I believe the 8k doesn't factor in the cost of the hard drive yet. You also need to factor in the cost of setting up a network if you don't have one yet. Portable drives are still the best bang-for-the buck.

-
guys what's the difference between WD essential and home edition?
essential = usb only
home= usb firewire esata
-
question lang po..bakit yung WD ko na 320 gig..tinignan ko sa properties nya ang nakita kong free space ay 299 gig lang?? wala pa naman pong laman ung hardisk ko na kahit ano... ???
salamat po...
-
WD TV + WD 1tb MyBook studio Ed.
-
When they say 320 gig they really mean 320,000,000,000 bytes. There's 1024 bytes per kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes per meg and 1024 meg per gig. So it will end up being about 298 gig.
So a 1tb is actually only 931 gig. Misleading nila, no? :D
-
salamat sir..gets ko na..uu nga misleading..heheh...:P
-
i just use a seagate 500gb free agent pro - kakahiya against your 1tb's hehehe
thats really cheap at that price, i think i got my free agent pro for 8k just last december >:(
-
yung NMT ko, yung internal Seagate 500GB lang, pang download lang ng movies and a lot of Children's movies and Discovery Channel videos
The bulk of my storage nasa network
Yung matatapos na download nililipat ko sa network

Question on those who bought Mybook Home Edition w/ Esata, Does the package include the Esate cable? Is it compatible w/ my Acer X3200 esata port?
-
I have a Studio II and it didn't come with an esata cable.
Esata is an industry standard so it should work. If you don't have AHCI driver (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enabled and installed (most likely if you're on XP) you'll need to do a reboot for your pc to recognize the drive. On Vista with AHCI, the system will recognize the drive after automatically similar to plugging in a usb drive.
-
Where can I buy Esata cable? Is it the same using an internal one? I need to cable measuring at least 6 ft.
I'm using Vista, so like you said I think my Acer will recognized immediately.
-
i think it should've came with your external drive, anyways, try sa mga hardware stores or pc shops just to be sure
recently, hardware stores like ace and true value have been stocking up on these computer related cables e like usb's vga's and the works ;)
hope this helps!
-

We're currently trying the WDC 2TB WD20EADS (32mb) drive with the egreat: works with 31b (125 firmware), still testing with the 32b. We usually experience problems when formatting (depends on the firmware) but it sorts itself out (usually by formatting the drive on a different model).
It's still a bit dear though.
-
Hi Gren,
Have you tested the Buffalo 1.0TB USB Drivestaton in the egreat? Any feedback or comparison with performance of WD MyBook Essential? I was told that you ran out of WD HDDs in your store.

Sa ngayon wala pa ko nakikita. Pero meron ng 1TB Laptop drive, pero thicker than those with smaller capacity. Meaning you cannot use the common USB enclosure to fit it.

Yes, meron na. Western Digital 1TB 2.5" Passport. No need power adaptor.

it will work, its just a question what format you will format it with, they say it work best formatted as ext/3, although formatting it as ntfs will work too.

As far as the Xtreamer is concerned, there is no need to format in ext3. The preference for ext3 is just for the family of devices (using Sigma chipset and running Syabas firmware) called Networked Media Tanks (HDX 1000, Popcorn Hour, etc.)
Internal/external hard drives formatted in ext3 and NTFS can be accessed read/write just fine by the Xtreamer... and there are no performance issues as far as I know.
-
ok thanks. so out of the box, most probably ano kaya ang format nya?

An Xtreamer formats an internal hard drive with the NTFS file system
An HDX 1000 formats an internal hard drive with the ext3 file system

I will never buy Seagate again. I got hit by the 7200.11 bug and had another 7200.10 fail on me. Never again! >:(
-
Is it possible to use USB-powered hard drives or is it necessary to use external hard drives with its own AC power source?

I still think Seagate provides the best after-sales RMA replacement service... Good luck with WD and others. No problems kung natago nyo resibo.

