion embodies what is generally regarded as an accurate portrayal of reality. At all events, the images are conceived in the mind's ear, generated as they are by mechanisms. This new format gives the brain more imaging material more accurately than previous technologies, and what results is an unexampled capture of subtleties—as the tracks on this disc will show.

—Excerpt taken from the liner notes written by Michael Murray

Michael Bishop -- Sound Effects Design
1. Surround Madness v5.1.03
2. Monteverdi: Vespers of 1610: Deus is adjutorium / Domine ad adjuvandum
3. Horner: End Credits from Braveheart
4. Think About You
5. Sahra
6. Mahler: Lustig im Tempo und Keck im Ausdruck from Symphony No. 3
7. Holst: Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets
8. Perfect Blues
9. Vaughan Williams: Beat! Beat! Drums! from Dona nobis pacem
10. Canning: Fantasy on a Hymn by Justin Morgan
11. Summertime
12. Broke and Hungry

Sound Effects

13. The Apollo 13 Mission
14. Home Run
15. Warp Eight
16. F-16 Fighter Squadron—Into the Battle
17. Jurassic Lunch

just be careful with track #1, 13, 16 and 17...
just make sure all your can goods are well secured in the pantry ;)
the recording on this dvd is truly reference quality, my only complaint is that the disk does not provide any graphics or screen saver while the disk is playing, so it has a tendency the burn your screen, specially if you have a rear projection TV. i normally just turn off my tv or just uses the PIP so as to prevent screen burn.

i liked that scene too!, that's one of the cool mix where the audio pans from the front to the back/surround speakers.
my only complaint about the sound is that when ever a big carrier ship pans on the screen, the walls in my house starts shaking...this was cool at first, but it gets old and kinda detracks your attention to the movie...they really put the lfe channel on steriods on this mix.

I agree with you on that one bently. This time around I think the lfe channel is more active compared to the Episode I dvd. Not once did my subwoofer go to standby mode.

In the Phantom Menace mix, I do remember that it went to standby mode once during the calmer Tatooine scenes.

Aside from the asteroid chase, the speeder chase and arena scenes are highlights.

While watching T3, one thought kept coming back. To paraphrase Roy Scheider's character in Jaws -- "We're going to need a bigger subwoofer." DVD's out on Nov. 18.

Of the ones that are already out but have not been mentioned in this thread, I would add: Blue Crush.

Finally got Vertical Limit Superbit, (been contemplating on getting this title for a while now)... all I can say is "breathtaking!" the picture is excelent, Mountains, Ice, Scenery is inspiring.  The sound is Great too, DTS.  Avalanches, the sound of being inside a chopper, sound of snowstorms, and explosions will really give your subwoofer a workout! I highly recommend this disc! If you have a 6.1 setup... whoa!  you really feel like you are inside the chopper at 24000 feet.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Memo to the DTS addicts - you gotta have this one. It ranks up there with the Superbits. The ship slicing through the water, the cannonballs tearing through the ships, the gentle creaking and bobbing of the ship, even the violin-and-cello duets - everything is captured well. Do you sometimes feel that the surround mix is too subtle on some DVDs? Not on this one!

Not sure if it's best-sounding, but it certainly is one of the LOUDEST sounding dvds. Be careful with volume settings,  starting with Chapter 6 when that "machine" starts blasting people. Hang on to your remote!

DOMINO DTS-ES

Not just awesome music, surrounds and LFE. But even the HF noises are just SO CLEAR!!!

Every shot fired, water splash, glass break, guitar string plucked, speech, clinking noises, etc are excellently encoded in DTS-es with stunning clarity.

A Chinese Tall Story DTS
Not bad for a Hong Kong movie - LOTR special effects and amazing DTS track. Avant Garde edition has DTS 96/24

I award it "The best HT movie of the Year"  :).

I just watched Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Wow! Guess I'll have to watch T2 also.

I usually only buy the DVDs of the movies I like. I think I have a new criteria now...I'll buy the great sounding ones, even if I'm not too fond of the genre.

You can try Master & Commander, especially the first few chapters. I especially like the subtle noises you can hear inside the ship, not just the battle scenes.

Also try House of Flying Daggers and Hero. Both have incredible fight scenes and have many subtle sounds. You will probably like the plots as well. A big part of both is actually the love stories.

If you want to hear how loud your side speakers can go, try Air Force 1, chapter 15 when the US jet moves to the rear and then fires on Air Force 1. Just make sure that the volume is down low or else you might break something. Chapter 33 is also a good typical jet battle scene.

Some of my best sounding DVDs with the DTS track:

Master and Commander. Not only do the battle scenes sound dynamic, there's also the parts leading up to the storm they face. And just listen to when the scene shifts to the interiors! There's a part where you can appreciate the surrounds when you hear footsteps of the crew landing on the boards on top of your actual ceiling!

I also have the House of Flying Daggers which has the oh so famous drum test scene. There's also the 22-minute D-Day beach assault on Saving Private Ryan. And I haven't opened it yet, but I hear that the DTS on the Superbit Edition of Das Boot is reference quality. I guess I'll check that on the weekend  :)

Top of mind, here are some of my reference quality DVDs in terms of audio -

1)  BAD BOYS 2 ( the car chase and the gun fight towards the end )
2)  THE RUNNING MAN SE 6.1 DTS E-S ( loud loud movie! )
3)  DESPERADO Superbit
4)  THE ROCK CRITERION COLLECTION

And special mention goes to most if not all of the chinese films

Hero, House of Flying Daggers and the best sounding chinese film for me is WARRIORS OF HEAVEN & EARTH.

And of course "The Fast and The Furious" movies.

Hey good one, 'll second that Blondie.  ;) Yes, the F&F movies are quite a treat - from the realistic car audio F/X and the music jams of course. The F&F2 Soundtrack is also awesome if you have car subs.  On the list, allow me to add MI:3 with crystal clear audio quality, especially when Ethan's team attacked the warehouse for the 'girl rescue' op.  High-quality uber-real sound F/X!   8)

Rocky Balboa

On DTS, it's actually a movie with really quiet dialog, but the music shines with full depth and range even with the subdued piano interludes.

However, everything picks up into an almost climactic second act when Rocky starts training for his fight with Mason Dixon. This is where the music shifts to everyone's familiar Rocky Theme and really dictates the energetic change of pace from the first act of the movie. By the third act, everything snowballs into a really exciting crescendo of ambient crowd noises and arena effects. It's a really well-balanced sound mix and design from start to finish -- but that's just me  :D

I like the opening scene of HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS. The scene where they spilled the beans.
