the audio section of the sonic frontiers SFL2 tubed preamplifier. removed top cover for better ventilation...

already replaced my studio 20s with vienna acoustics haydn / sonus faber concertino
already replaced my azur540c with ah! njoe tjoeb digital source
already replaced my B&K PT3 preamplifier with sonic frontiers SFL2 preamp.
already upgraded my speakers wires to MIT terminator 5
my main stays are: project debut 3 piano black finish with ortofon om5E cart and project mk2 phonobox, B&K EX4420 monoblock power amplifiers, audioquest ICs, LPs(lionel richie,linda ronstadt,julio iglesias,styx,eagles,england dan/foley)

ganda ... lalo na yung Linda Ronstadt LP (Simple Dreams) sa tabi ng left speaker. I suggest you optimize speaker placement using the Cardas Rule (you can view it at WS Speaker Section). Very big improvement you'll get I can say since halos parang pareho tayo ng room dimensions.

yes, the B&K is one of the few tube-sounding SS amps around. very dependable quality, built like a tank.
so many rules for speaker placement...but will try them anyway. thanks for the info devo.

of course it is (i used to do that myself)....but things change and for now, it delights me to see only a 2-ch audio set up in my listening room. pass muna ako sa HT, ive been there 7 years back and has given it up already about a year ago :)

imagine like parang umaatend ka sa isang concert hall na live na live ang sound..
feels different tlaga, mas lalo kpag di pa ganun gears mo, kita mo ang pagkakaiba ng tunog swabe sa tunog pasado...

tnx Ryan, its my passion for audio that led me to build a mediocre system that i can afford. ayoko na ng buy and sell bro..sawa na ako. this one stays with me for good na.

sa sunod na punta mo dala ka memory stick para bigay kita copies ng mga nakakakilabot na music..hehehe
sa huwebes pre puwede ako..sama mo dad mo for a memory lane down the vinyl days.

pre, just hooked up the "transparent" XLR cable last night and finished a couple of songs. pati ako tumayo balahibo ko kahit madalas ko na nadidinig ang songs. parang may multo ni susan wong sa kuwarto na nanghaharana...

tnx to brod jimmy for telling me about "monolith" pumunta pa ng shang si steve para lang magawa ang cable for me.
until now contemplating pa din ako about a power conditioner gat di ko nadidinig ang improvement in my own rig. jim, pahiram naman ng BADA mo kahit maghapon lang. simulate ko lang ang effect kung talagang gaganda pa tunog.

interconnect from the preamp to the amps bro.since both has provisions for XLR wires, i decided na gumamit ng XLR instead of the usual RCA. pagkakabit ko pa lang i notice about 3-5dB increase sa volume level and much much cleaner ang background. knowing that this is only a cheap XLR, i decided to visit monolith and request for the "transparent" XLR cable. pagkakabit ko kagabi parang minumulto na ako ni susan wong..hehehe

sige, kung kelan na lang puwede ang BADA. si brod ryan happy sa ecosse 2.3 na dating gamit ko sa digms. ngapala, yung digms nadale na last week ni Eugene(glacierfrost).

im now looking into the possiblity of using hybrid IC (RCA to XLR) to connect my cdp and preamp kaya lang di akko sure if it will have the same benefit as a true balanced connection (XLR to XLR). wl kasing XLR out ang cdp ko eh :(

Santa Rosa for the win!! :)


I'm relatively new to this hobby.  The few gears I can play with so far are a pair of Wharf diamond 9.4s and 9cs powered by a Yammy 440 for HT; BW 602s3 + Pioneer A-717 for audio.  I'm open to a variety of music from contemporary to mainstream pop, rock, a bit of classical, Jpop, & Kpop.  My latest CD purchase is the best audiophile voices III & I absolutely love it!

sayang nga yun bro. ayus ka lang ba jan..nabenta ko na old speaker cables ko kay ryan, yung daving AVR na gamit ko nabenta ko na din...now using xindak FS1000...di na kita nahintay bro, kating kati na ako sa power conditioner eh.

pero yung power amps ko naka direct socket sa wall outlets.

u mean hybrid SACD cguro pre kc kung sacd yan it wont play sa ordinary players but only to SACD players. di papatalo ang pinas sa indonesia pre...punta ka sa watt hi fi sa mcs, bumabaha din ng CD don...pinakamalupit sa hong kong, 1 building, 5 floors walang ibang laman kundi CD!

eh di solb solb ka nanaman jan sa sax, strings at drums ng "jazz at d pawnshop"? dala ka external hard drive or thumb drive pag nakabalik ka sa bahay para migrate ko lahat ng CD sofware copy ko sa yo.

