Title: US Open 2008
Post by: Munskie on Jun 15, 2008 at 10:28 AM
I just have to create this thread.

Anyone watched the third round?

Tiger Woods provided three super highlights in one round, propelling him into the lead, this despite a tweaked left knee that hurts after every drive.

Two long eagle putts.  One chip-in birdie that was dunked to the hole.   Whew!!!  ;D

Galing Talaga! :o

Although I just saw the highlights, those putts were something else!

The best thing about today's 3rd round is that Tiger teed off at around 7am Tokyo time and finished just after 11:00, hence, walang puyat!!!  Yehey!

My sentinents go to Rocco Mediate.  The guy is sooooo nice.  However I think Lee Westwood is definitely the more dangerous contender.   He has been the most steady during the entire 3 rounds and has beaten Tiger in Germany previously.  I hope the last pairing and Rocco would make it absolutely exciting tomorrow.

NBC should be paying Tiger bonus money for making such an amazingly unbelievably show, just when you think he's down and out.

Yup....wala nga puyat.   I hope Tiger's knee wont be a factor tomorrow.   Tiger has been perfect in  a major when leading after 54 holes.   Lets see if he does it again.  ;D

Yup....wala nga puyat.   I hope Tiger's knee wont be a factor tomorrow.   Tiger has been perfect in  a major when leading after 54 holes.   Lets see if he does it again.  ;D

I'm pretty much worried about the knee.  Notice how he limped towards the end and even changed the drive on the 18th to a big big draw in order to compensate and reduce the stress on the knee with a normal trajectory drive.  Hope it holds up until the end.  It would be a pity if his game collapses tomorrow due to knee buckling.   But as good as he is, he can probably adjust by striking it with less torque, avoiding hard shots until he's sure the knee would hold the entire 18 holes.

The saddest scene of the day was Phil Mickelson's on the 13th hole.  Unbelievable collapse at such short distance.

Amazing how much the difficulty level was increased on the same course in 5 months between the Buick Invitational and the US Open.

Good job by USGA on setting up Torrey Pines for the US Open.  If you noticed, the scores arent consistently Pars.   The par 5s are birdie busters.   But there are holes that will penalize a player if mistakes are made.   Just look at Tiger's scorecard.

Im pretty excited about the par 5 finish.   The 72nd hole will be a factor in a tight leaderboard.

Regarding Mickelson, its really quite questionable why he settled to leave the driver out of his bag in the first 2 rounds.    His aim was to ensure more fairways hit.   But the strategy bit him coz his 3 wood also wasnt helping.   At least with the driver, even if you micrap with it...it will be 20-30 yards closer.

Tiger was superb! But lady-luck (especially the one hop birdie) pitched in.
However, the 2 eagles in the back 9 are pure Tiger-talent.
He even had a bogey in the last 6 holes if I am not mistaken. If he got a par there he'd be up by 2.

About the knee, Tiger is a competitor on the level of MJ. He won't back down especially on the last 18 holes. Just like how MJ willed the Bulles with a flu. He's gonna gut it out for 18 holes.

I wonder how Westwood will handle it. Tiger is so dangerous when leading or tied on the last day. Definitely a must watch tomorrow :) I'll pass on the Lakers-Cs and watch this :)

Star Sports is bumbling its coverage big time.    Tight finish pa naman.

Questionable decisions by Tiger in 13 and 14.    Very Un-Tiger like. Instead of birdie-birdie...went bogey-par.     Dang...the sporting gods arent friendly with me big time.

Tiger and Westwood needing birdies on 18th to tie.    Eagle to win.

Rocco, clubhouse leader with a 1 shot lead.

Would have been even better if Lee made a birdie at the 18th.  The whole of Europe is behind this lad.  Would have been World War III tomorrow instead of civil war.

Whatever happens tomorrow (I don't care who wins between the two as I really like both), Tiger should be given a special award for the most dramatic athlete of all time.   Just when you think the show is over, ang BANGIS sa pressure!  Unbelievable!

I think tee-off is at 3pm ET so 4am sa Tokyo.  No problem.  He he he.

Yeah, watching tournament golf live can be as exciting as basketball.

