Title: Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre
Post by: byron on Feb 11, 2008 at 09:29 AM
Hi Guys,
I just remembered these Faerie Tale TV series which I was crazy about when I was a kid during the 1980s and I finally found them on DVD!  When I searched Amazon - they are expensive and they do not have stocks of this - only the 3rd party vendors have this with HIGH Prices starting from $150 i think to as high as $500+++

I have some questions:
1.) to the guys that have this - is the DVD set worth the money?  (please elaborate)
2.) would anybody know if a blu-ray version of this will come out?
3.) anybody selling this brand new and how much?

Many thanks!

They are two-sided discs.  It comes on a spindle.  They are fairy tales alright, but many of the screenplay have double meaning, that kids would interpret it one way, while adults would pick up the adult (ie sexual) cues.  I picked up a set when it was a much cheaper also third-party/Amazon.  I guess it will be re-released eventually , but I don't know when.  If I remember right, there was a even older version that also went out-of-print, before the current version comes out.

Blu-ray?  I don't know, but probably not anytime soon...

I will dig up my set and post more observations in a day or two...

hmmm double meanings - i did not notice this back then when i was a kid hahaha

very interesting.  I hope to get a copy of the new release instead.  $150 is way too expensive for me for this.

Thanks techdude!

Hey, I love this show in the '80's. I had a grand time watching this show with some twist in the usual faerie tales we've known. I particulaly like the Peter MacNicol starrer, THE BOY WHO LEFT HOME TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE SHIVERS. Nifty episode of that show, supported by no less than scream greats, Christopher Lee and Vincent Price (Narrator). A perfect family viewing during Halloween! Found that episode though in YouTube if you're interested byron. :) By the way, it's worth it if you're a big fan.

hi thegoodbyeguy,
sigh.  you know that voice at the back of your head? 2 voices actually - one is bugging me to buy it, the other is saying it is too expensive. hahaha  i'll take a look at the you tube tip....  I really love the show, but I just hope that there'll be a blu-ray or another release which will equalize the prices.

MANY THANKS GUY!

Yeah, I was among those who inquired about the item, but naunahan nga ako ni frootloops.  The seller is based in Baguio pa yata.   Back then, it's just around $50++ from Amazon (third party), so I decided to get it from people here at PinoyDVD who takes online orders.  I haven't check the price since then, until byron point out that the price has since jumped more than a 100%.

I emailed Starmaker 2 - the manufacturer of the DVD and no response yet... seems like this is a lost cause.  I hope a new release will come out or Blu-ray.
thanks!

guys,
you won't believe this... I got the email below by posting my queries in Starmaker's website:

"We bought all inventory from Starmaker and do have some sets available. A new set will cost you $129.00, plus S&H. Our supplies are very limited though, and you’d have to move ASAP.  As to your other questions, Starmaker will not be re-issuing FFT, as the rights have been bought by a foreign company. We have no idea as to when they’ll come to market, or if they’ll do “Blue-Ray” when they do come back with it.

Hi Froot,
medyo hefty ang $129++  but will consider it.  can't believe what the law of supply and demand did to this DVD...

Double dip time.

'yun nga lang.  Koch Video.  My previous experience with Koch's releases, is that they are not cleaned up as well as say, Criterion.  Most of their releases are also not subtitled.  My guess is that it will be identical to the previous Starmaker (in term of PQ; the Starmaker release is also not subtitled), with the addition of the extra features.

At the very least, it will be cheaper than the OOP one.  My Starmaker DVD set just decreased in value big time. ;)

It's up for preorder:
http://www.amazon.com/Faerie-Tale-Theatre-Happily-After/dp/B001AZIRV8/

At $99.95 SRP (Currently $89.95 at Amazon), I feel it's a bit expensive.  Of course, when it was OOP, it's priced much higher.  But I was expecting something in the vicinity of $70 SRP.  Might wait for Amazon to increase the discount from a measly 10%...

I don't think so.  Koch Video has quite a catalog of DVDs.  Another of their Shelley Duvall title (Tall Tales) is still available (released 2005).  Then again, Faerie Tale Theatre had a pent-up demand for it, so if you don't have it, it might be prudent to buy it than regret later.

As for me, since I already have the earlier edition, I will wait for reviews to see whether the new materials, LE packaging , and extras is worth double dipping.  If it was $60, then it's a no-brainer at $90, I'll wait...again..only becuase I already have a previous edition.

Despite the claim of digital restoration, I really doubt the PQ will be much better than Starmaker's.  Koch Video are not known for good PQ.  I hate that this new edition is still not subtitled or Closed-captioned.  I sometimes have trouble catching words in british-accented English...

Patience pays off!  I stalled when Amazon priced this at $90... now it's 48% off at $51.49!

btw, koch video has put up a website where you get to see the included storybook (at least the cover) and playing cards...

No additional video right? Just the playing cards and new packaging?

One additional 'lost' episodes daw - Grimm Party.  Which is something of a cobbled together episode yata, but not sure.  Also some additional commentary.

Video transfer is probably on par with the old Starmaker, as Various websites has contradictory review.  New 5.1 audio yata...

I am still on the fence on this one, even with the discounted price, since I already have the Starmaker II version.  But the pendulum is swinging towards buy, and would have gave in to temptation, if not for the fact that so many new DVDs to buy until the end of the year...  resist... resist...
