Title: DVD Shopping in Hong Kong
Post by: trekker on Nov 26, 2001 at 06:05 AM
Hi, guys

Just thought I'd let you know about this super DVD store I found in Hong Kong: HMV Store located at Peking Road, Hong Kong (two blocks from the Holiday Inn).

I just thought I'd died and gone to DVD heaven. The four-storey store was totally devoted to CDs, VCDs, and DVDs. The entire third storey was allocated for DVDs alone.

First of all, the categories were complete as you could find them. Beyond the standard
-action, romance, adventure, comedy, classic, science-fiction - there were categories like Asian, TV series
(Farscape, X-Files, Avengers, Inspector Morse, Twilight Zone, etc.), and even adult. Then all DVDs of all categories were lined up alphabetically.

And you really had to scrutinize every single DVD on the shelf, so as not to miss out on a long-lost title. Sure, there were the standard new releases (Planet of the Apes, Phantom Menace), but there were a lot of titles that I
couldn't find in Manila like Citizen Kane, Lion in Winter, Les Miserables 10th anniversary concert, Chariots of Fire---even really old TV movies like Boy in the Plastic Bubble (remember
pre-Saturday-Night-Fever John Travolta in a space suit?) and the First Power. Whatever title I could think of, I could find.

My budget only allowed me to buy four actually: Fiddler on the Roof Special Edition, Star Trek: TMP Director's Edition, and a couple of DVDs of the original series.

But if I were to suddenly win the lotto, I'm sure my selections would take half of the library.

The cost is a little reasonable. It's what you would pay if you were to order from Amazon. Standard cost is HK $158 or P1,300.00. The in-demand titles like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek: TMP shoot up to 1,800.00. They also have a few items on sale, like buy 3 for HK 250.

In case you drop by in Hong Kong one of these days, pass by HMV. It's worth the visit! You can spend hours in it!

Hi trekker,

i know what you mean. i was just there last june and they have so much DVDs there, to the point na nahilo ata ako cos i didnt know where to start.  anyway i hope you found some nice ones there. only problem the last time i was there was that they mixed the R1 DVDs with the R3s , so its really difficult for guys like me or a lot of guys here that i know who only collect R1s. you should've tried one of those smaller shops in the bangketa along peking rd or canton rd , which had DVD's cos i saw some really nice R1s there. just be sure to make them "barat" since they raise the prices of those hard to find DVD's

BTW, do you own that trekker shop in Alabang Town Center? i just remember a shop there tagging that name.

I know exactly what you mean trekker, I've been there before too. I always leave HMV 5-10 pounds heavier than when I came in ;)

By the way, is it legal in HK to sell R1s?  Why not here?  ???

My guide did advise me to try those corner shops, but most of the DVDs in them had Hong Kong characters, and truth to tell, I wasn't that sure about the security concerning credit cards.

No, I don't. How I wish. :)

Yes, I think so. HMV had a lot of R1 DVDs.

Stupid question: IT'S ILLEGAL TO SELL R1 DVDs here? How come I was able to buy my Jesus Christ Superstar 2000 in Electronic Depot, Libis, and it was in R1? :-/

DVD Heaven Indeed!!! ;D

Last time I was there, DVD's were just coming in and racks on the 4th floor had LD's. It was still heaven, but KPS at that time was the preferred store - better prices, but HMV was closely competing with their promos (KPS closed a few years back ???).

My father in law was there earlier this year and brought back a few DVD's one of them was an R1 "Central Station".

I would surmise that they ignore the "Region" policies and just source stock where practical. After all, HK is a place where almost everything is available. Plus their VRB equivalent just rates the movies, unlike here where they go one step further and protect distributors.

Like clockwork chico states in his post, in this country it's only illegal if you get caught. ;)

I don't know the specifics concerning the legality of selling r1 dvds but I found something out:

Though they sell r1 dvds openly in their store, I went to their website and no r1 dvds are even remotely mentioned!

