Title: Doctor Who
Post by: Phobos on Aug 25, 2006 at 11:09 AM
I've been searching for a Doctor Who thread, but nothing turned up. Which leads me to believe that I'm the biggest geek here, and quite possibly the only one who loves this show to bits.

Please restore my faith in humanity and tell me I'm not the only one.

Also, Billie Piper may be the ugliest cute girl on TV right now. Everything looks ok, but she should return her eyebrows to the monkey she stole them from.

Getting to it soon but I saw the pilot, Rose. It reminded me of Hitchhiker's Guide... goofy sci-fi. Liked it and hope it gets better. Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper's chemistry echoes Hollywood's best screwball comedies.  Wasn't Piper a pop star back in the 90s? I think I've heard her name before in Casey Kasem's show.

Heard that Eccleston quit the show in its second season. Hope the regenerated actor is as manic as he was.

Due to some retarded reason, I got to watch the second season of this new series before I started the first season. And I assure you that David Tennant is in some ways better than Eccleston.

Although Eccleston looks like he can kill you with a spoon. And I miss that.

L:ooking forward to Tenant. Eccleston rocks. And, yes, Piper's cute. Do not mind bushy eyebrows, she only needs to have a comfy rear cushion.

Don't look now, but Piper's out too. She'll be replaced by another girl for Series 3. And I was just getting used to her eyebrows.

nanood ako ng Dr. Who nung bata pa ako. I loved the theme song. Speaking of old british sci fi Tv shows, does anyone remember a series called "Sapphire & Steel"?

I liked Remington Steele.

Dr. Who did well in this year's Hugos, apparently.

Yep...she was signed on the same record label as the now-defunct Atomic Kitten...her handlers  thought she'd be Britain's own Britney Spears.   However once Billie Piper set her eyes on the thespic path, she never looked back.

She also appeared in "The Calcium Kid" opposite a pre-"PotC" Orlando Bloom (caught the film on HBO sometime back - rather funny in a docu sort of way).

Holy Shit! I may be in the minority here, but I think the new sidekick is way cuter than Billie Piper. Her name is Freema Agyeman:

To anybody who've seen the Season 2 finale already, she made an appearance as one of the casualties. But she'll play a totally different character for Season 3, and the similarities in appearance will be explained apparently.

I saw some episodes back in the '80s, but I can't remember the local channel. I do remember Sapphire and Steele, though, as well as The Avengers (not exactly sci-fi, but there are fantasy elements, not to mention Diana Rigg) and even UFO.

Sapphire & Steel was great, I really loved it. It was like a pre-cursor to "The X Files". I bought the whole DVD box set last year and I love it.

Oy, so the second season isn't airing in Manila? The Cybermen episodes are pretty good, but wait'll you get to The Impossible Planet. Talk about Empty Child to the nth power...

It's not airing in Manila at all. We get by through downloads.

In series 2 I just loved "The Girl in the Fireplace." Fanboys didn't like it because the Doctor was a bit out of character but who cares? It's a lovely story.

The impossible planet is a bit Event Horizon-ish but it's good. And the second part is pure Who.

Right now I'm watching the Torchwood spin-off with Jack Harkness
Title: Re: Does nobody here watch Doctor Who?

I watched the first two episodes of Torchwood then I decided that it's not worth my time. And apparently I made the right choice since the show hasn't been generating a lot of good press.

Thank God it's almost Christmas. Almost time for another helping of Doctor Who.

Oh, I think Impossible is much better written and acted than Event Horizon (which I think is a ripoff of Frederick Pohl's Gateway).

Here's a blog post about The Satan Pit (http://mattzollerseitz.blogspot.com/2006/12/doctor-who-season-two-ep-9-satan-pit.html) Has links to Impossible Planet and if you search the blog you'll see reviews of previous Who episodes.

Caught up with the series again. I find the current companion, Donna Noble more engaging than Rose and Martha so far. UK is currently airing a Steven Moffat episode. The episodes he has written for the series have been the highlights of the revitalized version. Can't wait till he eventually takes over as series runner.

David McCallum?

