Title: POLL: Are You Upgrading From DVD to Blu-ray? (Please Vote!)
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Dec 22, 2007 at 10:22 PM
I'm conducting a quick survey that the local distributors can take note of, so in case the numbers are right, companies other than Sony might want to consider selling Blu-ray/HD DVD titles locally. It seems odd that we still have to mostly rely on parallel importers/Amazon for our HD disc needs.

Please vote.

Thanks!

lot of reasons why im not upgrading in the near future just yet, finances for one, but until a clear winner emerges from this blu-ray/hd-dvd format war.  im not joining the hd-def crowd just yet. :D

Currently stucked with SD.  Planning to upgrade to Blu-ray with a PS3 purchase in 2008 (I said the same last year, though it was not fulfilled).  One of the reason I had not upgraded yet, is that unless I move up to a bigger and higher-res TV, the difference in PQ would be minimal (My current TV is a 1080i 32" Samsung).

One thing that might force me to upgrade immediately is if Disney start releasing their classic limited-time only line in Blu-ray, I expect that this coming year with Sleeping Beauty (@Oct 2008) or Snow White (2009).  Until then, Standard Definition will suffice.

No HD-DVD in the cards for me, but if Xbox 360 with HD-DVD's price drops low enough, you can never tell...

I plan to stick with Standard DVD.

HD DVD and Blu-ray will go the way of DVD-Audio and SACD.  The market is not interested in high res audio.  In fact, instead of higher quality music, the market went in the opposite direction --- MP3  ;).

The same is true for high res video.  The HD DVD and Blu-ray market will remain a niche market.

Dipping your foot in the hi-def market mean more expenses---total upgrade of your system, not to mention buying hi-def software. If you experience hi-def, you wouldn't settle for SD anymore. Nakatikim lang ng masarap....hinahanap hanap na. ;D

I might just eat what I am saying now..... :-\

I actually believe this, as well. I think HD/BR is to DVD as Laser Disc was to VHS.

If you experience hi-def, you wouldn't settle for SD anymore.

Unfortunately, that's also very true. I was extremely happy with my SD DVD of Transformers. Then as an experiment, I played it simultaneously with my HD DVD of the same title, toggling between the two outputs. The difference was startling.

It's a good thing my SD DVD version is in a transforming case, or else it would have absolutely no function in my collection anymore.

Will the Blu and Purple have their own LE's,giftset's and boxsets soon? If they will, I'm sure that it will not be affordable to many given the price of both formats today.

I plan to stick with my SD's in the coming years, unless the prices of both format and its players will be at par with the standard SD's and players at present.  ;D

I wonder how many years will that be.  ::)

I have gone to fellow member's HT setups comparing SD & HD sound & video.

There is an improvement in video and audio... definitely. But is it commensurate/worth it to spend that much to upgrade your entire setup & DVD collection? Even as an AV enthusiast, my subjective personal answer is no... at least not yet.

I read that the difference of 1080p can only be noticed on a 65" above screen.

Plus with what I experienced with the new surround formats, I agree with what was said in other forums that you really have to own a good well-powered setup to hear the difference. Thats why I agree if the receiver companies only release their HD sound capable recevers for the higher models only.

My recommendation is if you can really afford it, why not? but if you cant, dont push it.  :)

Niche market for now, yes.   But will it remain that way?   IMO, I dont think so.   Consumers may not be interested in high res audio, but I think are very much into high res video.    Consumers adopted DVD, then Upconverting DVD players, then HDTVs.   It is just a matter of time before they will find a HD source to match their HDTV sets.

A recent report supports the trend.

Amazon Reports Strong Holiday Sales For HD DVD, Blu-ray Players

Singling out strong sales for next-gen disc players, Amazon.com says the 2007 holiday shopping season was its best yet.

According to a company press release, Amazon customers ordered more than 5.4 million items during the retailer's busiest day (December 10th) -- that's more than 62 items per second.

