Title: Electronics Shows
Post by: barrister on Jan 04, 2008 at 02:00 PM
In order to keep track of the very latest display tech, we should have a separate thread for easy reference.

How about a thread for electronics shows?  We can check it out when we want to keep up to date with the latest and the greatest.

Next major show will be at CES 2008, scheduled on Jan. 7-10 in Vegas.

The latest buzz is the world's thinnest plasma TV, by Pioneer.  It's rumored that the new TV will be unveiled at this year's CES.

No details yet.  But there's a leaked video posted on youtube (15 secs., no sound):

Panasonic Rolling Out 150-Inch Plasma at CES
Wed Jan 2, 2008 2:10PM EST

It's about to become the worst-kept secret of next week's CES: Panasonic is rolling out an unthinkably large, 150-inch plasma television (yes, a plasma), massively eclipsing the current size leader, a 108-inch LCD from Sharp that was unveiled at CES last year.

Samsung To Show 31” OLED TV
By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 12/27/2007 9:32:00 AM

Seoul, South Korea — Samsung SDI, the display screen manufacturing unit of Samsung Electronics, plans to show a prototype 31-inch ultra-thin OLED screen at International CES, Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas, according to a Reuters report.

The announcement came as Sony began selling an 11-inch OLED-based TV in Japan.

Panasonic 150-inch plasma: 4k definition is here

It wasn't much of a surprise when Panasonic announced its 150-inch plasma at its keynote press conference.  We'd been hearing rumours about it for some time ... . Still, Panasonic must have been laughing at the rumours, because no one actually managed to guess the little surprise it had up its sleeve.

And what a surprise it was, because it turns out that not only was the Panasonic massive -- it certainly makes the 103-inch model look weedy -- but it is also a 4k-resolution screen.

Sony delivers the first 240Hz LCDs November 10

Sure Samsung had 240Hz (and wavier hair) first, but with its TVs stuck in development until 2011, Sony's back with another first / best of the night in the W1 series display, packing four times the speed of previous LCD HDTVs, and double that of the new 120Hz your best friend just picked up. Allegedly smoother than Billy Dee Williams cracking open a Colt 45 in Cloud City, the KDL-46W1 and KDL-40W1 bring 1080p with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing, 24p support and an assortment of hookups from modem to HDMI. Stop by your nearest Japanese electronics shop November 10 to get a peep at these and their slim, sexy sister, but bring ¥400,000 ($3,652 U.S.) for the 46-inch or ¥290,0000 ($2,648 U.S.) for the 40-inch -- you could try showing up without it, but why take chances?

CES: Panasonic Unveils 54-inch Diagonal 1-inch Thick Z1 Plasma HDTV (TC-P54Z1)
By Chris Boylan
Published: 2009-01-08 - 07:13:06

At CES in Las Vegas this week, Panasonic introduced a new flagship model in their 1080p full high definition plasma HDTV line: the TC-P54Z1 plasma HDTV. The new set measures in at 54 inches diagonally but only one inch thick. To simplify the installation and eliminate the need to hide wires behind the TV, the set's high definition digital tuner and connectivity pack (HDMI inputs, network connection, etc.) are included on a separate tuner component that broadcasts the full HD 1080p picture to the set wirelessly without any loss of resolution.

IFA and 3D Wars: Blu-Ray is Once Again Obsolete
By Rob Enderle, principal analyst, Enderle Group
Thursday, September 03, 2009 11:53

IFA is the big consumer electronics conference in Europe and it is vastly better timed than CES coming before the holiday season so you can get excited about stuff to buy rather than right after when you are trying to hide from your credit card bill.

There is a lot of cool stuff here at the show but something that immediately jumped out at me was that Panasonic and Sony were effectively announcing both the obsolescence of existing Blu-Ray and HD TV products but a new format war this time for 3D.   The 3D demonstrations were hot but having two large vendors once again not in agreement as to which one will be adopted brings back bad memory of other format wars and I want to hide under my desk.  This won’t show up until late 2010 and both vendors are showing both Movie and Gaming 3D content.

The Two Formats

Based on what both vendors showcased it appears that Sony is going the Dolby Real 3D route that uses polarized glasses and is most common in the best 3D theaters at the moment. Panasonic is using active shutter glasses which is a vastly more complex, but often better looking, alternative that requires much more expensive glasses and isn’t common in theaters.    The active glasses approach does results in a better overall picture but the glasses have to be powered they have to receive a signal in order to synchronize their shutters and the glasses tend to be comparatively expensive.