I don't know what this means but it's kind of "funny".

I dunno if I've posted this before.

But so far I haven't literally seen any law that bans us from selling R1 DVD's in this country.  Is there such a law written in print.

And if there is one, we should advocate for the removing of this law.  I want my R1 DVD's!

hehehe

I agree with you wholeheartedly joeypogi, but there's gotta be a reason why everyone selling r1s are "patago".

i don't think there is a law banning sale of R1, the reason why patago the sale of R1 is because it doesn't have the VRB seal, which u would get by paying TAXES on the R1s.

i doubt that with tax, anybody would buy the R1s, they would be twice as expensive for sure.

Am going to Hong Kong next week. Where should I go shopping for DVDs? Are there any stores aside from the big ones like HMV, etc. that I should check out? Last time I was there was in 1999.

i was just at hongkong a week ago. and as usual, i was able to purchase around 50 R1 DVDs :-[, most of them from HMV. thay had a 3 for $400 promo, as well as a card where if you purchase around $2000 worth, you get a $150 rebate. i was able to claim it twice  ::) . there is also a store about 100 meters from holiday inn which sold region 1 DVDs too, they sold titles for about $170 each which HMV sold for $200++ . their normal price was $198 but i was able to bring it down to $170 since, yup you guessed it, i purchased several from him. there is also a great DVD store in the huge mall at admiralty, i was able to see a lot of OOP titles there but alas, i had little money left  :'( . next time i go, i will really be bringing a list  ;)

hello paltik :)

would you happen to know till when the HMV promo will last? my sister is headed for hong kong at the start of june eh ;) also are the dvds there clearly marked as to what region they come from? or are the reg1s and reg3s mixed up together? she's not that familiar with dvds so she might get confused :P

with regards to that other store, would you happen to remember what the name of the mall and store is? also what kind of oop titles did you find there? any criterions?

i'd appreciate any help... thanks ;D

hi hajime, it says on the card that its valid for 6 months, so i guess its til november  ???

regarding hmv, they mixed R1s with R3s so its pretty confusing and time consuming to find the R1s. although i found a way of knowing which are R1s. just have her look at the top of the DVD, most of the R1 DVDs have a sticker with the title on top, then she can check the R1 logo from the back (just to double check) ;). there are lots of OOP titles there. i was even able to get firestarter and some limited edition disney titles. i didnt see any OOP criterions though, but there a few CC titles anyway. there was Salo (not criterion) but i believe its in Region 2  :)

about the other store, i dont exactly know the address and the name of the sho ???p, i only know how to get there . when you're inside holiday inn, dont pass the entrance going to nathan, instead pass the back where the buses are. then just turn left, and then right at the fork, then she'll already see it on the left side na madaming display ng DVDs. the guy there sells everything from about $198-$238 but tell her to make him barat. i was able to get R1s there for as low as $150.  hope this helps  ;)

There are now two discounted price promos at HMV. Many titles are in a newer "2 For $200" promo, so it's much cheaper.

Regarding the rebate card, though, I suppose they changed the quota. To get your $150 rebate, you must purchase $3250 worth of DVDs. So I was only able to claim it once.  ::)

HMV truly is DVD Heaven, but their prices are quite higher when compared to other shops. For example, Hey! Mr. Producer was selling there for $250; at CD Warehouse at The Gateway, the same title was being sold for only $210. Similarly, several titles in HMV's "2 For $200" sale were being sold for just $78 each at CD Warehouse.

But HMV's selection is unmatched, with rare out-of-print titles and discs from Regions 1-4 sitting next to each other on the shelves. As ridiculously high as my original budget for DVDs was, I found myself even adding to it and cutting down on my clothes/food allotment.  ;D

Just a couple of years ago, HMV had only half of one wall dedicated to DVD. It kept getting bigger every few months. On my visit last week I was not surprised to see that they now have one whole DVD floor, at least (their Tsim Sha Tsui store; the ones in Causeway Bay and Central are not as big). Not to mention their great music selection too.

