Title: Best DVD PQ
Post by: barrister on Nov 27, 2007 at 06:18 PM
We have threads for best DVDs for LFE and best DVDs for surrounds, but I haven't seen a thread for best DVDs for picture quality.

I vote for Ratatouille -- I was so amazed that I decided to start this thread.

My Top Picks for DVDs with outstanding PQ ( In Order )

2)  COLLATERAL -- shot in digital camera, the night scenes are awesome!
3)  MONSTERS INC -- makes you want to touch and feel the characters
4)  CASABLANCA 2 disc -- outstanding B&W in fullscreen!  was this over 40 year old movie shot yesterday?
5)  SINGING IN THE RAIN 2 disc -- how they remastered this classic film continues to amaze me

One disc im really fascinated by for its only 299 is Flight of the Phoenix, it looked pretty sharp to me. I don't know maybe Im just sleepy that night ;D

setting the animations aside.....since it is expected to have a good PQ ::)

It's a common misconception that animation is not good demo material because animated features are expected to have sharp, colorful pictures.

On the contrary, animated features are in fact very good test materials because they have a tendency to show not only the best capabilities but also the worst flaws of players, display devices and compression methods.

Animation traditionally has highly saturated colors.  Ironically, it is precisely the high saturation in animation that causes its video flaws to be more obvious.

For example, Pixar's Cars has very good picture quality, but there's still a compression flaw ---- look for posterization.  It's hard to find, but it's there.

Also, Chroma Upsampling Error, also known as "Chroma Bug" or "CUE", is easier to detect in animated features.

Hamlet (1996, Kenneth Branagh)

PQ on Hamlet is reference quality.  Skin tones, color acccuracy and details are gorgeous.  No posterization whatsoever.

To date, it's the last full length feature ever shot entirely on 65mm film.

65 mm film (or 70 mm film) is a wide, high-resolution film gauge, with quality superior to standard 35 mm film.

no one has posted here for quite sometime na.
Anyway due to the recent Astro sale I got a number of DVD that have really good PQ

- Jungle Book Platinum Edition - wonderful PQ, it looks as new as Lion King to me
- Finian's Rainbow - 1968 movie from Francis Coppolla. Colors pop and are wonderfully vibrant
- Collateral - stunning cinematography

Vertical Limit- even on a non-superbit versions clarity is astounding

"House of Flying Daggers" has an awesome soundtrack but its pq has often been criticized. If you look at the "Echo Dance" scene, you will notice that the whites are overblown and the details are crushed. Have you noticed this as well?

I love this movie so much that when I was in HK, I bought the HK version (double-dip), hoping that the pq was better. It seems better but only marginally. I hope they produce a good BD version with an improved pq (triple-dip!).

Can you see any difference in terms of PQ between Region 1 and Region 3 DVDs..?

Thanks,

In most cases the R3 & R1 transfers come from the same master.

except for the cheap DVD5's from Viva
and some of the budget Magna releases

If they came from the same transfer, then PQ is almost identical.  Where lies the difference is the SQ of R1s where mostly have DTS options.  Also the packaging of R1s has more quality vs R3s.

Dvd quality nowadays have improved since the introduction of bluray. I think the dvds now are bluray ripped so the Pq is excellent plus the AQ is dts certified.
Title: Re: Best DVD PQ
Post by: barrister on May 11, 2008 at 02:02 PM
Dvd quality nowadays have improved since the introduction of bluray.

DVD releases improved even before the official introduction of Blu-ray.  But it's true that Blu-ray had something to do with it.  They started minting high definition masters in anticipation of the introduction of HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Rumor has it that The Godfather Trilogy has been remastered in high def  ---  not just 1080p, but in 4K (4096 x 2048 resolution).  If this is true, then the studios are probably getting ready for the 4k home video format.  (See my Red-Ray post: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=70470.msg800025#msg800025 )

I think the dvds now are bluray ripped so the Pq is excellent plus the AQ is dts certified.

