Title: WORLD CUP 2006 in Germany
Post by: Munskie on Jun 08, 2006 at 08:28 AM
World Cup is near.  Though  Solar Sportsplus will air some games, our cable provider here will beam games live and loop it up for 24 hours, a pay per view deal.
What are your thoughts and what country will you be rooting for?   ;D ;D  (mods, don't know kung me thead na nito..)

I don't know what the deal is going to be for Skycable. I'd love to get all of the games -- work be damned.

I'm rooting for England, especially with Wayne Rooney back in action.

It's a pity you have to pay to see this big event. I never liked futbol, but I would like to feed my noggin a thing or two about it sometimes. What better way to catch the futbol fever than by watching the best of the best compete? I guess mahal talaga bayad to get rights for this event.

Yup, it ain't popular here.  Not even in the United States.  Hoops reigns supreme here, and in the US theres NBA, MLB, and NFL.  I may not follow the sport religiously, but once in four years, I want to see the best players in the world gather, and play their hearts out for glory of their homeland.
an excerpt of an article PASSION OF THE CUP by SI's Frank Deford:

"It is part of the conceit of the Olympics that they boast that the Greeks actually called off wars when the Games were on. Not quite true. During wartime, Olympic competitors and spectators would be allowed safe passage through war zones, but not even the Olympics could shut down good old-fashioned armed combat. I would suspect, though, that if a war got in the way of the World Cup today, even the generals would demand an armistice."

click here for the full article "PASSION OF THE CUP" (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/frank_deford/06/07/world.cup/index.html).

I agree its a pity we have to pay that much to see a prestigious event like this.  Wala cguro sponsors kaya the fee is paased on the subscriber.  There's solar sports naman, though selected games lang.  ;D

It's too depressing to watch this bec. the Philippines has not been part of it. We're too obsessed with basketball, a sport that we hardly excel in. China is considered one of the best in basketball in Asia and the sport is not even very popular there.

Germany won vs Costa Rica 4-2, while Ecuador upsets Poland 2-0.  England debuts tonight at 9pm vs Paraguay.   Im also interested what the Americans can do in  this staging.  They reached Quarters last time in 2002.  They'll play 12am, Tuesday.  ;D

Brazil will be playing naaaaa!  Hope I see it on TV.

I'm not a a huge fan either  (I'm more of a rugby union fan, specifically the RBS and Heineken tourneys) but I do try to follow the games pag World Cup na. Sa EPL I'm an Arsenal fan, sa Spanish La Liga I like Barcelona and Real Madrid. I'm not familiar at all with the players sa Italian Serie and Bundes Liga though. Ganun lang ako kababaw, haha.

US nilampaso ng Czech Republic the other day......You can see it that they started very nervous and uneasy coz me pressure  na from higher expectations after reaching quarters in '02.  They certainly didn't play like a 5th ranked team....its the most lopsisded match so far.   They got a reality CZECH!!.  Hope they play better against Italy....on a side note, saw RONALDO of Brazil...he looks heavy and slow....and there are some suggestions that he be bench...sayang, three goals kailangan nya to tie for most World Cup goals. ;D

Saw the game between Italy and USA last Sunday dawn, and all I can say is that its ferocious.  Three red cards were issued (including an Italian elbow to USA's John McBride which left him bloodied), and US played with nine against ten almost all of the 2nd half.  The result?  a draw.  Football insiders (and all of Europe, hehe) have been bashing the Americans saying they're not worth the no. 5 FIFA ranking.  That might be true, but I applauded the gritty stand the Yanks made.....defending corner kicks in the 87th, 88th, 89th, 90th minute of the match.   Landon Donovan was given IV fluids just to recover after the game.

This is the World Cup folks!   ;D ;D

By the way, all of Group E have a chance to advance depending on the outcome of their last games in the round.  Let's see this Friday morning. ;D ;D

something interesting noted by the match announcer in yesterday's semfinal:

Italy have made it to the finals of the World Cup every twelve years since 1970.

