Title: Mixed Martial Arts Thread : UFC - PRIDE - K1 - URCC
Post by: Compaq on Jul 30, 2002 at 05:23 PM
One cable channel, I think SOLAR, is showing UFC Fights. Kaya lang masyadong delayed. They started from UFC 1. Last episode was UFC 6 featuring Ken Shamrock and a certain Dan Severn (also a UFC champ) dubbed as Superfight.

I also happen to borrow a VHS copy of UFC ? (forgot na) that featured Vitor Belfort. Hanep manuntok ang mama, tulog ang kalaban nyang kasinlaki ng bakulaw.

Will be glad to hear from those who watches UFC (http://www.ufc.tv)

Cheers!!!

Hehehe. I watch this show together with my boys (hubby and son). Can't say I really enjoy it. But one time, this fight between this kick-boxer whatever guy (who according to the hubby, loves to lock opponents until they cannot breathe) and this wrestler....the fight took some 30 minutes, the kick-boxer guy was pinned down by this wrestler, all the while he was trying to lock him or something. You'd think talo na si kick-boxer but, no, he actually won the belt or whatever it is you call it.

That match was pretty exciting. It was three weeks ago I think. I've been tuning to  it since. I don't know why.   :-[  Solar nga, Saturday mga around 9 PM.  ;D  Anyway, are there really NO RULES in that game?

The show was banned before right?

Wow UFC in cable?? Cool Royce Gracie is still the man on top in terms of UFC Titles and Discipline JUJITSU.

Unfortunately UFC sunk down to ratings and exitement in US after adding Rules which what used to be an almost No Rule/No Holds Barred Fight.

Vitor Belfort was great unfortunately at UFC 12 I think he was beaten by an American Grappler

Actually, natyempuhan ko 'to after watching F1 Qualifying. UFC is  shown every other Saturday (just like F1 qualifying sked). But this time, hindi na sila sabay kasi hindi nag-break ang F1 last weekend. If i'm not mistaken, UFC is suppose to have their next episode this Saturday (August 3).

Just want to ask... do you feel the intensity after watching the fights? 'yung tipong pagtayo mo sa silya napapa-suntok ka sa hangin at napapa-porma ng karate... ;D

Cheers!!!

I hear ya there friend!  I happened to chance on one of the fights before (Shamrock was fighting some guy).  Anyway, intensity wise, I feel like watching a rematch or Tyson and Holyfield (if it ever would've come true).  Napapatalon ako minsan eh.

UFC's Peak was way back in 94-95 then around 97 it went to boredom as Cable providers would not show it in Pay per view because of extreme violence. That is why the rules were change and the violence has slowed down up to present UFC.

Some UFC like events which you could check in home videos are:

1. Japan's Pride
2. Pancreas Wrestling Japan
3. Brazilian Jujitsu tournament

Medyo. ;D

That fight I saw about three weeks ago...don't know who they are basta, they were both on the floor, one is pinned down by the other. I was trying to pretend-kick sa hangin, kasi ang tagal ng naka-pin nung gusto kong manalo e...I felt I was also under pressure to win. ;D...Sira.

My friend UFC is horrible to tell you the truth. They lost all their true talent to PRide (Japanese version of UFC). In pride you will see the best matches and the best fighters in mixed martial arts form. People truly get beaten up and submit. If there isn't any action they make them stand up again for another ass beating. You have to be in you peak physical level to compete in Pride. The prized Gracie family all of them have lost in Pride to only one guy. Kazushi Sakuraba. Which in return lost to the current Champion Vanderlei Silva. His technique is awesome I met with the guy in the states and Chute Boxe (Muay thai high breed with brazillian jujitsu). Pride is what you watch for Mixed martial arts and if you want pure striking watch K1 grand prix. I have a lot of tapes of both nga eh. I even have the annual Pride versus K1 where both organizations collide. I'm really up to date pa cause my friend from Japan comes back every month and keeps on taping the stuff for me  ;D

I'm fine with copying pre. No prob. You can buy orig of the famous Sakuraba vs. Royce gracie fight in virra mall ground floor it's like 3 dvd thing. But that fight was two years back. The one I pray to God I can see is the greatest gracie of this generation Rickson but he wants over 1 million dollars to fight sakuraba. That is most unlikely. Mas lalo na ngayon na natalo si sakuraba kay Vanderlei Silva the man who just massacres everybody. That guy is a monster in the ring but he's a real friendly guy in person !!!  ;D Dude if you're starting out with pride you've missed out a lot already. This stuff is really big in Japan since they pay really high and the athletes involved are treated like heroes in public all the best talent fight there and are contracted. Imagine 60000 watching pride every event. That's twice more than an NBA game in the US. I don't have copies of previous you should score sa virra mall even in squadron. My stuff is all updated and the more recent fights. I have every tape where sakuraba got his ass kicked by Vanderlei Silva. Anyways just give me a price and hopefully your tape na rin. By the way there are a lot of commercials etc for the pride tapes they were taped off Japanese TV.

PRIDE. Nuff said. If you don't know about it get to. cause you guys are missing prime talent big time. All the best are there. The shamrocks are there the gracies and the whole entire Mixed martial Arts community. It's the highest stage of competition. If you can wait na rin later this year sa PS2 Pride will ahve their own game  ;D

Pride for Mixed Martial arts. K1 for striking. Choose whatever tickles your pickle. And every once year the two orgs go up against eachother PRide versus K1. That's the really cool thing about it all. Those are only the two for reality combat. Of course you have pro wrestling there but everybody knows that's fixed  ;D

Been watching UFC the last couple of Saturday nights, and was wondering if you guys could fill me in on a little history leading to this year? Alam ko delayed yung UFC that airs on Solar by 5 years, tama ba?  I checked the website and UFC is now at around the 40th installment. Shamrock seems to still be around, but whatever happened to Gracie, Tank Abbott, Coleman, and especially Victor Belfort? Did he retire? Did Belfort ever fight Shamrock and the other legends? And who is the greatest UFC fighter?

