Title: HT Furniture
Post by: barrister on Mar 09, 2009 at 09:36 PM
I upgraded my TV stand and sofa.

Mas maganda kung may isang thread for HT furniture such as chairs, sofas, recliners, TV stands, equipment racks, speaker stands, speaker wall mounts, etc., para mas convenient.

My new TV stand is custom-made wood, pinagawa sa suking anluwagi, naka-install na.

Yung new sofa ko ay 3-seater recliner (imitation lang na La-Z-Boy), pero end of the month pa ang delivery.

TV stand:

(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4951/img0534u.th.jpg) (http://img7.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0534u.jpg)(http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9021/img0544m.th.jpg) (http://img9.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0544m.jpg)

Materials - Ordinary wood lang, tanguili from regular lumber shop.

Construction - No nails.  Just glue, screws, and mortise & tenon joints:

Very time-consuming but avoids putty marks and split wood.

To avoid nail marks on top, the table top is attached from underneath with pocket screws; no glue, for expansion/contraction allowance.

Finish - Oil wood stain coloring, shellac, sanding sealer, polyurethane varnish, then top coat with ordinary flat varnish.

===================================

Sir, join ako dito sa thread mo ... i had my AV rack upgraded a few months ago ... it was also custom-made following Bello design and specs ... the only difference with the Bello design is that mine used a wooden top, the Bello design used a black tampered glass on top ... here's the picture -

and here's the design and model that was made as reference -

the price was PhP 12k ... my reason for choosing this design is that i wanted a wider AV rack that can accommodate three AV components on one shelf and the center speaker on the other shelf, plus some additional room for future AV component or other stuff (display items)

Ayos, a!  Ganyan ang dimensions na kailangan ko.

For me, the stand must be wider than the TV kung flat panel.  If the rack is narrower than the TV or just as wide as the TV, it does not look good.

(... Gagawin ko lang sigurong antique ang finish ... )

hirap nga sir maghanap ng wide rack sa mga ready made furniture, yung mga nakikita ko na available sobrang mahal na (more than 20k) ... kaya naisipan ko na lang magpa-custom-made ... buti na lang at magaling yung furnture shop na malapit sa amin ... btw, that's a 42pv8 on the picture, kahit 50-inch pwede pa rin yung AV rack

yeah ready mades are darn expensive, i asked a nearby aluminum/glass shop here and was informed that 3/4 thick glass is really not that expensive.

I tried those store bought A/V racks myself but somehow has compromises - kulang sa width or kulang sa haba, mataas or mababa, etc. If you add considerations like wiring, air circulation and future expansion, more often than not talagang kukulangin. Unless you really go for those expensive racks out there and have money to burn, then a DIY route will trully get what you want at a fraction of the cost.

MY considerations for making the rack below was to make it as simple as possible - no sides so it looks like the shelves are bolted to the wall with air circulation that could pass thru both sides.  Enough width space for cabling the components and atleast the length to carry 3 components per level adequately without bumping other gears.
My last consideration was to be able to move the whole rack within a minute to do future component cabling w/o fear of the plasma toppling down - thus the plasma is not connected to the rack at all.

here's mine...  DIY ;D  Sabre inspired TV rack (well, i did have a guy make the metal frame and lcd mounting spine, and another guy add the wooden base boards and finish with epoxy and latex paint)

Also my DIY foam and leatherette-bound Zen style bed with orthopedic Uratex foam mattress ;D

I'll try to come up with an internet-friendly diagram of these two ...

Nice and very functional rack design Raptor.  Judging from the picture, hanggang 65V kasya yan.  Just test the weight capacity by sleeping on the rack for a night - both of us are about as heavy as the 65V   ;D    But the first thing that came to my mind was dual 42 inch side by side.

Make sure it's tempered glass.  All of them can provide tempered glass, usually on order basis.  Konti lang yata ang price difference.

Regular glass is very dangerous.

Actually I purchased this ready-made from A/V store, but shelves space not enoughed to accomodate my gears.

So DIY wood shelves solved my problem.

Sorry sir, matagal pa ang delivery nito, end of the month pa siguro (see my first post above).