The company went on to say that it had sold enough high-disc players during November and December to cover seven football fields.

The residual effects of such strong next-gen hardware sales appeared to be in full force late Wednesday, as HD DVD and Blu-ray discs dominated Amazon's real-time list of top-selling DVDs (fueled, no doubt, by a pair of post-Christmas sales for both formats -- see related stories below).

"We are very grateful to our customers," said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. "On behalf of Amazon.com employees around the globe, we wish everyone happy holidays and best wishes for 2008."

Current DVD top-selling list (at the time of posting) includes 4 Harry Potter Movies in HD DVD occupying the top four slots (courtesy of BOGO promo).   I think hollywood studios and CE companies are doing more than enough for HD media not to go the way of DVD-audio or SACD.

If the prices of software [SD/HD] are almost the same [a few dollars difference maybe] I'll take HD . Offers from Amazon's BOGO is quite tempting to jump in.

I still buy DVDs that I like, but also starting to buy some HD movies that I really want in HD format already.

Matzer is right.  if you have the bucks, then go for it.  Me, I don't want to push it.  pricing of HD gears and HD movies are quite expensive.  That's why I envy those members whose setup is already geared for full HD and HD audio!  Panalo!  ;D

For us PinoyDVD members, SARS is a continous process. We want to achieve the best that our budget could afford.  Eventually, the trend will lead us all to the HD world.  If it will take years, then lets wait.  :D

Thanks for pointing that out.  HD DVD titles beating SD-DVD!  Amazing piece of info.  Even if the BOGO promo was mainly responsible, it's still a phenomenal feat.

I'm pretty satisfied with my DVD collection.

However, I do have an HD-DVD HD-A2 player.

I have decided that I will only get Big special effects movies on High-Def.
(ex. 300, Transformers, Superman etc.)

I mean, Is there any difference between SD Casablanca to HD Casablanca?
old black & white movies look great on SD to me.

Just a thought  ;)

I definitely want to see The Godfather Trilogy released in HD,
because the SD version is super grainy.

who would'nt want too!?

i would love to cross over the hd/br world! however, the prices are still too stiff for both disc and console ! and i guess would need to upgrade everything to full hd to satisfy oneself.

i guess another reason i would stay, would be packaging! im a sucker for nicely packaged dvds (steel books, box sets and gift sets) !

pwde side by side collection ;D

but i also know that SARS will eat you up slowly and surely! lalo na dito sa PDVD nakakahawa, wala pang 1 year mag uupgrade ka na (kaagad) ! pero kahit naman sabihin mo na wala kang pera pag nag compute ka you would'nt believe that one could spend that much, in one year, in this hobby  ;D given that you already have the lcd, all you need to jumpstart is the console, then i bet sunod sunod na (unconsciously) ang gastos!

( palagay ko nga pag nag sale ang theater works ng hd-dvd player or br people may start upgrading or even start-off with hd already...parang yung ginawa nila sa upscaling dvd player and lcd tv...SARS! )

so for me, i will, when able and ready or should i say at the right time  ;D

It's not so much of the player or the disc costs. With the on going intense competition due to the format war, nowdays the players prices are plummenting rapidly thus making them affordable (similar to some of the Nokia cellphone prices). As for disc, with the constant promo esp the popular "buy 1 free 1" nice deal even out the odd. :)

Probably the main hindrance factors are the HDTV and AVR/speakers. These gears will require big investment. But for many the new AVR or the HD audio is not a priority (most folks are still happy using their existing AVR). But once you have passed tru the HD display stage i.e. you own a HD LCD or Plasma....then getting your feet wet into the HD world is much easier na. :D

I doubt Blueray/HDDVD will just be a niche market.  Unlike laser discs, blueray/HDDVD are heading (and already have) to living rooms (Xbox360, Playstation 3) and home computers.  Unlike laser discs, the prices of these new generation titles are comparable to new release DVD titles.  In fact, if you buy a Playstation 3 in the US you get 10 blueray titles free.