May tanong lang peeps. Alin ba ang lalabas na mas magandang PQ (upscaling) sa 32 lcd bravia (and is it discernible?) when compared - yung downloaded divx movie na 700 mb size played sa lets say philips hdmi (this player also upscales movies on flash drives right?) or playing the same movie using an nmt, say WDTV? Thanks!

that's really hard to say, depends on the chips inside the dvd player. but for an nmt/media player, wdtvs are known to exhibit pretty good pq. i own a popcorn, and those divx files looks acceptable to me even when i project it through my pj, nothing to crow about but definitely watchable.
i have not tried it, but imho, the wdtv might have an edge here. :)

I have this Seagate barracuda 7200.11 500GB hard drive (ST350032 0AS) supposed to have the good firmware already SD1A upon manufacturing is now starting to fail (primarily used for my movie storage)... I have windows 7, the bios failed to recognize this drive... but sometimes it does... and if it does after about a minute or so it would just disappear in windows after boot... I took the hard drive out and placed it a cdr-king enclosure... I works ok now (about 3 monrths now)... at first I thought it was a PSU problem since it work on the enclosure until I read it here...
I was planing to upgrde my PSU (Generic) to branded (Cooler master EX 460W) but since I read this... I need some advice on what to buy first? a HDD or PSU? The PSU is Php2k and a new WD 500GB is Php2450... my budget only permits one of these....
-
wow that's a lot.. I got 3 WD MyBook Essentials 1TB and 1 WD MyPassport Essential 320gb connected via self-powered USB HUB to my PCH A110..

1tb + 2tb WD Mybook Essential
-
1TB WD internal + 1TB Samsung Story external + 500GB Samsung S2 portable
-
Seagate 2 TB 7200RPM internal drive and 1.5TB WD Essentials for my PCH A-200.
-
WD 160GB Elements for the internal. WD 1TB Essential.
-
1x of 320Gb Internal HDD (WD BLUE I think) >> For my torrent rig
1x of 1Tb Internal HDD (WD GREEN) >> For my PCH-A110
4x of 1Tb External HDD (WD GREEN)
2x of 1.5Tb Internal HDD (WD GREEN & SG)
** I've used both WD & SG drives extensively (for my NMT use & my PC shop), would have to say that WD performs much, much better - specifically the 1Tb above models.
SG does have the better RMA service (see Tipidpc post on this) ...... however this wont be a problem at all (for both WD & SG) as long as you keep all receipts & let the store handle the RMA replacement.
-
1 x Samsung EcoGreen F2 1.5TB (3.5")
1 x WD Elements 1.5TB (3.5")
1 x WD Elements 0.5TB (2.5")
I also have networked storage, but I'm yet to use this with my NMT. There's still enough space in those 3 directly-connected drives.
-
i use a western digital mypassport elite, but its the old model. i might buy a new ext hdd - baka hitachi or elements, mura e. i've had bad experiences with seagate's ext hdd's as well. pass nko sa seagate.
-
I have a Portable 500G WD Passport, 1TB WD Internal with Astone Enclosure and 500G Seagate External. So far all of them are working fine with Seagate being the oldest which I got last 2007 in the US while the 2 WD were only bought last year.
Still contemplating on getting an internal for the xtreamer or buy another 1TB external. :)
-
Good day guys,
I'm planning to purchase my first NMT soon at the same time my first external HDD.
So I have a few questions
I'm currently eyeing the WD 1TB(seemingly the popular choice) or Astone 1TB
1) Does having eSata and firewire matter? Which NMT's support this type of connection and is it really faster?
2) Which one operates cooler?
TIA

i think you should go with wd, i had some non pdvd friends who complain of their astone hdd, which broke down for one reason or the other.
as for esata, if your pc has this connection then it can help in transferring files, and yes, its really faster than the usual usb 2.0.
as for using it on the nmt. if the nmt has an esata connection, it only helps in the transfer of files and not the actual watching (although i am not too sure about this).

^ Thanks for the always valuable input bro Aynz

Which is the most basic version and which is the most feature-rich version?
Should I opt for just the basic version?

brader anya is right, the most basic is wd elements. no frills, usb 2.0 hdd. its foot print is ala cd writer; horizontal. while the my book series has a lot of sub models depending on the connection its has. the most basic of which is the my book essential with only usb connection, im not sure what they call the high end my books (studio ata), this is the one with firewire and esata.
since the price difference of mybook essential and elements is just a couple of hundreds only. i would suggest you get the mybook, since its vertical orientation (ala pocketbook) looks better and saves space. but any of them you cant go wrong. i have both.