In USA 1994, they lost to Brazil after penalties. I still vividy remember that horrible Baggio micrap fom the spot which sailed over the crossbar. It still haunts him to this day, and was the theme of a recent Johnny Walker "Keep Walking" TV spot.

Though there's nothing on the Solar Sports or ClicktheCity websites about this, it's been confirmed by a lot of my friends and people at PinoyExchange that RPN broadcast GER:ITA this morning at around 5:00. I guess we'll find out tomorrow morning if the schedule holds up.

Post by: wrAth on Jul 05, 2006 at 08:40 PM
the Sky PPV feed has literally been playng the GER-ITA semifinal ALL-DAY LONG! over and over again. i wouldv'e wished to see Zizou's master class at midfield against brazil again before the other semi.

anyway, upon further inspection, i seem to understand why Dave Odonkor was the most inconsolable man on the pitch after the match. Odonkor was guarding the far post during the corner after Pirlo's goalward strike. this was the same post at whch grosso curled his shot in. If he had stayed nearer the post, instead of wandering out and to the center (where Lehmann already was), while Pirlo was maneuvering at the edge of the box, Odonkor would have been able to safely clear the shot and bring the game to penalties (the 2nd italian goal was all but academic) which favored Germany.

then again, Germany may just have been instinctively pushing for an offside trap, and the speedy Borussia Dortmund winger was just sentimental.

France 1 : Portugal 0

an uninspired match, by most respects. Les Bleus pretty much coasted after Zidane knocks in a penalty in the 33rd minute. Portugal spent the better portion of the night trying desperately to break France's back line, which more often than not consisted of 6-7 men.

but surely, the more deserving team is going to Berlin. despite retaining 59% of ball possession, the Portuguese offense was unconvincing at best. in their desperation, they had resorted to play-acting during the most of the second half, when any player managed to get the ball near the French goal, which neither earned the ire or favor of the referee.

in fairness, Portugal had a couple of great chances in the end. C. Ronaldo struck a decent free kick on goal. Barthez bobbled in onto the head on a free Luis Figo, who then inexplicably sailed it over the cross bar. credit to Portugal's keeper Ricardo though. on top of guessing right on Zidane's penalty (which was too masterfully struck to be saved by anyone), he provided some spunk in the final stoppage time as he participated in two Portugal corners.

Vive le France.

Post by: wrAth on Jul 06, 2006 at 05:29 AM
on an interesting note, the match referee waited until the 80th minute to produce the first of 2 bookings, evidently mindful of the fact that 11 players from both teams are riding on yellow cards, which means another one would suspend them from the finals.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has conveyed his intent to explore expanding current regulations to accommodate a 3rd running yellow card to avoid similar incidents in, and leading up to (?) South Africa 2010.

So wonderful waking up to the slightly delayed telecast on RPN 9.  You get a full night's rest, wake up bright and early, basically lock out the world, ditch your celfone and the net and CNN and any other spoiler source and just click the TV on straight to Ch.9 and by God what a way to start the day.  And as everyone else in the house starts waking up and joining in, you get some high intensity viewing going on by halftime.

So you get to know the results 2 hours late, and there are some ads at inappropriate moments, but what the heck.  I'll take that anytime given the alternatives.

Thank you thank you thank you RPN9!

Italy's offense dominated the 1st half, and then appeared to be clumsy for the rest of the game. their defense was ROCK SOLID though! Canavarro and gatusso should be men of the match. they saved Buffon a lot of trouble.

Still this Cup Final will be remembered for Zidanes idiotic heabutt. uncharacteristic from a player of his stature. he simply self-destructed. and i'm sure his prominece as an "ambassador of the beautiful game" will be tarnished becasue of this one slip in his star studded career.

Trezeguet should thank his lucky stars he won't have the world on his shoulders tonight.

You know how rabid footie fans can get. I think the French football fans would have still reacted the same way even if the reason Zizou was kicked out of the game was for attempting to knife Matterazzi. Such is the blind and rabid loyalty of football fans -- that's why I love this sport!! ;D

On  a more serious note though, I really thought France had this in the bag and that it would've been a great send off for Zizou.