Once the dust settles and one winner emerge, expect a huge leap forward in the industry.  It reminds me of the DIVX vs. DVD wars.  DIVX was gaining momentum by getting exclusive titles.  It stalled the growth of DVD for a little while.  When DIVX lost, the DVD industry immediately made its giant leap forward.

The only reason why Hi Def disc prices fell so fast was because there were 2 competing formats.

The whole point in introducing a new format was to revive sagging profits from home video sales.  SD DVD profits became so slim that the studios needed a new format to milk.

HD DVD knew that Blu ray production costs were high, so the former figured that the latter would not be able to survive a price war.  However, a price war would mean defeating the very purpose of introducing a new format -- reviving profits from disc sales. But if one could keep this up until after the other goes out of business, then the survivor will be able to get any price it wants.

After yesterday's stunning news about Warner's Blu-ray exclusivity starting June 2008, it appears that Blu-ray has finally won the war.  And with the competition out of the way, what will stop Blu-ray from jacking up its prices this time?

Eventually, market acceptance and mass production will cause Blu-ray prices to fall.  And when prices fall too low, that would be the cue to introduce yet another new format to milk.

Despite the never-ending introduction of new formats, I'm betting SD DVD will still be around.

Ive read that since 1997, 2007 is the first time DVD sales went down versus the year before, something like 4% (sorry i cant remember the link).   With the Warner announcement, Blu-ray will be up against a very formidable foe now in DVD.  ;)

Blu-ray also has another foe.......the drop in DVD sales was attributed not to HD media, but to video on demand and internet downloads.... ;)

Let's also not forget that US, Europe, Japan and the rest of the industrialized nations have started to broadcast TV shows in high-def.  It is just a matter of time.  Whether you like it or not, you can't stop progress.

High-def will only be a fad in the Philippines.  We're still getting movies in DVD5!  Knowing how our local DVD industry operates, they'll just copy a DVD title to a blueray disc and sell it as high-def.

I know there are much deeper economic facets to justify its valid existence, but VCDs should have never been introduced in the market. VHS tapes had better quality PQ and reliability than VCDs and it's a shame we have this neanderthal "link" still in the stores.
Title: Re: POLL: Are You Upgrading From DVD to HD DVD/Blu-ray? (Please Vote!)
Post by: barrister on Jan 07, 2008 at 03:56 PM
VCDs were actually developed in 1993 by Sony, Philips, Matsushita and JVC.  In 1987, these companies released the "White Book", a standard for CDs containing sound and video/still pictures.

Thus, VCD appeared before the development of DVD, and was intended as an optical alternative to the magnetic tape of VHS.  VCD became very popular in Asia not only because they were cheaper, but also because they can better withstand the high heat and humidity of the region.

I would say that VCD served its purpose in the South East Asian region prior to the introduction and mass market acceptance of DVD.

To those who believe that the Pinoy mass market will be shifting to HD video in the near future, consider this:

DVD has already given us quality and reliability that is vastly superior to VCD, yet VCD remains popular, even after DVD prices have become very reasonable.  Notice that there are no more generic VCD-only players today (generics today are available as DVD players that are VCD-compatible), yet VCD continues to be popular.

With this premise, it's unlikely that the mass market will be interested in HD.  The ordinary Pinoy consumer wll eventually shift to DVD, but HD video will still be a long way off.

Just look at pinoydvd.  This is a video enthusiast's forum, yet there are so many members ignoring HD formats.  What more for the non-enthusiasts?

Apple’s iTunes Store movies outsell HD DVD, Blu-ray titles (http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/16111/)

Interesting data.  Similar to DVD-Audio & SACD vs. MP3.

Now that HD DVD is out of the way, let's see if there will be a different trend in sales figures.

If you're in the States and/or the majority of your collection is R1, then yes, this is a good upscaler at under $100. If you're in the Philippines, though, I'd say it's better to buy any upconverting standard DVD player instead, so Region Code issues won't affect you.