Tanx. ;D
Title: Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock
Post by: Dragon Sleeper on Nov 24, 2002 at 06:50 PM
Just saw this kanina sa wowow..

I was flinching everytime Ortiz uses his dreaded knee strikes upon the defenseless Shamrock..

Tito may be a punk but he does back his trash talk with serious @$$-kicking!!

I feel for Ken... if this was done 8 years ago I think he had a chance but now...

Ortiz had his way and Shamrock's mug showed the proof.. ;D

UFC40-Vendetta was a sure cool Show!

I agree dude if it was done 8yrs ago..definitely Bad Boy Tito Ortiz is up for a beating..

Give credit also to Ken Shamrock despite the brutal beating induced from Ortiz he still did not tap out, stood up from take down and did not even knocked out.

ref Big John was great to stop imemdiately the fight after three groundpounding beating to shamrock

next Stop for Ortiz... Iceman Lidel!

For Ken.. better retire and go back to WWF

They might even have pride versus K1 there too ! Best fighters and best matches. Watchout for the big grand showing ! I was disappointed with "The Beast" / Shamrock second superfight. They were not too keen in mixing it up. Although Severn won, both did not deserve any accolades for that fight.

My faves are Predator Don Frye at Sakuraba. Though, Frye got beaten by Coleman sa UFC 10 and sa last fight niya sa Pride. But a 14-2 MMA record is nothing to sneeze at.

The dominance of Sakuraba over the Gracie family is nothing short of amazing. Tinalo niya si royler, ryan, another one I can't recall and the UFC legend ROYCE (!!!). I want to get all of this guy's fights on tape...

D*mn, I'm salivating over the prospect of the  Rickson Gracie-Sakuraba showdown. Anybody know why this has not happen yet? ***Rickson is undefeated (9-0) in MMA NHB fights and has masa funaki in his list of victims.

***ok,  granting rickson's old, but he claims to be undefeated after 500 fights(!)

Last UFC sa solar talo si Vitor Belfort.Grabe! Siya pa naman ang best striker na nakita ko aside from Don Frye.Si Tank give up din kay Maurice.Unbelievable! I don't like Maurice coz he doesn't show any skill other than lasting longer than his opponents then delivering some strikes in the end which makes the judges vote for him.Man! He can take hits but in my opinion that is about it.Now Belfort, that's another story. The way he strikes is deadly accurate and with full force.

Randy Coutore  the guy who beat Vitor Belfort, was not just an ordinary guy.. at UFC japan (*Spoiler) he beat Maurice Smith...

And at 2001' he and Pedro Rizzo showcased the 2001's greatest fights in UFC history.. take note last 2001 was Randy's reign being Heavyweight champion again after he got beat by Rico "Suave" Rodriguez

As for Vitor Belfort he also got beat up by the Iceman Chuck Lidell

Tank is the real UFC fighter!

Though may wrestling background (probably high school not counting the wcw experience) si Tank, he honed his fighting "skills" (if you can call it that) sa mga bar room brawls...  ;D

But he's great sa commentaries, e.g.,  glam-rock (ken s.), freddie mercury (severn) tom selleck (frye)...  ;D

Yup agreed Dragon Sleeper. He says he doesnt train and the last fight with maurice he said that he did not prepare for that.Just got off the bar stool so to speak. But not a lot of fighters can boast of having pounded some of the better striker and grapplers without formal training but with just brute force. It is only now that he is learning to counter some of the take downs and to be effective against or in the guard position.
During the first UFC events which I saw in laser discs I was always booing the grapplers because I thought that it did not take much skill in taking down an opponent and choking him.Hey, I thought, any moron can choke. That's for fighters who can't take and deliver punches. But recently my views have changed.I have taken up Aikido and my Sensei teaches me a little bit of Judo on the side.We have sparring matches ever so often. No hold barred judo sparring meaning take downs, submissions, chokes, you name it.Of course no striking because that is not Judo and I don't want to hurt my Sensei. ;Dhehe.Actually he beats the crap out of me.He weighs around 140 to 150 and I weigh around 185 and taller than him. He's taught me a lot of submissions especially the arm bar and a lot of chokes. It is not only to go for the throat but to sink your bone near your thumb to the adams apple and squeeze with your shoulders and head. There are a lot of choke position that you wouldn't believe.I am able to lift him and throw him down but so far I always tap out.You gotta be ready for injuries if your gonna spar no holds barred. ;D Man now I appreciate it when a grappler takes his opponent down and goes for a hold.Believe me it is not as easy as it looks.Hurts like hell when your opponent have you in a correct arm bar.
To those UFC fans out there.Pareng Dragon Sleeper.Take up Judo or Jui Jitsu if your into grappling.Muay Thai, boxing, Yaw Yan, Jeet Kune Do, etc if your into striking.Of course if you are into subduing with minimal injury to your opponent, take up Aikido which is what I'm currently learning.Ask those clubs if they are into sparring coz there is no substitute to being on the mat with an opponent. Then you will truly appreciate UFC, Pride or whatever fight tourneys you watch. It is a different kind of rush I tell you.
If UFC did not have rules, Tank would have been champion ten times over. ;D ;D ;D

Since the first ufc (shown locally on PTV 4 then but protests from so-called moralist put an end to that series), I was hoping to get into what royce gracie was doing but studies and work (at the same time) really put an end to those "dreams"  ;)

Now, I'm that I'm finished studying... I was thinking body building (lots of,  ;D ;D ;D )  combined with some self defense  ...