HMV has always been organized well. Still, the best advice I could think of is to make sure you compile a list before you travel to HK. Otherwise you could lose a whole day inside HMV. I have a friend who never went anywhere else the whole time he was there, except to eat. Come to think of it, PinoyDVD members might consider that as normal behavior!

I actually had a list, but ended up getting NOTHING on it, since I found titles I didn't even know were already out on DVD (turns out they were already released on Region 2 or 4, but haven't even been announced on R1) that I wanted even more.

I guess HMV was the store I visited the most times during my HK trip (2 weeks ago). Pero, I ended up not buying any DVDs from them! Other stores, like CD Warehouse in Harbour City, Hong Kong Records in Pacific Place, and the various nameless video shops scattered around turned out to be much cheaper kasi. HMV's prices were around 10-60 HK$ higher, and converted to pesos, malaki-laki na rin yung difference. It really paid off to compare prices before buying, naka-save yata ako ng a total of HK$300. Buti na lang I was able to control myself when I landed on HMV TST's 3rd floor (last time I was there 2 cabinet pa lang DVD). Sobrang nakakalula.

But slowhand, I kinda think that your friend missed out on a lot by just sticking to HMV. He should have looked at the other DVD stores too. HMV is big, but not THAT big (even the biggest branch), for you to need to spend all your time there. Masyado ata siyang na-hypnotize by all the shiny displays. I was able to case their entire collection in maybe a total of 4 hours (roughly spaced out over multiple visits) and still have time for other DVD stores and shopping for other stuff and sight-seeing.

Granted, HMV had a lot of titles I wanted that the other stores didn't carry, pero medyo out-of-my-league yung prices of those DVD kaya next trip na lang siguro kapag nakapag-ipon ulit.

The weird thing pala about the prices of audio CDs in HK is they're really inconsistent. Different stores, different prices. HMV is in the middle price-wise. At CD Warehouse, they have the cheapest prices for some titles, but other titles are marked-up. Pabalik-balik ako from these 2 stores to compare, buti na lang medyo magkalapit. Hong Kong Records offered the most consistently cheapest prices for audio CDs.

Which is a better place for Region 1 DVD hunting? Hong Kong or Singapore?  Ive been to Singapore last month. And as much as I liked to tour around the whole place, time wouldnt permit me to, most Pinoys would think that Singapore can easily be toured within one or two whole days since it's smaller than Metro Manila-wrong thing! The place was just so full of tourist and tourist attractions, that I actually passed up DVD shopping, there was a mall somewhere in Orchard Road that fooled me, since It had such a huge banner up front reading: DVD's and CD's up to 75% off Sale and I could easily see those DVD racks from the outside but once I got in  you could only find around 30-40 titles of DVD's and most where movie releases within 2 years ago, Im a Vintage collector. There must have been a store around Singapore similar to HMV in Hong Kong that caters to the DVD market. The problem with us Pinoy tourists in HK or Singapore is that we cant often budget our time between Sightseeing and Shopping, thus passing up a lot of opportunities. But one thing I discovered  about Singapore was that it may indeed be a expensive place, but they are very cheap with electronics not to mention a wide variety to choose from.
By the way does anyone here know of good DVD shops in Guam?

;D HMV is the way to go! I've been to HMVs in HK and NY, they're the best! Guess what? In Manhattan, the Virgin Mega Store sucked! HMV was the way to go! they Had most of the DVDs I wanted! Then in HK, the Tower Records I found there sucked too! HMV was the way to go! There are two HMVs in HK I think. One is near Causeway and the other one I went too is in Tsim Sha Tsui near Nathan road. Guess what, the HMV in HK is unmatched even by the Manhattan HMV! HK HMV is the best!

But it is true, HMV prices are higher! Although I found this obscure DVD store in Times Square NY called Blow Out Video! Their prices are slightly lower! and then if you're looking for sale price old releases, go look in K-Mart where DVDs can go as low 8.00 USD. But always remember, there's sales tax in the US where NY has the highest at 8.25%, SF 8%. Try Jersey...3.25% sales tax!