The standard DVD was authored directly from the high-definition master, not ripped from the Blu-ray disc.

Today, a master for home video is usually made in high definition.  From that hi def master, they encode both a standard DVD version and Blu-ray version.

Take Con Air for example.  The old DVD version was very good at the time it was released.  But today, it's a blurry, non-anamorphic antique.

They made a new anamorphic master in hi def, then released a new standard DVD version.  From the same high def master, they released a Blu-ray version:

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516GKCDV98L._SL160_AA115_.jpg)    (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JrHyS%2BUtL._SL160_AA115_.jpg)

It's unlikely that the new standard DVD version was ripped from Blu-ray for the following reasons:

(a) The Con Air Blu-ray version was released on January 8, 2008; the latest standard DVD version was released much earlier, on May 6 2006;

(b) The first Blu-ray discs, encoded in MPEG-2, were released on June 20, 2006; the first AVC and VC-1 encodes were released in September 2006.  Con Air Blu-ray is encoded in AVC, so it's unlikely that Buena Vista already had the AVC encode at the time the latest DVD version was released in May 2006.

(c) The latest Con Air standard DVD is an unrated extended cut (122 mins.); the Blu-ray version is a theatrical cut (115 mins.)

The DVDs ripped from Blu-ray are the fakes.  Since they were encoded by pirates, encoding errors are common ---  average bitrates are usually 9+ to 11+ Mbps, way higher than the DVD spec of 6 to 8 max. ave., and 9.8 max. peak.  Excessively high bitrates cause judders, skips and pauses on many players.

The orig is still the best.  ;)

I guess a good example of pq improvement is the new collection of James Bond films (21 of them). Each frame was individually scanned and digitally restored. The pq, even of the 1960's films, is very good. Parang photo shop restoration, except that it is done for each and every frame. If you have 24 frames per second, there are 172,800 frames in 2 hours of film time. Each of these frames is digitally restored. Scratches are individually removed. Pretty incredible.

The only main attraction of this movie is the Echo Dance of Zhang Zhi Yi. Asian movies in bluray are only as par as the DVD release much cleaner lng but not overwhelming so to speak, not worth upgrading to bluray just keep ur Dvd copy of this film.

The Disney animation flicks are just out of this world in terms of PQ clarity.  They do have an advantage given that they can control almost all conditions vs. a usual on cam location setting for the regular movies.  Galing, great collection.  :)

Are you referring to Queen Rock Montreal?

It has the best PQ of any Queen concert since it's the only Queen video shot on 35mm film (rather than magnetic videotape), now remastered frame by frame.

The bad part about Queen Rock Montreal is the lousy camerawork.  For example, Brian May delivers a guitar riff, but the camera is on the drummer.  Freddie Mercury pounds the keyboards, but the camera, instead of framing both Freddie and the keyboard, only frames a tight close-up of Freddie's face.  :P

The director of photography does not know what he's doing.  I'm almost certain that he can't play any musical instrument  >:(.

One of the more impressive PQ i've seen is CARNIVALE Seasons 1 & 2.  Truly leaps out of my screen despite many dark scenes.

For Sound Quality, I would have to say (with my recent viewings) SMOKIN ACES.  Check out the scene when the lady sniper took out FBI agents using a high powered gun.  Awesome!!

Also try looking at Rome, the complete first and second seasons. The regal reds just pop out of the screen  :o

Yes, I will agree with Titanic. Close to HD quality siya.
I have the R3 version, I'm sure it has the same master as your R1 copy.  ;)

Agree with the Underworld movies... sama mo na din yung prequel...

Alien vs Predator has awesome PQ... ang galing ng black levels nung dark scenes. Same goes with the Alien disc on the Alien Quadrilogy set... parang hindi luma yung movie.

I just watched the remastered Casino (Anniversary Edition, R1).

Great picture!  Nice color saturation, natural sharpness and grain, no posterization.