4 x 1.5TB Thecus (mga latak na 720p, at new finds, plus SD movies)
4 x 2TB inside Mediasonic 4-bay (movies, movie series)
4 x 2TB inside Mediasonic 4-bay (animation, TV series, BDMV ISO)
2 aluminum storage x 5 disks x 1.5TB offline, kabit sa dual dock pag may special requests.
1 aluminum storage x 5 disks x 2TB offline, ready for disk cloning (kasama si CASTRO disk)
all except 2 units are 2TB SAMSUNG F4 (fastest to cool amongst all 2TB disks after 7 hours of disk cloning).
nakakapagod ding magayos ng disk contents ha.
anyways, to minimize the clutter, i am moving to 3TB,
letting go off 1.5TB then 2.0TB, PM lang if you want and will dispose bahala na kayong magformat, I just need 8 hours to HD clone 2TB to my 3TB.
for now, pag kelangan i access, i use USB 2.0 dual dock (which has ESATA and USB 2.0), see pix below:

brader HD_movies, mas mahirap magdelete kasi, hanapin mo sa mga copy mo ang pinakamagandang i retain, eh ayun, 6 na Matrix trilogy ako di ko alam pa kung alin delete ko. hay..)
-
^ Wow ..... 6 different sets (encodes) of the Matrix trilogy.
If the encoder name is available, this would be a good criteria to use which copy to retain ..... some encoders' works really are a few notches above the rest.
Of course, the other usual suspects would be bitrate, resolution, file size, audio stream, etc ..... :)

was also told to keep True-HD, DTS-MA, DTS over AAC/AC3 for audio, keep 1080p over 720p, keep BRD over HDTV/DVDRip but if all things equal sa file names, i keep the bigger one(in hopes mas maganda ang bitrate nya)

It sucks that street prices (in Tokyo) of WD HDDs have increased by $5-$10 due to the flooding problems in Thailand.
Any other HDD brand affected these days?
On topic, I like the convenience of powered 10-port USB2.0 hubs on NMTs; added ease that my USB hubs magnetically attach to AVRs and metallic devices or posts.

I am about to buy a new HD for my NMT and it will be at least 1.5TB.
Question: When I format it, is it adviseable to just have one partition.... or is it better if I create more than one partition?
TIA...

depends on your NMT, PCH has preferred disk layout but rest are fine with just partition if you like browsing in one place.
if you partition 2 two or more, you have to select which partition everytime, (which is ok if you want to categorize your movies as --> ADULTS -- ANIMATION etc), the downside is the partitions are fixed so best 1 patition, and categorize by folder. mas maganda to navigate your list aphabetically (you may need to rename those files with "the" to be "lord of the rings, the" for the same search purpose

It will be used on Egreat R1-ii ;) So simple (i.e., just one partition) is better pala.
Thanks for the always helpful reply, sir toys4geeks. :)

Anybody noticed that internal HDDs in NMTs sometimes aren't read by the NMTs? I installed an internal Hitachi 2.5" on my 1st gen Xtreamer and was using it for less than a month. Now it cannot be read. Took it out and tried it on my HDD dock and it cannot be identified by my PC anymore. I also installed a Seagate 3.5" HDD on my Kaiboer 1055 and the reading of the HDD is inconsistent. Downside is when I play movies, they stop in the middle of it then goes back to the main screen and just hangs. Never had these problems on external HDDs.

brader, sorry to hear, pains to lose data.
i dont use >5400 RPM disks for internal as disks tend to be hot and the heat isnt good for both the disk and the NMT.
so airflow (if unit has fans that suck the hot air out from disk) and passive cooling (thicker aluminum chassis is better), works best with circulated air while others put 3.5" fan to force air into the player's surface. dual docks likewise can benefit from the same fan.
Still, even with 5400 RPM gets problems in the 1st 2 months would likely have the disk replaced(lemons or not get that replaced).
I personally keep a backup and toss preloaded list of movies in a spare 1TB or 2TB sa player so that when disks konk out may puede pa balikan.