So where do you study your discipline? Is it near Alabang or Q.C.? More importantly, affordable ba?

What a great New Year Countdown it was last night with UFC16- Battle at the BAYOU!

Whoa.. All are Supercards...

from the tournament to the three superb Superfight!

I thought the cream of the  crop was the Jackson-Bholander match but I never thought that the middleweight match-up between Frank Shamrock and  Igor Zinoviev was the highlight of the night!

FYI,  Igor Zinoviev was a superb MMA fighter in Battlecade (Extreme Fighting) he was undefeated there until ofcourse that vicious thug he suffered in the hands of Frank Shamrock (FYI 5-0 record in UFC).. Ganda ganda event lat night! ;D

I guess... It will not be as good as UFC why

1. UFC is the MMA household name in North America
2.  13,770 fight fans, the largest crowd in mixed martial arts history in North America ahve witnessed the las PPV of UFC-Vendetta
3. Despite the great line-up of pride the ring does not hold adrenaline effect as what OCTAGON is with UFC ;D

What was that about checking his opponents condition after? You guys seen his ferocity when he slammed his foe then strike his face?If it wasn't for Big John, Frank would have pummelled away.He wanted to obliterate that guy in my opinion. ;D

Exactly my sentiments at first but now I do get excited when grapplers do take downs and submission. But of course there are also a lot of grapplers who do nothing on the ground. They are getting their wind back or waiting for the other guy to make a mistake like extend his arm to be open for a lock. And then some just don't know what to do when they are in either the mount or guard position. ;D Hopefully we see better grapplers in the coming replayed UFCs and of course better strikers.

Ano ba nangyari kay Mark Coleman, ganda ng simula niya sa UFC eh.

By the way, nakabili ako dati (di ko na matandaan kung kaylan) ng UFC hits from someone from ebili.com. VHS copy lang (from DVD), I picked up the tape from a store that sells health drugs/medicines in Glorietta. Kilala nyo ba siya? Baka naman ikaw yan kung sino ka man. On Mark Coleman, first, he was beaten by Smith, who surprisingly was adept in "the guard", then he was injured in training (?), worse UFC rule changes did him in.. no more headbutts (a big part of his repertoire to go with his girlie punches, as Maurice Smith described them  ;D )

Pero he finally redeemed himself in Pride Fighting Championship winning the grand prix 2000 where the famous Royce Gracie- Kazushi  Sakuraba took place..

I don't think UFC rejects sina Coleman, Frye, Shamrock etc. when they fought in Pride. There's more money sa Japan kasi... and the rules are similar to early UFC!

Finally, Maurice Smith is put in his rightful place by Kevin Randleman!Tama ba spelling?I'm definitely gonna get flak from Smith fans here. ;D What did we expect?Maurice doing his old style again.Wait it out for the opponent to get tired then do some punches and kicks to make the judges vote for him.Well Maurice, here is the kicker. This opponent outlasted you!Maurice in my opinion, does a good job in the guard meaning he can tie an opponent up so he can't do any real damage. He is able to take punches and whatever you can throw at him and believe me he can really do it effectively.Kevin had a hard time passing Maurice's guard but he definitely was the aggressor.Maurice, in all his UFC fight, failed to show any talent in my opinion other than the one I have stated. He failed to show any knockout punch or any submission holds. He does have a very good guard and stamina, that is all.He may be a champion in kickboxing but that is a whole different sport.Try going head to head with Gary "Big Daddy" Goodrich! Now that is a UFC fighter! He may have lost but he does give it all when he fights! Now Tito Ortiz, that is a whole different ball game.Strategy with technique and power.Of course we know Tito beat Ken in UFC 41!Tama ba?Palabas kaya yong Randleman vs. Rutten fight?Woohoo!

Anybody know what really happend after Tito's fight?I heard in the background somebody shouting to Tito not to let them see him wearing that T-shirt then when the camera focussed on him, he was on the side of the Lions Den corner.Ken was above the railing shouting and pointing at him while Tito had this smug look.Tito has definitely large "Cajones".He did taught Guy Mezger a thing or two. ;D

Randleman on the other hand , came prepared (See the re-action on mister Coleman's end upon Kevin's winning announcement?) Remember? Coleman's streak was vanquished by Maurice?? ;D

nope trust me they are not doubles  ;D i only have one copy of each. Sorry no UFC I dont collect UFC because I just dont like the talent that fight there and the stupid rules. Anyways FYI another UFC member has bolted for pride and that's KEvin Randellman. If the rate of trasfers keeps on going UFC is going out of business.

Wala pa bang Frank Shamrock-Tito Ortiz rematch?

Cheers!!!
Compaq

He is not me! ;D Logan is Logan and Xage is Xage... I just knew the guy (trading some stuff with him back then).. I got like 12 UFC Tapes and 1 Extreme Fighting 2 Video

The Frank Shamrock-Tito Ortiz rematch is impossible as of this moment coz Frank Shamrock is already retired (It was after his marriage he stopped fighting) he is now focused on Hollywood related roles....

TAKEN FROM VARIOUS MMA WEBSITE:
PRIDE FC GOING OUT OF BUSINESS?!

The rumors about PRIDE having severe financial problems continue to flood the Japanese papers, even today. A creepy statement made by new PRIDE boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara was: "The company may have been driven into death by the President's death." Sakakibara admitted that Morish, ita's death has damaged the image of the company. Sakakibara hinted at big-time cuts for management and for any existing contracts with figthers. Sakakibara said that new management will be announced at the end of January. Sakakibara further illustrated on details regarding Morish, ita's stake in the PRIDE company, claiming that Morish, ita had a
50% stake in the company in terms of stock. Sakakibara claims that Morish, ita's wife and child have inherited the stock, but no one knows what will happen with it. PRIDE management already admitted that 2003 would be a tumultous year.