The Polarized approach is vastly easier and less expensive to do but screen angle can be a problem and the result generally isn’t as realistic (at least not to my eye).    In short the Sony approach is more affordable and the Panasonic is more interesting technically.  Both technologies have come a long way and after watching both demos I think I would be personally very happy with either.

The Curse of 3D TV
Tech makers think three dimensions are the next big thing after HD. God, I hope not.
By Harry McCracken  |  Posted at 5:10 pm on Friday, September 3, 2010

... Perversely, the 3D showings of live events at the show, such as Sony’s press conference, served mostly as a useful reminder of how artificial this “3D” is. In person, Sir Howard and Lang Lang looked like people; on the 3D screen, the versions on the jumbo 3D screen resembled humongous puppets.

As a medium, 3D remains remarkably self-trivializing. Virtually nobody who works with it can resist thrusting stuff at the camera, just to make clear to viewers that they’re experiencing the miracle of the third dimension. When Lang Lang banged away at his piano during Sony’s event, a cameraman zoomed in and out on the musical instrument for no apparent reason, and one of the company’s representatives kept robotically shoving his hands forward. Hey, it’s 3D–watch this!

Now, new technologies are certainly allowed to call attention to themselves. (1927′s The Jazz Singer, the first popular talkie, is mostly a silent film–except when Al Jolson breaks out in song.) But 3D isn’t new. It’s existed for sixty years in one form or another. And almost all of it is still merely a needy, attention-grabbing novelty, barely more dignified than Smell-O-Vision. ...

12.28.2010

... Last year at CES all anyone could talk about was 3D TV and how it would completely transform our living rooms by the end of the year. Well, you can see how that turned out. 3D TV adoption is growing slowly, and it's easy to see why. First, there's still nothing to watch: the number of 3D Blu-ray discs available barely clears the double-digit mark, and you can count the number of 3D broadcast channels on a single hand.

A Tablet for Panasonic’s Television

LAS VEGAS — If the two prevailing themes at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show have been Internet-connected televisions and tablet computers, then Panasonic is aiming to kill both birds with one stone.

Panasonic’s tablet is intended to function with its Viera line of televisions. The company is showing off a prototype tablet, the Viera Tablet, that is primarily intended to complement its Viera Connect Internet television service, which allows viewers to use a series of apps on their televisions. The television can also interact with various devices, including a scale and an armband that Panasonic is touting as way to turn a television into a home-workout system.

CES: Eyes-on with Vizio’s passive 3D TV displays
By Ben Patterson ben Patterson – Thu Jan 6, 1:26 pm ET

Who wants to pay $100 for a single pair of active-shutter 3D glasses? Good question—and maybe that's why 3D TV sets using cheaper, polarized 3D glasses are making such a big splash at CES.

Bargain TV maker Vizio is just one of the manufacturers showing off its passive-glasses 3D displays this year (LG is another), and yes — they work as advertised, using (more or less) the same polarized glasses you'll find in movie theaters. Unfortunately, there are trade-offs.

First, a quick 3D primer. Active-shutter technology (which made up the bulk of last year's 3D TV announcements) uses battery-powered glasses with ultrafast LCD "shutters" that open and close in sync with a 3D TV, with the lens for, say the right eye opening at the precise moment that the image intended for that eye appears on the screen.

The beauty of the "active shutter" technique is that both your eyes get to see the full resolution of your gorgeous, 1080p 3D TV. The downsides? Active-shutter glasses, as everyone knows, aren't cheap, and those rapidly opening-and-closing lenses lead to a fair amount of (annoying) flicker.

Polarized "passive" glasses, on the other hand, are pretty much like cheap sunglasses, with the left and right lens polarized in different ways (usually in a circular pattern) so that each individual eye sees only what it's supposed to see — no pricey LCD shutters required.
Bargain TV manufacturer that it is, Vizio has decided to go the passive route with its 3D TV displays this year, and while the company hasn't announced pricing for its new 3D TVs yet, the glasses should be dirt cheap — as in $10 or so, with some Vizio sets shipping with four pairs of shades.

But trade-offs are the name of the game when it comes to 3D TV, and passive-glasses technology doesn't get a pass.

Vizio's passive 3D TVs work by interlacing the left and right 3D images together on the screen, at the same time — take the glasses off, and the screen image will look a little jagged, akin to the interlaced SD pictures on older tube TVs.