Grabe naman ang career trajectory niya...he's gone a long way from his Ilya Kuryakin days in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."

Aside from appearing in "NCIS" opposite Mark Harmon, he is also an in-demand voice talent whose CV includes "Ben 10: Alien Force" and "Batman: The Brave and the Bold"

seriously hope this pushes through.  from rottentomatoes;

DOCTOR WHO AND THE CASE OF THE RECURRING MOVIE RUMOR

Ah spring, it's an annual event as reliable as the recurring rumor of plans for a Doctor Who theatrical movie. Since Star Trek proved an old sci-fi show that got started in the 1960s can be turned into a successful movie 40 years later, why not Doctor Who, right? The revived show continues to be a success both in England and here in America on the Sci Fi network, with fans awaiting the arrival of the eleventh incarnation of The Doctor, to be played by Matt Smith starting in 2010. In the meantime, however, the most recent Doctor was played by Andy Tennant, who will be playing The Doctor in two upcoming episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures. In an article about that appearance, a BBC Films representative confirmed that a "script is in development" for the long-awaited Doctor Who movie. There are no details other than that, except that the movie is "a long time away," which means that by the time it's ever made, the star will probably be Matt Smith, or maybe even whoever plays the 12th incarnation.

Just finished watching The Waters of Mars TV Special , it's nice for them to show the dark side of the doctor, which leads a crucial decision to the last 2 episodes of the series... Funny, I can't wait for next 2 episodes but I also don't want to see David Tennant and Russel T. Davies last farewell to the Dr. Who series... :(

Dr. Who is another one of those "touch me and I'll infect you" thrillers, a la 28 Days Later (done better here, I think). That said, the last oh, ten or twenty minutes is a side of the Doctor we've never seen before, and a moral issue he's never dealt with so directly. Plus the sound of mortality has begun its toll. This Doctor's days are numbered.

Cool! "Blink" is also the episode I use on converting some friends to a rabid Time lord followers which is weird coz Tennant (The Doctor) wasn't even on the lead role on that episode, that only tells that Steven Moffat's script is truly what would the 9th doctor says? Oh BRILLIANT! ;D

Anyone seen 11? How is he?

Very recent watcher here. Started with 9 (whom I am totally in love with). Still can't get past 10's first six episodes. Everyone I know who's a fan told me to stick with him. He's just...too pretty. Also not happy with his shouting. That Cybermen ep bored the hell out of me. I'm thinking of going straight to S3 already.

11's ok.  it's his adventures im having trouble with. not as mindblowing as 10's imo.  case in point, 11's angels adventure pales with blink, and it was a two parter to boot.

+1 via sonic screwdriver

I really like 11. I think Eccleston and Tennant can definitely act circles around Matt Smith, who seems to rely more on quirkiness rather than betraying true feelings. Still, the quirks - do - work, and he's very likable, so I feel he is very much suited for the job.

And I think Amy and Rory are excellent companions.

I have a love/hate relationship with David Tennant. I think he's a great actor and when he does show off the Doctor's human side (Human Nature, The End of Time), it's heartbreaking. The problem I think is that he was lost under the shadow of Billie Piper's Rose from the very moment we were introduced to him, so he sort of had to fight for our hearts harder than Eccleston. It's sorta like hanging out with your close friend who introduces you to a new boyfriend after you spent so much time getting to know and liking her ex. All my attention will probably be on my friend instead of this stranger. Lucky for Matt Smith, his was pretty much a complete reboot

I also don't like the overall storytelling treatment for Tennant's Doctor. The whole love angle bored me, and its conclusion almost made me stop watching. The whole "Nobody appreciates the Doctor" theme made my skin crawl. I'm so glad the Matt Smith series is more focused on this Doctor's personal conflicts; it truly made me care about him.

It's true that 11's stories didn't seem very powerful individually, but I have to say there weren't as many stinkers as 10 had either. And overall - in terms of story arc and overall character development - I thought the storytelling was brilliant.

And I absolutely love Dr. Song's scene with a Dalek in "The Big Bang". Love it!

Can't wait for Season 6! Aren't they coming out this month?