(maybe pride's u.s. invasion will likely be stopped in the process right now, since they're running out of money and maybe MMA fighters)

Also i watch the tape of recent Wrestle-1 pro wrestling show in japan when i LAUGH OUT of my seat when UFC FIGHTERS turned PRO-WRESTLERS (ala shamrock and severn) Kevin Randleman and Marc Coleman {TEAM HAMMER} battle against the GIANT CONVICTS?!. (one of the convicts is a K-1 fighter Jan Nortje) the match ended when mark coleman executed a very sloppy Hurucanrana. on one of the giants.

hmm that seems tough but they had record breaking attendance rcords a couple of months back with 95000 people attending the event. and they average around 50000 - 65000 people an event. So I think they might stay on a litlle longer because of the fact that they have ties also with K1 now.

I think Kevin will be a contender in the following (although delayed telecast) UFC fights. He has great stamina and physique. For a debut fight in the UFC against Maurice, that was considered a good fight for me.
Same for Kevin, I do believe that he will be one to look out for.

Whoa, never thought that the Hammer House boys would stoop down to the level of PRO Wrestling??

You said that right Xage.I guess there's more money in pro wrestling that is why fighters move on to that venue. They should increase the purse so at least there is an incentive for more better fighters to come in.Maybe after a few bouts of risking life and limb, who would't think twice. One cannot eat prestige, we need cash. ;D

Hey Elf,

Actually, I have a few Pride\UFC action figures (to go with my puroresu figs, most notably, Inoki, Liger, Great Muta, Great Nita and Hakushi ). No digicam yet, I won't use a webcam because it won't give justice to the figures. Got most of these from ebay.

Here are pics I found on the web (takun-toys.com) of the figures I have.

Xage you actually consider ultimate fighting the superbowl of MMA? Why is that?  ???  I mean they were the first to introduce MMA in the west.  But that was pretty much it. The competition is mediocre and nobody really takes it that seriously. This is coming from me a guy who trained with Marco Ruas when I was in the US. By the way the other people who teach in my gym were oleg taktarov and Bas Rutten. We were all talking after class one time and one thing they complained about was the level in competition. Same goes for the GRacie camp down there. They love the versatality of Pride and the matches they're given because it ends up being so challenging. I'm not saying that UFC sucks or anything but definitly would have to disagree with you when it comes to regarding them as the superbowl of MMA. I have a feeling that when Tito Ortiz's contract is up we'll be seeing him in Pride

it's nothing much pare the beverly hills jujitsu club which is owned by the three is really near my bro in law's house. So he ended up training there for past time lang he's a actually a Carlos Gracie guy previous to training with them. He's not an NHB guy or anything he trains for physical fitness lang just like the other dudes around in that neighborhood. But I must say that there are man amzing fighters in that gym I mean blue and purple belts that kick a whole lot of ass. I used to train formally for an 1 and 30 a day and they would keep there after class for free to roll around and teach me some more cause I had "potential" daw sayang I didnt stay longer. I might end up brining one of them over for a seminar I'm trying to get some funding from the boys and maybe within this year we might be able to bring marco ruas over to have a short seminar. I'll make a thread if my talks are good.

Just watch a few of Sakuraba's fights on tape.

His two losses to Wanderlei Silva were really brutal. Talagang mismatch the axe murderer just crushed him.

Kahit na he was routed in the first fight, he still  brought it against Silva in the second tussle until he injured his shoulder.  Advantage talaga ang 15 lbs difference.

Nevertheless Sakuraba pa rin ako.  ;D

Anyone played the new pride fc videogame for PS2? it's better than UFC videogame.

also another news from Pride FC (no offense for pride fans) although their videogame is great the plan right now for the Japan MMA promotion [since the death of president] is that there going for more japanese line-up which less gaijin fighters due to that there losing money and also they discontinue the u.s. invasion plan.(taped PPV's nalang) :'(.

as for Zuffa (ufc owner) kunin nalang nila si Wanderlei Silva at REMATCH sila Ulit ni Tito Ortiz.  ;D

Yup Tank is back! Sana naman huminto na siya sa pag buffet and drinking binge. He doesn't have to train how to fight kasi pit fighting siya and he's very good at it.He does have to do a lot of cardio to keep up his stamina and not be just like Tyson na kailangan sa first few seconds knock out na kalabanPedro Rizzo did not look that tough but he has stamina which made him win.Tank could be the best UFC fighter ever if only he would take time out to really train and reduce some of his belly. What more if he hones his skill in boxing and grappling.

Wrestling fever on Solar

SPORTING CHANCE by Joaquin M. Henson
The Philippine Star 02/26/2003

Here’s good news for wrestlemaniacs. Solar TV’s USA (Ultimate in Suspense and Action) cable channel is allocating 12 hours of airtime for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) action every week starting today in response to reverberating public clamor to bring back sports’ enduring version of the telenovela in a big way on the tube.

That’s not all. Solar’s top brass says in April, WWE’s high-rating "Smackdown" show–entertaining seven million viewers in the US alone each week–will be aired on IBC-13.

Fans hooked on ultimate fighting are also in for a treat. Solar USA is putting on four of the fightingest mixed martial arts programs five hours a week starting this Friday. "Thunderbox," a one-hour extravaganza featuring the excitement of boxing and the drama of wrestling, leads off at 8 p.m. on Fridays. This unusual competition awards points to a warrior’s grand entrance and interviewing skills plus gets fans involved via on-line voting.