To top it all of, HK HMV is our little piece of heaven.

There a lot of DVDs there all right, but they were much too expensive. A friend of mine usually buys DVDs from HMV. Last month, my friend went and bought the Toy Story 3-disc box-set, Simpsons Season 2 (r2), and Memento (2-disc Special Edition).

A week or two after that, I was able to go to HK also, checked out the HMV store and yes... it was sort of a DVD heaven. Tried to remember the prices of the DVDs my friend bought (HK$610, HK$600, and HK$280 respectively) just for price comparison... then I went DVD hunting.

Lo and behold... there were many cheaper stores out there in HK. I was able to see Toy Story box-set being sold for only HK$350, Simpsons Season 2 (r2) for only HK$400, and the Memento for about HK$180-190.

Didn't buy a single disc from HMV (but went back again to check out the awesome selection  ;D). My friend would've already saved about HK$550 from those three titles alone... Although my friend still prefers shopping at HMV because it's really more convenient (mayaman kasi e  ;D). But at HK$550?!? I can buy another Box-set with that and even have change (...well, not from HMV anyway  :P)!

the prices of dvds in HMV are significantly higher than the prices being offered by the sellers here in Pinoydvd. the only chance of getting a bargain is if HMV offers a sale. selection wise, HMV is hard to beat, with dvds reg 1 to 4 side by side on the shelves. but you stand to save anywhere from 200 to 500 pesos per dvd if you just buy here or online, even with tax ;)

CD Warehouse is in Harbour City, that big mall complex along the waterfront at Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon side.  It looks small but they have a really good selection of CDs and DVDs and their prices can be much lower than HMV. Also check out Hong Kong Records in Pacific Place, That's at Central, Hong Kong Island.

If your staying at kowloon side, the easiest way to get there is to hop on an 8a bus going to Whampoa Garden at the Star Ferry Bus Station. The bus ends at Whampoa Bus Station.  You go down there and go to the mall where Mcdo and KFC is located. Go to the basement and you will find CD Warehouse.

If you are staying in Hong Kong side, Take a ferry to Hung Hom and look for mall in Whampoa Garden Area where Mcdo and KFC is located.

The above is the easiest and the cheapest way to get to CD Warehouse.  Hope this helps

Go to Mongkok. Take MTR and exit at bank center.  The moment you exit at st level, go straight towards the Mongkok Computer Center.  You will not go there but before reaching the computer bldg on the same side, you will see a steep stairs going down. Bingo! plenty of DVD's there.  At street level, look for signs lang of major home audio brands and yun na yon.

I couldn't find the Mongkok computer center, but was able to find the Michael's Audio store, lots of R1 dvds on the stores there, and cheaper too compared to other places I've been to. Got my Minority Report R1 for 180 dollars.

Was there 2yrs. ago and found HMV as the ultimate heaven...kaya lang ultimate din ang price.... pero non lang ako nakakita ng DVDs in a floor na puro R1 at alphabetically arranged..... 90% sure makikita mo ron ang gusto mo... at pag swerte ka may mga promo... got
highlander 1 THX edition for about 400pesos.
As mentioned by others CD warehouse is a nice place to buy R1 dvd na a lot cheaper than HMV... iyon lang hindi ganon karami stocks and normally new releases ang marami...so if you're looking for new releases...this is a place to go to.... (at that time cash lang purchases-ewan ko ngayon kung pwede na credit card)
Marami ngang shops na R1 sa Mongkok Area... mura din...cheaper than HMV.... some title mahal ng konti sa CD warehouse pero cheaper pa rin than HMV.... mas maraming titles... but didn't buy for 2 reasons...
1)medyo doubtful ako kasi some are also sealing used R1
2)Naubusan ako ng cash..

Actually #2 is the main reason he!he!

If I have lots of money.... HMV is the 1 stop shop for me.....