Thanks for the 11 input :)  I find Matt Smith fascinating to look at. Parang mas minachete pa ang mukha kesa kay Ecclesboy (whom I superlove)

I know a number of fans on some forums who dislike the Ten/Rose tandem and were all WTH with TenII. I'm going to give S2 Ten a couple more chances and probably just choose some highly rec'd S3 epis then go to S4 (I hear Ten and Donna are great).

Post by: MultipleAngles on Jun 10, 2011 at 03:01 AM
More like "I had that in my list of possible reveals!"  ;D - which, come to think of it, is arguably one of this episode's weaknesses. Enough time has passed for a viewer's wayward thoughts to somehow come to that possibility, there's a danger that the reveal's OMG factor can get watered down, especially since the previous episode had what I believed to be a more jaw-dropping reveal

I felt the episode packed way too much in one hour for me to really enjoy any single element (Although the pre-title sequence was brilliant). Too many new allies that I didn't get to develop a liking to, too many new enemies I didn't get to feel threatened by. Plus For a supposed dark point in the Doctor's life, it was a bit underwhelming. Comrades dying is pretty much SOP for the Doctor, and the idea of the whole universe being afraid of the Doctor was already introduced in the previous season. I'm guessing things are meant to go further downhill for the Doctor?

Title: Re: Doesn't anybody here watch Doctor Who?

I'm with Phobos; yes it's jammed with too much stuff, a lot of it good (I love the Silurian lesbian and the Sontaran nurse, and I love Rory's macho stride across the opening sequence), but beyond the twist that's long in coming (I guessed it too, the moment we hear the baby's name) there is that twist no one saw coming and the fact that he's raised so high and brought so low--to apologize to Amy for his failure.

And what made the episode for me was that naughty/embarrassed look on his face when he realized just what River is saying. So--it's not the twists, so much as the reaction to those twists that Moffat seems to be emphasizing here.
Title: Re: Doesn't anybody here watch Doctor Who?
Post by: MultipleAngles on Aug 24, 2011 at 09:09 PM
there is that twist no one saw coming

What twist was that, Noel? Maybe having not seen it coming, I actually missed it entirely  ;D.

Still feel the episode was too much of a mess to really enjoy, but I'm thinking it comes with producers experimenting with a new episode format. And you never know, by the season ender, Mr. Moffat will prolly work his magic and make Doubting Thomases like me realize these perceived failings were actually brilliance in disguise

That said, the Doctor is IN this weekend!

God Complex was probably my favorite of series 6 so far. Great story and premise, great acting all around (especially from Karen Gillan - much more subtle and effective than in "The Girl Who Waited", I feel).

This episode wore its heart on its sleeve compared to other series 6 episodes, I admit, but I think that's what made it great. There's a debate that former head writer Russell T. Davies needed Steven Moffat to balance his sappy material with something sharper - and I wholeheartedly agree. But I recently toyed with the idea that, with the title of head writer now hovering over HIS head, maybe Steven Moffat needs a Russell T. Davies of his own. This episode makes me more inclined to think so.

For anyone who is still planning to watch the season finale of Doctor Who, I suggest skipping the recap at the beginning. It sort of gives away a critical twist.

Apart from that, I very much enjoyed this episode. Still think the season as a whole is only better than Russel T. Davies last run, including those awful specials. But I'm very much excited with what Moffat and crew have planned for 2013.

And, Amy + "eyepatch" = rowr

^ I like Confidential. I think it's pretty in-depth naman. You basically get a look at how the episode was made, preprod to postprod - from the point of view of key people: the producers, director, writer, actors, production managers, technical directors, animators, etc.

So, if there's a particular episode that you enjoyed, or if it's written or directed by someone you respect, you're sure to get some great insights from the connected Confidential :). I really enjoy it because the 3 Doctor Who leads have such excellent chemistry, it's fun to watch them goof off.

It's basically 43 minutes devoted to behind the scenes, interviews and other features per episode. Sadly due to budget cuts, The BBC recently announced that Confidential will no longer be in production. The last one aired after the series 6 finale.

Thanks guys. Any recommended ep from season 6 of Confidential to get my feet wet?