Then, the weekend mayhem begins. UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) action hits the tube at 10 p.m., Saturdays. It’s wrestling, boxing, martial arts, and street-fighting rolled into one–a full-contact, no-holds-barred battleground where the ultimate objective is to force a submission. Then, at 11 p.m., also on Saturdays, Solar presents Pride Fighting Championship, the hottest combat event in Japan today. This assembles the top fighters from the martial arts disciplines of boxing, muay-thai, wrestling, judo, karate, taekwondo and kickboxing. Everyone competes under the same rules, in the same ring. The result is the most thrilling form of fighting entertainment on earth, "pride" style.

On Sundays, the two-hour K-1 program reels off at 10 p.m. K-1 is the competition that determines the best of the best in the "k" contact martial arts of karate, kickboxing, kungfu, kempo, and kapoera. This is where the world’s heavyweight martial arts specialists congregate to decide who’s who in their bloody business.

But the WWE–a blend of sports and entertainment–takes center stage in Solar USA’s new-age programming.

The WWE is the consolidated entity that Vince McMahon created in late 2001 by fusing the resources of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). "In today’s world, no one tells a story with more drama and excitement than the WWE," boasts McMahon’s drumbeaters. And they’re right. The WWE uses the telenovela approach to keep viewers tuned in week after week, day after day.

WWE programs are shown in seven continents and translated into 13 languages with a global audience of millions. In the US, it generates more than 24 million impressions each week with nine hours of original programming produced weekly, 52 weeks a year. The WWE backs up its TV shows with live events, licensed merchandise, remote broadcasts, home videos, CDs, books and publications. McMahon offers a complete multi-media package that caters to viewers of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and persuasions.

On Solar, the one-hour WWE "Heat" is shown at 9 p.m., Wednesdays, with a 3 p.m. replay, Saturdays. The two-hour WWE "Raw" blasts off at 10 p.m, Wednesdays, with a 4 p.m. replay, Saturdays. The one-hour WWE "Velocity" cracks the tube at 9 p.m., Fridays, with a 3 p.m. replay, Sundays, and the two-hour WWE "Smackdown" checks in at 10 p.m., Fridays, with a 4 p.m. replay, Sundays.

The four shows are different from each other. "Heat" is built on the teen and young-adult market. It’s hosted by Coach and a guest superstar and broadcast live from the site of a pay-per-view event with lots of behind-the-scenes drama."Raw" is described as a "live-action telenovela (that) is the most exciting and unpredictable action-packed show on TV." Aside from matches, "Raw" features celebrity appearances, talent vignettes and interviews. Some of the "Raw" mainstays are the Undertaker and Rob Van Dam.

"Velocity" is hosted by Marc Loyd and Al Snow. It showcases "Smackdown" superstars like The Rock, Kurt Angle, Triple H, Edge, and Chris Jericho. "Velocity" puts on original matches with entertaining storylines. Finally, "Smackdown" brings the action all together on one stage. A recent US survey revealed that more teens tune in to "Smackdown" than any other program on TV.

Pro wrestling has evolved into a class of its own through the years. It isn’t categorized as a sport like boxing or taekwondo. You won’t find pro wrestling results in the sports pages. It borders on showbiz entertainment as wrestlers are often considered more actors than athletes although there’s no doubting their athleticism.

Wrestlers are often described as "cartoon characters" with personalities or images that vary, depending on the script. Hulk Hogan, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Shawn ("The Heartbreak Kid") Michaels, and The Rock are classic examples of this genre. Femme fatales make the storylines more interesting.

Detractors accuse wrestlers of faking their act. But who can deny their athleticism? In pro wrestling, the ring is to wrestlers as the silver screen is to Hollywood actors. They’re all entertainers only in pro wrestling, there is no second take–it’s live all the way–and a mistake could be costly.

Pro wrestlers work on their craft for years before they’re cleared to perform. It’s a dangerous business and if a wrestler isn’t careful, he could be badly injured. Some wrestlers have died in the squared circle–by accident, of course. Hazards of the trade, as they say.

McMahon has been on top of the pro wrestling industry for over 20 years, evolving from a small, regional live-event promoter to the king of a multi-million dollar conglomerate. The phenomenal popularity of pro wrestling all over the world is a tribute to McMahon’s creative genius and uninhibited imagination. And starting today on Solar USA, local fans will find out why the WWE is such an enduring sports entertainment act.

Solar’s commitment to sports is incredible. It signed a four-year package to air more National Basketball Association (NBA) games on a daily basis than any other country in the world. On the Solar Sports channel, there is 24-hour coverage of hoops, tennis, golf, table tennis, beach volleyball, volleyball, and lots, lots more. Solar has also bought air time on free TV to put on NBA games, blockbuster world title fights, and other big events.

Making it all possible are Solar’s key executives–chairman Wilson Tieng, president William Tieng, executive vice president Peter Chanliong, vice president for finance Ronald Tieng, vice president for network development and programming Monet Silerio and vice president for business development and operations Ralph Roy. Also credited for the Solar boom are operations manager for channel programming Chum Cornejo, Edel Pepito of Solar USA programming, Gidget Policarpio who is in charge of Solar Entertainment marketing, and publicist Arnold Arandilla.

Nice one there Edge... though would UFC still be aired as in only until UFC21?