Thanks for the inputs brader Jim. I will just go back to my previous practice of using external drives for my NMTs. :-\

oo yung external enclosures nowadays are also ok (USB 3.0 and eSATA), kasi may mga "suckout fans" na inside the enclosure. the pro of 3.5" internal disks is its mura per TB with its external counterparts and bigger capacity is available, cons are its big, its hot.
I like 3.5" desktop disks when copying files into it, since its SATA to SATA(8 x faster than USB 2.0), some egreat buyers ask me to transfer their contents from 1TB to their new 2TB free of charge, kasi 3 hours lang tapos na cloning. :)
But all things equal, i love 2.5" externals kasi malinis and less wires to maintain being usb powered.
-
sorry, dunno kung OT to, pero meron ba sa inyo nag install ng NMT apps sa PCH using their USB thumb drive? kasi ayko gawing ext3 ung internal drive sa pch...anyway, na notice ko prang ambagal mag browse...correction..(mas mabagal pala than the usual) ;D at ung playback medyo jittery...pero i doubt that it has something to do with the playback...

Wow bilis ng transfer rates. I have usb 3.0 in my e350 htpc but the problem is that hindi stable ang connection ng usb 3.0 sa mobo or do I need to still update the driver. During the few times that my WD external usb 3.0 is identified by my mobo, whenever i transfer large files, the connection gets cutoff. Minsan naman the drive isn't Identified.

WD drives nearly $20 higher na in Tokyo street shops and with today's announcement of extended business suspension in Thailand, prices can only get higher in the near future. It seems Seagate would be affected even worse.
So you'd better buy your HDD now habang meron pang mga old stock sa PC shops sa Manila...or tipid sa usage ng HDD muna.

http://www.wdc.com/en/company/pressroom/releases.aspx?release=b5940d11-d8c2-49ed-9193-d1efb4bea2ed
IRVINE, Calif.-Oct. 17, 2011-Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) today announced that it has extended the suspension of its operations in Thailand. Over the weekend, rising water penetrated the Bang Pa-in Industrial Park flood defenses, inundating the company's manufacturing facilities there and submerging some equipment. At the other company manufacturing location in Thailand, Navanakorn Industrial Park, the park flood defenses were breached on Monday morning local time and water has begun to flow into the park threatening the company's facilities there. All WD employees in Thailand remain safe.
The company's other facilities in Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S. are fully operational. The company now expects that the flooding of its Thailand facilities, combined with flood damage to the company's supply chain in Thailand, will have significant impact on the company's overall operations and its ability to meet customer demand for its products in the December quarter. The company will provide further updates on the situation on its investment community conference call on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

Your kids' school break is just tooooooooooo far away not to buy additional HDDs.
Today's my wedding anniversary and all I want as present is a new HDD. Hahaha. But prudence took the better part of me hence I've been deleting dupes the past week or so - and in the process freed a good amount of HDD space. My latest 2TB HDD has got to be the most prolific in terms of downloads - and transfers..hehehe

Tokyo prices of 2TB internals now at 2.4x the level 3 weeks ago. 240% - WTF????
Cheaper to buy old stocks of external, self powered HDDs.

Yup, even here it went up by around 20% ..... and this is for the older SATA-2 HDD's at the known cheaper PC shops.
The Thailand floods really messed-up with the HDD supply chain (and Thai lives of course). Hope everything normalizes soon.

Wow Alan, this is the first time I've heard you deleting files just to free up space. All because of the floods in Thailand.
BTW, what is so special about your latest 2TB HDD that it is the most prolific in downloads and transfers?
Thanks.

No James. Because I must buy the wife a really nice bag as present, kaya I cant buy anything for myself muna.
Cleaning up the HDDs won't help me that much actually (huhuhu) but I'm liking the result - got rid of old duplicate encodes kaya very tidy.

Guys, I currently have a Probox 4-bay attached to my media player.
It currently houses 3pcs of 4TB HDD and 1pc of 3TB HDD. All are Green WDs.
1. Would I encounter compatibility issues if I replace the Green 3TB with a Red or Purple 4TB?
2. Would you guys recommend Red or Purple?
3. Best type of HDD for home theater application?

mukhang phased out na WD green...ano bang magandang alternative? WD blue madali masira.

WD Green wasn't really phased out. WD just merged both the green and blue into just the blue drives in a re-branding exercise. If you want drives with 5400rpm look for the letter Z in the part number.

Other than the 5400 rpm may iba pa ba sa blue na speed?
