Title: CHALLENGE! The rare local R3 DVD edition...
Post by: Dan on Aug 01, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Here are the rules:

Post any locally bought (meaning Philippines only) R3 DVD you have in your personal inventory/collection that isn't being sold in stores anymore or is not widely available.

Succeeding posters can challenge the veracity of your claims by naming any shops or sources that still sell the R3 DVD(s) you posted, directly challenging you on where you acquired said R3 DVD, etc.  ;D

Or people can just show off by saying if they also have that particular R3 DVD(s) in their personal collection as well.  ;)

I saw these DVDs while I was arranging my stuff last night. Does anyone have...

The Fifth Element (2-Disc Ultimate Edition Superbit)
Kung Fu Hustle (2-Disc DTS)

If you are going to raise a challenge atleast request also the "UPC" of the so called "rare" title.

That does not apply, xage, since until maybe 3 years ago, a vast majority of the Viva (Fox, Disney) and Magnavision releases DID NOT have a UPC. Just quickly glancing through a few in my collection, The Last Picture Show, Anatomy & Anatomy 2 (Magna: Columbia) have blank boxes with weird letters where the bar code-UPC should be; Xanadu (Magna: Universal) has a bar code but where the UPC numbers go has "DXANADU" written instead of the 11-digit code; Signs, Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 (Viva: Touchstone-Disney) have nothing - no bar code, no box, no UPC numbers.

The only company that has been religious with their UPCs for Philippine R3 releases is Warner.

I also have the R3 Kung-Fu Hustle 2-disc DTS. If I remember correctly, the initial price for this is P895. My Fifth Element UE is R1 though.

I think I saw a rare local R3 just yesterday in Astro Megamall. It is a 2-disc deluxe edition of CJ7 with a transparent plastic slipcase. I personally have not seen this anywhere else.

Saw the CJ7 transparent slipcase in Astro MOA. Didn't really like the movie so I didn't get it  ;)

I'll post pics of the said titles when I check my inventory tonight.

One of my entries for the challenge:

David Lynch's Dune locally disctirbuted by Viva.

I have that. I wish I didn't, though. One of the worst DVDs available on the local market.

Here's my rare R3:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon initial release. Contains an English DD 5.1 audio track with Asian-accent English - different from the American-accent English dub of the US R1. Contains a 4-page insert. The weird code in the empty UPC/bar-code box is 05990MNWS. Here's the board discussion (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=734.0) on how rare this title was... even back in 2001.

I also have the initial release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But i just bought it second hand from sir Hemisphere  ;D

Bought Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 as Christmas gifts for my sister's children
Also have:
The Fifth Element (2-Disc Ultimate Edition Superbit) - great PQ! from Tower Records Glorietta about three years ago. I think it was the last one they had during that time.
Moulin Rouge 2-disc SE - bought this early last year (or two years ago? can't remember...) at Tower Records Shang (now closed) for P299

howzabout the batman begins snapcase?

You know, that will be really really rare, since Batman Begins was first released on DVD in 2005, and Warner Philippines stopped releasing new films in snappers back in 2003.  ;D

And are we really counting Warner snappers as "rare"? If so, give me time, I probably have at least 50-100 titles I can post here. Starting with "A", I have Altered States, Analyze This, Analyze That; "B": Big Wednesday, Body Heat, The Bourne Identity (miniseries), Butterfield 8; "C": Caddyshack, Caddyshack II, Calamity Jane, Cats & Dogs, The Champ, Clash of the Titans, Coma, Copycat...

Hey, that's right! Good memory, man: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=26115.0

Reading through the thread, there was a 2-disc R3, but it seems that's a lot more rare than the R1.

i was following the thinking in the original post kasi that said, r3 titles bought locally but no longer available, and i thought the ones i had counted, and it just so happens they were snap cases too so i though i should bring that up.  oiii ba ule? ;D
Title: Re: CHALLENGE! The rare local R3 DVD edition...
Post by: Dan on Aug 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Ok, new rule!

In the interest of fairness and as far as Warner releases are concerned, the snapper case will not be a factor based on the massive amount of this produced locally over the years. It's not as uncommon as a digipak or other special type of packaging, so... You may mention it if you like.
Title: Re: CHALLENGE! The rare local R3 DVD edition...
Post by: devlin_waugh on Aug 05, 2008 at 06:15 PM
well in that case the DVD's rareness should really depend on the title and not the case in which it came in, so I guess my Power of One R3 still counts as a challenge...
Title: Re: CHALLENGE! The rare local R3 DVD edition...
Post by: juanch on Aug 05, 2008 at 06:57 PM

Title: Re: CHALLENGE! The rare local R3 DVD edition...
Post by: Dan on Aug 05, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Yeah, like with Mr. Hankey's snapper case copy of Clash of the Titans, I also have this but in a regular amaray case. The discs themselves are no different.

so no more snappers? ok

As long as it's a title that's rare, it's alright. You can mention if it's a snapper or not but only if it's relevant (e.g. different supplemental materials, encoding, etc.)

