Thanks bored. Hopefully, the lenticular covers will scout the 2-discs release of the titles. Otherwise, buying the new releases would be a downgrade purchase.

Post by: boredfilmmaker on Apr 08, 2007 at 07:51 PM
As far as I know, June 5 is the release date for the lenticular ones.. They are up for pre-oder at amazon.. Just search for the title and choose the one that's available for pre-order.. the covers aren't posted though.. And also, these releases are the 2-disc editions just repackaged, as far as I know.. It's the same as the R2 Definitive Editions released recently by Fox and MGM in the UK..
Title: Re: Steelbook...
Post by: hemisphere on Apr 08, 2007 at 07:58 PM
I never bought any of the ROBOCOP releases. Is the old release a flipper? Same with old Terminator release?

Steelbook catching on in the US?  Dati, panay Best buy exclusive mostly ang Steelbook.  Sa R2 UK, maraming nang Steelbook like the aforementioned Definitive Editions from Fox...

So instead of remastering the movie or adding any new features, they are just repackaging it now...

More than aesthetics and re-releases, one of the main objectives of steelbook is to combat piracy. This move addresses request of DVD fanatics to offer a more unique packaging than what is already available in the market.

Steelbook is a good investment. It won't rust through time. It has high quality printing. And it is a solid proof that your dvd is authentic.

Yeah it does but it time it will be coved in dust just like our collections. :( We were buying and collecting DVD's with different regions, packaging, etc but not to watch it.  Just displaying it at our shelves.  But hey I enjoyed it anyway.  But when you watch some movies in spectacular packaging that is not good or not even worth watching.  You said to yourself "Sana hindi ko nalang pinanuod".    ;D

Ayaw kong magsalita ng tapos.  Maybe the bug will bite me again and drive me insane and make me get all the steelbooks and lenticular release.  I hope there is a HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray release in steelbook or in lenticular cover.  I'll get it for sure. :)

Why are you all of a sudden showing your grumpy side, baby?  ;) It's a phase in every collector's life.

You should write a blog about it. And find answers perhaps... Is it buying/collecting or watching that satisfies you?

OT.

I don't know.  I think busy perhaps. :)  Haven't made any purchases for a while and I'm onto something now. (http://tsikot.yehey.com/forums/images/smilies/naughty2.gif)
And I'm still torn between DB & HD-DVD.  A steelbook in HD would be nice.  And I'm very sure that it will be out soon.

Also noticed that.  Apocalypto will also be released with a steelbook edition accdg to dvd-palace.de.  Also Kingdom of Heaven.

Seems like DVD business has found a new attraction for their avid collectors to double-dip.   ;D  And more reason to up the price tags since you now have the makings a new product life cycle starting.  Even if it's just packaging.

I've stumbled on the origins of the SteelBook - a trademarked name for a Danish packaging firm Glud & Marstrand and marketed by Scanavo.  No wonder those .de websites on DVD have the most titles on steelbook.  Must be cheaper to get them from Denmark or Germany.   ;D

http://www.glud-marstrand.com/sw1239.asp

These steelbooks will now have a 1-1 relationship with the disc content.  Much like in the days of those warner snappers since the disc details will be printed on the cases themsevles, no more printed cover inserts.   You can no longer replace ruined cases as easily as with Amarays.  I remember this was one of the reasons warner shifted to a more flexible and cheaper amaray casing.  Definitely a lot classier than snappers, but I think printing on tin may be more expensive than printing on snapper cardboards with die-cutting.  And now, you have more reason not to lend a DVD title cased in steebook.   ;D

Yup, they all are tempting to get.  I won't be surprised if by this time next year, maybe even by Christmas, every DVDs, new and catalogue,  will be in steelbook.  I believe the new packaging will really give a new product life cycle to the DVD in the face of the emerging high definition formats.

Any DVD collector going to Europe or ordering online had better budget at least 5000 Euros to start collecting them and replacing their staid amaray and digipack collections.  ;D

Is steelbook considered the same as those released by Ezydvd? They have quite a number of attractive ones too

Title: Re: Steelbook...
Post by: av_phile1 on Apr 15, 2007 at 10:01 AM
They don't look the same to me, they're more like those tin cases from Band Of Brothers - larger than those steelbooks, though both are made of tin.  And I believe the design and term "steelbook" is patented.

AvPhile is correct regarding ezydvd. The embossed tin looks good though. I own one of ezydvd exclusive... King Kong.

Title: Re: Steelbook...

There's nothing to maintain with steelbooks, is there?  Once it is soiled, defaced or dented, that's it, goodbye.   No replacement.  Unlike neutral nameless Amaray cases which rightly belong in the maintenance section.
Title: Re: Steelbook Packaging For DVDs

I wasn't the moderator who moved the topic, but if you look at the subforum description, it says:

DVD Maintenance:
Disc care, defects, bug reports, storage, cases & packaging.

So although I moved the thread back to General DVD Discussion for 1 minute, I bounced it back in here, since that's what this section is for, apparently.

I've actually never read a single thread in "DVD Maintenance" until today.  ;D
Title: Re: Steelbook Packaging For DVDs
Post by: av_phile1 on Apr 18, 2007 at 08:36 PM
I guess the title of the thread is also misleading. Based on the discussions so far, the thread has become a listing of what DVD titles are available in steelbook and what titles you have in steelbook,  rather than a discussion about steelbook,  Very much unlike a thread discussing where to get amaray cases or the merits of snapper vs amaray vs digipack. Perhaps a change of thread title into: "DVD titles in steelbook" may be more apt in the DVD releases section, separate from another thread about steelbook packaging.