In the 90s and early this decade, I would watch Frankie Minoza every week in the Japanese Tour and would diligently compute his total earnings.  He was the highest earning Filipino athlete during his prime.    Those bastard Japanese reporters would always ask the same question whenever he won.  "What would you do with your prize money???  What would you do with your prize car".  I heard, he usually "gave" those big cars to some honchos at the Phil Embassy because he couldn't bring them home anyway.  Or probably that was his tax.

Win or lose, Tiger still proved once and for all that he's from another planet.  Man, he's been making magical shots after magical shots.

That pitch dunk shot from the bunker on 17th and that long putt on the 18th and the 13th hole can't be made by man for God's sake -- on a US Open!! Man.

Tiger or Rocco?  I think Rocco's got a chance if both of Tiger's knees are hurting. Or cut off his right arm.

Agree!
either of them wins tomorrow will make headlines. Rocco will be the oldest man to win a major at 45yo, and will by beating Tiger because this appears to be a one-on-one.

similarly, Tiger will make headlines because of his knees and his come-from-ahead win!

Did anyone see Lee Westwood's reaction after making par on the 17th?
His tounge out and holding his hands over his heart and acting like almost faiting.
That was really funny!

Tiger Woods all the way!!!!! I feel bad for Mediate though.

Tomorrow's play-off is almost like a match-play.  As long as Rocco doesn't make any big number on any particular hole, he has a fair chance of beating Tiger over 18 holes.  Don't forget, Tiger made 3 double bogeys on the 1st hole during the past 4 days.

Good morning golf buddies!   Told you it's gonna be a match play.

Rocco and Tiger should just share the trophy this year!   Playing Tiger on the 18th is like playing tennis against a wall ;D

If Rocco has to win in extra hole, he has to beat Tiger before the 18th.

greatest ever win by tiger? hope he hasn't shortened his career by playing with that injured knee.

great showing by rocky/ rocco too. he also deserved to win, but as ol' bill munny said, "deserve's got nothin' to do with it."

hey, this turned out to be a good schedule for me. found good use for my old vhs machine. watched it "live" when i woke up, took only 2 hours by zipping through the ads and fairway walks. none of my hi-def machines could help me today, lol.
Title: Re: US Open 2008
Post by: mattia on Jun 17, 2008 at 09:49 AM
So what did I tell ya?  In crucial matches and you're up against Tiger, you don't stand a chance.  You need to break both his knees and take away one arm for you to at least make it an even match.  It's like playing against Michael Jordan in the last minutes of the game and you're just up by 1 point.  You know what will happen.

Great players make great shots -- in crucial moments.  Eagle - Birdie on the 17&18 of the 2nd round for the lead.  Birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff.  Another birdie on the 18th hole for sudden death.  It's God playing, disguised as Tiger Woods.

One of the best in terms of drama, but definitely not in performance.   He was up and down all week, even sa play-off.   But experts are right, the way Torrey Pines is set-up for US Open, there wont be consistent pars, but more of bogeys mixed with birdies.  Thats the way Tiger played all week.

Regarding the knee, I guess we are left to speculate the real status of that injury.   In my mind, it will be fine.   But I think he may have to rest for a month now, and avoid the regular PGA sked within that period.   Hope he will be back come British Open.

Based on consistency of performance during 4 days of regulation play, that honor should go to Lee Westwood.  He was just one birdie short of joining the play-off with no big numbers on any hole.

I don't care about putting stats but Tiger is the best putter from any range when he needs to make one.

Based on what transpired during the play-offs, it was definitely not that Rocco didn't stand a chance.  In as much as Tiger made the crucial birdie to force sudden death play-off, Rocco missed his own birdie opportunity within 20 ft.   Rocco was just one hair short of the trophy.  One day, someone will be lucky enough to sink that putt.

I guess the best we could hope, is for Tiger to be able to play in the Open Championship next month.   But he doesn't need to force the issue because he has already won a major this year.  Better make sure the knee is fully healed or he risks cutting his career short, jeopardizing his quest to break Jack's record.  It would be sad though if he misses the Open.  Watching them pros play golf in courses designed by sheeps under blustery conditions is a totally refreshing spectacle.  And I really like those bump and run shots from wedge distances.

Tiger should consult Paul Pierce.  He miraculously recovered from that "serious" knee injury he "sustained" in game 1 of the finals.  For sure, Tiger can still play the Britich Open and the PGA Championships.   ;D   ;D   ;D