From Sherdog

http://www.sherdog.com/articles/ufc41preview/ufc41preview_01.htm

You've got to hand it to them, Zuffa keeps you guessing. They have 5 titles but they don't have 5 champions and each division has its own tale to tell. The welterweight division is the only class with a proven, respected champion and a wealth of talented contenders to keep things interesting. The lightweight division finishes its tournament and names a replacement champion Friday night. The most recent division to likely lose its champion without an actual physical loss in the cage would be the middleweight division and they may have to begin their search for a champion with UFC 42. The current light heavyweight champion simply won't fight the man who will inevitably dethrone him, whether by strip or by beatdown. And finally, the heavyweight division's revolving door spins both forward with a title defense and backward to welcome in a force from the past.

Even with the UFC divisional champions in various stages of disarray, the UFC 41: Onslaught card is a fairly solid one. Dominated by heavyweights, the Onslaught card brings back the two giants currently under contract, the return of the "Tank", a must-win bout for Pedro Rizzo, and the first title defense of newly crowned champion Ricco Rodriguez. UFC 41 also features a number of lightweight bouts. This includes the title bout, what may prove to be the #1 contender bout, and a prelim that could be exciting as well. All this and the Baroni/Lindland rematch to boot.

The entire card looks like this:

Three-time UFC veteran Yves Edwards climbs back into the cage against Octagon neophyte Rich Clementi

Lightweights Matt Serra and Din Thomas work to seed themselves with a win and earn the first shot at the new title holder

SLO Kickboxing's Gan McGee battles Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Alexandre Dantas in his return after more than two years away from the Octagon

Ruas Vale Tudo fighter Pedro Rizzo tries to get back on track when he faces the RAW Team's Vladimir Matyushenko

In a rematch of middleweight contenders, gym nomad Phil Baroni returns to face Team Quest wrestler Matt Lindland

One goes home with UFC gold as B J Penn and Caol Uno battle for the belt in a rematch of their non-title bout at UFC 34

Zuffa goes to the vault to shake things up and brings in David Abbott to face one-time heavyweight title contender Frank Mir

And in the headliner, newly-crown UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez makes his first title defense against Miletich fighter Tim Sylvia

Suerte naman kayo. ;D

Anyways pinalabas na UFC 20 kagabi at last.Buti hinintay ko.Around 10 na lumabas.Labo ng sked. All I can say was that it was a good line up!What can you say about Bas Rutten vs. Kevin Randleman?Wow!!!! Ang galing ng laban!!! Again Bas Rutten has proven that he is the BEST of the BEST!!!! Walang kapantay! Talagang pinakamagaling siya!!!!............Now if we could just shovel out all the crap that happend in that fight! What the CRAP was that? Panalo si Bas?????? That was so impossible!Parang Onyok fight to ah.Ano ba mga judges na yan?Saan ba nakatingin?Kevin obviously dominated the whole fight! He was the stronger of the two although Bas showed real skill and determination but it came down to pure brute strength! And what the crap is that?Stopping the fight and trying to fix his nose and make it stop bleeding? They spent a lot of time there wherein other fights it's either you get it on or leave the ring.Bas was not even sure if he wanted to continue.Something does not smell right?Mukhang luto from my point of view.Bas may not be aware of it but I think UFC just wanted a new poster boy. That fight was the worst officiating I have ever seen in UFC, I was amazed the audience didn't turn into a mob.Kevin, bow ako sayo.Bas bow din ako, but Kevin was obviously the better and stronger fighter.

Can the Mods even bring back the posts of the previous thread and integrate it here?

Anyways, hopefully we get other Pinoydvd members to watch and appreciate fighting tournaments whether it be on TV or live.Meron mga upcoming fighting events, just wait for news posts.Siyempre maganda rin to encourage members to get into Martial Arts, believe me you will then understand more what you are watching and be awe struck with naked chokes or spinning backfists or what have you. There are a few Pinoydvd members I know that practice MA...OK OK there are only 2! ;Dhehe Hopefully we get more people to try it out especially Arnis, our ancestral MA.Keep on posting fight fans!

Ken vs. Frye!!! Woohoo!!! Ang laki na ni Frye ngayon!Nag play possum si Ken ah!Kala ko knockout na sayang.Galit ang dalawa sa una and insulting each other but tapos the laban halikan/yakapan.hehe ;D I like the fighter Semmy Schilt.Ang tangkad and well built but not that muscular.

yup the belfort fight was before that. wala pa siyang grappling skills siya nun pero pound for pound striking kayang kaya ni belfort si silva yun nga lang silva has awesome kicks. But I will tell you now the best fight I have seen for the past 2 years is the fight of Arona and Murillo ninja rua in PRide. Pucha sobrang galing I saw awesome striking skills against one another and a great technical display and to top it all off there was big amount of hype and bad blood. It's the best. yong grand prix 2000 last sunday ang galing. Matindi yong laban.Yong last fighter, I think from new zealand?Magaling, malakas and daming hostility but lost to the black guy who is a strategic by the book fighter. Now that is what I call kickboxing.IMHO talo pa nila ang mga Thai fighters.

Malapit na Pride FC, sana year 2000 naman ang start.

Elf have you seen Cradle 2 the Grave? Our fave ufc fighters had some serious but short screen time in an underground fighting scene. Tito Ortiz and the Iceman Chuck Liddel went at it worked style with Ortiz winning a bloody battle.

Tito was made to look good by potraying a monster type fighter...  ;D

nope dragon, di ko pa napanood yan.Sa preview nakita ko nga na may caged match.Di ko alam sila Tito pala yon.

Crap wasn't able to watch the fight tourney. :-\

Pinalabas pride 2000 tonight.Ang galing ng Sakuraba vs. Royce fight!Woohoo!!! Kaya pala gustong gusto siya ng crowd. What a comedian! ;D But he does have some real good moves.Royce was just frustrated and gave up.haha!1 hr. 30min ba yon.Di pa ako na bored.Worth it to wait for Sakuraba to make a move. I don't know if Royce saved face by throwing in the towel.I think he should have used up all his gas to fight to the end.He would have walked out proud.