In contrast, the English weren't too keen to offer any affection to David Beckham after he, equally in bad taste, kicked Diego Simeone from behind (and below) during the 2nd round of France '98 - for which he was vilified as the man who ended England's run that year (They too, lost on penalties).

In fact, they would probably still be hanging effigies of Beckham until now, had he not curled in that oh so wondrous free kick in their 2002 qualifier against Greece in the dying minutes, to book England tickets to Japan/Korea 2002.

i guess the english are less forgiving than the french.

but then again, beckham is beckham, and zidane is simply, zidane.

ZZ still won the tournaments best player award, the golden ball.

from espn

The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism issued a statement Monday quoting "several very well informed sources from the world of football" as saying Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist." It demanded that FIFA, soccer's world governing body, investigate and take any appropriate action.

.....meron pa investigation to... ;D  I really believe he was provoked...but still, he shouldnt have done that....but if I was in his place too, ill never know... ::)

According to the French players Matterazzi said either of two things to him: that he was a dirty terrorist, and the other one was that he should play for his own country.

Either of those remarks would really push the button of an Algerian living in France. Having seen the match yesterday as well as the controversial headbutt I'm also much more forgiving of Zizou's action. I still maintain that he shouldn't have done it but given the context of what has happened I would say that it was understandable.

Zidane should have just blown up Matterazzi's car.

Hey guys, what happened to Brazil. Weren't they supposed to win the whole thing?

some reports point to materazzi insulting zidane's mother.

either way, zidane, elder that he is, should have put up with it, especially because they were playing on  all of sport's grandest stage.

since we're talking about football "villains" at the recently held World Cup, I guess it would be apt to talk about Cristiano Ronaldo.

When I heard that England went down to Portugal due mainly to Ronaldo's role I knew that it will be hard for him to go back to ManU. From what I've read it looks like my fears were not unfounded. The English fans now consider him their villain and Ronaldo knows it. He recently expressed that he does not want to play for Old Trafford anymore and is considering moving to Spain either to Real or Barcelona.

Villain or not this might be a big blow to my fave English team. Let's see if Sir Alex can diffuse the tension between Ronaldo and Rooney when practice resumes.

There really should be a football thread... I didn't know that there are a lot of footy fans here in PinoyDVD. ;D

Some renowned lips reader, with the help of an Italian translator claimed that Materazzi said this:

"you're a son of a terrorist whore"  and then adds "so just F**K off!!".......

Another bit of ManUtd news. Either Bayern or Real are interested in getting Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Sir Alex though is confident that he will be returning to Old Trafford.

Looks like the pre-season of the Premiership is getting a lot of action.

There's really been a lot of backlash in Man U since it was bought by the Glazer family... Fans are unhappy with Americans owning the club plus the Glazers haven't really been winning the over with their management decisions... they fired 3 of the long time directors of the club and replaced them with either members of the family or cronies... One good thing though is AIG (the company I work for) is the new shirt sponsor of the club  ;D ;D but the sponsorship was more of a repayment deal since the Glazer family have huge debts with AIG specifically tied in to their purchase of Man U... Medy baduy lang tingnan yung AIG logo on the Red Devils' jerseys since it's so plain  :P

Hey, I didn't know that they've got a new shirt sponsor. Are the new designs out? I have to get me the new jerseys again.

Despite the backlash I've still got high hopes for ManUtd they've got awesome talent and of course, where Rooney is, I'm there!

By the way, speaking of Zizou, a friend of mine based in Paris just emailed me and said Zizou is slated to be interviewed today. Maybe he'll finally shed light on the headbutting incident.

photos of the ManU players wearing the new shirts were already circulated internally as early as March...
you can view them here:

Thanks! It was not radically designed after all. Just a change in logo. I'm still going to get it though, hehe.

Zidane claimed that Materrazi repeatedly insulted his mother and sister although he did not elaborate on what the actual insults were ...
Materazzi has earlier admitted insulting Zidane but not his mother ...

here's the interview for those of you who can understand French :)