Komportable talaga kasi. :P

May nakita akong generic, dark brown leather 3-seater recliner, P60K lang.  Maganda naman.  Comfort is exactly like the orig.  The look naman, pareho lang ng orig.  At yung orig, pag leather, ay more than P100K yata ang presyo (sobra naman yon... ano, mas mahal pa sa plasma TV?  :P)

====================================

As for the orig La-Z-Boy in the States, it seems that the quality of the new ones are not as good as those made around 5 or more years ago.

Sample comment:

We have owned a La-z-boy recliner since 2001, and have been fairly happy with it, so in 2005 we bought a La-z-boy sofa and chair and a half. Within about 6 months, the side of the sofa that we sit on the most started sagging, The back cushion is now significantly lower than the other side of the sofa. The worst part is that the leather is actually wearing off! It is awful. It looks like that part of the sofa has been abused or soemthing, but it most definitely has not! I complained to teh store where we purchased it one year and two months after we bought it. The manager told me that the sofa was definitley defective. However, after 6 months of being put off, he finally told me that La-Z-Boy would not do anything about it, because the leather finish only has a 1 year warranty! I know it is not my family’s fault, as we have a leather La-Z-Boy recliner sitting within 4 feet of the sofa, and the same people sit in it, except it is the seat that someone is always sitting in! We have another sofa and loveseat (cloth) purchased in 2001 that is in pristine condition. And, in my rec room, I have a 21 year old sofa in excellent condition! It is La-Z-Boy’s fault, and tey do not care as they would not even answer us for 6 months! I will NEVER EVER purchase another La_Z-Boy product!!!

Same with all of you, I also want a customized rack for my gears dahil nga medyo pricey at mostly kulang sa sukat mga ready made furnitures sa stores.

Sir, if i may suggest, siguro okay kung i-rename title ng thread to "Custom-made HT furniture" ;D just a suggestion sir ;D ;D

Same with all of you, I also want a customized rack for my gears dahil nga medyo pricey at mostly kulang sa sukat mga ready made furnitures sa stores. Thanks.

My first TV rack was a custom-made narra.

Very light, so it's easy to move para abutin ang wiring sa likod.

Sir, if i may suggest, siguro okay kung i-rename title ng thread to "Custom-made HT furniture" ;D just a suggestion sir ;D ;D

Good suggestion.

Kailangan din natin ng heads-up kung may nakakaalam ng cheap but good quality ready-made stuff.

Maganda ang mga Sabre.  Nakabili na ako ng speaker stands nila.  Low price, good quality.  Cross-posting for Sabre: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=77367.0

I think this is tempered glass na tinted.  Cleaning tip: spray water on a clean flannel rag (yung pang-kotse) and wipe.  That's the best and cheapest way to remove smudges and fingerprints.  Don't use chemical sprays.  Residue buildup will be visible as a rainbow effect when light shines on the surface.

Maganda ang mga Sabre.  Nakabili na ako ng speaker stands nila.  Low price, good quality.  Cross-posting for Sabre: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=77367.0

I think this is tempered glass na tinted.  Cleaning tip: spray water on a clean flannel rag (yung pang-kotse) and wipe.  That's the best and cheapest way to remove smudges and fingerprints.  Don't use chemical sprays.  Residue buildup will be visible as a rainbow effect when light shines on the surface.

sobrang ganda nyan sabre mystral B (limited edition)

Good suggestion.

Kailangan din natin ng heads-up kung may nakakaalam ng cheap but good quality ready-made stuff.

Noted sir ;D thanks.

the replacement  (http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/ninja_babez/?action=view&current=2009-0017.jpg) was good naman.  i just painted it black, so camouflage effect sa fake wall.  :D
as soon as i get enough funds in reselling tvs, ill prolly DIY a rack (same as mystral B or bigger).  then prolly get a 32" plasma for my room using the old rack (http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/ninja_babez/?action=view&current=2009-0017.jpg).  :D

Yes, all 3 sections recline.

It was reportedly stuck at customs last week.

If locally available hope you don't mind sending me the price and the stores name via PM.

Post ko na lang dito for convenience.

Price is P60k; store's name is VICTORIA MONDIALE, Ortigas Home Depot, 2nd Floor, Unit 211, No. 1 Julia Vargas Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

ah yan siguro yung galing sa victoria mondiale? gusto ko din bumili nyan or yung may armrest in between seats

It's really hard to tell, maganda kasi ang upholstery, it even smells like leather...  :o.  But after thorough inspection, I think the material is synthetic.