Dude... Antonio "Nino" Schembri is not a lucky SOB.. hehe... hes one the the best bjj artists ... idol of even Bj penn...that was just his 3rd fight.. you should see his bjj matches.. one of the most exciting people to watch.. amazing flexibility and non stop submissions... Whats funny is he won by a strike. actually a  knee to the face .. thats only his 3rd nhb fight..  you can get rickson fights in squadron .. get japan vale tudo... or get the choke video(documentary of his life and behidn the scenes of japan vale tudo early 90's pa tong mga to) to see how rickson really is ..i have a tape where rickson spars his students non stop.(around 50+rnds..). tapping each one of them in secs.. thats around over an hour grappling.. ...

Color me red..  :-[  Just a Sak fan, that's all..  ;D

hey guys, also starting to be a Sakuraba fan myself.hehe. That royce vs sakuraba fight was one of the most entertaining fight that I have seen.I can see why pinapalakpakan si sak.hehe.Galing ng mga antics niya like putting his whole head out of the ropes so royce cant grapple him well (octagon is still the best), resting his head on the corner, smiling at the camera during the fight, etc. But honestly he has some great moves and man he was just playing with royce. He was just pushing him around and his stamina is remarkable!Saw some past Sak fights but was not impressed but I am now!

Hope to see the Schembri fight soon.

Well, if you have just saw Ultimate Japan 1. You will see the real color of Sakuraba.

I guess the guy cant stand losing. He was like mad as hell when John Mc Carthy stopped the fight and awarded it to Conan Silveria.

Good Thing Tank was not bale to reach the finals of UFC JAPAN and the two (Conan & Sakuraba) repeat their fight.. FYI the first encounter was decide as a No Contest.. Geez... well teh fight itslef ended Sakuraba winning UFC Japan

Hey Xage..

They showed 1st part of the URCC last saturday.2nd part will be this coming saturday.Nag dub na lang sila Alvin Aguilar and Quinito Henson for the commentary.

Sakuraba's fight with igor was unbelievable!Meron pa siyang lakas noon.If it was an even match, talo yang si igor.Parang ang bilis nawalan ng stamina.Mark Coleman's striking abilities and stamina improved a lot with this pride fight.Sobrang lakas talaga taong yan and with his improved stamina now, he can achieve more.

They advertised URCC 2 live in philsports arena april 12 sat 7:30.Tickets available in any red corner outlet.

URCC. Oks na rin, kesa naman sa Pinoy Wrestling  ;D... ang layo!!!
Elf, are you going to watch URCC 2 in Philsports?

PrideFC. I was able to watch Coleman and the Japanese. Grabe si Coleman, when the referee is trying to break them, he was shouting "What?... What?...Bullcrap... Bullcrap" hehehehe. can you imagine him yelling at you like that...

K-1. It was a K-1 galore last night. Greatest Knockouts and K-1 USA 2000. Hanep yung mga knockouts, birit na birit talaga ang mga suntok, talagang knockout.

... somehow, I miss UFC.

UFC vs. Pride ... for me, UFC.... the Octagon.
UFC vs. K-1    ... it's obvious - K-1.

Cheers!!!

Si Mark kala ko mag walkout, na warning pa agad.hehe.He was definitely the better fighter.

crap na miss ko K1 last sunday.

Just watched pride 8.Sak vs. Royler? Gracie.Talo na naman gracie.Woohoo!Controversial pa.I assume na somebody else stopped the fight other than gracie's corner because they were complaining afterwards(in jap kasi). If you would look at the key lock Sak was applying, the usual and I'm assuming the more painful technique was the other way around which means that the forearm should have been going under the elbow towards the thigh area.In Royler's case it was going to the head area but I guess if you bend it far enough the shoulders should pop. What do you think mdsaint3?

Yes Xage, I also had fun watching that bout, ('was rooting for the boxer). Grabe yung stamina nung boxer, a choke was applied to him... namumula na nga yung mukha, pero nakawala pa rin.

Quinito mentioned that he know the boxer, "Pinoy" pa nga daw ang pangalan dati, ngayon ay "Larry" na (forgot the surname).

Title: Re:Mixed Martial Arts Thread : UFC - PRIDE - K1 - URCC
Post by: aikigrappler on Apr 14, 2003 at 09:26 AM
The URCC 2 last Saturday was a phenomenal success in my opinion. The fights were great, there was not much delay in the starting of the event and 90% of the fighters were up to par.The 10% seem to not know what a NHB competition is.If one is a striker then learn some counters on grappling and vice versa. This is already the standard operating procedure. But congratulations to all the fighters that showed up (there was one fighter who did not show ;D).Stepping into the ring is half the battle.Takes courage to do that. Sayang si Larry (boxer), nanalo siya URCC1.Natalo siya this time.Choked out if I remember right.Si Cobra din was knocked out when his head was slammed into the ring. That was one of the better fights. The Ifugao wrestler who did JKD/Yaw Yan style of kicking was really awesome and lightning fast!

*Here's my comments from PEX*
Quote
Negative comments muna regarding URCC2 baka makalimutan ko.Positive naman bukas. But there was definitely more pluses than minuses this time around.I would say the competition improved a lot.

(according to one of the Pekiti Tirsia Manila Pitbull member, Nico is only 185 lbs. and not 210 lbs.)
Not to be biased but I agree with Veynn. I was looking at Nico and comparing size with TJ.He was definitely lighter than stated. Not only that some of the fighters looks like they were fighting in different weight classes.Like the one with the kung fu style hair and another really thin guy. They were like under their weight class. If Nico was 185 then he is middleweight in UFC classification and TJ obviously heavy weight.Maybe the PTK guys can enlighten us bakit pumayag sa ganitong setup where weight, aside from skill and stamina is one of the major factors.