hehe..just a small analog path upgrade ryan...tomorrow ill be picking up the replacement/upgraded phono stage for audition. nabenta ko na kahapon ang pro-ject phonostage ko e.

when im also done installing the cart, session ulit tayo.

mejo alanganin din ako magkabit kc 1st time ko magpapalit ng cart, baka mabakli ko ang stylus, yari.

hi doc, i would like to give the vienna acoustics haydn signature as the answer to your question. however, there are a lot of times that i want to hear the monitor audio gold signature10 type of character and at times, also the sonus faber concertino's flawless midrange...it is the reason y im keeping all 3 of them. by the way, i am letting go of my sonus faber concertino for a very good price...its replacement ive already hooked up just last night...a white thing that looks more like an abflector than a loudspeaker :)....the most recent pic ill post maybe on sunday.

Hi Sir Allan, musta na dami mo talaga nice speakers.

I'd already auditioned the Vienna Acoustics Grand Haydn here in Seoul kaya lang di ako nag enjoy kasi dinala agad ako nung sales rep sa room ng MBL (Speaker ni Bill Gates daw). Lintek yung MBL parang nuclear reactor pero pag tumunog grabe.

Pero ang galing ng Vienna saka yung tweets nya naka mount sa bass port! Selling price is 975US$.

thanks bassman...mine is the VA haynd signature  model btw, local msrp is about 2x youve mentioned...had its tweeters different from the standard haydn models.
oh yes, the MBL is @#$$#^ good....it should be kc kung hindi walang bibili niyan at that price..hehehe.

quasi-ribbon bro..sounds very different from any other boxed speakers...
i believe the viennas differ in tweeters lang...kaya lang the color itself(rosewood) is a mark up of around 200usd yata.
sorry bro, the sonus already sold the other day. try mo yung Monitor audio, for me it sounds better than the sonus...again, its just for me.

sir Devo, i believe there is no local dealer for the AT440MLa. it was bought from the US...very cheap lang (around 90usd) but its a step above the stock ortofon of my debut 3 TT. the ortofon sounds more tonally neutal with better bass slam. the AT440MLa has more detail, air and openess. give it a few hours of break in period and it will get better tonal balance....initially it may sound a tad bright kc.

its busog3x bro..hehe. mids and highs are fantastic. the lows are enough kaya lang mjo mabagal kaya di siya for fast dance and/or rock music....excellent for slow disco music naman (pang showtime!)

yup, the Tinos are gone....namimiss ko na nga actually though im happy to realize that its making somebody else very very proud and happy at the moment.

the MAs... . to me they are a bit better than the Tinos in the highs and lows department...its just really hard to beat the mids of the Tinos....the haydn sigs can :), with flying colors.

another big brother to come very soon :)

.....at least for me, they are the best BS speakers i could afford :)....u wont be sorry owning them. enjoy them for a loooooooong time.

ive used rotel separates about 2 yrs ago kaya lang di na nagpang abot with the VAs. anyway, im now using transparent and audioquest ICs. the speaker wires are ecosse2.3c. im keeping my VA haydns for good pre. its a very good substitute for the ribbon speakers that i would be using on the main system. the sound of the mg12 and the VA haydns doesnt seem to be far in terms of my personal sonic liking. my MA gold signature10 is still for sale and i hope to have the bigger full ribbons within the month. if youll have upgrade plans, try driving the VAs with unison research Unico integrated amp....for a bigger budget, try it with BnK or BAT or primaluna....by then youll enjoy what they are really capable of...my 2 thumbs up to VA haydns!!!

at last weve met. speechless ako sa ingenuity ng creations mo. it was another show stealer..as usual. congrats!
i did not pursue caps replacement of the phonostage...mas malamang palitan ko na lang ng buo kaya lang wl ako makitang "________" in the used market these days.
going MC is good...just another route to explore for a great mind like yours.

btw, im curious how the fostex would sound if properly positioned..too bad nasa kusina kasi ang demo at the show e..hehe

the literature is true bro....it is not a subtle tweak.

highs - smoother, higher highs
mids - more open
lows - tighter, extended
clarity/resolution - nuances are brought more into the foreground. youll hear new things from the music.
air - expanded soundstage

ive replaced already 5 fuses(all input power supplies for cdp, linestage, power amps)....i need 8 more, and itll arrive by next month(for the monoblock amplification board stages).

these fuses came to get mind upon noticing the improvements due to power cables by the way.

no prob...if youve heard improvements from cords, wires, interconnects....you are in for a revelation with these fuse upgrades. they dont cost 35usd each for nothing :)

anyway, consumer level jbls are usually retailed through A/V shops you can find at SM cyberzone in north edsa, megamall. i forgot the store name though...

higher end models can be found and auditioned through architectural audio in greenbelt.