This is the reason why I got a PS3 -- blu ray movie watching.
I am not a hard core gamer. Mas mahilig manood ng movies.
Good thing BR won the war...kasi medyo sayang yung PS3 ko kung nag kataon.

To abvoid the high cost attached to going hi def, pinipili ko lang mga BR na binibili ko.
I still buy SD discs and use my DV 600.

Studios Try to Save the DVD

A winner has finally been declared in Hollywood’s high-definition DVD war. So why isn’t there more cheering?

In the 1980s, the triumph of VHS over Betamax helped develop the lucrative home entertainment market. DVDs, introduced in the 1990s, turned into an even bigger gold mine, accounting for roughly 60 percent of studio profits in recent years, analysts say. The entertainment giants have positioned high-definition DVDs as yet another blockbuster business.

But the victory of Sony’s new Blu-ray high-definition disc over a rival format, Toshiba’s HD DVD, masks a problem facing the studios: the overall decline of the DVD market. Domestic DVD sales fell 3.2 percent last year to $15.9 billion, according to Adams Media Research, the first annual drop in the medium’s history. Adams projects another decline in 2008, to $15.4 billion, and a similar dip for 2009.

So instead of celebrating the Blu-ray format — which remains a nascent business — the studios are scrambling to introduce an array of initiatives aimed at propping up the broader market. Some efforts, like the addition of new interactive features and changes in how DVDs are packaged and promoted, are intended to prevent further market erosion while nurturing Blu-ray.

But media companies are also introducing technology that they hope will solve the more difficult tasks of generating growth and delaying the obsolescence of DVD altogether.

DVD sales are sagging for various reasons, including a flooded marketplace and competition for leisure time. But the Internet is perhaps the biggest enemy.

Technology companies have watered down the DVD market by aggressively pushing Internet downloads. Apple’s iTunes now offers downloads of 500 movies and last month started renting titles like “Spider-Man 3.” Meanwhile, telecommunications providers like Time Warner and Comcast are pushing their faster broadband lines by promoting them as capable of delivering fast downloads.

Movie studios are fighting back by taking a page from the Internet playbook. Indeed, the centerpiece of the market rejuvenation effort is something 20th Century Fox calls “digital copy.” Fox DVDs, starting last month, now come with an additional disc holding a digital file of the title. Consumers can download the file to a computer in about five minutes — far less time than via the Internet — and then watch the movie there or transfer it to their iPod.

“This puts the DVD at the center of the digital revolution and returns the business to a growth trajectory,” said Mike Dunn, the president of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios, Walt Disney and Warner Brothers are all pursuing their own versions of the idea.

Most technology consultants, while not as optimistic about the DVD’s future as Mr. Dunn, are greeting studio efforts with enthusiasm. Tom Adams, the founder of Adams Media Research, said the packaging of digital files with standard DVDs “has the real potential to steal the thunder from the Internet delivery of movies.”

But John Freeman, an industry analyst, sees the effort as a stall tactic. Although digital copies are “a step forward,” he said, that step is tantamount to Hollywood admitting that its lucrative hard-goods business is growing obsolete. Today, digital files on discs; tomorrow, mass downloading straight from the Internet.

I just think that upgrading to hidef must be all or none.  If you still plan to get DVDs then don't upgrade yet to hidef.  Based on experience, I bought a PS3 planning to try Bluray.  Whenever I see a movie title coming out, I now have the dilemma if I am going to get the DVD or the Bluray version as compared before where I don't have a choice but just get the DVD release.  I am very happy already with DVD's specially upconverted via HDMI even on my 80 inch display. Most probably if your budget is limited only to DVD, the choice to buy would always be DVD unless you're filthy rich to buy all titles in hidef without buying DVDs anymore.  Somehow at the back of my mind, I was thinking if buying a Bluray player was a mistake to give me this dilemma.  Or...was it a decision too early???

