Its too early to predict but last year gave us TULAD NG DATI, DONSOL, SAAN NAGTATAGO SI HAPPINESS & ROTONDA.
What's in store for us this year? You shouldn't miss the screening at the CCP where the atmosphere is so festive, you bumped into filmmakers and its like going to Cannes, Toronto & Sundance without going overseas! ;)
-
I would have liked to see Michiko Yamamoto direct but too bad she's not shortlisted. I guess its not her year. and yeah, mood IS festive at the CCP. :)
-
One month to go. Today is the deadline for all the films to be screened, but they may still extend it according to Teddy Co.
-
The brilliant Michiko Yamamoto has an entry! Loved her MAGNIFICO and MAXIMO OLIVEROS. Cinemalaya presscon will happen in the next few weeks.
Thank God, Marilou Diaz Abaya is visible again.

Pisay by Aureaus Solito looks interesting.
-
Thanks for posting the sked, joey! FOSTER CHILD is not in competition?
My watch lists:
ENDO- written by Michiko Yamamoto, end of contract of people working in a fast-food chain and the story that revolves after.
PISAY- Aureaus is back at Cinemalaya after the groundbreaking MAXIMO.
GULONG- trailer is so impressive already.
-
Oooo, I didn't realize she wrote it. I crush her ;D
I also want to see Lawrence Fajardo's new short film.
Of the old stuff I want to see Saan Nagtatago si Happiness, Numbalikdiwa, Cavite and any Brillante Mendoza or Ato Bautista film.
Curiously no Sherad yet.
-
Man, she actually looks hot, and she has brains! ;)
2,999 with Tessie Tomas and Marvin Agustin, back out?
Jeez......Sine Taktakan is so cool.
-
I attended the not-so presscon yesterday at the CCP (no one fielded questions) and, if some of the trailers are any indication, the films look interesting. I just hope that they manage to live up.
-
The trailers of PISAY & GULONG are worth seeing already. CINEMALAYA fever rages on!

-
Man, they should pay you for the plugging that you've been doing here. LOL! ;D
-
Gedamnit! Tickets to Pisay for this Sat are sold-out already! :o Hope I can be a chance passenger.
-
Yeah, man. Sana mapuno naman CCP just like the crowd in TRANSFORMERS. LOL!
Rain or shine, chance passenger is our last chance. Will Peque show up for LIGAW LIHAM?
-
STILL LIFE trailer, another good film to catch at the CCP.

Passed by CCP a while ago and had a short chat with Sir Ed Cabagnot, posters are now up at the lobby! PISAY'S half-sheet poster will surely catch your attention. GULONG's poster artwork is so good also.
Firewired, randyv, Sir Ed is inviting both of you on tomorrow's event.
-
sniff, sniff, am I not invited, too? :'( :D
-
I'm guessing you already have the ticket, joey. ;)
BTW, Michiko wrote ENDO with Raymond Lee and Jade Castro. If MMFF will be like this, then, its heaven every Christmas in Manila!

What a great week for Philippine cinema. Cinemalaya and a Topel Lee flick all out in the same week.

Get your tickets early, or better yet secure a day or fest pass to avoid problems.
-
Saw GULONG at the main theatre finally, then Jade Castro's ENDO and Jay Abello's LIGAW LIHAM. Very difficult to pick the Best Pic but my thumbs goes for GULONG and LIGAW LIHAM.
LIGAW LIHAM is the most visually appealing of all the entries.
Direk Jade Castro is a fellow pinoydvd member but he already forgot his username! LOL! ;D
-
The loudest applause so far was from the screening of PISAY and KADIN. One week to go, if you have time catch the screenings at the CCP.

everyone should go and support the festival...
-
Michiko Yamamoto was basking in front of us at the CCP lobby before the screening of ENDO. She's actually pretty in person, humble and nice.
-
These will still be shown at the UP Cinema right? As I am too far from the CCP, I caught some of last year's Cinemalaya screenings at UP & hope to do so again this year.
-
Surely, jas. Most of the films also will be shown in Indie Sine in Robinson's Galleria.

Thanks for the confirmation, sir keating :) Hope they will release the UP screening schedules soon after the CCP showings.

Try to watch all the films, they are all good. I wish I had an entry. LOL! ;)

Kadin (The Goat, Adolfo Alix Jr., 2007) (http://oggsmoggs.blogspot.com/2007/07/kadin-2007.html)

only had time to see KADIN, TRIBU and the 2007 Shorts. It was fun. a lot of students, were rowdy though.
-
For Best Cinematography category, it will be a neck-to-neck fight between KADIN, GULONG & LIGAW LIHAM. See you at the awards night this coming Sunday.
-
"Gulong"- simply one of the best indie films at cinemalaya! 8) congrats direct Sockie Fernandez!
-
Already saw the UP screening schedules from July 31 to August 4 as posted by arbitrary in the PISAY thread. :) However it seems that each film will only get 1 screening each. :-\ Hope I will be able to catch all of them...

Its a feel-good movie, if I have a chance this Saturday, I will see it again for the 3rd time. I hope it bags the Best Pic, but many entries this year are all good.