There's also the one about the CJ7 with plastic slipcase. That counts as rare even if the disc inside is the same.

You can also specify if the disc is DVD5, 9, or otherwise. There was a mention of UPC codes but that may only apply to special cases such as the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon initial release. But only if the UPC code is relevant to a difference in the content and package design of the entire item release.

As always, anyone can challenge anyone on their posts on any factor.

Umm...the R3 (of Once Upon a Time in America) is censored? Care to elaborate? Thanks :)

Sure, back in 2005, barrister first noted:

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA:

I've seen a 2-disc P-DVD (China) version, presumably copied from R1.  The Philippine R3 is a censored version.
Congratulations, Warner Philippines. You now have the dubious distinction of being the distributor that released the first and only censored DVD in the Philippine market.

At the R3 hearse scene (chap. 28 at 97 mins.):

1.  There's a delibrate frame error - the picture is framed higher to hide the woman's pubic region.
2.  The woman's boobs were censored with a Gaussian Blur filter.

firewired then made an inquiry to Warner:

Okay, according to Warner, DVD censorship is never done for the benefit of the Philippines since we're quite liberal locally compared to our neighbors. Case in point is Eyes Wide Shut where we got the uncut version which showed T&A. In comparison, Region 1 was digitally manipulated cover the nudity.

With Once Upon A Time in America, all the major territories (including Singapore and Korea) may have objected to the total nudity of the corpse which showed the pubic area in a medium shot. In any case, if only 1 master was produced, then it's likely that all Asian versions  were censored. They're still waiting for a more concrete assessment from their Singaporean headquarters.

Yeah, I have JFK snapper 2-disc.  2nd disc is on a sleeve.

I saw a brand new My Fellow Americans R3 being sold on ebay.com.ph.  I guess for P199 only.  I hesitated to buy because of bad DVD reviews -- POOR PQ and SQ!  vcd quality even for the legit release.  Good movie.  Bad DVD...

Star Wars Episode II 2-Disc

Those local R3's I have that weren't super rare before but (almost) never seen these days...

Saving Private Ryan 60th Anniv Commemorative Ed 2-Disc
Fantastic Four Extended Edition
A Knight's Tale Special Edition

Whew, these are the only ones i can recall for now...
Kung Fu Hustle 2-Disc editions are all over the Magna-mazing sale displays!

These, I have.

The Saving Private Ryan commemorative DVD is included in my World War II set. The case is labeled "Region 2" but the discs themselves are labeled R3.

A Knight's Tale Special Edition I saw a couple of copies of at the Astro MOA and Odyssey Greenbelt sales.

And the Kung Fu Hustle 2-disc DVDs at the sale are different from what I have, if I recall. Is the Cantonese DTS track listed in the specs on the back cover? I'll make a scan and post the pic later.

By the way, my copy of Star Wars Episode II (2-Disc) is up for sale  ;D to anyone that's interested, of course  ;)

Yes, I have this. I think it's quite rare, though. I don't recall seeing this around.

Anyone have "Big" R3? I'm not sure I've seen this recently. I'm actually getting rid of my copy since I bought the R1 Extended Cut already.

You know, I've never seen that on R3. Is it really an R3? I remember Astro Mega had a few R1's for sale several years ago...

If so... I think you just may be a winner here!  ;D

I was thinking of buying it online through amazon, and to my surprise, i saw it at astro southmall, las pinas for only 199pesos last february.  Since that sighting, i never saw another copy ever again. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

Got this as well. And there's still some of it on the store shelves.

Here's my copy of Kung Fu Hustle with the Cantonese DTS track indicated on the back. I've seen 2-disc copies of this on the recent sales but their DVD case doesn't indicate if there is DTS. Maybe the discs are the same but I'm not shelling out money again just to see.

One that's rare that I don't have is XXX: Unrated Director's Cut:

I remember seeing this (around the time the crappy sequel was released) and thinking, "I'll wait for it to go on sale," but I never saw it again at any sale.

Anyone have it?

Sulit ba yung pagka-unrated (i.e. - significantly more sex and violence) o harang lang?  ;D

This is my only XXX copy and I've never seen the original version.  Based on the review for this dvd, it just re-inserted all the deleted scenes found on the previous release, which is a total of 8 minutes.  Nothing really material for the movie.  As dvd verdict said, "a new breed of secret agent, a new low in double dips".  So there.  If you own the original widescreen version, then no need for a double dip.  Unless you can't get enough of Vin and Samuel!

Mr Hankey, I guess you're better off with xxx.com ni Juliana Palermo ::)