I only have 3 episodes, starting with the one for "girl who waited" but have seen snippets for "blink" and DT's farewell. Season 6, Episode 13 is a must since it has a 13 min. segment about River's timeline from series 4 to 6 (in the proper chronological order)

^ I only started in Series 6, so I can't recommend any Confidential before that. Maybe you can start there, or start fresh with Series 7's Confidentials next year, then work your way back :)

Two awesome sendoffs from the Russel T. Davies production of Doctor Who. I've only started watching the new Doctor Who series 2 years ago, but I have to say I felt super nostalgic after watching this. Seeing Elisabeth Sladen all healthy and game got me teary-eyed.

Honestly I find Amy and Rory annoying as the Doctor's companions, So the Arrival of Clara Oswin Oswald as the new companion makes this series more interesting for me again.

oh and she's very cute too!  ;D

11th doctor, Matt Smith? sa Doctor Who fandom kasi si Tennant ang 10th and 11th Doctor apparently since he did regenerate once and his face didn't change.

anyWHO, enjoy sa panonood sir. panoorin mo rin yung mga Christmas Specials and the 4 Doctor Who specials before Tennant regenerates into Matt Smith. ;D

Yup Matt Smith. Sige, I'll find the 4 doc who specials. Medyo mahirap kse i-identify yung mga titles. Yung 2005 akala ko year 2005 pero parang series 5 ba yun?
Title: Re: Doctor Who

2005 was the start of the new generation Doctor Who which is the Series 1. sa UK kasi hindi season ang tawag nila kundi series. 2005 is yung kay Christopher Eccleston aka The Ninth Doctor. Tennant was 10th and 11th while Matt Smith was the 12th then Peter Capaldi is the incoming 13th Doctor.

End of Series Nine of Doctor Who and it's about as good a season of TV as I've seen of the revived show--dark, atmospheric, intricate and funny. And Peter Capaldi's amazing: I've never seen a more expressive pair of pursed lips, and a more demonic pair of arching brows.

Random thoughts while watching S11 ep1 "The Woman Who Fell To Earth":

Upon seeing Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor:

It's BLONDE Anne Curtis!!!!
David Tennant, take off that dodgy-looking blonde wig 😄😀😄 (you're not FOOLING us!!!)

"Uuurrrggghhhh, I hate empty pockets!!!" I guess some of Peter Capaldi's sarcasm must have rubbed off onto her

"We don't get aliens in Sheffield" - so how do you explain these blue onion-shaped things!!!!

"She's got TWO separate pulses!!!" - Grace

DNA bombs!!!!

That part where JW's Doctor MacGyvers herself a Sonic Screwdriver - priceless!!!!

"Sonic screwdriver...more of a Sonic Swiss Army Knife..." - The Doctor (now with added Sheffield steel!!!)

"Halloween's next month, mate!!!" - random drunk picking off unwanted bits from a discarded takeaway

"See? Always ask a bus driver!" - Graham

Aliens....who are also grammar Nazis (and cheap cheats to boot!!!)

"...I'm cravin' for a fried-egg sandwich" - sure beats fish sticks and custard any day!!!

"These legs definitely USED to be longer!!!" - the Doctor, again

The whole ransom-your-transport-keys trick - always works!!!

"I am the Doctor....sorting out fair play throughout the universe. Now please get off this planet - while you still have a choice"

The new DW theme....it's a throwback to the classic Delia Derbyshire arrangements (thankfully - been tiring of Murray Gold's orchestral bombast

‘Doctor Who’ Loses Jodie Whittaker and Showrunner Chris Chibnall After Three Seasons

The first female “Doctor Who” is leaving, the BBC confirmed Thursday.

Jodie Whittaker, who played the 13th doctor, has been in the role since 2017. She will leave after her third season. She will appear in a six-part event serial as well as three specials before her time on the show is up.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall, who cast Whittaker as the first female doctor in the show’s history, is also leaving the series, he confirmed.

The 13th series of Doctor Who will air towards the end of 2021. The three specials will follow in 2022 (which also happens to be the centenary of the BBC) starting on Jan. 1 with a spring and fall special also in the works.
