...even if you're already into BluRay?
Will you buy BluRay copies of movies already in your DVD collection?
What will you do with your current DVD collections if you're already into collecting BluRay discs?
-
Yes, DVDs are just irresistible. ;) Am building on my HD collections but whenever there's a great DVD sale, am always tempted to haul it in. With the proliferation of upscaling DVD players and really awesome panels, you can come closer to HD quality so collecting DVDs is still a worthwhile investment.
The question is, with the HD disc discounts in Amazon which places it relatively cheaper vs. some DVDs, will you rather get the HD title? Special DVDs (e.g. Limited Edition, special packs / cases, OOPs etc) are definitely eye candy but one has to check his priority - super PQ/AQ, never mind the extras & novelty factor OR you're an authentic collector of rare and exclusive DVD releases with special packaging and tons of bonus materials / extras? HD-DVD was balancing things out with the 'extra' content (interactive at that), but BD has yet to really focus on this criteria.
Personally when I started collecting HD discs, I told myself I'll just liquidate my DVD coll and divert it to HD titles but as time progressed, I found it possible for these two formats co-exist in my racks. Bought new Oppo and Samsung scalers to match up the PQ - yes HD is still amazing but with the right scaler and panel, one could be a happy camper. ;D HD is my new passion but DVDs are just an integral part of my A/V life (for now at least...) ::)
-
I still buy DVDs. However, I'll buy the Blu-ray format for movies that I really like and will be watched over and over again. ;D ;D ;D
-
Agree with marl-1. DVD & Blu-ray will coexist in my collections. Not all my favourite movies are released in Blu-ray esp TV series, LE, etc. It's also cheaper to get DVD esp TV series. :)
-
I have a few HD-DVD's but I still collect DVD's until now and I don't see myself ending my DVD collecting soon.
I have a Ps3 however, I am not enticed to buy Blu-ray movies anytime soon.
I will probably wait until the BD versions of Godfather and Lawrence of Arabia come out.
PQ and AQ of standard DVD's are still capable in impressing me. :D
-
When I switch to Bluray, I intend to keep buying DVDs. For titles I really liked, I will probably buy Bluray, but majority of what i bought will still be DVDs, because i could play them anywhere in the house (PC, DVD players) whereas I will only have one Bluray player (PS3) for awhile and my 32" setup will not benefit a lot from HD.
No plan to upgrade existing titles to Bluray except some titles that may be out only for a limited time like 'Collector's edition' and Disney Platinum Editions BDs.
-
If and if the whole catalog of The Criterion Collection decides to completely shift to Hi-Definition and consequently halt in their production and support of the standard dvd format, then I guess that will be my cue.
-
Yup, I still purchase BD "versions" of DVDs I already have (collector syndrome, ika nga). And, I will still continue on purchasing DVDs. As marl-1 mentioned, the prices of DVDs are "irresistable". Another thing, BD titles are still limited, though this situation will surely change in the near future.
My DVD & BD collection can "co-exist", as mentioned in this thread. Mas magandang tingnan pag mas marami sila sa cabinet, d ba?. hehehehe. ;D
-
Still DVD for me unless I upgrade from my 42" panel. Since I'm into TV show season collections these days, I don't feel I'm missing a lot. Now if we're talking about the IMAX version of Beowulf... that I felt bad about. :D

Yes.

No, but possibly with a few exceptions.

Well, seeing that my laserdiscs and VHS tapes are still happily existing in my home, I think my DVDs will also enjoy the comforts of my home for years to come.

And I have seen the wallpaper that is your DVD collection sir...... ;D

As for me, I would still buy DVDs if I ever get to buy a BD player. Funny thing though,
I have one HD Combo Disk since it was just 200pesos more than a Region 1 title.
Though I don't have a HD player! Remembrance na lang!
-
Since bluray copies are still very much expensive, i will still buy Dvds coz its a lot cheaper and more practical since the quality isnt that bad. As of bluray perhaps buying and owning 1 or 2 copies of my most watched movies will do just to ease the excitement.
-
probably not. but my shift to blu-ray is still a long time coming.
-
I'll still collect DVDs. But probably be buying DISNEY'S PLATINUM EDITION on BLU RAY.

maganda nga raw tlga ang mga Disney release na BD.

No one can blame you bro....DVD & BD co-exist peacefully :D

Yes, I still do buy DVDs. :) @150, @199... Why not? ;D
Cheers!!!

same reason here ;)

Yuf. Most DVDs still have great PQ and SQ that are near comparable to their original cinema releases (sometimes even better). So no question about that.
Of course, BDs are the next level. If one movie gets released on both formats, I'll naturally get the one with the better quality/value. But I'm still not discounting DVDs for reasons I mentioned above. I'm just glad these new BD players are backward compatible.

DVD = better value
BD = better quality
That's a tricky situation...which is your priority Dan? ;D

I thought it was clear ;)
Just look at the releases for the Planet Earth DVDs/BDs. One has less than stellar PQ but all the special features, while the other only has a marginal leap in quality (still some video issues) with none of the SF in the other released format.
Which would you choose?
-
I only watched disk 1 of Planet Earth in dvd but if the 10 minutes behind the scenes feature per episode was not included in BlueRay, you'll be missing out on something interesting. I like the feature about how they were trying to scout the Amazon trying to film a piranha frenzy.
As with anything, when in doubt, you have to gather more data before making an informed decision.