If one is used to HK there are places to get DVDs na region 1 for even less than HMV.

If one is familiar with the Ladies Night Market Street in Mongkok, one may remember that the building on the side of the street has several high-end audio shops.

The lower-ground floors of at least one of these buildings has several DVD stores that sell DVDs for at least 10HKD less per disc than HMV. I bought some there. No problem.

I used to live there for 4 years. Is this the HMV at Tsim Sha Tsui (close to that mini bus to Whampoa Gardens - which is where I used to rent my flat - and Duty Free) or is it a different one? Ever tried Sham Shui Po? Mongkok is well known for a this one as well (not to mention computers and stuff).

I came from HK last week, I say... HMV is a good place too for DVD shopping (if its region 1)

But I recommend the nearby road which is HAIPHONG, there were like 3 conscutive DVD/VCD Stores that sell original DVDs as low ast $30 HK.. its like 210 pesos lang and take note all original..

If u happen to search for rare region3 ASIAN films just browse at the lowest shelf in this store "WIDESIGHT" ...

Guys believe me.. my shopping in HK are mere DVDs... super sale and super DAMI!! ;D

Haiphong Road is just next to the temple for Muslim or Islamic and Kowloon Park. I think that it should be the easiest way to find this street. There is also a MTR exit.

Normally, I buy DVD in the shops of Mongkok, whether R1 or R3. For HMV, I would only buy on sale items or DVD which cannot be found in other shops as their price is much higher.

There's another great shop on Cameron on the Kowloon side that carries many R1 titles, along with many r3s and vcds. Forgot the name, though.  As with almost anything in Hong Kong though, your best bet would be to look around first for the lowest prices as the same article can have varying prices depending on what store you get it from. Just remember where you saw what, as almost every corner has some sort of vcd/dvd shop. Bought a lot of titles in HMV before I saw them cheaper in other stores all over the territory.

Hoping to have a chance to go back there sometime this year; keeping my fingers crossed  ;D Now if only I'd have the budget..

I came from Dong Guan City last week and they were selling Dual Layer DVDs with hologram stickers for only RMB 15, I really dont know if its original or not (If its not I apologize in advance). But the stores were big & located along the main road. Concert DVDs and other single layer DVDs were at RMB12.

I brought home almost 30 DVDs and checked on my laptop and the contents were 7 to 8 gig (unlike our local pirated at 4.7 gig). When I viewed the contents when I got home, the quality was the SAME as the original ones I have. DTS-ES titles were really 6 channel ones.

THAT was DVD heaven for me.

After China I proceeded to HK and stayed at the Causeway Bay Area. I stayed at a hotel but before I used to stay at a friend's house a block away. Lo and behold, I discovered that the HMV store was just my neighbor in the same block! I have been staying at my friend's house when I go to HK for many years now, but never knew it. Sheesh..

Anyway, the DVDs there are around HK$99 to HK$139 for the new releases. Older ones are at HK$69 to HK$89. Some are on sale for HK$ 20 but most are Chinese and Single layer. Lots of really cool looking collector/limited editions.

Box sets are more expensive, they reach about Php 4k & above. I also saw a lot of R1 boxsets & collector's editions, one of them is LOTR trilogy EE at Around Php6k, hehe, order na lang online, mura pa. I ended up buying only OLD Boy DTS-ES.

Lots of stores in the streets also sell R1 titles, but they are not as cheap. The good titles are Php1400 or more usually.

I noticed some weird price discrepancies at HMV in Hong Kong this weekend. Like Lois & Clark: The Complete First Season, which was available in both R1 and R3 versions. The R1 in digipak (with slightly reflectorized slipcase) was actually about HK$100 cheaper than the R3 in Amaray-type cases (with plain print slipcase). Very odd.

I hope this series comes out locally at a better price.