It could be a fabric base with a top layer of PU (polyurethane) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride).  Depending on the quality, synthetics can be even better than genuine leather.  Low-quality natural leather can stiffen, crack and fade faster than high-quality synthetics.

Yung 3 seater leather with individual arm rest and cup holder mga 40K+ but not more than 50K depende sa style. Dalawang klase ang material nila, leather and microfiber. Yung 2 seater ko (reclining at 90" and individual cup holder) na microfiber 29K, not sure kung same price pa rin ngayon.

Ayos naman sa comfort yung sa Victoria.  Maybe the La-Z-Boy is a bit comfier than Victoria's, but not by much.

Maganda ang siksik na foam, parang car seats --- more body support and prevents seats from sagging.

Non-reclining is less than P50K yata.

Sir, join ako dito sa thread mo ... i had my AV rack upgraded a few months ago ... it was also custom-made following Bello design and specs ... the only difference with the Bello design is that mine used a wooden top, the Bello design used a black tampered glass on top ... here's the picture -

and here's the design and model that was made as reference -

the price was PhP 12k ... my reason for choosing this design is that i wanted a wider AV rack that can accommodate three AV components on one shelf and the center speaker on the other shelf, plus some additional room for future AV component or other stuff (display items)

question lang po mga sir, ksi balak ko rin magpagawa, would it be ok kung may gulong (reason sa para malinis yung ilalim (floorwax at polisher ko minsan) or it will lessen yung stability at strength ng rack?

Wheels/casters are OK for floors of very hard materials such as cement or ceramic tile.

For wooden floors, wheels/casters will still leave marks, so dapat yung felt nail-on glides:

Does not affect strength/stability.  For four-legged structures, wobble is eliminated.  The felt on the longer legs compress, while the felt on the shorter legs remain the same.

nice thread. let me share my DIY corner HT furniture.  finishing could have been oil stained but the radiata pine (from armourwood) is sooo bad and not furniture grade.  i also DIY'ed the center table from matwood pine and it is way better.

i used ace paint (metro brown) for the finishing instead. though it is expensive, it only requires one coat with very nice results. if you look closer, you can also see the wood grains.

the sub is at the back and i noticed really weird sounds.  (i think this has to do with corner sound waves, need to study this further)

Sir,

I would advise against using wheels ... the weight of the rack and the equipment would normally be an issue ... i used to have wheels on my previous rack - due to the weight, heat and usually stationary position, the rubber wheels melted after just a few months.

I'm now using thick 3M felt-like material that were stick-on the footings of the rack - works perfectly

I would say that it depends on the type of wheels you are using. Most of our A/V rack and computer table have wheels which are custom made and for years installed, none of the rubber wheels melted or deformed and this are all placed in a room which gets really hot at noon and in summer. Have not tried felts thou.

Nice reading the thread. Its good that sir barrister started this one. Very helpful one.

Share ko lang yung furniture shop that i frequently visiting right now since im canvassing and eyeing for modified furnitures para sa house na pinapagawa namin sa Antipolo. The name of the shop is Mandaue Foam in Cainta, its just along Ortigas Ext., left side if your heading Tikling area.

I was able to look for a pre-assembled rack that can handle a 50" plasma for only 5K+. A 3 seater recliner for only P30K+. Good quality.

If your near the place, better check. Dami din choices of design. This place seems to be a furniture haven for Antipolo, Cainta, Taytay residents. AFAIK they offer around 20% discount until May 15.

(space saving and folds into a secondary table or sofa).. lumapit ako sa isang furniture maker.. di daw nila kaya, walang mechanismo....

It's just too complicated.  Siguradong may magiging problema -- may sasayad, may masisirang part, may mawawala sa alignment, etc.

Baka maipit pa ang bata diyan ...  :P

You can determine the height depending on your preference.  Then you can use yung space below the bed for many purposes (sofa, sampayan, closet, HT cabinet, PC cabinet, tagu taguan space, little warehouse - just cover it nicely with some drapes to conceal what's inside).