With the glasses on, pow — everything's in 3D, and the 3D effect looks pretty cool, as advertised. The only problem is that you're effectively seeing only half the resolution that you'd normally see in a 2D HD image, and on Vizio's bigger 3D TV sets (in the 50-inch range), horizontal scan lines are clearly visible. It's not exactly the best way to watch, say, the gorgeous 3D effects in "Avatar."

On the other hand, there's no distracting flicker at all — a great upside, if you ask me — and it's a comparative joy wearing a light pair of polarized 3D glasses rather than the bulky active-shutter models.

One thing to consider, though, is that the half-resolution 3D problem becomes less of a factor with smaller displays. I tried out Vizio's 32-inch 3D set and came away quite pleased with the image; I could barely make out the horizontal scan lines, and again, no flicker to speak of. (Vizio will be putting out 3D TVs as small as 22 inches this year, but it gets hard to discern the 3D effect with a screen that small.)

Vizio hasn't announced pricing for its new line of passive 3D sets (due to arrive this summer), but I'm told that its current 32-inch, 2D HDTV sells for about $300 — and it's conceivable that the new 3D models won't come with that much of a premium.

So who knows — perhaps a smaller, bargain 3D TV with cheap polarized glasses might be the ticket for, say, 3D gamers, or anyone who wants an eye-popping 3D video experience on a budget.

As for the perfect 3D setup, though — complete with a full HD picture, and cheap or even no glasses — the search continues.

3D TV? No thanks. More resolution? Yes, please!
by Harry McCracken |October 12, 2011 6:00 AM PDT

I rarely root against specific technologies, but I cheerfully admit to actively disliking a "breakthrough" that TV companies have been irrationally exuberant about for the last couple of years: 3D TV.

... But I am enthusiastic about another TV technology that's headed--slowly--toward our living rooms. That would be super-high-resolution TV, with far more lines of detail than the 1080p picture that currently sets the standard for high-quality TV. And so when I attended the Ceatec electronics show in Tokyo last week, I was pleased to see that 3D had a low profile--and that higher high-definition TV was one of the big stories.

LG 55-inch OLED TV first video and pictures
By Vlad Savovon January 9, 2012 12:06 pm

It's real, people! LG's mythical 55-inch OLED TV was just unveiled here at CES 2012, and honestly, it's even more amazing than the words "55-inch OLED" would lead you to believe. It was making love to our eyes for half the press conference after the sheet was whipped off, and now that we've had a chance to get up close for a better look, we're even more impressed. Honestly, we can't wait to see what Samsung will counter with later on at CES.

Uy Panasonic skipped "4" because it's a bad number to the Japanese.   Pamahiin.

One day, the Japanese will invent a new word that is synonymous to blacker than the darkest side of the force.

I saw a documentary in NHK last year which showed that the engineers behind the passive 3D tech of LG were Japanese who got disgruntled with their Japanese TV companies and decided to be pirated by the Koreans who really wanted their know-how.  Some OLED engineers of LG must have come from Sony?

Review from the CES 2013 floor:

Panasonic TX-P60ZT60
By John Archer
9 Jan 2013 11:08

... In particular, its black level response was almost unbelievably good. What we'd previously admired as class-leading blacks on the the VT50 were left looking green and grey by the truly immaculate blacks delivered by the P60ZT60. Seriously, the impact of the demo was akin to the gasps of amazement that met Pioneer's final KURO demo before that company withdrew from the TV market.

To me, the 4K OLED is the most impressive CES 2013 item.

The press is making it sound like there's fierce OLED competition between Panny and Sony, each presenting a "Worlds Largest" 56" 4K OLED for this year's trade show.

Actually, Panny and Sony have an OLED manufacturing partnership.

Dolby Bets on Brightness to Transform TV
1:53 pm
Dec 10, 2013

... “On brightness, we are off by a factor of 200,” said Pat Griffis, executive director of technology strategy, during a briefing with reporters last week.

Of course, staring at the equivalent of a 100-watt bulb would be intolerable. But real TV images mix dark and light, limiting the risks of harsh glare, Rockwell wrote. The key is to have sharp contrast with bright and dark points of an image.

“If you just raise the brightness of a TV display without increasing the contrast, you end up with dull, washed-out images,” Rockwell said. “When you raise both, something magical happens: images on the TV start to look like the real world.”

CES 2014 Is Turning Into A Funeral For 3D
For some technologies, the Consumer Electronics show is like a hospital.

... CES 2010 was all about 3D TV, as was CES 2011. The next year, the industry’s hangover was setting in — by CES 2013, 3D had become fully commodified. It was included in TVs and simply listed as a feature. It was there because it had no reason not to be, not because anyone was asking for it.