Dont wori, you wont get lost, as long as you know how to read and speak in english with little sign language d ka maliligaw. Fastest way to travel is thru MTR (i used an octopus card). Even I traveled alone, i experimented going to different places. I always compute (hk$ to peso) kaya kung minsan hirap bumili. Mas mura sa greenhills karamihan ng mga items. Pero ang sarap ng mga chinese foods! Superb! Bring raincoat/jacket and comfortable shoes, malayo lakaran don, and hk people walks and moves very fast. Nakakapagod pero I'm sure youll enjoy. Ok yan MatterEater_Lad sarap naman magexplore sa HK. I also think Panda is far from the usual DVD shopping haunts, pero baka nga naman may malapit sa hotel nyo. I advise you to dedicate at least a day for DVD shopping. Go to HMV as a last resort, but take a look at their dvds on sale, good deal na din yun. But i prefer the street in between Nathan and the Omni hotels (Haiphong?), landmark is the Watsons in Nathan. There are like 3 stores over there, some real good finds particularly for HK and Korean titles, with some anime boxes as well. Enjoy. :)

yes, it is haiphong road.  i was fortunate enough to have stayed in an omni hotel the last time i was there so i walked along this road quite often.  do check the stores there first before hmv and cd warehouse and hk records and other stores in the malls because more often than not, the dvds are cheaper there.  however, if you're looking for LEs or SEs or whatever, there's a bigger chance you'll find them in the more expensive stores.  siyempre mas mabilis maubos dun sa mas mura.

Hello =)

It was a lot of fun.  May mga pinoy doon na mababait pag nawawala ako.  I didn't get to go to Mongkok or Ocean kase nagkawalaan kame (hehehe) but thanks to the thread here, I was able to find HMV!!!!!  Expensive, but there were a lot on sale plus a lot that are not available here in Manila.  Ganda, I spent hours there =)

I got Max Fleisher's Superman, A Dog of Flanders, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (original and turbo), Dune and Degrassi Junior High Season 1.  I would have wanted to buy Undeclared: The Complete Series and V: The Series if I had more money.  And I wanted to save for the Disney sale at Astrovision when I got back (for the Disney sequels... pero walang inserts, weird).

Scary at customs since they asked me to open my bags.  Ba't sa ibang bansa, mas mabait ang airport personnel?  Sigh.

To everyone, thanks for all the tips.  Di ako halos kumain para makabili ng DVDs hehehe.  Food's very expensive there! =)

Food is expensive there if you eat at Chinese restaurants.  I ate at Yoshinoya there and it wasnt that expensive, great menu too, and some of the menus were not available in the Phil. Yoshinoya. I look forward to going back there and trying out the other Yoshinoya foods that arent in the Phils.

I remember the time when everything was so cheap in HK (HK$1 = Php3.00), but they pegged their currency to the dollar during the last currency crisis. So now even a small bottle of water is expensive. At their old exchange rate, pinoydvd members would all flock to HK to buy DVDs  ;D.

I came home with 30 dvds and 2 DVD players last April, buti na lang customs didnt open our bags.

Sir upinsmoke, I bought dvds there which arent available here, all dts and dts-es. Got the Hero dts-es at hk$89 at Wide Sight Entertainment in Mongkok. Costs ranged from hk$79-99. its cheaper here, php250-350 esp at AstroPlus sale. -platinum

I agree, its still cheaper here. But if you are looking for DTS-ES, most of their releases are in DTS-ES. HK version is better.

They also have a HVD version of the 2 films you mentioned. Its clearer (I have seen it) and they claim its at 1080i resolution.

