Title: Best DVD Writer/Rom
Post by: unknownymous on Jan 15, 2009 at 03:29 AM
Magandang Araw mga kakosa!  ;D

Been using LG DVD writer for more than a year now.  No prob so far after burning around 200+ DVDs & CDs.

Both DVD writers of my main desktops are made by NEC.  One has been a workhorse since 2005 pa and still working well.  But I just discovered during the holidays it has issues with Memorex brand disk.   The other brands sold by CD-R king are OK naman.

Anybody using External DVD writer? Im planning to get one for my Atom based mini-ITX PC.

I've converted the DVD writers replaced by Liteon to an external writer, they've so far given good performances, well, maybe because they're replacements(brand new) for the faulty unit I bought that didn't last a year

I've bought 2 external DVD writers before costing around 5K(think it was 2 years ago) but they fared badly,(can read/decrypt, but has almost 90% burn fail)and my take is that this writers get their power supply via the usb, which seemingly is inadequate when burning Iso files, in fact some of the successful burns were faulty as they end with corrupt files, even if Nero/DVD decrypter certified that they were successful burns, thus, my reason for sticking it out with the 3.5 converted to 5.2 enclosured external DVD writers.

Nowadays, there are new beautifully crafted DVD writers made by Samsung and LG, although they still get their power from the usb, according to the leaflet I've read, it was designed for Atom based PCs and Netbooks.(probably can withstand the limited power since it has no internal opyical drive and the processor is energy efficient, unlike the older laptops that I used), however, I have not tried any of these.(costs around 4.5K)

My brother-in-law gave me his spare Samsung internal DVD writer. I found an external DVD writer casing in SM Megamall cyberzone for 1.1K. It had an external power supply, and connects the DVD writer via USB to my laptop. I haven't tried to burn any disc yet, though. As fas as reading discs, di pa naman nagkakaproblema...

Pre kamusta? Sayang you missed our reunion last December.  :)

I've tried all other brands but nothing beats the performance of Pioneer dvd writers. Sadly, can't find one nowadays.  :'(

Maganda LG, good overall performance with DVD and DL pero wala masyadong firmware updates. Kung burning lang gusto niyo and wala masyadong ibang features this'll fit the bill nicely. As for CD burning depende sa model na bibilhin, pero usually 16x lang yung speed na matino yung quality ng discs. LG ko 2.5+ years and over 350 discs burned.

Samsung is good with DVD and DL too except their 22x burners make burns that are worse than their 20x models. Samsung 20x ko nasira within a year (spindle motor problem) and napapalitan agad - mga 1 year na now and 250+ discs burned.

Pioneer is really good with DVD and DL discs, problema hindi lang makahanap masyado dito sa Pinas and wag kayo bibili nung 116/216 series - sayang lang sa pera yung series na yun. CDs maganda din, pero as mentioned before at least doble siya sa price (3k-4k brand new) dahil hindi siya normally binebenta dito. Yung Pioneer kong 4x writer 3 years and 500+ discs burned. Recommended if you have the money.

LiteOn... eh. DVD decent, don't waste your time with DL discs with newer LiteOn units. 6months LiteOn ko and I only use it for really bad DVD discs (mga no-name and CDR-King brand) at hindi ako masaya sa quality. Primary use right now is for scanning and ripping discs kasi ito pinakamabilis at those tasks. 100+ discs burned. Don't even attempt to burn CDs with this, kung need magburn ng CDs 16x lang para mabasa.

Sony/Optiarc is my best DL DVD burner, kapareho ito ng chipset (NEC) with the Pioneer pero sobrang mura (OEM). Good CD burner at mid-speeds. 4months used and over 200+ discs burned. One of my favorite drives, super cheap.

Dati maganda mga ASUS nung ginagamit nila Pioneer units to rebadge, pero now I can't recommend it since LiteOn na din siya. Performs the same as the LiteOn (kasi LiteOn nga siya!) so not recommended.