The officiating of I think only 2 fights were questionable wherein the referee stopped the fight too soon and let them continue.Bullcrap is what I say.The officiating could be improved.Maybe get somebody who actually has MMA experience. The referee who was also in URCC 1 is supposed to be a Judo brown belt right?PAJA does not allow brown belts to officiate in any kind of match.Only blackbelts.I could be wrong though.

About the rules of fighting gear. They had to take of Larry's rubbershoes in the ring.He was obviously not informed that it had to be barefoot. Then there was this guy who went to the ring without gloves and had to be fitted there. He lost a few seconds after.

Maybe somebody with access to the URCC rules can post it here so we all can comment if there were illegal actions in the ring.Did not see any elbows or blows to the back of the head or kicks to head when the fighter was down.

Bukas post ko din good points which definitely out weighs the negative by a big margin. Over all very good event. The fighters this time much more well versed in their styles.Cant keep what happend to Cobra out of my mind.Siya yong boxer na pinaikot a air right?Pag land niya knockout na.Tulog.Grabe galing ng kalaban.Forgot name.hehe. And like what BNG said Ifugao Wrestling rules!!! Grabe kicks!!!JKD ata yon ah.
Elf  8)

wwf collector,
TJ won the fight. The first minutes of the fight, Nico was pounding TJ left and right and the latter kind of look woobly but then TJ clinched Nico and took him down to the mat.He then continued to secure a full mount. While Nico was unable to turn TJ over, TJ pounded him till the ref stopped the fight.

Papi,
Any more insights pare?Behind the scenes?Cobra was brought out in a stretcher, how is he?What's his condition after the fight?

Not that good Cards in UFC 42, but I say...

1. The Loss of Robbi Lawler was a shocker ( The guy submitted coz the stiff kick he received was dreaded and he cant continue)

2. Matt Hughes still shows why he is the CHAMP, his opponent was amazing too though  Matt bounce back at the ending round...

The best I saw was the preview for the upcoming UFC 43...

Iceman Chuck Lidel vs The Natural Randy Coutoure
Ken Shamrock will fight also
Tank vs Kimo

So what can u say about that? they might be dinosaurs in the Octagon, but the name itslef holds memories in UFC history

Well, I guess Randy Couture showed who was the best pound for pound mma fighter in the World... at 40, this guy does not have the glamour or skill of Iceman or Tito but he showed today that he has the true heart of a warrior!  :) the same size with ortiz but boy did he show some heavyweight power...

Hey elf,

text mo ko next time pag meron na namang schedule para dito ka na sa bahay manood.. Alanganin kasi kanina di ko alam yung time paggising ko, start na.  :(

UFC®, SPIKE TV® LOOK FOR REAL CONTENDER IN THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER™ 16 Athletes Compete To Win Ultimate Fighting Championship® Contracts Willa Ford To Host New Reality Series, Premiering Monday, Jan. 17, 2005

LAS VEGAS – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® and Spike TV® have assembled 16 athletes from across North America to determine who has what it takes to earn a UFC contract in The Ultimate Fighter™, a new and exciting reality-based television series.

The original series, hosted by top recording artist and model Willa Ford, premieres on Monday, Jan. 17 at 11 p.m. (check local listings) following WWE Monday Night Raw and runs for 15 exciting episodes, including a LIVE event. Craig Piligian (co-executive producer of Survivor I, II and III) serves as co-executive producer.

New episodes premiere Mondays with encore presentations on Fridays (midnight-1 a.m. EST/PST), on Saturdays (7 p.m. EST/PST) and on Sundays (5 p.m. EST/PST). Competitors in The Ultimate Fighter are not voted off the island, fired by a CEO, or eliminated in a rosy ceremony. Instead, the ones sent home are those who lose in the Octagon® or are sent packing by their coach.

“Sixty-year-old Sylvester Stallone may be looking for a contender, but the UFC is looking for a champion,” boasts Dana White, UFC President. “The Ultimate Fighter goes behind the scenes to see what it takes when 16 hard-core guys from around the country live, train, and fight together – all with one ultimate goal.”

Viewers will be able to follow the 16 fighters as they train, workout and live together. At the end of each week, one fighter from each of the two teams must fight in the Octagon® until only two remain in each of the two weight divisions. In the end, The Ultimate Fighter will be decided by a competition match -- a head-to-head fight inside the Octagon – LIVE on Spike TV.

The competitors are all accomplished athletes, disciplined in the sport of mixed martial arts which combines boxing, wrestling, judo, karate, kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu. For seven weeks during taping, the competitors were under the strict supervision of two of the most successful and well-known UFC fighters and trainers: UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture and UFC Light Heavyweight #1 Contender Chuck Liddell.

In each episode, the competitors also will compete in team “Challenges” designed to push the fighters to the edge of their physical and mental capabilities. The challenges revolve around old-school training techniques, physical stamina and mental strategy. The team that wins the challenge controls which combatants must fight and face elimination.

The Ultimate Fighter was taped in Las Vegas at the UFC Training Center™ under the supervision of Piligian, the show’s creator and co-executive producer. Piligian, from Pilgrim Films and Television, also is known for his work on American Chopper, American Hot Rod and American Casino.

Robert Riesenberg (executive producer of NBC's The Restaurant) of Full Circle Entertainment also serves as co-executive producer. Riesenberg is president and CEO of Full Circle Entertainment, a New York Company. Full Circle Entertainment is an independent production company specializing in developing and producing programming that services the marketing needs of advertisers.