I will go back to HK for vacation early May. Will stay in YMCA. Very near to HMV. But I will still buy DVDs in Mongkok and Haiphong Road first before I shop there. Hope I can still see King Kong LE there.
Not sure anybody has mentioned about Sino Centre. It is the most popular shopping place for young one in Mongkok. It is at Nathan Road, few steps away from Dundas Street.
There are some CD shops selling music DVD (including R1, R2 and R3). Before, it was the paradise for pirated DVDs (including US, HK, Korea and Japan movies, XXX, Korean/Japan TV drama and Japan anime). Now, not anymore.
If you are into Japan music and movie, there is a DVD shop on the second floor (one floor up from ground floor) selling some second hand (or rental) Japan music CD. Also selling some movies DVD (R2 - Japan and UK), though not many choices. But there are normally with a punched hole at the spine of the DVDs, but at a lower price. I am luckily once to find Bayside shakedown 2 R2 (Int'l ed) at around HK$38. Everything is perfect except punched hole. I always go there to try my luck for my HK trip.
OT. If you are into Japan AV idols, there are shops there selling Japan AV or swimsuit idol magazines. It is on the fourth floor.

Widesight - along Haiphong Road ( I think - Nathan Road cor Haiphong Road is the Watsons Store - adjacent to the temple and Kowloon Park. ) From Marco Polo Hotel in Harbour City, go to Nathan Road.  Its on the middle portion after Silvercord Plaza? There is also one in night market Mongkok.

hello, Anybody have experience bringing in dvd players or others? Im thinking of bringing in a PS3 if the price is really low there. Last I heard the 60 gig is at 28 thou vs. 35 to 37 thou here. Im just looking at  the 20 gig if its 15 thou I would probably get it.

Also is customs stricter in Naia one vs Naia 2? I always take PAL and customs there is ok naman (for dvds), no problems so far for me (sweating profusely). However now if ever, im thinking of bringing in elec equip like oppo 981 or Ps3. Im going Naia 1 now. Hmmm parang kasi russian roulette  yun mga customs dito eh..hehe..

Just an update. I was in Hong Kong last week and was surprised that the dvd stores in haiphong road are gone. i always pass by that road going to and from the hotel so it used to be so enjoyable browsing through the dvd shops. the hmv store in peking road is also gone. it is now a big adidas store. it is now along lock road, nearer to haiphong road.

Grr... I should've read this thread before leaving for holiday, so I wouldn't have been shocked to see the Adidas store and maybe could've found the HMV mentioned.

Widesight stores in hongkong are quite hard to find since their stores are quite small only and are located in side streets.  Their pricing is lower compared to HMV.  Browsing the DVDs is easier compared to local stores here in our country since they grouped the titles alphabetically.  Selections for hard to find DVDs are not too many as compared to HMV.  As for HD titles, limited lang yung titles nila.  Bought a Spiderman Bluray Boxset for more than P2500 only.

Yung HMV sa central near Landmark is quite big with big selections of DVDs including hard to find titles.  You will need to spend time in browsing for titles kasi and daming selections arranged also in alphabetical.  Boxed sets and TV series are in a different area with their own shelves kaya you won't have a hard time browsing them also. Bluray and HD formats also available.

Hope this helps.

Just come back from Hong Kong.
In Sino centre in Mongkok, I notice that there are several DVD shops in the basement and one shop of M/F. They are selling Japanese edition DVDs very cheap. Mostly between HK$18 to HK$38. Though not the latest movies. You can easily buy the type of X-men, King Kong, Terminator 2, the days after tomorrow etc. They are brand new, not second-handed, no punched hole.  As I start collecting blu-ray disc, I don't buy much DVD. Just buy the following Japan movies Special edition DVD. In fact, choice of Japan movies are limited.

Ooku Movie (2 Discs Wooden box edition) HK$68
Umizaru: Limit of Love (4 Discs Premium edition) HK$38
Dororo (4 Discs collector's edition) HK$98
Death Note Complete set (3 DVD + 1CD, including Part 1 and 2) HK$20

The last two seem has no English subtitle based on the label. Just buy it for collection is nice for such price.
Kill bill Part 2 box set costs only HK$150, but my travelling bag has no space any more.

Give it a visit when you go to HK. You won't be disappointed. You all know Japan DVDs have high standard. Not like D5 local cheap version. ;D

Went months ago. DVD selections were OK, including box sets of Cosmos and Civilisation, but the Decca classical music box sets were a bargain!