Even if my setup is fully ready for the entire HD thing (Power amps & latest HD receiver), I still cant imagine popping out 1500++ watch it once then set it aside (my pattern). I simply dont watch movies again & again.

By golly, my fave NIKE golf shirt (Drifit UV Stretch) costs just a little more than that but I use em a lot for years. I know, I know its silly, but just giving a cost analogy here.  ;D

My proposed solution is to make a HD swap club. 1:1, among members who know each other. Obsessive compulsive members are most welcome & "burara" members get banned if they scratch their 3rd disk  :D. Add a few rules here & there and I think many of us can enjoy the full HD thing w/o being debilitated by the cost of software, if we just find ways... :D

We make more friends to boot! For me, the best thing I enjoyed in this site is the friends I made offline, why cant we all enjoy that? @$$h*les not welcome  ;D

I just think that upgrading to hidef must be all or none.  If you still plan to get DVDs then don't upgrade yet to hidef.

I would have to respectfully disagree Bro Doc.  In my experience, I enjoy all sorts of high def contents both legally and otherwise here in Tokyo.  However everytime I visit the Philippines, I still have a blast watching like 30 p*rated DVDs within the short 9 days that I stay there.   Medyo may adjustment period sa simula but after some hours, ok na rin.  My viewing distance in the Philippines is relatively farther than that of Tokyo, making image imperfections of non high def movies less visible.  In my opinion, it really depends on the movie itself, the viewing distance, and it helps if you have a decent quality HT that you can crank up without worrying about the police knocking at your door for disturbing the neighborhood. HDM and DVDs are still very much complementary for me.

In my case, the only casualty are those 700MB avi movie files.  I totally lost interest in watching them small/windowed or heavily pixellated in fullscreen due to availability of 4.5GB high def X.264 format files.

Disk swapping (or file sharing) is a good idea basta ingatan lang yung disk please.

Somehow I get to think that upgrading your system to hidef warrants you to watch HD software.  Sayang ang investment if you still feed your HD system with SD DVDs and not maximize the potential of your gears.  Pag nakatikim na ng mas maganda, bakit pa babalik sa pangit? Just my 2 cents.  ;D

Agree, but I tend to take some special exceptions whenever I visit Manila.   ;D
And there's another issue nga pala.  Both the Wife and I tend to get extra dizzy when we watch too much high def.  Somehow, switching to DVD brings some relief   ;D ;D ;D

I have actually been swapping with a member here w/ SD for over a year now. I must admit I have saved tons of moolah w/c I just channeled to my gears. I realized I change gears more often than watch a movie the 2nd time.  :D

An option is to get a video scaler. Yes it might be more expensive, but it may be cheaper than renewing your entire P300k DVD collection. I have seen the video processor work at LIS with a Meridian Faroudja flagship video processor inside a Meridian digital receiver/DVDplayer. And at Streetsmart's setup with a video processor. It was hard to spot the difference between HD & SD, but there are differences, just not night & day.

HTPC processed with a good HD video card is also an option.

Yesterday, I came from a meeting w/ the owner of one of the 4 legit CD factories in the Phils.

I saw how they do these CD's & VCD's, interesting!

A machine costs some 70m pesos. They started with 1 machine now they have 3. Their quality control machine cost 16m. One machine can do 20k CD's a day

The above statistics (do the math) kinda shows you the thriving market share of (legit) VCD's. Its alive & kicking, & I doubt it will die easily.

The owner is planning to go bluray  :o :o :o, but still thinking of the options. Right now only Sony has a bluray plant in Japan, w/c probably accounts for the high prices now. When bluray disc plants are aplenty then we might see these prices drop. But I wonder when that will be?

Actually SD DVDs aren't bad.  Something better just came out.  If Bluray didn't exist we wouldn't know any better.  We would still be enjoying our DVDs and feel we have the best audio and video source there is.  Even upscaled DVDs aren't bad at all.  In small TV screens where the majority of us still use, the video difference would be minimal between SD and HD for us to shell out that extra dough.  The big difference would only be appreciated with PJ owners who I think are a minority in the general viewing public.