The BD and HD versions don't have, from what I read and heard, the 5th bonus features disc, Planet Earth - The Future.
It's give and take. I already posted somewhere in here that if you're going to be a completist about it, get the BD for the PQ/SQ and the DVD for the extra features. And those SFs are worth it on their own.
In the next few years, the decision will be less complicated.
-
yes thats true some BD movies dont have the special features w/c some Dvd copies have thats why as of date Dvds are still worth collecting since the price is right

In fact a lot of Blu-ray movies suffer from feature-less discs such as the recent Predator release ???

In a way yes some titles have less features or supplements while others may even come in bare bones. Not all are equal. ;D e.g. old movie Blade Runner has extensive supplements while newer releases such as The Chronicles of Narnia, Fantastic Four: RSS & Hairspray have lots of extra too. :)
As BD progress expect more features & supplements including the "bonus view" becoming more common.

Does this mean that future BD releases on Movies that are in bluray now will include more special features? Thats bad coz if u do own a copy now, u'll have regrets coz future BD releases will definitely be a lot better and cheaper.
-
Definitely. But I will be more meticulous now. ;)

with the new age bluray out in the market, Dvd copy of movies nowadays have improved in quality both picture and audio. I may conclude that movies like music & lyrics , 50 first date, devil wears prada, etc the dvd copy is at par w/ its BD copy. What really excells in BD copies are movies of war, sci fi,& animations.

No one can foresee what BD editions will be released by the studios in the future. It's possible that a better edition with more features/supplements BD will be released depending on the studios. It's very similar to DVD variants: single disc, 2-discs Special Edition, Director's Cut, Limited Edition, Anniversary Edition, Colletor's Edition, Trilogy boxset with bonus disc, etc. ;D
-
most definitely. As long as you've got a decent upscaler... Fully any ligaya ;D
-
Dvds nowadays are indeed of great quality so definitely it will still be patronized by lots of people due to its price drop. Blurays are expensive and perhaps i will take five years before its price will drop for the masses to enjoy.
-
...even if you're already into BluRay?
Yes, not all rooms in the house will have Blu-ray players.
Will you buy BluRay copies of movies already in your DVD collection?
Yes, if I like the movie enough.
What will you do with your current DVD collections if you're already into collecting BluRay discs?
I will still keep my current collection.
-
I plan to upgrade to a blu-ray palyer soon, hopefully before the year ends. :P

no plans for upgrade! :P so still a dvd addict here...

Actually no plans for an upgrade also. I'm pretty content with standard definition DVD.
Ika nga... You don't know what you're missing if you don't have it. ;D Of course I'd get the itch to upgrade to Blu-ray if I see it at demos in stores, but the anxiety dies down pretty quick for me.
-
pag wala pang blu-ray player... DVD parin :D
-
Of course! :D
If my fave movies comes to Blu-Ray, I'll buy them.
Ibang visual experience na 'yun; Just like with regular theater & iMAX. ;)
Parang mga classic comic books, 'pag na-reprint in newer format with new digital colors & glossy paper, people will go for it.
'di naman Girlfriend/Wife 'yan, eh. So, palit agad! Hehehe! ;D
-
If I have the original DVD already, there's no need for me to buy the BD versions. Unless of course it's Star Wars. :)
And with DVDs getting cheaper by the month, it's hard to resist. And it's not as if DVDs are so ugly! They're just not as clear anymore compared to BDs.
I'll only TRY to buy BD movies that have been recently released so that I can take advantage of the new technologies being used in newer movies, rather than buying BDs of older movies that will make it clearer than DVDs but not as astonishing as newer movies. :)
-
Definitely! But if I really love a particular movie so much like Pixar Movies, I'll definitely buy them on Blu-Ray.
-
will surely continue collecting dvds. im content with my upscaler and the price of dvds are affordable. will just collect tmy favorite movies in hi def. ;)
-
Mabuhay!
...even if you're already into BluRay?
CDs/DVDs pa rin. Maybe i'll buy a bluray player after 5 years. For me, its just not practical since the technology is still new (well, for me at least).
Will you buy BluRay copies of movies already in your DVD collection?
Just like what others said, Yes and No. Yes, if i really really really like the movie. And No, since i feel there are going to be a lot of movies coming up with better or improved graphics, sounds etc so i'll just save the money for those things.
What will you do with your current DVD collections if you're already into collecting BluRay discs?
I will still keep my current collections. I still buy CDs since i get more value for my money. hehehe
NOTE: i only upgrade sa mga movies na talagang masasabing "flawless" ang storylines para sa aking taste.
just my two cents worth
Happy New Year!!!
-
From the time i adopted to high definition downloads, I stopped buying DVDs (unless the title, usually old, I want is not yet available in torrent sites) :)

same here ;D
Me too! :)
There are some movies that haven't been uploaded yet, or have super low amount of seeders. For this, I go and buy the original. :)
-
For the time being, its on hold right now. My NMT is giving me tons of stuff to watch.