In 2014, however, manufacturers are beginning to wonder if 3D is even worth an afterthought.

Malabo na ang support sa Smart Evolution.  Looks like Samsung will let it quietly die.

As for plasma, Samsung assured CNET editor David Katzmaier that they will be producing a 2014 line of plasmas:

Samsung: We'll have new plasmas, just not at CES 2014
Among the two remaining TV makers that produce plasma TVs,
LG and Samsung, only LG is announcing any plasmas at CES 2014.

Analyzing the CNET article, it looks like Samsung will also be exiting plasma sometime soon.

First, notice that there are no plans to improve their plasma line; in fact, model features are going to be on a downgrade direction.

Second, their 2014 plasmas are scheduled for a mid-year release, a sign of an impending phase-out, the same way they quietly phased out their rear projection TVs.

========================================

LG will have 5 plasmas for 2014:

- 2013's PN4500 (42" & 50" 720p, no 3D, no SMART);
- Flagship PN6900 (60" 1080p 3D, no SMART);

For the 2014 models, it's too early to tell which ones will not be released here.

... Stroll around the halls of CES and you'll see plenty of weird things, but one of the more legitimately impressive sights is provided by Panasonic and its curved OLED displays. Six 55-inch panels are lined up in an S shape in the middle of the Japanese company's booth: three concave screens connect to three convex ones to create the shape.

Among the two remaining TV makers that produce plasma TVs,
LG and Samsung, only LG is announcing any plasmas at CES 2014.
by David Katzmaier | January 6, 2014 2:00 PM PST
http://ces.cnet.com/8301-35303_1-57616627/samsung-well-have-new-plasmas-just-not-at-ces-2014/ (http://ces.cnet.com/8301-35303_1-57616627/samsung-well-have-new-plasmas-just-not-at-ces-2014/)

========================================

LG will have 5 plasmas for 2014:

- 2013's PN4500 (42" & 50" 720p, no 3D, no SMART);
- Flagship PN6900 (60" 1080p 3D, no SMART);
- PB6600 (60" & 50" 1080p, no 3D, no SMART);
- PB5600 (60" 1080p, no 3D, no SMART); and
- PB560 (50" 720p, no 3D, no SMART).

i don't know but LG plasmas are not good...

It's nonsense, of course.  I'm sure the claim generated gales of suppressed snickers from the videophiles in attendance...  :D  Good thing they presented OLED TVs on Jan. 7.

i don't know but LG plasmas are not good...

That's right.  Picture quality not good; performance reliability not good.  After-sales service used to be very good, but pdvd posts say it's bad now.

I've seen LG's PN4500 series and IMO, they have better PQ than Samsung's entry-level plasma tvs. I would consider one for cable tv viewing.  :)

im not sure if getting the VT60 was a good move since meron naman akong few months old na UT50,, im coming from the perspective na mukhang inevitable na ang pag sikat ng 4k this year.- dapat ba nag intay na lang ako na bumaba ang price ng 4k this year?

Buying the VT60 was a very good move.

Even if you already have a UT50, what TV will beat it in 2-3 years?  You won't be able to find a VT60 or ZT60 by then, and I'm guessing LG and Samsung won't be making any more plasmas by then either.  So you'll be stuck with the inferior tech of LED TVs.

4K ang iniisip mo.  Inevitable nga ba ang pagsikat ng 4K?  I don't think so.  Baka hindi rin maging mainstream.  Nobody knows at this point.

Palagay na nating sumikat nga ang 4K.  You waited a few years, then bumili ka ng 4K.  Satisfied na?  Hindi pa rin.  Ang magiging tanong mo naman, tama ba ang pagbili ko ng 4K, kasi mukhang inevitable na ang pagsikat ng 8K?   :D

Walang katapusan yan.  Ang gusto ng manufacturers ay high profit.  PQ is incidental.  The best ang plasma, pero pag mahina ang profit, phase out yan.  Bibigyan nila tayo ng 4K not because 4K is great, but because they think 4K is the way to make more profit.

Anchit ang planned first 4K broadcast sa Japan ay sa finals palang ng World Cup this 2014.  So isang laro lang yon. Pagkatapos noon, kelan ang susunod na broadcast ay wala pang plano.  Yung 8K daw is in 2016 - DAW yon ha - malamang birds and bees and mountains and clouds and buildings and seas and ladies in yellow bikini pa rin yon.  I dont know sa Australia kung meron nang clear plan to start 4K broadcast pero AFAIK, wala pa rin.