Yun nga lang kelangan mataas ceiling mo, otherwise pede mo nang gawing writing board yung ceiling while lying down on bed.   :)

I just saw this thread. Maganda. I too do a lot of my HT furniture DIY (excepts seats) cuz (among other things) the ready-made ones are just too expensive. Just one comment:

I notice that some people locate the center speaker on one of the lower shelves of the equipment rack, i.e., it sits on a shelf which is below another shelf. This is not a very good set-up, for two reasons:

1. The tweeter should point at the ears of the listener. It’s often difficult to do this when the speaker is squeezed between 2 shelves.

2. The presence of a shelf both above and below the center speaker will adversely affect its sound quality. Actually, the best location is to have it free standing. Second best would be to put it on the top shelf.

Keep in mind that the most important speaker in an HT set-up is the center speaker.

i just got a 2-seater leather recliner from Mandaue Foam for +/- 19k (they have a promo of 20% off on all items for cash payment). its more compact than the one pictured and without any middle arm rest and cup holder.

3-seater leather goes for 32k less 20%. 3-seater micro fiber goes for 28k less 20%. they only have dark brown and beige for the leather recliners.

Promo is until Dec 15 kaya babalik ulit ako to get a dining set  ;D

nice thread. let me allotment my DIY bend HT furniture. finishing could accept been oil decrepit but the radiata ache (from armourwood) is sooo bad and not appliance grade. i aswell DIY'ed the centermost table from matwood ache and it is way better.

i acclimated ace acrylic (metro brown) for the finishing instead. admitting it is expensive, it alone requires one covering with actual nice results. if you attending closer, you can aswell see the copse grains.

Sir, question lang.  I used your AV cabinet as reference to the one that I'm having built now.  How do you secure the LCD on the cabinet so it doesn't fall?  I thought of screwing the stand to the table, but it'll ruin the table.  Any ideas?

I really like this thread. :) I do have a question about the TV rack, is it advisable to follow the Bello design wherein there are no drawers/cabinets integrated in it so as to free our system from clutter thus allowing more air to make our systems cool? thanks.

open shelves does give our gears more ventilation which is needed, however for "free from clutter" i would'nt say so as the wires and cables are exposed which is sometimes eye sore but there are some racks designed cable concealers.

After getting inspired from this thread i decided to design my own rack to fit my needs. Share ko lang:

Commissioned the local glass and aluminum company here, whose owner also happens to be a friend. Made of aluminum and tempered glass, took roughly 2 weeks.

Costs around 5k without labor since this was his side project.  ;D

Never thought that brown aluminum can look like wood. Now all I need is to repaint my room and wall mount the TV.

Thanks! But all the work and craftiness goes to my friend. All i did was design and visited often to make adjustments.  :)

In retrospect:
1. Should have used darker glass or a thin metal sheet for the back end, wire outlines are a bit visible at day.
2. The holes should have been a bit lower, if the equipment's thin then it's wires are also visible.
3. Could have shaved an inch or two i guess.

sorry for the very late reply, i haven't been reading this thread ... 12k was the cost of having it custom-built (all wood) ... the bello would probably cost more than 30k here, coz the smaller ones cost more than 20k ...by the way, the bello has glass top and mid-shelf

As for me I had my TV wall mounted. So center speakers would just be placed on top of any of these 2 TV racks.

that's really nice if you can request for customized size.  Had some problem finding a suitable ready-made AV cab last July because of the center speaker.  Ended up using my smaller center speaker para kumasya.

I personally dont like wall mounting.

Post by: boybastos11 on Sep 07, 2010 at 10:19 PM
after days of pondering about this, I've came up with my decision. I'm having this custom built by my friend's personal furniture carpenter.

As you can see, I edited the pic from 2 center shelves to 3. What do you guys think?

by the way thanks to those who gave their opinions. I will post the actual pic once it is finish.
Title: Re: HT Furniture
Post by: barrister on Sep 07, 2010 at 10:34 PM

If you're going to place a center speaker on the shelf below the TV, that center shelf is too small.  Looks like it's designed to fit a player, not a center speaker.

I suggest a center shelf that can fit a 21" x 9" speaker.  Even if you have a smaller center speaker now, that should give you enough allowance in case of future upgrades.