(Jason Abalos and Ina Feleo struggle for survival as ENDO workers. Photo taken from Raya Martin's blog.)
Impossible to ignore. Jade Castro's digital film debut boasts of impressive performances from his entire cast most notably Jason Abalos & Ina Feleo as Leo and Tanya. Coined as a term for end of contract, (ENDO) focus on the problems plaguing our labor laws centered on a breadwinner single man named Leo and his relationships with his family and how he cope up also with relationships to other women. His match was equalled when she meets Tanya played superbly by Ina Feleo. With no pretensions, straight focus story, it also deals with some social commentaries thrown in like the labor law problems, premarital sex and relationships with family and friends. Michiko Yamamoto carved again an amazing script to her credit aside from MAGNIFICO, ANG PAGDADALAGA NI MAXIMO OLIVEROS, although she she co-wrote it with Raymond Lee and Jade Castro. Abalos has metamorphosed into one of the finest actors of his generation expressing such deep and great range lacking in countless actors plaguing the industry. His breakdown scene is enough to generate attention. Truthful and honest, ENDO crosses again the boundaries of what greatness is all about with simple characters and less expensive scope.

Its my first time to attend an awards night and Cinemalaya didn't disappoint me. Its fast-paced and less than two hours, the ceremony is finished.
Best Digital Film- TRIBU
Special Jury Prize- ENDO
Best Actress- Ina Feleo for ENDO
Best Actor- ensemble cast of TRIBU
The most honest-to-goodness speech came from one of the actors of TRIBU- "nagpunta lang ho kami dito para makikain!" ;D
Direk Jim Libiran congrats! You were so quiet about your film but I remember your post a few months back that its nice to make an indie film. Your film was one of the most under rated among the entries. Some of my bets also didn't win, not even GULONG & LIGAW LIHAM bagged any award.
Thanks to RMN, jaycat and oggsmoggs for keeping me company last week for my 3-day troop to the CCP.
Long live CINEMALAYA!

Long live CINEMALAYA!
There are rumors that Cinemalaya is dying; especially since Tony Cojuangco is running out of funds...
-
Hey oggs you missed the awards night. Jim and Jade Castro were looking for you. ;)

I was supposed to go but I got lazy at the last minute... and it was raining.
-
The atmosphere was more festive and the food was much better than the opening night.

Oh well, sayang. I did enjoy Cinemalaya a lot. Although I thought the exhibition films (Huling Balyan ng Buhi, Squatterpunk, Heremias, etc.) were stronger than the ones in competition (except for Endo), seeing CCP crowded with people who are gambling with these new directors and their new films is a good sign for Philippine cinema.
-
If they will continue with this kind of vision, its good really for Phil. cinema. Jim Libiran explained that TRIBU will have a rough sailing with the censors. I thought the kids from GULONG will bag the Best Actor award, even Jason Abalos was my bet for ENDO.

I hope Jim's film survives the censors. If it doesn't, it only shows how inutile our censors are; I believe its win will help it a lot sail through MTRCB's evil paws (but Tuli's Cinemanila win didn't do much, so we really don't know).
Sorry, I didn't like Gulong. It's meager in ambition, and meager in rewards. It's the type of film that goes against the direction independent cinema should be taking. It's essentially a commercial feature, done in digital video. It's very likeable, but that's it. Sockie's a very nice woman though, and Flames is an interesting short.
-
I saw all the shorts in competition and I'm glad Alvin Yapan's Rolyo won.
It's very crudely done. You immediately know that Yapan is not a filmmaker by profession (Yapan won a Palanca for sci-fi short in Tagalog), but the tone and execution of the film are commensurate to the idyllic locale and the beautiful pay-off (the kid following the plot of a movie through the film from the torotot she bought). It's that cycle of the film in the farmers' lives that makes the film transcend its crudeness.
The other shorts range from okay to bad.
-

CinoMalaya? (http://oggsmoggs.blogspot.com/2007/08/cinomalaya-discussion.html)
-
Hey oggs, just finished reading your piece and the comments on your blog. I don't write as good as you, keep up the good work.
Congrats dude, I only learned a while ago from Jojo that your review for BLACKOUT was chosen for the film program of San Francisco International Film Festival!
Forget the bar, man. You have a career in film criticisms. :D
-
Pfft. There's no money in film criticism. Make millions, then spend your time in idle moviewatching...
-
Thanks keating,
...and yeah, as Noel mentioned, I don't think I have a career in film criticism. I admit I'm too selfish and materialistic a person to dedicate myself to writing about films. There's more to life than moviewatching; but yeah, I have lots of idle time for idle moviewatching. It'll remain a hobby until I've made my millions.
-
Not selfish and materialistic--just realistic. You have to be nuts to go into this field.
Welcome, fellow nut!
-
Yeah. It's a thankless, crazy thing to want to do - - -writing about films. Least with music reviews, I got free CDs. Mostly free crap CDs but hey. :)
But the making millions then indulging in idle moviewatching sounds like a plan. I'm sort of doing that now . . .but without the millions. The glories of temporary bumhood. ;D
-
Then you get people like rich--"how dare you step on these poor struggling filmmakers!" Jesus, as if film critics don't struggle.
-
Rather be steeped on than passed over (i.e.ignored) myself.
-
Pfft. There's no money in film criticism. Make millions, then spend your time in idle moviewatching...
What..... just labor of love, Noel? But you get some perks, right?
-
no chance of the films screened here being shown at the intl cinemalaya festival in gateway? gateway is a bit more accessible to me :)
-
TRIBU is schedule to be shown at Cinemanila this week, tonedeaf. I think they will be adding more indies and Filipino films including Gosiengfiao's TEMPTATION ISLAND.