IMHO, upgrading to Bluray at this point is too early.  Prices of software is still high & a lot of upgrading of hardware is still in the process to fix the bugs.

I just bought a PS3 out of curiousity.  Whenever a title I want comes out, I am still contemplating on buying a DVD rather than Bluray primarily because of the cost of the software.   The enjoyment of watching that title would be on par with watching it in Bluray anyway.  Actually, I can sell my PS3 without remorse at this time and still enjoy standard DVDs.  The dilemma would be gone.

That's just me though airing my thoughts at 5am.  :D

True.

And not all HD titles released exhibit superb PQ, I still have to check the reviews first before buying. The ones that fall 3/5 stars & below I just buy it in dvd.

But still, nothing beats Kingkong & Transformers in full 80" HD glory . . . nakaka-spoil parang ayaw ko na manood ng SD :D

It's about time reviewers change the scale ng grading to 1-100.  Parang US grading system ang 1-5, A-E.  Di mo talaga maintindihan WTF is the diff between a 3 and a 3.5.   Tapos parang puro cut-and-paste pa reviews.

It's not just the price of hardware that makes the general public think twice about jumping into HD but also the price of the Bluray discs which come at about 1.5k a pop sa mga Astros.

1.5k per movie is really steep

I was an early adapter of SD DVD. The first DVD player I bought, a Sony, costed 36K! And DVDs cost around 2K shipped from Amazon.

Yup, I upgraded to Bluray, but retained my interest in DVDs.

The price of BDs are indeed steep at shops which sell them, but you can always purchase BDs thru the net (locally, that is). I avoid purchasing from these shops considering that there are those who sell BDs at prices you cannot resist (800.00 to 1K only). In addition to the shop mentioned here, there is another shop in GH which sells BDs (& HD-DVDs) at 1.8K to 2.1K. Whew!!!! >:(   Now, that's a rip-off!!!!

Just know where to find these BDs and you will have no problems in your upgrade. We usually don't think twice purchasing DVD's with prices ranging from 800 to as high as 1.2K, so why not splurge on BDs then which are sold at the same price range?  ;D

Are you referring to the shop on the 3rd floor of VMall with a computer shop subleasing in its store?  Well, that store has been around for quite a while and indeed sells DVDs, BDs at super high prices.  Although, sometimes sinusumpung and will sell some of their old stocks are rockbottom prices!

yes i just bought a 2nd hand ps3 out of curiosity. i really cant wait long i wana experience watching hi def movies from my lcd tv. although the price of blu ray disc are extremely high, i settled for hd downloads via internet and truly the PQ is really great. DVDs even played w/ so called upscaling dvd player arent good enough compared to full hd movie downloads. Yet i must admit as of date we really cant enjoy hd quality movies to its fullest extent yet prices are still high and we all have to wait til the time is ripe for blu rays to bow to the masses just like dvds nowadays.

You're right pchin  :). Like most hobbies, it is indeed a continuing project. Yun nga lang, I'm sort of an impulse buyer. When I want somthing, deretso canvass then bili after a few days pag di pa rin nawawala yung urge. Siguro later on i'll be upgrading to better equipment. Di naman masasayang yung gamit ko kasi my kids will get to benefit from my "old" stuff. As one of my uncles said when he bought his lcd player some years ago when prices were still sky high, "but I'm enjoying it now, and I would not have to wait for some more years before I would experience it." Then I talked to him about BD. It turned out that he didn't know that there was such a thing as BD. Ayun, plano na bumili ng player this weekend pero makikinood daw muna sya sa akin bago bumili. Cheers!

I bought my PS3 last September 2007 when Sony offered the 60gb w/ free 5 BD movies as mail-in rebate @ $499 + tax. It's the free BD that enticed me to have one.

Well, I have a DVD home theater and the brand name is SONY DAV-DZ556KB
and a BRAVIA KLV-32V300A TV.