So since those 4K LEDS suck when displaying regular HD broadcast, walang reason for you to bother about 4K TVs for a while.   Mas magandang di hamak ang plasmas mo for the current broadcast standard and high def content standard.

Now yung dilemma mo between the UT50 and the VT60 - that's very interesting.

hahaha not really a dilemma between ut50 and vt60, ng iniisip ko lang, baka biglang next year 4k tv will go mainstream, so instead na ut50 to vt60 then another jump to 4k in just 1 year baka mas ok na ut50 then 4k. But from what Im seeing here sa Australia, mas conservative sila dito, wala pa din talks on 4k broadcast.

No problem with inputs, since the TV will take any standard input and internally upscale it to 8K before displaying the signal on the panel.

There will always be a buyer for ultra-expensive gadgets, even if none of them can beat an F8500 plasma or EC9300 OLED in picture quality.  The real problem is, how many will buy it.  Kaya nga until now, wala pa ring production model, puro prototype lang.  This is really a statement piece by LG --- it's supposed to be a statement that LG is now the world's best TV manufacturer.  Selling the 8K is not the real objective, but they hope that if the public is sufficiently impressed, they'll be buying more of LG's other TV models.

Pero hindi naman bago ang 8K.  2007 pa lang, may UHDTV standard na ang SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) --- UHDTV1 (3840×2160 or 4K UHDTV) and UHDTV2 (7680x4320 or 8K UHDTV).

August 2012 pa lang, may 8K prototype plasma na ang Panasonic, which I posted on this thread:

Panasonic Goes UHDTV With 145″ 8K Plasma & 20-Inch 4K LCD TVs
By Vincent Teoh • Wednesday, 29 August 2012, 9:41 pm BST

Although Panasonic’s press conference at the IFA 2012 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin this afternoon was largely dominated by ecological and smart living themes, the company hasn’t neglected its visual display products which have almost always impressed us here at HDTVTest (plasma-wise anyway). The Japanese TV manufacturer took this opportunity to reveal its vision of future display technologies, which unsurprisingly includes the latest fad in town – UHDTV or ultra high-definition television.

IFA 2012 pa lang yan, 145" 8K na.  This year at IFA 2014, lumiit pa nga, 98" na lang ang 8K, and they still manage to make it sound like this is only the first year that an 8K prototype has ever been displayed.

Eyes-On with Panasonic's AX900 LED/LCD Ultra HD TV: Is It Really a Plasma Killer?

You don't normally see LED/LCD TVs on display at a trade show in very dark rooms, as this environment tends to highlight LED/LCD sets' poor black level performance and lighting uniformity, but that's exactly what Panasonic is doing this week in Berlin. Behind black drapes in a pitch black room we find three TVs: a WT600 model (2013 flagship 4K TV), the new AX900 (also 4K), and last year's killer plasma, the ZT60. I've honestly never seen an LED set really compete with a plasma in black level performance and color saturation but the AX900 does give plasma a run for its money.

I've seen Samsung's 78" curved UHD LED TV up close. it's brightness was good. but backlight bleeding was very noticeable, plus a flat Sharp 70" LED TV still produces better blacks than it.  :-\

Today at the CEDIA 2014 Expo in Denver, LG officially confirmed pricing for its 65- and 77-inch 4K OLED televisions, and the figures aren’t exactly what some may have expected. According to LG, the 65-inch 4K OLED (65EC9700) will be priced at $10,000 retail, and the 77-inch model (77EG9700) will be marked at a stiff $25,000. The former is due out this October and the latter in November 2014.

TVs at CES 2015 go beyond 4K
4K is already old hat. The rapidly falling prices of 4K TVs are causing manufacturers to
push even more elaborate features to make a buck. That's why quantum dots, HDR and
curved, bendable and ultra-slim TVs were so prominent this year.

CES 2016 TV tech: 4K yawns, high dynamic range dawns
At the television-tech-heavy Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this January,
TVs with 4K resolution are old hat. So what's new hat? The next-generation TV
technology known as high dynamic range (HDR).

Every few years at the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world gets introduced to a new buzzword in television technology. Not too long ago it was 3D, then it was OLED, then it was 4K and Ultra High Definition.

In January 2016, I'm betting the buzzword most uttered in the presence of 100-inch flat panels on the show floor will be "HDR," which stands for high dynamic range.

TV reviewers -- folks like me who try to help you decide what's actually worth buying -- look at HDR as a potentially more important improvement than 3D or 4K. Its benefits can be more visible than 4K and more broadly appealing than 3D.