The best talaga yung BenQ na 16x - I still have 3 DW1640 (purchased 2004-2005) and an external Sony rebadged EW164B (2005) na mas maganda pa burns sa iba kong bagong drives now (kung gagamit ka ng magandang discs - like Verbatim). :( I use my BenQs now and then for high-quality DVD/DL/CD burns and scans. 4-5 years nang buhay with an aggregate total discs burned of 3000+ (mga 600 per drive) since purchase.

Ginagamit ko pa din hanggang ngayon for that very same purpose. :D

So ayan, from my varied experience of DVD writers from 2001 til now that's what I've concluded. Hope this helps. :)

my 4 year old LG suddenly stopped reading/recognizing an disc (burned or blank)...

I would like sana to have an external dvd writer so I can use it with other PCs but what is the best way to "build" an external dvd writer? May nabibili ba external case for dvd writers like those used for hard discs?

Title: Re: Best DVD Writer/Rom
Post by: Alfie on Apr 30, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Yes, my 2 RMA Liteon were converted to be an extrenal DVD writer and right now since they have a dedicated power supply, they have more successful burns (than my recent LG SATA DVD Writers)with my cheaply acquired DVD+R and DVD-R.

The casing is now so cheap, the ones for IDE goes for only 450 to 650pesos.
For SATA writers I think it's higher.

You'll have to buy the 5.2" size casing, almost all PC shops including CDR King(but don't know about their quality) sells them. Installing the writer is very easy, in fact the casing always comes equipped with the specified screws and even a screwdriver.

Jojo, any chance you can check the data cable? this happened to a lite-on drive, which i thought defective for a long time, culprit pala was the ide cable  :-\

Oh ok, so it's just like what I did to my old 40gig internal hdd. My LG DVD writer is an ide pa, but the mb already accepts sata drives...

I've heard that the external dvd writers (those slim ones powered via usb) are a bit unreliable? I'd like to build an external burner because my laptop's drive is being quickly consumed due to my downloads but I don't want to burn a lot of discs with the laptop's writer so this is probably the best solution for me.

Thanks man...

Yes I can! Never thought of that...  ;D This is worth to try and won't cost me anything...

Thanks for the tip, will post the results later bro...

Thanks!

EDIT:

Too bad, I replaced the ide cable with a known good one but it still doesn't read. I even swapped the dvd writer to another pc but to no avail. Seems like the disc isn't spinning when the tray closes... hay...  ;D

yes it was indeed. and the good thing is that the LG was worth it, so many burned dvds with that one.

now I'm thinking of setting up something like what Alfie uses so the writer can be used with different pc's in the house.

thanks!

Which do you think it's better to get, a branded external drive or an internal drive + 5.25" external enclosure? The latter is cheaper though and comes with it's own power supply too.

Title: Re: Best DVD Writer/Rom
Post by: Dowals on May 01, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I actually have no experience with slim external drives, but i have used a sony writer with enclosure at the office, i actually preferred the enclosure type because it a lot cheaper before (externals used to be more than 5k), it was easier for me to ask for office approval.

Disadvantage of the enclosed one for me was it was too bulky.  go for slimmer external if you prefer a more portable one, besides the slim type is more pleasing to look at.  But I've read somewhere there were burn problems with a usb powered one, maybe they corrected this already.  at may warranty naman  :)

Let's wait for concrete feedback from someone with actual experience with slim types.

I want the drive to have it's own psu and not draw power from the laptop.

I guess i'll go ahead and try the internal drive + enclosure combo, table space is not a problem pa naman.

Post ko results, good or bad hehehe...  ;D

internal drive + 5.25" external enclosure --> mas cheap ata eto.

May plextor ako dati kaso scsi pa hehehe, mahal nga talaga sir. I also have two yamaha external cd writer but scsi din ang interface nun enclosure kaya hindi ko ma-convert para gamitin as external drive. Ganda pa naman yun all metal casing and sturdy power supply.