I just recently adapted the format even though I only use a BD-R Drive for my PC but i should say that I've never seen such richness in color, sharpness in picture and added BOOOOM to my sound system. I can't wait to go FULL HD sometime next year kung makumbinsi na si pops bumili ng gears! hehehe!

I'll still be purchasing a lot of DVD's that's for sure due to the obvious high price of BD movies but I'll purchase (or double dip) BD movies that I like to watch over and over again and for those I consider priceless and collector's choice.

I find it advantageous to go Blu at this point in time where BD's are still in market penetration stage for the prices takes too long to go down. Talagang sulit yung expensive price given naman the quality it offers (and the opportunity to brag as to "I got one first!" in the Latest Purchases threads hehehe!). Unlike the trend now with DVD's na months (unpredictable sometimes) after release lagapak agad ang price which is also good (I can buy more) but in terms of value and resell value, mababa talaga.

Naiinis na nga ako kasi mga kilala ko madami pang Blu-Ray cased DVD movies eh yun pala galing lang sa mga Pirates of Caribbean. Haaay naku.. nakakawala ng class and a sense of 'separation'! hehehe! ;D

Mabuhay!

@JhOpZzZz
  altec or nextbase

to answer the question, nope not yet because :

1) as of now its way to pricey for moi
2) LCDs & plasmas or HDTVs are again way to pricey for moi
3) the technology tremendously improved viewing experience but its still not enticing enough still looking for more quality freebies that come along with the package  ;D hehehhe
4) siguro kapag marami na akong disposable income...bwahahahhaha

Happy New Year

Jumped ship for Bluray in December 2006 (Samsung BD-P1000) and HD DVD (HD-A3) in January 2008 along with a PS3..only to sell my HD DVD player in September ...

I still have my DVD and continue to buy those movies that i think dont deserve the extra buck for bluray

Thanks!

When you say upgrades, this is a privilege. This is also a question if you want to upgrade your car. Of course everybody wants the best right.
These might help your survey,
Some of the reason why most of us don't want to upgrade because of the following:

1. Cost of the Upgrade - If you upgrde with the HD you need to replace your Player, Amplifier to decode HD Audio and of course Display monitor.
2. Availability of SW (Blu Ray  not to mention the cost). People living outside Metro Manila and no time or access to the Net might have a problem acquiring this new HD Disk

To answer this HD is addictive once you have it, you never want to go back on any SD Movies ;D
I have both PS3 and Blu-Ray Players

Yes, I would,.. given that I recently bought a plasma TV,
I would surely maximize its capabilities, besides dun na din mauuwi yan sa bandang huli,...

I just hope prices of the discs and players would go down soon...

regards,
ABC

2008 pa pala ang post ko dito,
I did added a BD player sa system ko,
but from 2009 up to 2011, parang 20 discs lang
ang nabili ko due to the fact na ang mahal ng discs.
My advice to sa ibang gustong magdagdag ng HD
sa system nila ay go with the media player,
I got mine last January 20th, and from that time
up to now, nasa 200 HD titles na ang naipon ko,
If I was aware na hindi sila naglalayo ng PQ and AQ,
malamang sa hindi na ako bumili ng BD player...  :P

cheers,..!
ABC

Compare to the last two years, now you can find quite a number of BD titles selling at $10 (less than P450) in Amazon. As for the newer titles, the average price is around P800-P900+ each similar to DVD initial stage. After a few months some of these will drop in price. It's much more affordable now but of course we want it to be much lower... ;D

I'll definitely shift to blu-ray when I buy a PS3.

Then I'll start buying at Amazon considering all Blu-ray movies includes a DVD copy of it which is good, since I can still watch my DVDs to enjoy my surround sound :)

If you want the best media experience you can have. Go with home theater PC. You can do everything you want. Good investment with a home theater PC just satisfies my soul. Blu-Ray writer / DVD and you can have a media center with it. And Rip all your Blu-ray copies for good archives.