Title: Re: HT Furniture
Post by: boybastos11 on Sep 07, 2010 at 10:49 PM
I would probably put the center speaker on top for future upgrades. I had my TV wallmounted anyway. but thanks.
Title: Re: HT Furniture
Post by: Clondalkin on Sep 08, 2010 at 07:09 AM
Yes you mentioned that ipapatong mo ang center speaker sa top because of the wall mounting.  Paano if you upgrade in the future and use the supplied TV pedestal?   Problem kasi ng wall mounting, it's not easily adaptable sa installation conditions and the tendency is to install the monitor higher than comfortable level dahil ang sagwa naman ng mababang wall mount.   Sayang yung chance na papa-customize mo yung AV cabinet if you maintain such narrow and low center shelf.

I would make that at least 75cm x 25cm accessible space if I were you.  Yung magagandang class na centers would be around 60cm wide and at least 20cm tall.  Tataas pa yung AV cabinet mo effectively so mas maganda level.

Another possibility is to provide more depth on the AV cabinet top table.

Well just a thought.  Kulit no.  hehehe

OK din ang center speaker on top of the rack.  Mas maganda rin sonically, since you avoid sound reflections from inside the shelf.

With a center speaker on top, you get a more cluttered look.  Parang bodega look ang porma:

Title: Re: HT Furniture
Post by: boybastos11 on Sep 08, 2010 at 10:14 PM
pansin ko lang if I would opt to put the center speaker in a center shelf, I would need a taller AV cabinet. otherwise the center speaker would be too low near the ground. if I would put the center speaker on top, a low profile AV cabinet would be ok.

I was pondering about what you guys suggested. What I would do is I would make 2 sets of dimensions. one is with a height of 21" and the other with a height of 29" then I will have the carpenter quote both. It would all depend on my budget. hehe!

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Nice Thread. By the way for custom made stuff do you have it done by a furniture shop? or Ordinary lang na carpenter? We had a TV rack before that was done by a carpenter pero mukhang sablay sa finishing. I think it's because they dont have power tools for sanding/buffing.

may specialization po kasi yung mga carpenters, usually hiwalay po yung nagfifinish sa nagaassemble ng rack. a good seller that we have here that builds beautiful custom racks at very reasonable prices is sir oyie.

boss i'm using this very same rack ng cdr king. Solid sya. Ganda. 3 layers ng tempered glass. Pang 22" to 42" sya as per cdr king.

Konting konti na lang space on top so not ideal kasi mainit yung receiver. I have no choice but to put the receiver on the top.

Di nga ideal yung shelf height nya. Kailangan kasi nakakahinga ang AVR naten.

Makes me think of having a customized rack instead.

hi sir,

sorry, i know this thread had been inactive for quite a while, balak ko sanag bumili rin ng recliner from victoria mondiale, would just like to know kung ok pa yung recliner nyo, ok pa ba yung mechanism after 4 years of use?  and yung leather, ok pa ba?  hindi naman nag-crack?

do you really think hindi siya genuine leather?

thanks
Title: Re: HT Furniture
Post by: barrister on May 27, 2013 at 08:05 PM

Yes, ok pa ang recliner.

Ok pa rin ang mechanism.

Ok pa rin ang leather.  No cracks.  The material is slightly stretchable.  The stretch allows the material to flex and return to its original shape without cracking.

One problem I encountered - the stitching on the leg rest of the center seat came loose, maybe about 4 inches long.  I sewed a new thread on it, ayos na.

Yes, i'm sure it's not genuine leather because I saw the underside of the material.  The backside of genuine leather should be suede, which is not the case with mine.

Sabi ng clerk genuine leather daw kasi you can smell it. I googled for an explanation, may synthetics pala na nilalagyan ng chemical fragrance para mag amoy leather.

Sooo... More than three years passed, did CDR-King TV stands stay sturdy? Are they actually sturdy? Parang nakakatakot sa pics?

Any place else where I can buy TV racks/hanging stands cheap and solidly built?

I may not have the moolah to buy expensive racks and speaker stands, but have plenty of time, patience and learning skills about woodworks. Recently made some racks and stands, most of the wood used were thrown by locals except for the 1" board which I bought for 2k ( from 2pcs of dining table).
I did not use nails nor screws for the av rack.  :)

I like the LS50 stands; may I know the dimensions of the top plate?
